I also appreciate how Dionna and Cher's clothing provides friendship context. Their outfits support each other, but Dionne is NOT Cher's clone nor sycophant.
RIGHT! like when I was looking at the part where they said they wanted to make sure dionne's outfit didn't outshine cher's I thought 'I'm sorry but you failed'
Dang I just realized that Clueless, a movie that was made in the 90s, has way more representations and diversity than more recent movies in the past years. It's honestly impressive
And it's really sex positive too! Tai is not shamed for having had sex and neither is Cher (besides by Tai in their fight but it's more to point to her inexperience in matters that Tai knows more about than the actual virginity itself). Christian is not outcast or otherwise seen as lesser for being gay. Really great representation on many fronts.
I would argue that Cher is a somewhat likable character from the start, because while she's self absorbed and yes, clueless, she's also genuine. She's popular because she's always been popular, but she's no Regina George. Cher simply wouldn't see the point in telling someone she loved their skirt and trash talk it behind their back. Her primary motivation for setting up her teachers wasn't selfless, but in the end she cares the most that she's made them happy. She believes her popularity to be a universal good and she's not entirely wrong. She's a thoughtful leader, maybe because she's so used to mothering her own father. You can see her organizing hang outs throughout the film and when she loses interest in that, their friend group quickly splinters. As for Amber, I don't think her and Cher were ever that close. I think they hang out because they're from the same neighborhood and economic background, maybe they're family friends. To Amber, it must look like Cher gets everything you could want- attention from the most popular boy, the queen of the school status, the grades- without even trying. Cher on the other hand doesn't seem to take Amber seriously at all, she just smiles and rolls her eyes at Amber's jabs. It suggests that she's used to that behavior which is why I don't think their frienemy dynamic is a new thing.
I agree. She's likable, always trying to make sure that her father gets his vitamins. She's very positive in the sense that she is privileged. And instead of saying nice things about people, like an "I love your skirt" when she doesn't, she tries to find the best way to say truths she considers hard ("Tai, you look terrible") in a sweet way. Her problem is not that she has bad intentions, it's that she's fifteen, nearly sixteen, and thinks she knows more than she actually does. That's a forgivable flaw in a teenager, as long as she gets rid of it.
I hate how people assume “Oh you’re popular so you must be bratty and mean” while some popular kids can be a bit rude, most people are popular because they’re so friendly to everyone. They’re always sitting at large tables, they have a good sense of humor and are nice to all their teachers. At least that’s what the popular kids at my school are like
I swear, I literally wanted (still want to) to be Dionne. I love how this film had her wear braids. This movie is one of my favorites because I loved how they portrayed a preppy, posh black girl living in Beverly Hills. Like for once, we weren't a negative stereotype, you know?
Yess! One of my FAVORITE aspects of this movie. Like the mc can be preppy rich and affluent too while also being a poc. I feel like movies and tv shows lose touch of that sometimes.
I found it interesting how she’s still very Black in her style but is also preppy. A lot of Preppy Black charters in 1990s / 2000s were totally white washed to dress exactly like their white counterparts. Dion still retained her Blackness
Cher is clueless but in a sweet and innocent way. Thats what makes her so likable. She means well but is ultimately so out of touch. That's why we all like her!
She mostly means well but her privilege makes her clueless. She lives in her own little world. She thinks what she does is altruistic but her priorities are more vain and isn’t nearly as helpful as she thinks.
@@alyssagangi5341 exactly & her lesson is not to be so stuck in her head - not to be kinder because she already is kind. She just has to learn how to apply it properly without being so blinded by her own privilege lens and filter.
@@petalchild yes!! Her lesson was to see how to apply her kindness, generosity and big heart without the lens filter of her privilege. She just had to learn how to apply it properly.
One thing I noticed about Dione is that while Cher is typically seen wearing primary colours (the yellow set, red dress, pastel blue shirt), Dione wears a lot more secondary colours. I think this shows how even though they’re very coordinated as friends they also have distinctly their own style and what colours they’re drawn to more
PLEASE-- Cher and Dionne even made her curls pop better!!! as someone who is only learning to take care of their curly hair in their late teens that moment was so important 💗💗💗
@@gracetaylorsversion3815 the most vivid image that springs up with this trope is from The Princess Diaries. It's so ridiculous that we were supposed to find Anne Hathaway "ugly". She looked cute with her curly hair.
EXACTLY! Back then big hair was THE style, even though I'm 14 lol! Now everyone wants slick back long hair down the back hair, and you get criticised for having big hair
I love how they didn’t make all the extras wear boring clothes like most other films. It shows that they didn’t need to make everyone else’s outfits “boring” to make the main characters outfits shine. Yes Cher, Dionne and other main characters outfits are better but I just love the overall vibe of the school. In other films and tv shows nowadays, like euphoria all the extras are all wearing a grey hoodie. I also love that we see in the extras of the movie that Cher and Dionne influence the others fashion sense. And that we see how they are the center of attention with everyone wearing plaids like Cher and baby tees like Dionne sometimes wear.
