The weirdest thing is that when I look back to watching these movies for the first time the animation doesn't seem bad at all, all I remember is the magical worlds, beautiful dresses, the music, the ballet performances and of coarse the desperation to BE the protagonists of the movies.
I like that they copy and paste. It helps me create a big, connecting universe with the films, with certain characters showing up in multiple films or have relatives in other films, and the different inanimate object and animal cameos help to determine the relationships and communication between the different kingdoms. Eventually I developed one giant theory about the Barbie movie timeline.
I'm honestly a little shocked that you never mentioned the fact that Princess Lucianna from Island Princess was a total sweetheart and actually helped Ro prove her innocence by exposing her mother's plan to poison the prince and king.
i felt a little disappointed on how you didn't pointed out the relationship between the main couple in the Magic of Pegasus. They both have actual personalities and don't magically fall in love on first sight, they have a good relationship development

The villain being such a creep was a good thing to me. They're supposed to be terrible and to make you root for their downfall. He was the only Barbie vilain to actually creep me out as a child.
one of the things about the princess and the pauper that upon rewatching made me love the movie even more is that erika doesn't decide to marry dominick straight away, instead going on her own to pursue her dream to be a famous singer the best part to me is that dominick never put pressure on erika to not follow her passion, instead encouraging her and making it clear that he'll be there if she ever comes back, which she does after accomplishing her goal!! honestly, that's the best barbie couple to me

I know! My name is Erika and as a kid, I've always been mildly annoyed that I had the same name as the pauper and not the princess (because who doesn't want to be royalty as a kid?). When I rewatched it as a teenager though, I realized that it is such an honor to have the same name as Erika because she is a total queen! She's my favorite Barbie character!
Idk I liked Barbie a mermaid tail, Barbie a fashion fairy tail, Barbie a fairy secret, Barbie as the island princess mermaid thing, Barbie and the diamond castle, and Barbie pearl princess or whatever, and Barbie and the three musketeers. Oh Barbie and the pink shoes was okay even though she was king of annoying especially in Barbie princess charm school. Either way I liked em. OMG I forgot that Barbie movie but the one with the small fairies and she had fake wings and there was the rich kid and her toxic rich friend. Yeah the good old days.
Fairytopia taught me a great lesson when the blue fairy said how she was saving all those seats for "the friends that she hasn't met yet" or at least that's the translation from Spanish. That line really stuck to me as I had no friends growing up but got to make some great friends in middle school who are currently going to be my bridesmaids in my wedding 🥰
Odette's ballerina outfit is pretty awesome too :D It's not entirely pink, has different types of blue and purple; it's lovely X3 The peacock dress is just aamzing, so beauitful and unique! One of the best dresses! I like Elina's new wings in Mermaidia, her mermaid form as well; so shiny and the roses were pretty!

The slander on Magic of Pegasus omgggg…It was the first original Barbie story that actually holds up for me (as whimsical and nostalgic Fairytopia is it’s so criminally boring). It was the first time Mattel had the balls to give Barbie a personality other than nice and meek and happy-go-lucky for the purpose of character development. Her angst directly leads to the main conflict when her whole kingdom freezes due to her refusing to listen to her parents. Notice that in every other movie before this, the Barbie protagonist is pushed into the conflict instead of instigating it (the plot happens to her, rather than her motivating the plot). Annika’s parents are justified in their helicopter-style of parenting because they weren’t able to protect their other daughter Brietta from being cursed. They believe that constant monitoring over their only remaining child will keep her out of harm’s way, which is definitely invasive to Annika, but reasonable in perspective. They may be unlikebale but it’s odd you don’t acknowledge why they act the way they do. It’s also not like they don’t allow her to go out - Annika is a minor and SHOULD at least ask her parents before going out. The teen angst in this movie is honestly so real; teens tend to think they are more mature than they actually are and begin to resent their authority figures who mean well but, to their eyes, restrict the freedoms they haven’t yet proved to fully deserve. It is established that Annika has a pattern of disobeying and sneaking out, so the conflict is of her own doing. Aidan is easily my favorite love interest because he is flawed, just like the main protagonist. Annika and Aidan learn to grow together through the lessons of hope and perseverance the journey teaches them. They also have to realize together what acting with a “true heart” really means; Aidan let’s go of the greed that led him to losing his family’s money and only takes what he needs to fix the problem he caused, and Annika is only able to harness the magic of the Wand of Light through the love of her family and kingdom, not the anger and resentment she held when she wanted to destroy Wenlock (I absolutely love that scene cause it’s the one moment a Barbie character flat out says she wants to kill someone lol). It also helps that Aidan is as spunky and sarcastic as Annika. They are meant for each other :3 No doubt that Wenlock is a HUGE creep and an accurate depiction of narcissism, but I honestly think it worked in the movie’s favor. It’s definitely a reach to say they are equal flaws, but Annika and Aidan’s issues were rooted in selfishness as well. Having the villain be the absolute height of egomania and self-importance helps us see better how much of an effort they are making to fix their wrongs out of pure selflessness. I also like that the villain is already a personal enemy to the family. I think it raises the stakes by establishing what he could do to further harm Annika, her family, and her kingdom. It’s also completely valid that you weren’t fond of the ice skating. If I’m correct it’s the only movie with ice-skating being a major skill that the Barbie protagonist specializes in, specifically within the dance-centric movies. Maybe many other kids preferred ballet? 🤷♀️ Also no argument can win in defense of Shiver. She’s an absolute abomination no matter how cute she is and should’ve been left in the cloud castle or something like what were they thinking bringing her??? I’m just rambling at this point but this movie is definitely one I learned to love rather than one I was nostalgic for or fond of as a kid. It’s an easy second best behind Princess and the Pauper, but really only because I love the music and songs from that movie. But though both hold equal footing for me regarding their aesthetic and story, interesting and successful character development is what really makes Pegasus stand out. It was the first good non-adaptation movie from this franchise, and I feel like it really holds up!
Absolutely agree I think it was the barbie movie I saw the most often as a kid and it was defintely my favorite I think the only reason MG doesn't get it is because she hasn't seen it as a kid so she can't connect to it as an adult because it's such a good movie, the story is not boring at all and the characters are so well developed Plus it's really the only barbie movie where the romantic relationship is not shallow and they actually flirt in a subtle way

