    Naomi is legend HOWEVER, yasmeen was a better walker imo. Karl largerfeld even said it an interview saying that a lot of models try and copy her walk but can't. Even naomi said it in an interview that Yasmeen is the best.

    • @MalcolmSoaries

      Yes many people have referred me to that interview! Her walk is definitely the blueprint for how I see a lot of models even now still trying to walk! Yasmeen is ICONIC!!

      Good comment. The Naomi Yasmeen debate can be exhausting. Indeed Naomi is a legend for taking up residence in the the minds of the greater public - owing to her long and ongoing career and her unquestionable talent. I would argue Yasmeen is also a legend today, and largely because she is like a mythical creature who hasn't been seen since 1997, was largely forgotten only to be rediscovered in recent years, and now like a ghost from the past is capturing the imaginations of a new generation and challenging their assumptions on who the true queen of the catwalk might be.

    I also discovered Yameen Ghauri recently during pandemic and the more I watched her walk, the more convinced I was that she was a better catwalk than Naomi and possibly the best catwalker in history. I say this because of Yasmeen's incredible range. She could be a seductive femme fatale with her walk like Naomi and she could also be very elegant and feminine also, depending on the clothing. Furthermore her walks were so rich with nuances such as her impeccable turns, strong gaze, faux turns, hips, and the list of small details that set her apart goes on and on. It was a combination of incredibly body, intense gaze, and just a natural fluidity of movement that was like poetry in motion.

    • @MalcolmSoaries

      Honestly her walk was everything. Like I’m still floored and I’ll probably do another reaction to more runway walks because it’s hard to find footage of full runway shows from back then but I will try! She was iconic period

    • @ta-fo4iy
      @ta-fo4iy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      On the other hand I find Naomi's walk to be strong but very predictable. Some people even call it technical and formulaic. Nevertheless a very good walk. But just not the same range as Yasmeen. Yasmeen was creative on the catwalk and responded to context whereas Naomi stuck with what she knew well. A bit of a one size fits all approach.

    • @MalcolmSoaries
      @MalcolmSoaries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@ta-fo4iy I’ve seen the word predictable used about Naomis walk before. For me it’s the conviction. But also if Yasmeen decided to not retire I bet she’d have JUST have fierce of a walk today!

    • @ta-fo4iy
      @ta-fo4iy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MalcolmSoaries I hear you about the conviction. Naomi has a confidence that is alluring. Predictable is not necessarily a bad thing in that Naomi perfected a signature walk that works as a brand identity now for which she is internationally renown. Yasmeen also had signature qualities. She in fact started soft, developed a fierce walk in the early 90s and then softened again in the mid 90s and late 90s. 1992 was her year. Check out genny ss 1992 and Alma as 1992. She opened both shows and was particularly 'fierce' in the opening of genny ss 1992.

    Yasmeen was far better in my view. I had met and seen her at numerous shows in Paris in the 90s and the videos don’t do her any injustice. Watching her live on the runway looked at as if she was walking on air. The silhouette was like no other model either. Hourglass, tiny waist, curves. Every time I saw her in the shows everyone’s jaws dropped.
    I disagree that she was underrated, she never was underrated during her modelling years, she was one of the top 10 supermodels in the early 90s and chose to have a more personal profile than most girls during that time. As much as I love Naomi, Yasmeen just always beat her to the finish line with her walk.

      I totally agree! The media was more fixated on Linda, Christy, Cindy, and Naomi. There was an unwritten code in fashion, and still remains as such, that if there are 10 models, only one woman of color will shine, and Naomi was that one. In other words, the rest will be slept on, no matter how good they were/are, and that was all the media. That being said, Yasmeen is a runaway genius, the woman brought life to each designer's art unlike any other. She never failed to do so, and the designers loved her. I often say if Yasmeen hadn't left the fashion world, she would have garnered far more notoriety towards the turn of the 20th century. She was terrific!!