God loves you and will never stop loving you. He loves us so much that he sent his only son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Jesus died and rose again 3 days later. If you believe that Jesus died and rose again 3 days later you shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16❤️❤️❤️💕
Dionne is the black girl representation I want every where else. She’s not lesser than compared to her white counterpart. I love her and Cher dress just as good as the other
Agreed. She’s also the best friend character trope I want to see in media. She has a personality that doesn’t revolve around the her friend and was treated like an equal rather than a yes man
I think Amber use to be like Tai. A shy girl who befriended Cher. Maybe the reason why she and Cher have a fall out is because Amber became more cruel and heartless. That’s why Amber sometimes copies Cher cause Cher use to help Amber with her style and maybe that’s why she wears a lot of outrageous outfits so she can have more attention than her former friend. ((Note that Amber is wearing similar colors to Tai in one of the opening montage. Amber’s hair in that montage look similar to Tai’s curly hair. Btw what do you think about this theory of mine comment down below))
I think that would make an excellent backstory to Amber! First time I watch Clueless I didn't think much about her, but your theory definitely makes her a more interesting character!
Oh my god, that's a great theory! That'd explain why they're friends in the opening montage. Tai would have ended up like her if she hadn't realised what's important for her and who she is!
@@TheNamelesssssssss aww thanks btw Dionne is always there with Cher but when Tai gets more attention Dionne almost became more distant to Cher. Maybe Dionne did that because she’s tired of Cher being so needy and a control freak. I have a theory that Dionne might be the first one to have a makeover by Cher when they first met and Dionne became a success. So that means Amber might be the first makeover that backfired.
damn when cher said “i dont get how guys dress”, she should time travel to 2022 and see almost every dude wearing a basic white hoodie with black or grey pants 💀
i actually really love cher’s outfit that was “the least coherent.” it’s actually one of, if not, my favorite outfits she has. idk maybe i don’t know much about fashion, but i love it.
this movie defined my entire aesthetic. Ever since I watched this movie, I have embraced my love for fashion and stereotypically girly interests that I used to be ashamed of bc of internalized misogyny. I love how this movie does not portray femininity as something bad, but as something beautiful, that can be enjoyed without shame. This movie made me accept my true self and I love it.
@@monochromatic_melodramatic exactly! girls can be powerful and beautiful no matter if they dress more feminine or more masculine. i don’t agree with the idea of trying to make girls dress girly again; girls can wear whatever we feel like wearing. there’s no better fashion style. you can make different styles and aesthetics work for yourself.
@@monochromatic_melodramatic this is what I was thinking from the moment I heard that line! And if girls needed to be feminine again, why can't we bring back very masculine (for 17th century) white tights, ruffles, poofy pastel shorts, wigs and heels for men? Still waiting for that kind of movie
How is Tai couture? I don't see it. Couture is extremely high-end, bespoke clothing with lots of hand finishing, typically made to order for private clients. Tai is probably the furthest from that possible. Curious to hear how you interpreted it though.
They do NOT need to make a remake of Clueless. Clueless is already a "remake" of Emma, and it does not need to be even more devoid of the source material. What they COULD do is make a sequel with the original actors (as much as they can, at least) and maybe explore Cher now all grown up? It just needs to be something much more original than a Clueless knockoff. Besides, when they re-did Heathers, they fucked it up. They completely lost the original context of the movie. Only Heathers the Musical was a good "remake," even though the storyline is a bit more different/motives are different. But it still managed to get the original context unlike the movie/show/whatever it was they made a couple of years ago. I don't want to see the same thing happen to Clueless.
I thought they could do a sequel that was a remake of pride and prejudice where after she graduates cher finds out her dad's estate is entailed like the bennet sisters' (or something like that) and she tries to find a job or someone rich to marry lol.
I also love how Tai has a tattoo on her arm. It doesn't show much but I think it symbolizes her past being so different than Cher & Dionne's upbringing.
When her dad says the dress looks like under wear it has nothing to do with Calvin Klein, it's because in 1995 the slip dress was a huge trend. A slip dress is under wear
Buuuutttt the dress IS Calvin Klein, and Calvin Klein one could argue is more known for their underwear than their fashion... idk how it was in the 90s tho
like i get that Amber's outfits are supposed to be "too much" and "garish and overbearing" , but I think they're iconic and would personally wear every single one of them.