that was one of my favorites too, the feathers kinda ruin it but like other than that its so pretty especially the vibrant color, you really only saw barbie in pastel colors back then so the bright blue really stood out against the other barbie movie dresses

while the 2000s barbie movies remain superior to the current movies, I would argue that the quality barbie content isn't in movies anymore but in their online presence like barbie: life in the dreamhouse or the barbie vlogs. it's just interesting to see the shift in medium between generations

I love the bloopers, it reminds me that Barbie has acted in all these movies which I think is a really cool detail. But also when it comes to Fairy Secret or Fashion Fairytale it gets confusing. Like you want me to believe fairies exist even in Barbie’s REAL LIFE?!?! Ok.
i agree with almost everything but the scene in Rapunzel where she is changing dresses was EVERYTHING to me, the music is just so magical and the animation was incredible to me at that time
Haha I used to rewatch Charm School a lot during my childhood even though I hated Barbie, if it’s the one I think you’re talking about. I didn’t really like the plot- she’s the generic poor girl chosen for the school and she’s actually adopted, her birth mother is the late queen who was killed by her evil sister. I agree, I was a mid-generation barbie stan in that I was 3 when nutcracker came out. Diamond castle was probably in the top three best barbie movies for me personally lol. I think Princess Charm school was the last barbie movie I liked mostly because it was one of the first ones I got to watch with my younger sister.

anneliese's hardships may seem smaller compared to erica's who's been trying to repay her parents' debt, anneliese has a whole kingdom's stability on her shoulders. when faced with a dire problem where you know you are responsible for not only yourself but a whole group, the pressure can be suffocating.
that's so true - just because it isn't stated or obvious doesn't mean it isn't there - plus, apart from the kingdom, being forced to marry someone is so awful. Maybe they could have focused a little more on her struggles because I think they spent more time with Erika's struggles and that's why people usually like her more.
I thought the movie did a good job at putting equal weight and validation on each of the girl's hardships, especially in the song Free. Then there is Julian's to be a princess and as a kid altho i enjoyed that song i thought wow thats a lot of things to remember all the time 0x0 being a princess is hard.
Also interesting to note is that it is ERIKA who puts equal weight on their problems. Annelise is hesitant to share because she KNOWS her problems might seem meaningless to someone stuck in indentured servitude, and she doesn't allow herself to compare it in equal weight until Erika understands the pressures she must be feeling and basically tells her she has every right to feel trapped by those expectations.
Looking back I thing it was this movie and the swan lake that made want to go to ballet classes but the 12 dancing princess it’s definitely my favorite and I regret every day of my life the fact that I quit ballet