    I'll never forget a segment of her in the early 90s walking for Versace and she was nicknamed by a host of her fellow runway constituents... " The Panther" true story. Yasmeen and Naomi were still are among my favourite runway models. There was a certain mystique about Yasmeen that exuded from within and nobody could emulate. Everyone wanted to know her business yet she was somewhat guarded as to what she allowed the public to know. She did however maintain throughout her career that when she eventually 'quit the runways' she would indeed 'quit.' It broke my heart to hear those words, but true to her word she kept that mystique alive... no one has been able to coax her back. True Elusive Supermodel Mystery

    I am transgender and I have always loved fashion. I have always been fascinated by supermodels from the 80s onwards, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Elle Macpherson, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Iman, Paulina Porizkova, Helena Christensen, Tatjana Patitz, Stephanie Seymour, Kathy Ireland, Gia Carangi, Farida Khelfa, Rachel Hunter...all great models in there time...But Naomi Campbell stood out with her elegance and walk on the catwalk...she is a highly valued model, and now at 51 years old and she continues to shine on the catwalk. .. but when I met Yasmine, it was an amazing experience, for me, she is definitely a unique model in every sense of the word. Her self-confidence is excellent, when she walks down the catwalk she is a complete goddess... her movements, her steps, make her unique... Although she officially retired from modeling in 1997 to adapt to life as a mother, philanthropist and private citizen , the impact of Ghauri is still being felt. With the industry once again embracing diversity and a new generation of multicultural stars gaining prominence, Ghauri stands out as a trailblazer. As a big fan of 90s supermodels, I will give you my fair share of Naomi and Yasmeen's runway walks. Yasmeen had a much, MUCH better figure than Naomi for accentuating the clothes in the runway. She was taller than Naomi and had a more statuesque physique. Broad athletic shoulders, yet packed with a curvaceous chest and booty (Naomi had a more athlete's chest, with a female warrior-like thighs and abdomens to die for). What really made Yasmeen's figure stand out, however, was that tiny, petite waist of hers (Christy Turlington was probably the other only model whose waist contrasted so much with the rest of her measurements). That tiny waist really accentuated the rest of her features, giving her a femme fatale silhouette. It made her look like a real-life Disney Princess Jasmine with those unreal proportions. Her silhouette alone is what already captivated the eyes of clients. The way the clothes just naturally fit on her, and the way her figure enhanced those garments really gave her an edge in this area over Naomi. I remember when Givenchy did the Organza perfume line, the bottle of the perfume was modeled after Yasmeen's figure, as she had the quintessential hourglass figure. It was pretty obvious for that matter that she became the face of the Organza perfume line.
    Now, in terms of walk, I will say Naomi's walk was more classic and timeless, hence why it aged so well, while Yasmeen's was great for its time, though a bit dated by today's standards. For starters, Naomi had a more symmetrical walk. She had even distribution of power in both her legs and arms, swinging both arms back and forth, while crisscrossing both legs. Yasmeen, on the other hand, had a dominant arm. She would swing her right arm a lot harder than the left (sometimes a bit too violently), while she would normally have her left arm held onto her waist or have it locked in a stiff position. This created her signature ball-swiveling effect that she is known for. It gave the illusion that her legs would dislocate with every kick and swing of her right arm.
    When it comes to leg work, you will see that on average, Yasmeen took more steps, while Naomi took fewer steps. This is because Yasmeen preferred to go for shorter but faster strides, while Naomi preferred longer but slower strides. This created the illusion that Naomi was more calm and collected, while Yasmeen was more tense and ready to take over the runway with her badass walk. In this respect, I find Naomi's walk superior, as it came off more disciplined, with enough restraint. Also, when Naomi stepped, her feet would be in a ballerina downward angle position, while Yasmeen did this unique thing of spinning her feet by bringing each feet closer to the center, every time she stepped forward (her feet would be angled inward to the center instead of pointing straight forward into the runway).
    In terms of hip gyration, both were notorious for having the sexiest and most seductive hips. Their hips sure don't lie. Yasmeen's hips were a lot smaller than Naomi's, and her torso was a lot longer, so when she gyrated her hips, she slithered like a black mamba. Naomi's hip, on the other hand, waved at lower frequency, giving her a more modest but controlled look. Yasmeen's hips were just a bit too much and exaggerated sometimes, but when appropriate for the situation, they were on fire. In this regard, Naomi was far more consistent at delivering good hip work, but Yasmeen's best would outdo Naomi's best.
    Lastly, the notorious 90s twirl. In this department, NO ONE beats Naomi. She was the smoothest feline in the catwalk. Her transition from walking while removing a jacket, to stopping at the end of the runway to pose, and then to twirl and turn back was just a visual orgasm. She would do it looking like a fabulous diva, while we peasants be blinded by the shimmering light coming from this goddess. She was like a smooth criminal. She came, she saw, and she conquered. She would kick her a leg out to do the twirl while giving us shoe cam, and would fling the skirt of the dress to emphasize its roundness and floridness. Her walk would just breathe life into the dress. Yasmeen, on the other hand, took her time to do the twirl. She would calmly pause, pose, twirl, and then walk back. While she did it amazingly, this would disturb the flow of motion of the dress from walk to pose to twirl to pose and back to walk, as if the dance and music suddenly stopped before resetting back again. It also made it seem like she was less confident than Naomi on this part of the runway, as twirling is the most likely place for models to slip. This is why, she came off as more careful in this section of the walk.
    Overall, I give the walk to Naomi, but the figure definitely goes to Yasmeen. Notice, I didn't dissect all aspects of runway walking, such as creative showmanship of a garment's full potential, as I think other models excel more than both Yasmeen and Naomi in this department (Carla Bruni was the master at this).