Plus Mona did the costumes for Romy and Michelles high school reunion, the house bunny, and more! The bright dresses from romy and michelle are pure goodness
See I have a more complicated relationship with Amber because I was the girl who was really popular at one school and then we moved and I was made fun of for my outfits never being quite right. For 10 years I was the Amber even though I stopped trying to be like the more popular girls going into high school. They didn't let up until I left the graduation "lockdown" party and never saw them again. I admire her confidence but I see that there is a bunch of insecurity hiding behind false bravado, too. But she went big every day. She put herself out there and that's more than I can say.
@@rebeccagilpin3245 I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Being criticised constantly for a creative outlet such as fashion can be very disheartening. At least you’re free to dress as you please now, I hope? I can definitely see where you’re coming from with Amber. I was teased a lot for wearing clothes that were “different” too. Even now I feel “outrageous” isn’t the right word for Amber’s clothes. I used to be the girl who wore flower crowns over her purple pixie haircut, glitter eyeshadow like Ke$ha, black lipstick, and Dr Martens. My style inspiration was Helena Bonham Carter 😆 I think that sounds a little more outrageous than anything Amber wore haha, after all at least she was coordinated. I used to feel so jealous of girls who received compliments on their latest Adidas purchase. But then, they were spending an awful lot of money to look quite boring when I think back. I was only spending a little here and there to creatively express myself. I’ll bet I was having more fun than they were, in the long run. Even if they did take the piss out of every outfit I turned up in. That said, Cher and Dionne never looked boring, which gives Amber even more fuel to be jealous. The compliments they received were justified. I think the trouble is, society tells you to “be yourself”, but the second you’re TOO MUCH of “yourself”, you’re considered “extra” or “an attention whore”. And I hate that. Just let people live dammit!!
no because i straight up love some of her fits. the leazher pants w the white fur and ear muffs and the pe outift are so cute ! theres sm more i adore tbh
One thing I noticed for the first time while watching this: Cher dresses down at home, in a more relaxed manner that's similar to how Josh is dressed. Which is fitting - they'd look odd next to each other if Cher wore her school outfits next to him, but by having her clothes become more casual and relaxed - even some of the colours in her clothes match his - and it makes Cher and Josh look like a matched pair. Which is good, if you want to hint at and sell a romance that could develop. Brooklyn Nine Nine does something similar with Jake and Amy - the colours and patterns of their clothes meshed well next to each other, making them look cohesive and visually appealing, which helps to sell a relationship, beyond the chemistry or writing.
Girl I'm an economics student and I'm literally doing a project on one of modern gurlz video (heels stay up and up... Its about how the length of heels is correlated to the economy) Let's hope it goes well
@@MK-gm2mq I recommend you the yt Channel of Nicole Rudolph, if I am not mistaken she is a shoe Historian and did a video on that. It was very intreresting and she did a lot of research in my opinion.
I love what Alicia says about the movie, and how her interpretation was that the makeup and fashion and popularity were all a facade, and that we placed too much emphasis on the superficial things as teens. Cher felt relatable because I too thought if I had just the perfect outfit, and makeup, and lighting the boy would like me, or I would have the right friends, and my life would be great, when in reality none of those things mattered.
Cher and Dionne were classic timeless chic, but Amber was hella fashion forward. I don't mind the clashing patterns, she makes them WORK. I'd wear any of Amber's outfits today.
cher is my feminine style icon, especially in the spring semester. the softer pastels and fabrics with cute skirts and little fluffy accents, it’s just so soft and what i strive to be. i want to embrace femininity as confidently and unashamedly as cher
Don't worry. Take classes, you will have someone next to you. You will learn how to drive and it will be less scary, just like swimming and cycling. As for being a virgin, no worry. The right person does not care, and others should not care.
I saw an interview with Brittany Murphy where she was like "actually when I made Clueless *I* was a virgin who couldn't drive 😅" Homegirl really did deserve better.
Well, it's the only of her outfits that seems, how to put it... Let's say, if one of my groupmates from university wore something like that, it wouldn't seem childish or too flamboyant to me; I''ll probably compliment them on it.(Excluding Cher's more casual outfits, but in these cases she wasn't going for impression).
Contemporary costume design deserves way more respect than it gets. It's usually even harder to style modern looks than period pieces. The Oscars are garbage at awarding for wardrobe design. The whole thing about costuming is just for period pieces needs to stop.
No, contemporary costume design isn‘t at all harder then period costume design. They usually make huge mistakes in the movie industrie when designing period-costumes when it comes to historical accuracy. It is much more difficult to correctly portray a historical period than contemporary fashion. Everyone has an idea of how people dress today. It‘s takes far more effort to do the research for a distinctive time period of the past. In addition to that modern clothes are much simpler constructed then clothes was for most of the times in the past.
