  • Resin 3D printers are finally available at price points that make them accessible to hobbyists and makers everywhere! But how does resin 3D printing work and how does it compare to FDM printing? In this video, we take a look at the two main resin printing methods available in consumer-level machines today: stereolithography (SLA) and masked stereolithography (MSLA).
    We also take a look at ELEGOO, Inc.'s newest 3D printer, the ELEGOO Mars, and learn how to slice and print custom models using the included ChiTuBox software! Overall, we find that the ELEGOO Mars is capable of creating high quality prints at an awesome price point -- the unit is available now, with a limited-time price of only $250!

    After watching numerous videos today it's great to see somebody do it right! . This includes a great intro to the different types of home 3D printers; I wish I'd seen this video first! I really appreciated the graphics with the explanations. And thank you for no silly 30 second - 2 minute channel introduction, and no cuts for effects and micro drama!

    Mines coming tomorrow. This is an excellent video explaining how to do the setup (which I will be following), cleaning and printing your own designs. Most TH-camrs have just rushed and only briefly mentioned setup etc focusing more on the end result and not how they got there. Again great video.

      @@SuperMakeSomething There was a difference which left me a bit baffled about (as it did not follow the pamphlet) the levelling paper sheet rather than the fep container. Makes sense as ususlly in further prints the tank will have resin in it so it can be done with the paper.

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Round Tuit This is a difference between the included manual and the official Elegoo videos. I believe both would work, however I went with the paper in order to minimize the chance of damaging the FEP film during leveling just in case. Not sure if one works better than the other - I just figured less mechanical wear on the film = longer life.

    Great review! I would recommend using Nitrile gloves over Latex because of their durability and resistance to puncturing which is important if your going to be handling uncured resin.

      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! That is a great tip!

    • @BrenzMarie
      @BrenzMarie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, absolutely! In addition, one of the reasons that nitrile (a synthetic copolymer) started to be used in making disposable gloves was the high incidence of latex sensitization and allergy that was occurring in healthcare professionals who had been using latex exam and procedure gloves for years. The nitrile exam glove industry was formed as a result and latex gloves have been all but totally phased-out in hospitals. As a consequence, the other desirable features of nitrile gloves have become recognized (ruggedness, allergy-free, impervious to most chemicals) and they've found their way into many different industries as a form of PPE (personal protective equipment). Harbor Freight has nitrile glove in boxes of 50 or 100 at reasonable prices.

    The in depth look at the slicing software (including the details on time to model, cost per model etc) was really informative and something I haven't yet seen from other videos on the printer. Thanks! (I agree with some of the other comments on the USB port though. Except for the inclusion of the music track, your video is a master class in how to make instructional TH-cam videos. I appreciate that you kept the music track level low, but seriously, for these kinds of vids, music is only appropriate at the beginning and end, and occasionally for transitions. But what I really wanted to say is that, unlike so many of the amateur hacks on TH-cam, you obviously know your stuff and are multi-talented. You apparently took the time to script out what you wanted to say. You said it clearly, succinctly, and quickly. You moved through your material in a logical manner. You had great graphics, superb editing, and the equipment and procedure vids with the voice-overs were shot skillfully. In its totality, this was a very well-done presentation. Henceforth, whenever I encounter one of those painful TH-cam videos with some mumbling, bumbling fool as the star of the show, I am going to send a link to your video with the suggestion that this is how it should be done.
    That said, my Elegoo Mars arrived earlier today so I watched your presentation before unpacking and proceeding with my first print. All turned out well, which I attribute to Elegoo's product and the training and instruction I received from you video. Thank you for your efforts.

    Very good introduction to Resin 3D printing. Now I understand the process. While I am happy with my FDM printer for buildings and terrains, printing figurines has been hit and miss. My main concern is the potential for toxic fumes. I have limited space so I need to have a method of venting those fumes. Also, I am thinking a 'cure box' with a UV light would be more practical than putting the objects outside in the sunlight, particularly in the middle of winter! I have to do some more research as I am also interested in strength and durability of resin printing as I make items that need to be strong, flexible and durable.