      Excellent analysis. One thing to note about Yasmeen's pause and pose twirl routine is that when she paused, she would gaze out at the audience holding their attention before swiftly twirling and sashaying away. The pauses were not so much a disruption of the twirl, but an integral part intended to seduce - in some cases in a dramatic femme fatale way.

      Yasmeen is a legend. She isn’t an underrated model. If you were around during this time, you would know she was fantastic. Why she wasn’t included in the Peter Lindbergh didn’t include her with Christy, Tatiana, Claudia, Naomi and Linda, I’ll never understand. She was just as relevant and beautiful. Was it a personality thing? Yasmeen didn’t party like the others. She was private, bowing out of modeling to marry and raise a family.

    Something I just realized when I was high....lol Yasmeen gets the character of the clothing. She is every woman. She plays a different role for each outfit which is brilliant. It feels very similiar to Leon Dame, in that he merges into what the clothes are saying. Where as the clothes merge into what Naomi is saying. In this case Naomi has the stronger walk because her personal power "charisma" is stronger. I don't know anything about fashion but for some reason just started watching catwalk videos and I am starting to realize that it can really be a fine art. If a model is not representing either of the two spectrums I just mentioned, it seems to me that they are basically walking Mannequins. That's just my humble opinion.

    I cannot believe someone still didnt know about Yasmeen, and at the same time it is exquisit to see you watching her for the first time. Yasmeen and Naomi were part of a fashion world that no longer exists, a time when the amount of talents required to get to that possition was so much higuer. They both had their seal, Yasmeen was the Lady, yet seductive and Naomi was the Exuberance, the strong one. They both completely ruled the fashion of the 90s in their own characters, they usually shared the runway with the other icons: Linda, Helena, Nadja Huermann, Carla Bruni, Claudia, etc. I remember it was so exciting to see the news with the new shows (pre internet era) each season was something new and amazing, to me the 90s were definitely richer and stronger in terms of fashion shows and fashion in general. Yasmeen figure on the catwalk is insane, the face, the hair, the body, the hips, the spins, everything so perfectly put together that she really looks like a God like figure. She looks premium, elegant, feminine, the epitome of sophistication.