@@lischenmuller5711 It is hard to correctly and make the contemporary costuming look good. Knowing that so many people are caught up with today’s fashion, portraying it in film and shows is hard because you want approval from viewers. Like in the video many people don’t have much knowledge about historically accurate clothing which in ways makes it easier for them because viewers don’t really know wrong from right. Yes it’s hard for historical costume designers due to research but contemporary clothing is also quite difficult, because it’s overlooked most of the time saying that they have everything they need by looking at modern fashion. Contemporary costume deserves more praise instead of criticism because it’s truly very hard to nail contemporary costume on the head while getting peoples approval.
@@lischenmuller5711 In terms of research yeah, historical ones need more prep. But for appearances modern one's are harder to nail. A wrong modern look is much more glaring and obvious than a wrong historical dress. General public don't have much knowledge about historical accuracy so the wrong one's are not that obvious. Meanwhile contemporary and modern looks are more accessible and the public knows more about them so the wrong choices are easier to spot.
I know it’s not a movie, but I think a scream queens style analysis would be amazing! Especially because many of the outfits are over the top but still utilize contemporary fashion.
I think Amber hanging out with Cher is like popular kids hanging out even though they don't like each other. Like they probably have the same friend group or atleast a common one
I have a friend who was a kid during the 90's, so I guess he has an emotional attachment to that period. Because he is a full grown man with a career now, but he still dresses exactly like it's 1995. Not like a parody of 95, but it looks actually authentic. It's incredible and I don't even think he has to try to recreate the grunge look, he just never let go in the first place. He has the worn out plad shirts, everything in black, khaki, grey tones, back destroyed chucks, band shirts, long hair. Of course he still listenes to preferably to 90s music and has an e guitar collecting dust at home. He is like a time capsule
You’re describing most of my male friends, I’m 43. The 90’s male definitely has a hard time moving on. They all use iPhones & have careers, but the fashion and music is still what we listened to in high school.
The most stylish girls did wear knee high socks /thigh high socks and minis. I remember my older cousin getting into a fight with her mom because "young ladies didn't wear thigh highs to school." This was maybe in 1996?
As somebody who was young and fashionable when the movie came out it is a bit weird hearing it being analysed by later generations because it was really fashion-forward at the time and while it was not what 'everybody' was wearing, it sure represented what we were wearing to the clubs. The A-line mini skirts were all the rage as well as the short-sleeved empire waisted short dresses, knee-high flat/low heel boots and then in-came the over the knee high socks. At the time I really wanted to wear glitter eye-shadow but there were none in the stores so my girlfriend and I would put kid's glitter glue on our eyelids. The popularity of cardigans was also a sign of the cyclical nature of fashion with 50's style cardigan sets being extremely fashionable and practical. Overall the early 90's fashion was very masculine/unisex but the rise of the supermodel and movies like Clueless changed that and swung fashion to being more different for the sexes. Now we're having another parallel trend of unisex clothing through sportswear instead of grunge thanks to the pandemic.
I was in highschool when this movie came out and I wore knee highs with skirts but NEVER thigh highs. I don't think thigh highs would have passed dress code at school.
Yeah, those socks seem like a classic example of what the film did well - quoting various style trends of the time but turning it up to 11, in keeping with the director's vision? Knee-high socks was definitely a thing at school in the early 90s - so here they became thigh highs! (In fact at our school, only the "cool" kids were allowed to wear their long white cotton socks pulled up to the knee - it was like a whole status marker 🙄 Everyone else just wore them slouched down like bulky strange legwarmers... 😜)
As soon as I watched Clueless when I was like, 12, I was hooked on Dionne's look. She is SO effortlessly cool and stylish... the epitome of a scene-stealer.
"The only reasons we dont see here as Regina George type are because Alicia Silverstone is charming and Cher atoned for her mistakes." Uhm no. It is also because Cher or Emma actually means well and wants to help, despite her naivety and self-absorbedness.
Yup, Cher’s faults were more from naivety and being out of touch w the real world, while Regina was purposefully mean and manipulative. People like Cher because she’s a genuine person, even when she’s acting kinda mean
Exactly. Even in that Lucy clip, after she learns Lucy is Salvadoran, despite being angry, apologizes for her ignorant remark on her! It wasn’t an intentional racist jab, but frustrated ignorance she corrected
I agree!! Even before I saw the end of the movie where she "makes over her soul" I never saw her as a villain! I think she honestly loved and cares for her family and friends all along!
I love that even though Amber is copying others and trying to get attention by dressing more outlandish, her true individual style still shines through. Her true style is gaudy.
The pearls are another symbol tying Amber to her counterpart in Emma, who is obsessed with her pearls and flouts them as a sign of her social supremacy (but is a sign of her snobbery and her characteristic lack of class).
Looking back, I really like amber’s outfits. It does come off a bit tacky but I appreciate the dedication to a theme and pushing the look a level past “stylish”.