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I'm glad that you liked the video! Resin printing is definitely great for highly detailed prints, though there are some trade-offs in terms of clean-up, etc. compared to FDM printing like you indicate. I made another video about the Mars Pro that covers emissions and air quality, so please be sure to check that one out as well!

    Instead of masking tape, you should seal all the edges of the LCD with Kapton tape. This prevents the FEP from sticking and in case you have a tear in the FEP during a print, prevents resin from seeping down into the LCD/printer.

  • @debvoz

    This was a very interesting video and you presented a great deal of information in an easy to understand form. I do have a question about hardening the resin in the sun. Could you use one of the UV units that are created for UV hardening gel nail polish? They are small, self contained plug in units that are designed to have someone put their finger tips inside so the UV lights harden the polish on their nails. It seems like it should work and be much more reliable than taking it outside and hoping it is sunny.

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Debbie Vozniak Hi Debbie! Thank you for your kind words! Absolutely - using one of those units work very well. I actually use something similar in my follow up video where I review the Elegoo Mars Pro. In that video, I bought a small UV LED lamp and a turntable, which allows for the curing process to be controlled more than simply placing the unit in the sun. Can anyone please explain why doesn't MSLA need a wiper to clean the glass after each layer, while SLA does?
    (eg: Formlabs Form printer)

    • @williamforbes6919
      @williamforbes6919 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could be wrong, but I don't think there is any difference between them as far as the need for a wiper goes. Cheap MSLA printers are more vulnerable to having cured resin stick to their FEP layer and having debris or dislodged prints damage the LCD and tank.
      You can absolutely print without one, you just have one less safety device during operation.
      I would definitely expect and demand that kind of feature on a higher end expensive machine, the price point on these MSLA printers though is almost low enough for it to be understandable.

      Small because in order to keep costs down, they all use cheaply available smartphone LCD screens. So you're limited to the size of a smartphone. You could always build your own using a tablet screen. OR get higher resolution by switching to a 4K LCD screen.

    • @mikecyberey3586
      @mikecyberey3586 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is likely an exact clone of the anycubic photon, with some changes to reduce manufacturing costs, clearly apparent by the cheap cover, and incorrectly assembled USB port. You would think they would send review units with at least 1 QC check; so it is likely suspect to all similar flaws.

    That look very smooth for the size, i might consider that printer, im using an Ender 3 which is a 3d printer that makes a lot of noise but so far is doing the job well, i wonder how Ellego Mars is about noise reduction comparing to PLA printers?

      From what I’ve heard the Ender 3 is quite noisy - however I do not have any experience with this printer. However I can say that I do not find the noise of the Mars overly distracting. Since the motor does not use an x-y carriage to move a print head, he only sound coming from the printer is the fan.

      Vaibhav Gaikwad So far, the printer is used regularly and still going strong without any issues! The build volume of this machine is 120x68x155, so if these numbers x12 are larger than the heads you are trying to print, you should be good to go!

      @@SuperMakeSomething Thanks the 1/12 scale heads are really small, so I am sure the print size can be handled, just wanted to know the minimum resolution that it can print the details. Like the 1/12 head is almost 1.2 inch tall and 9 cms in width.

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You’re right - I did not call out the overall print time. In general, resin printing is faster for larger models (that use the whole build area), because you are exposing an entire layer at once. This is especially true for new printers that use “mono” LCD screens. A video about this technology and how it differs from the tech in the original Mars is coming soon, so stay tuned!

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stoppy chopper All 3D printing models generally start out as STL files, which are then sliced in their respective software (e.g. Cura for FDM and Chitubox for MSLA) in order to allow them to be printed on a specific machine. Therefore you can print the same models on both types of printers, as long as they are sliced with the correct software and settings for that printer.

      probably z-axis; moving parts on Mars are good but for the price not the best; before using printer one should test how smooth the head movement is by hand; sometimes rollers are to tight and need to be readjusted; sometimes precision is not superb and with rolling parts even the slightest inaccuracy will make a "bump"; stepper motor here is small and may not have enough power to overcome all the forces caused by those minor imperfections; I've used number of roiling elements from china and you just cannot compare linear slide costing $30 with a high precision one costing 10x more; when you slide those by hand you can feel occasional resistance as balls and roiling surfaces may not be highly precise; Elegoo Mars is cheap and you just don't have highest quality moving parts including rollers and lead screw; doing test by hand and using proper lubrication and sometimes adjustment can help improve z-axis movement; in other cases it could be something else but usually it is mechanics

    Great vid, congrats! Total newbie here, I guess you can't print colored models with this. What kind of machine would take in order to print let's say a head, and have the hair as one color, skin as another, the white of the eyes, etc? Many thanks!