Basically my life 😂😂 My daughters name is Annelieze and mines Erika.. and she’s def the princess and I the servant 😂😂 I didn’t name her after the character.. when we found the movie it was so fun to have the characters have our names.. shes 13 now and still has her dvd 😅
My favorite barbie movie was "The Magic of Pegasus" It was pretty different from the average princess story and especially the love interest. I also remember having a crush on Wenlock for his heterochromia. I also had a pc game of the movie. I would always spend hours on that game.
The biggest thing I remember from the fairytopia series, is being super salty about the fact that Elina never got a new hairstyle with her magical transformations 😂
I remember waiting during all the movies for the moment when she is going to release her hair and look like how she did on the CD/DVD cover... and I waited..until the very end of the movie....... to be disappointed;-;
My biggest problem with Fairytopia was when she got wings and it was meant to be this big magical moment and she got these basic-ass plain pink wings. 😑
Barbie Princess Charm school is not scary. It's just how animation is these days and I love it. It's good that Barbie has finally evolved and taken on new life forces with different names and producers referencing her whenever creating a cute movie.
Why is no one talking about how GOD TIER the soundtrack from Island Princess was? Like "I Need to Know" and the Lullaby song are literally two of the most memorable Barbie songs I've ever heard. Even the mice song was striking! 😆💕 Seriously love the soundtrack of that movie. The music is right up there along with Diamond Castle and TPATP for me!
Barbie And The Diamond Castle was such a huge thing in my life. It was the theme of many of my birthday parties! I like the ones that were about Barbie and some brunette friend because I have a twin sister who doesn't look like me at all, I'm blonde so I would be Barbie and she has brown hair so she would be the friend and we would always see ourselves in the movies. Such a fun time

Mermaidia was my whole childhood. And don't even get me started on Bibble...such an icon! And the intense scenes with the underwater volcanos and the evil algae. This movie. Everything. But I also totally get why Princess and the Pauper is at first place. Just Mermaidia holds a special place in my heart :)

I was 8 or 9 when the Christmas carol came out and I loved it as a kid it’s definitely in my top few Barbie movies. Even as I kid I found it so refreshing that the main character wasn’t all perfect pure and she grew throughout the story

I think it was a massive shock to see normal, boring, flawed Victorian people after all the films up until that point being full of bright colours and happy magical animals etc. I'm blaming it for my unnecessary and sometimes inexplicable hatred for any and all Christmas Carol adaptations lol 🤣

I think the reason why The Barbie Diaries has such a bad animation is because all the budget for that year's Barbie movies went to The Magic of Pegasus. It was the first time they made a 3D movie So they were extra careful with the animation and movements. The DVD even came with 5 pairs of 3D glasses. Regardless, two classica which I adore just like the other ones. ✨✨✨❤️💚💙💖💜💓💕✨✨✨
12 Dancing Princesses will always be my favorite. A large part of this is nostalgia and the fact that I had never seen anyone else with my name before watching the movie.

Aiden kind of reminds me of The Prodigal Son, the father gave him riches, he set out, he lost it all, was afraid to return to his father and when he did his father embraced him stating he still loved him and all was good. Obviously some differences from the Biblical story vs. the Barbie version, but I can still see it

About the size of the fairies, I for whatever reason thought they just lived in giant flowers? Like they lived in flowers the size of houses or something. I guess I never noticed they could actually be really small.

The twelve dancing princesses is a bittersweet movie for my sister. She wanted as kid to dance ballet, but never got the chance because of economical situacion. To this day, she cries watching that movie. It became a painful memory of her childhood...
Magic of Pegasus was actually one of my favorites. The romance of the story was great, and the villian is really villinous. Pluss they have a good sister story, and ice skating and balet have the same leval of intrest for me. My other two favorites are "the princess and the pauper" and "the 12 dancing princesses"
Princess and the Pauper is straight-up Broadway calibre. Its plot and songs are so highly developed for a children's movie. I can't believe a company known only for making dolls managed to write a song like 'How Could I Refuse'.
i believe barbie and the magic of pegasus needs to be recognized for the endearing enemies to lovers trope ! it was so entertaining and fun to see aidan and princess annika go from exchanging sassy and sarcastic lines to looking out for one another and falling in love with each other’s perseverance and determination, and at the end becoming a couple. shiver always did cause some trouble but i can admit he’s so adorable!

Probably my favorite thing about the Barbie movies is the constant interlining storylines for instance Barbie is an actor in all this films, as explained in fashion fairytale and fairy secret.

I know everyone puts princess and the pauper as their number one but to me magic of Pegasus is the goat. It is the sassiest Barbie movie with Barbie having a lot more of a personality and Adin being of the most developed love interests. Plus the movie was just fun as hell.