Yeah, like in this video, I really started liking almost all her outfits and would probably love to wear them slightly toned down.. she makes a good point of Amber "pushing it a bit far", but I admire the character's commitment to standing out even when she wants to 'follow' Cher
i feel like amber's outfits do have good style to them sometimes, but only out of context. Her outfits make her stick out like a sore thumb at school, as if she wasn't a teenager but someone modeling at a show. Maybe that's what she was going for though?
I feel like she's doing a bit of 1950s/60s camp ft. the 2000s, very Hairspray-esque! Emphasis on the camp part too, Amber would have killed it at the 2019 Met Gala
I like to think that Cher's iconic yellow-white-black outfit also kinda lends a hand to the "queen bee" that she is in the beginning. She literally is dressed in those colors.
I like her voice, how she narrates, the analysis, how she does research for her videos the whole package is sooooo fun I'd sign up for a podcast in a heart beat💗
I always loved Amber's outfits as someone who loves to be as different and crazy looking as possible lol not to be attention-grabbing, but because it makes me feel unique and like I'm expressing myself.
I’m so happy that you did a clueless style analysis, this movie have a smart way to show the personality of the characters thru their fashion. I didn’t even notice how much amber tries to copy Cher’s outfits.
Very intuitive breakdown. I like that the couple bits of red in Amber's gym outfit almost get lost - symbolic of the power she yearns for but doesn't really have
Kind of off topic but for the last couple of weeks I’ve been binge watching Lizzie McGuire. Would love to see what you think of the styles of that show. I think there’s a no better times capsule of early/late 2000’s style then that show.
I second the suggestion to analyze the outfits from Lizzie McGuire! I was and still am enamoured by the outfits! One of these days I swear that I'm going to get metallic silver pants like what she wore in the Aaron Carter episode!
Cher's blazers remind me a lot of the outfits in Heathers, because it seems like the characters in both movies are establishing themselves as high class, more fashionable and separate from their peers, like they want people to know they're in a different league; untouchable or people you should look up to.
meh, I don't like the implication that girls who don't dress femininley are undesireable and/or uncomfortable with their bodies. The whole makeover trend of the 90s was such a pain. Very nice analysis, tho. The clothes really do tell a story
I agree with you, but I don’t think they imply that Tai(who I’m guessing this comment is about) is “uncomfortable” in her body. Also, this is a staple in “ugly transformation” troupes so they couldn’t do that much for it😂
I'd give the devil wears Prada, Marie Antoinette, Memoirs of a Geisha an honourable mention, at least for American movies. French movie "8 women" wins the world competition.
I actually thought the "nautical" outfit was the nicest one Amber wore... like, the cap is a bit much and it'd look better if she had like, blonde or black hair but I still think it's cute... it stands out a lot because of the colour but at least the cut is nice and it isn't fluffy or stupidly over-accessorised
Even having recently gone to fashion school in the last few years, Clueless is still one of those films that gets brought up as a great example of storytelling and world building through contemporary costume design. There's a fashion illustration of Cher and Dionne's iconic suit outfits I used to love looking at in one of my textbooks. Also not sure if you haven't done this already, but an analysis on Uma Thurman's outfits as Poison Ivy in Batman Forever would be interesting! Or Lucy and Mina's designs in the 1992 Dracula.
Clueless has amazing fashion but I'm slightly rubbed the wrong way with how the film itself hates masculine/androgynous outfits. Even when Tai ditches the popular girl get up to be "herself", she still doesn't go back to her original style. I do get that being more confident can mean being comfortable showing more of your body and wearing more colours but in the end, it does feel like the film rejecting masculinity in women (which is made evident through the stylist criticizing grunge girls and Cher dissing the male modern fashion of that time). I get it's a relatively old movie so maybe it wasn't tropey then but it does fall into the "girls are androgynous because they're insecure" and never that's how they genuinely want to present themselves.
yeah i felt a little icky when the costume designer made that comment. even though tai gained her own sense of style in the end, i feel like realistically (i know it's a movie so it wont be as realistic) it would've been a more feminine grunge aesthetic. i still love the fashion for all the characters though
I agree but I think it also goes the other way with how femininity was/is seen as dumb and bimbo like, kinda in the same way legally blonde shows that you CAN be feminine and smart/mature at the same time, clueless does that too
I've always loved this movie, including the costuming. Although the outfits are WAY over the top. No one actually dressed that outrageously in real life, some aspects, yes, but not all & not all at one time.
Obvi, but that was kind of the point. They were trying to set trends. If you saw the behind the scenes special feature on the DVD, it would make more sense
Amber's clothes are the outfits I loved when I was in middle school. Not like an insult even if it's supposed to look immature, it just makes me feel nostalgic i guess lol.
I love the way you break down every outfit and how it relates to the character. I think the way wardrobe plays in movies is so important and it’s so interesting!