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Unfortunately doing multicolored prints is impossible with MSLA machines, because resin gets hardened one layer at a time. Therefore, it is not possible to "section off" parts of a print to print different areas in different colors. Your best bet for this would be a dual/multi-extruder FDM machine. I am currently reviewing the QIDI Tech X-Pro, which has two extruders, so it can print in two different colors, so definitely stay tuned for that! Other options exist to allow multiple colors, like the "Palette" add-on from Prusa for example, which might be a good option, though I have not had the chance to try it yet. Hope this helps!

    Thanks so much for the good explanation. I was thinking all SLA printers used the method that is actually MSLA. Is laser (or standard, it seems) SLA common in the maker space?
    Love the resolution capability, but the chemicals/work environment concerns just seems like such a barrier to entry.

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  ปีที่แล้ว

      The most common “maker”-ish level SLA printers would probably be those from Formlabs, though I have not used them myself. Resin printing is definitely a bit more involved compared to FDM printing, so I typically decide which one to use depending on the intended application of the part.

    @Super Make Something Hey SMS, I have the question you probably get all the time! I'm after an affordable 3D printer with the ability to print smooth geometric type items (not characters or sculpture) as accurately as possible, in both firm and flexible (silicone-esque) type material. I love the smoothness of the Resin but does it shrink or do anything strange? I'm after close tolerances. Obviously I'm not expecting miracles with a $500 machine! But I think the Mars might be a good place to start, especially if it can do a flexible resin too and be somewhat accurate. Any suggestions appreciated. Tks.

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that there is some shrinkage with resin, but I have not quantified it. I also unfortunately do not have any experience with flexible resins, but I can say that the Mars is definitely a good choice as a resin printer based on my experience if you decide to go that route.
      In terms of other options for flexible filament, I've heard that the Ender 3 Pro is good for printing NinjaFlex. At this time, I do not have any hands-on time with this printer, but I may very soon and there may be a few social media posts on the way about this style of machine, so stay tuned... ;-)
      The Ender 3 Pro can be purchased here in case you are interested in going that route: amzn.to/35Rp9US

    • @SuperMakeSomething
      @SuperMakeSomething  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FDM printers are definitely another good option depending on what you are looking to do. They definitely have less of a cleanup complexity compared to resin printers, though the resolution won’t be as high. For an immediate recommendation, I would point to either the Creality Ender 5 or the Lotmaxx SC-10, as these have a good trade off between build volume and size. (Check out my videos on both of these printers for more info + affiliate links if you are interested.) I will be live-streaming about the JGAurora A5S this weekend, which has a massive build volume, so that might be a good choice as well. I am currently in the process of reviewing a dual extrusion printer as well, which can be used to print with dissolvable supports, so this overcomes issues related to support removal. Hopefully this will be up in the next month or two, so stay tuned!

    I am ready to buy my first resin printer. I am choosing resin because I create jewelry and they have the resin casting wax. Could you do a side by side of the few resin printers you have with casting wax and some jewelry models like rings with prongs so we can see if the claims that these will work are real? My hope is to print a casting tree whole on the sprue so I can eliminate molds, wax injecting and treeing by hand. When you think about small links for a bracelet (10 to 20 components) being done one by one compared to this it is going to make it possible to turn out more than one finished product in a week. If you can get a model of a casting tree with several jewelry items on it that would be the ultimate. Try asking Stuller as they make the software (rhino gold) to design these items. The other software is 3-design and Matrix they may want to promote theirs as well. Could be could source for a model file.