    IMHO Yasmeen (along with Iman) is the greatest runway model of all time. Naomi is a legend & has had a longer career & hence is more famous while Yasmeen retired early & kept a low profile. Naomi’s walk has improved over the years, but in the early years she used to try to copy Yasmeen’s hip swing but didn’t know what to do with her arms, which just dangled lifelessly by the sides. But that’s just my opinion.

    Hi Malcom, Yasmeen is definitely UNDERATED. I went to her shows back in the 90's. Yasmeen werked the RUNWAY. Naomi also gave her her 10's. Yasmeen was OVA!!!!!!!! I LIVED FOR HER. I was 25 years old going to her and Naomi shows. When you saw Naomi you saw Yasmeen with a very put pose walk and the walk was OVA as she took the left leg and planted it on the end of the runway. it was like a horse saying...IT'S ALL OVA FROM THIS POINT. 60 years old now and I still live for her YASMEEN old Runway videos. Yasmeen was a Chanel girl and a Guess girl later one of the first stars for Victorias Secret. Definitely one of the best that ever did it Runway Print and campaign.

  • @alright14
    @alright14 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I think you’re opinionated, but at the same time, you should be knowing that naomi was a flappy-bird throughout the 90s, her arms were swinging whereas Yasmeen’s posture and walk was really neat.
    Saying constantly “ it’s the legs, face , hips and again”, just say that you’re opinionated and you’re team Naomi for sure because you can’t see beyond her. You’re just supporting her because she paved the way for all the black models with Iman.
    Well the same goes for Yasmeen, the first model ever to score a luxury beauty contract with a south asian heritage. She paved the way for all the exotic models as well.
    Naomi models to date, people talk about her, Yasmeen modelled for about 10 years and people still talk about her.
    Yasmeen ate naomi up everytime on the runway with all her fellow supermodels.
    Yasmeen career was beyond than any average girl. A model who had the capability to get herself booked at Gianni Versace within a span of two years of her career reading speaks for itself.
    I strongly disagree with what you’re saying about Naomi all the way through considering that you’re a black yourself so it’s pretty apparent that you’re gonna support people of the same race as you. And I am not racist, Naomi is lovely, but Yasmeen is beyond Naomi.

    • @MalcolmSoaries
      @MalcolmSoaries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be honest I only support talent it actually has nothing to do with race because my favorite music artist is Britney Spears LOL but also Yasmeen is iconic I just think Naomi has the better walk. I wouldn’t say like stronger impact or influence because I’ve learned more about Yasmeen now. I was just talking about walks only. I’m team Naomi but I’m team anyone who masters their craft!!! Which they both have done beautifully!

      @@rozeara The ramp? Lol. I do agree with you that Naomi's confidence was consistently there whereas Yasmeen wavered. She had some mild walks. Although Yasmeen at her best was a force. I keep thinking of that iconic Versace SS 1992 black dress moment, and Oscar de la Renta SS 1992, the Genny 1992 SS red dress, Claude Montana, Laura Biagiotti, Chanel, and several other shows that Yasmeen absolutely stole in 1992. I believe Yasmeen peaked in 1992 with her 'fierce' walk, and descended thereafter with a much softer - albeit very feminine and elegant walk. By 1997, she really did seem like she was on her way out. It could have been that the 'grunge' look did not really fit her regal looks. It could be that Yasmeen simply did not like modeling (as stated by her friend Gail Elliot), but she was professional enough to deliver a quality service.

    Yasmeen will always be NO.1 she had so much charisma and is gorgeous she always added something to the walk. They used to put her in the highest priced fashions because she'd make the sell out within seconds. Anyone who's never heard of her doesn't know fashion. I think she's underrated because she retired early to start a family so many wouldn't know of her unless you was in the era. She modelled for every designer under the sun.