I actually love Amber's cartoonishly vintage style. It really reminds me of the costumes from The Fifth Element, which came out a few years later in 1997. The movie's costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, who rose to prominence in the late Eighties and early Nineties, and who also designed Madonna's famous "conical bra" corset. Amber's sailor outfit in particular really reminded me of the flight attendant costumes in The Fifth Element, but also was reminiscent of the French sailor references that Gaultier often incorporated into his ready-to-wear collections and perfume lines. Gaultier's style was part pantomime camp, part edgy, which I think described Amber's style too. She makes me think of the people who dress every day in vintage looks with their hair done in a rockabilly style, really committing themselves to the aesthetic. She's a lover of fashion history, especially the Fifties and the Eighties, but likes updating it with hints of what's happening today.
I missed this kind of style analysis videos by you 💛 it's so interesting for me, especially because I don't really have much knowledge about fashion and in particular fashion that relates to storytelling. I've actually learned a lot through your content. Really appreciate all the effort you put into it 💛
OMG… How did I not connect Amber and Mrs. Elton before??? The costuming is thus even more perfect since Mrs. Elton claims to hate finery and have a ‘horror of being overdressed’ but also seems to overdo it.
While I love the outfits in Clueless and find this video absolutely fantastic, I find a bit the comments of the costume designer of the movie, critisizing so much girls who choose to look more masculine, to dress more baggy and androgynous. I know it was a different period, but it was strange to me that someone could feel like that, almost like a girl who doesnt wear feminine hugging clothes is... well, not a girl. Ps : I dont mean to be rude to anyone, and I love this video. In fact I'm not english so expressing my ideas is a bit difficult for me
She did have a point. There was a lack of femininity in the looks, and you NEVER saw boys dressing in a feminine manner, like you can see somewhat today
I completely agree. I feel like a lot of people refuse to accept that androgyny has been a huge element in fashion, and not sticking to gender roles isn’t inherently bad (especially if it’s for the sake of art)
I was 10 years old when this movie came out. Understand...THIS MOVIE SINGLE HANDEDLY CHANGED FASHION FOR YOUNG WOMEN FOR THE REST OF THE DECADE. Every girl after this film wore knee stockings, cute jumper dresses, mini backpacks etc. I remember they made the Skipper doll wear an outfit like this. Absolutely goes down as an iconic film. My only wish is that as a bonus, you did a mention of their friend Summer. Her looks were always bright, cute and stood well along and against the other girls. Well done video. This channel is going to keep occupied.
I think what has made Emma and Cher likable- is they are innocent in their behavior. They are just Clueless. Emma is never purposefully cruel, with a funny sarcastic inner self, and of course a spoilt mindset- but is the darling of her family and neighborhood- with only Knightley calling her out. Similarly with Cher, she is rarely challenged and doesn’t see repercussions for her actions until the movie and so has room to grow
Dionne’s outfits were absolutely my favorite over Cher’s, for reasons you stated such as being more brave as she went for different looks. Perhaps what did it for me is the stuff she did with her hair, which always complimented her outfit and were so colorful, whereas Cher went so 💤 with hers. It added so much extra flair!
honestly i love ambers outfits. theyre outlandish, fun and reminiscient of what once was preppy. it almost makes her look like the frontwoman of an alternative band or something.
I love that when you say "is in the little details" when talking about her outfit, Tai said the same thing. I have memorized that scene really well lol.
even if the outfit at 47:39 is meant to look disoriented and non cohesive it’s honestly one of my favorites…. it’s so stinking cute. i’d wear it irl cohesive or not
This is maybe not what you do, but I’d love a look into the fashion of High School Musical, maybe considering the impact it had on an entire generation of children, possibly looking at how fashion trends influence children’s clothes. I think the style evolution of the characters is interesting, but also the way the films use clothes to age down their stories, to convey subtext that is censored, and also to conform to a family-friendly vibe. At this point, I think HSM has been very culturally important, and spawned many sequels, spin offs, and influenced shows like Glee. Love this video btw. Clueless is a true modern classic
It's wild to me how similar Cher's outfit after Tai gains power (green cardigan, white tee, green and white plaid skirt) is to Tai's outfit on her first day post-makeover (green cardigan, gray tee, green and black plaid skirt). It's a great representation of the role-reversal between Tai and Cher!
I also appreciate how Dionna and Cher's clothing provides friendship context. Their outfits support each other, but Dionne is NOT Cher's clone nor sycophant.
Agreed!

I one hundred-absolute- without second opinion obtrusively agree
dionne’s outfits were always on point. even when she was in the background she was DRESSING
Periodttt
She didn’t even feel like a side character, everything about her stands out but in a balanced way
Im super inspired by her outfits 👄💅
RIGHT! like when I was looking at the part where they said they wanted to make sure dionne's outfit didn't outshine cher's I thought 'I'm sorry but you failed'
tbh my eyes always looked to her in the shot, even more than they did cher. she is always on point
This movie was a cultural reset when it came to fashion
It really was.