I thought the criticism was overkill too, but the Barbie diaries is unironically good ??! 😭 maybe it’s just my nostalgia talking but the Barbie diaries had probably the most compelling storyline for me.
When I rediscovered Swan Lake, I realized how much I was like Odette. The message of the film is one of the ones that speaks most to me, having pretty bad anxiety that's the reason why I never really lived my life for a few years. The movie helped me realize as an adult that I am braver than I think. I also love the music as well!
What I absolutely love about Barbie and the Pegasus is how at first when they make the wand and she tries to use it doesn't work because it has to come from true heart or something like that that had a lot of effect on me as a child
I don't think that the villain in Swan Lake was intentionally Jewish-looking, I think they were probably trying to evoke his bird form in his human face, so gave him an exaggerated "beaky" face. But I get the point that it is used too often in animation.
I almost checked out after that argument. It's just so far fetched, like if you want to look for racism in anything you can if you just make broad realizations that have nothing to do with the characters. Just kind of dumb in my opinion. one of the things about the princess and the pauper that upon rewatching made me love the movie even more is that erika doesn't decide to marry dominick straight away, instead going on her own to pursue her dream to be a famous singer
the best part to me is that dominick never put pressure on erika to not follow her passion, instead encouraging her and making it clear that he'll be there if she ever comes back, which she does after accomplishing her goal!! honestly, that's the best barbie couple to me

The slander on Magic of Pegasus omgggg…It was the first original Barbie story that actually holds up for me (as whimsical and nostalgic Fairytopia is it’s so criminally boring). It was the first time Mattel had the balls to give Barbie a personality other than nice and meek and happy-go-lucky for the purpose of character development. Her angst directly leads to the main conflict when her whole kingdom freezes due to her refusing to listen to her parents. Notice that in every other movie before this, the Barbie protagonist is pushed into the conflict instead of instigating it (the plot happens to her, rather than her motivating the plot).
Annika’s parents are justified in their helicopter-style of parenting because they weren’t able to protect their other daughter Brietta from being cursed. They believe that constant monitoring over their only remaining child will keep her out of harm’s way, which is definitely invasive to Annika, but reasonable in perspective. They may be unlikebale but it’s odd you don’t acknowledge why they act the way they do. It’s also not like they don’t allow her to go out - Annika is a minor and SHOULD at least ask her parents before going out. The teen angst in this movie is honestly so real; teens tend to think they are more mature than they actually are and begin to resent their authority figures who mean well but, to their eyes, restrict the freedoms they haven’t yet proved to fully deserve. It is established that Annika has a pattern of disobeying and sneaking out, so the conflict is of her own doing.
Aidan is easily my favorite love interest because he is flawed, just like the main protagonist. Annika and Aidan learn to grow together through the lessons of hope and perseverance the journey teaches them. They also have to realize together what acting with a “true heart” really means; Aidan let’s go of the greed that led him to losing his family’s money and only takes what he needs to fix the problem he caused, and Annika is only able to harness the magic of the Wand of Light through the love of her family and kingdom, not the anger and resentment she held when she wanted to destroy Wenlock (I absolutely love that scene cause it’s the one moment a Barbie character flat out says she wants to kill someone lol). It also helps that Aidan is as spunky and sarcastic as Annika. They are meant for each other :3
No doubt that Wenlock is a HUGE creep and an accurate depiction of narcissism, but I honestly think it worked in the movie’s favor. It’s definitely a reach to say they are equal flaws, but Annika and Aidan’s issues were rooted in selfishness as well. Having the villain be the absolute height of egomania and self-importance helps us see better how much of an effort they are making to fix their wrongs out of pure selflessness. I also like that the villain is already a personal enemy to the family. I think it raises the stakes by establishing what he could do to further harm Annika, her family, and her kingdom.
It’s also completely valid that you weren’t fond of the ice skating. If I’m correct it’s the only movie with ice-skating being a major skill that the Barbie protagonist specializes in, specifically within the dance-centric movies. Maybe many other kids preferred ballet? 🤷♀️
Also no argument can win in defense of Shiver. She’s an absolute abomination no matter how cute she is and should’ve been left in the cloud castle or something like what were they thinking bringing her???
I’m just rambling at this point but this movie is definitely one I learned to love rather than one I was nostalgic for or fond of as a kid. It’s an easy second best behind Princess and the Pauper, but really only because I love the music and songs from that movie. But though both hold equal footing for me regarding their aesthetic and story, interesting and successful character development is what really makes Pegasus stand out. It was the first good non-adaptation movie from this franchise, and I feel like it really holds up!

that's so true - just because it isn't stated or obvious doesn't mean it isn't there - plus, apart from the kingdom, being forced to marry someone is so awful. Maybe they could have focused a little more on her struggles because I think they spent more time with Erika's struggles and that's why people usually like her more.

I thought the movie did a good job at putting equal weight and validation on each of the girl's hardships, especially in the song Free. Then there is Julian's to be a princess and as a kid altho i enjoyed that song i thought wow thats a lot of things to remember all the time 0x0 being a princess is hard.
Also interesting to note is that it is ERIKA who puts equal weight on their problems. Annelise is hesitant to share because she KNOWS her problems might seem meaningless to someone stuck in indentured servitude, and she doesn't allow herself to compare it in equal weight until Erika understands the pressures she must be feeling and basically tells her she has every right to feel trapped by those expectations.

Hehe, when I learned Kelly Sheridan was the voice of Starlight Glimmer in Gen 4 of My Little Pony (she started out as a villain but then became good and my fav char in the franchise), I was like, "OMG Barbie joined MLP!" Lol.

Mermaidia was my whole childhood. And don't even get me started on Bibble...such an icon! And the intense scenes with the underwater volcanos and the evil algae. This movie. Everything. I always thought that the people native to the Mariposa kingdom had kinda Hispanic accents because Mariposa is literally Spanish for butterfly (besides the character herself and her periwinkle colored friend bc idk, well known voice actors?)

I was 8 or 9 when the Christmas carol came out and I loved it as a kid it’s definitely in my top few Barbie movies. Even as I kid I found it so refreshing that the main character wasn’t all perfect pure and she grew throughout the story

Barbie:a Christmas Carol absolutely TRAUMATISED ME I thought it was so awful and dark when I watched it. I think it was a massive shock to see normal, boring, flawed Victorian people after all the films up until that point being full of bright colours and happy magical animals etc. I'm blaming it for my unnecessary and sometimes inexplicable hatred for any and all Christmas Carol adaptations lol 🤣

I think the reason why The Barbie Diaries has such a bad animation is because all the budget for that year's Barbie movies went to The Magic of Pegasus. It was the first time they made a 3D movie So they were extra careful with the animation and movements. The DVD even came with 5 pairs of 3D glasses. Regardless, two classica which I adore just like the other ones. ✨✨✨❤️💚💙💖💜💓💕✨✨✨

About the size of the fairies, I for whatever reason thought they just lived in giant flowers? Like they lived in flowers the size of houses or something. I guess I never noticed they could actually be really small.

The twelve dancing princesses is a bittersweet movie for my sister. She wanted as kid to dance ballet, but never got the chance because of economical situacion. To this day, she cries watching that movie. It became a painful memory of her childhood...

Magic of Pegasus was actually one of my favorites. The romance of the story was great, and the villian is really villinous. Pluss they have a good sister story, and ice skating and balet have the same leval of intrest for me.
My other two favorites are "the princess and the pauper" and "the 12 dancing princesses"
Princess and the Pauper is straight-up Broadway calibre. Its plot and songs are so highly developed for a children's movie. I can't believe a company known only for making dolls managed to write a song like 'How Could I Refuse'.

i believe barbie and the magic of pegasus needs to be recognized for the endearing enemies to lovers trope ! it was so entertaining and fun to see aidan and princess annika go from exchanging sassy and sarcastic lines to looking out for one another and falling in love with each other’s perseverance and determination, and at the end becoming a couple.

Probably my favorite thing about the Barbie movies is the constant interlining storylines for instance Barbie is an actor in all this films, as explained in fashion fairytale and fairy secret.
It physically hurt me when you put Island Princess, Diamond Castle and Rapunzel so low T_T I totally respect your opinion, and a lot of my fondness of these movies probably stem from childhood nostalgia, but those three are some of my favorite Barbie movies :')

I thought the criticism was overkill too, but the Barbie diaries is unironically good ??! 😭 maybe it’s just my nostalgia talking but the Barbie diaries had probably the most compelling storyline for me.
When I rediscovered Swan Lake, I realized how much I was like Odette. The message of the film is one of the ones that speaks most to me, having pretty bad anxiety that's the reason why I never really lived my life for a few years. The movie helped me realize as an adult that I am braver than I think. I also love the music as well!
What I absolutely love about Barbie and the Pegasus is how at first when they make the wand and she tries to use it doesn't work because it has to come from true heart or something like that that had a lot of effect on me as a child
I don't think that the villain in Swan Lake was intentionally Jewish-looking, I think they were probably trying to evoke his bird form in his human face, so gave him an exaggerated "beaky" face. But I get the point that it is used too often in animation.