Absolutely
Indeed, it was ahead of its time, while evoking 1995 fashions flawlessly!
What "WINX Fate Saga" could've been
This movie was a cultural reset when it came to EVERYTHING
clueless really nailed the representations without making it feel like the producers were just checking off boxes
i agree!! like... it's that easy and it should be that easy for everyone else to do it
Dang I just realized that Clueless, a movie that was made in the 90s, has way more representations and diversity than more recent movies in the past years.
Really great representation on many fronts.
this!! most of the times it feels just like that, you worded it so well, ‘checking off boxes’
I agree, and I think that's the thing that goes so wrong with Tai's makeover. She becomes the mean girl that Cher never was.
Couldn’t agree more!
Lol sorry but hated Cher. No thanks, fuck that Cher girl.
My sentiments exactly!
I found it interesting how she’s still very Black in her style but is also preppy. A lot of Preppy Black charters in 1990s / 2000s were totally white washed to dress exactly like their white counterparts. Dion still retained her Blackness
YESSS OMG
Lol
Cher is clueless but in a sweet and innocent way. Thats what makes her so likable. She means well but is ultimately so out of touch. That's why we all like her!
Exactly! Cher isn't a mean girl, not even at the beginning.

@@gracetaylorsversion3815 the most vivid image that springs up with this trope is from The Princess Diaries. It's so ridiculous that we were supposed to find Anne Hathaway "ugly". She looked cute with her curly hair.

@@TheNamelesssssssss aww thanks btw Dionne is always there with Cher but when Tai gets more attention Dionne almost became more distant to Cher. this movie defined my entire aesthetic. Amber: outlandish & tacky
Tai: grunge & couture
Dionne: hip & adventurous
Cher: feminine & polished

Contemporary costume design deserves way more respect than it gets. It's usually even harder to style modern looks than period pieces. The Oscars are garbage at awarding for wardrobe design. The whole thing about costuming is just for period pieces needs to stop.
Also bad at selecting animation, I just never watch them
No, contemporary costume design isn‘t at all harder then period costume design.
@@lischenmuller5711 lol

I wanted to wear thigh highs to school and my mom said the same thing but in like 2015
Yeah, those socks seem like a classic example of what the film did well - quoting various style trends of the time but turning it up to 11, in keeping with the director's vision? Knee-high socks was definitely a thing at school in the early 90s - so here they became thigh highs! (In fact at our school, only the "cool" kids were allowed to wear their long white cotton socks pulled up to the knee - it was like a whole status marker 🙄 Everyone else just wore them slouched down like bulky strange legwarmers... 😜)
As soon as I watched Clueless when I was like, 12, I was hooked on Dionne's look. She is SO effortlessly cool and stylish... the epitome of a scene-stealer.

The pearls are another symbol tying Amber to her counterpart in Emma, who is obsessed with her pearls and flouts them as a sign of her social supremacy (but is a sign of her snobbery and her characteristic lack of class).
The craft needs a style analysis imo. I love how different the girls’ style are despite all of them are technically within the goth/grunge look
omg yessss 🕸🕷🕸
Yeeessssss plz!
I would love this!
I agree 100%
I second this one!
Cher is iconic, but Dionne has always been my style queen in Clueless
Dionne's outfits are underrated, for sure.
she’s just so gorgeous, she could pull off a trash bag i swear
dionne’s style is iconic
I'm so jealous of her figure!
as a guy, i loved elton's and christian's outfits throughout the movie. i also liked some of murray's.
Same! Kind of bummed she didn't analyze and of the guys' outfits.
@@petalchildmaybe for a different video!!!
Eltons outfits out of the boys were by far my favorite! that style on a guy or even a girl is so attractive to me.
@@kittyelgato4246 I hope!!
@@petalchild that’s not really what this channel does tho
It’s literally called modern gurlz
"It's kind of like barbie, if she was a skater girl" I just loved that comment.
Why do we all consider tacky to be bad?? I like how "tacky" they are. Honestly they're not even all that tacky.
I feel like she's doing a bit of 1950s/60s camp ft. the 2000s, very Hairspray-esque! Emphasis on the camp part too, Amber would have killed it at the 2019 Met Gala
Clueless was the epitome of the preppy 90’s girl. And I love it
I love preppy things
it's 2021 and clueless (as well as the devil wears prada) still holds the BEST wardrobe in cinematic history
I approve this message
One of the best*
I really wish we could have seen more of Summer (the asian girl)
i've always thought that summer's style was super underrated!! i love all of her outfits so much
Yesss!!!
ive always loved her style and thought she was so pretty.
I think the actress who plays her is also in Bring It On. I love her in that movie too.
Yea me too.❤️
I like to think that Cher's iconic yellow-white-black outfit also kinda lends a hand to the "queen bee" that she is in the beginning. She literally is dressed in those colors.
I like her voice, how she narrates, the analysis, how she does research for her videos the whole package is sooooo fun
I'd sign up for a podcast in a heart beat💗
i love amber's outfits and how she tends to not fit the trend by just a bit and she just HAS to stand out
I always loved Amber's outfits as someone who loves to be as different and crazy looking as possible lol not to be attention-grabbing, but because it makes me feel unique and like I'm expressing myself.
yes! amber's looks were really creative/ artsy and remind me of harper from wizard's of waverly place
lol it’s funny how the narrator made it seem like it’s a bad thing to want to stand out. ambers outfits were kinda iconic tbh
Mona May is a Legend. That women deserves all the Oscars for costuming
I’m so happy that you did a clueless style analysis, this movie have a smart way to show the personality of the characters thru their fashion. I didn’t even notice how much amber tries to copy Cher’s outfits.
Cher's outfits are my all time favourite. Her style is a perfect combination of feminine, preppy and polished ❤️
Omg yesss they had the best outfits
Awwww lizze
Ok ok but Gilmore Girls was 2000s fashion at it's finest as well
Omg yes
I second the suggestion to analyze the outfits from Lizzie McGuire! I was and still am enamoured by the outfits! One of these days I swear that I'm going to get metallic silver pants like what she wore in the Aaron Carter episode!
“They wanted the outfit to be rememberable” id say the yellow suit is quiteeeeee well remembered haha. I think it worked
I gravitate towards Dione's style the most,I definitely have to find a way to incorporate some of her pieces!
Also Chers actress is lovely
Also, this is a staple in “ugly transformation” troupes so they couldn’t do that much for it😂
I think it is less about being desireable to anyone but themselves: highschoolers. Not sexually, but just as wanting to socially take her in.
That’s the whole point the movie was making with Tai. She ultimately rejects the makeover they give her and creates her own style in the end
It does look ugly tho
Y'all I think they're referring to the passage 16:10 :) & yes, that sort of annoyed me too
Can you do "13 going on 30" next??? Her party dress is sooooo ICONIC!!!
It's so ugly lol
@@nenee009 I think it's cute and ICONIC as hell.... Just my opinion
@@GyatiAnna it is iconic I'll give you that
@@nenee009 thank you😇
i’ve been waiting for this one omg
RIS??
So cool to see you’re a fan of this channel, Ris! :))
Clueless and breakfast at tiffanys are imo the definitive fashion films
In the spirit of Mona May, I would like to see Romy and Michele analyzed.
Yes, all the looks!!!
Yes, yes! I second this!
Omg, yes!
I get it's a relatively old movie so maybe it wasn't tropey then but it does fall into the "girls are androgynous because they're insecure" and never that's how they genuinely want to present themselves.
totally agree!!!!
I thought it was just me who felt like that
yeah i felt a little icky when the costume designer made that comment. even though tai gained her own sense of style in the end, i feel like realistically (i know it's a movie so it wont be as realistic) it would've been a more feminine grunge aesthetic. i still love the fashion for all the characters though
i concur!
Chileeeee you be surprised 😂😂😂 maybe not with the Plaid but The rest
Obvi, but that was kind of the point. They were trying to set trends. If you saw the behind the scenes special feature on the DVD, it would make more sense
Amber's military look was really good. She was mixing a lot of pattern and it still trends.
i really love how much mean girls definitely took inspiration from clueless. it’s so fun to see that the costuming decisions were really similar
Can we please STOP with the tacky reboots. If you're going to make sequels do it right for the love of god 😩😩
Or maybe not rebooting, like unless they have a great team and good writer and a good modernisation, maybe no
Even better: think of something new and fun but people can look back on.
Agreed!!!
Amber's clothes are the outfits I loved when I was in middle school. Not like an insult even if it's supposed to look immature, it just makes me feel nostalgic i guess lol.
"Modern costume design doesn't require any skill"
Me: "EWWWW AS IF!"
Really appreciate all the effort you put into it 💛
Agreed!
In fact I'm not english so expressing my ideas is a bit difficult for me
Honestly I thought it was just me. Those comments just rubbed me off the wrong way
A mi también me incomodaron, son estereotipos
Right! Mega shitty!
"Ugh! As If?!" Will always be iconic
My favourite outfit of the entire movie is Dionne’s red dress with collared shirt underneath. The sharp collar and those floaty cuffs! It’s perfect!
honestly i love ambers outfits. theyre outlandish, fun and reminiscient of what once was preppy. it almost makes her look like the frontwoman of an alternative band or something.
I would love that as well.
I would love to see a fashion analysis on Pretty Woman, Gossip Girl, or 13 Going on 30
Especially Gossip Girl
Dionne’s outfits were always my favorite!!
Omg!
