  • Don't get me wrong I actually really love new vegas's writing. This is obviously a joke more than anything because unlike certain other fallout games you can understand character motivations. I'm just saying, sometimes it can go a bit too far tho, cough cough Ulysses.

I like to think Caesar just _really badly_ wanted someone to finally ask him why he made a legion based on Ancient Rome, considering it’s doubtful any of his legionaries or slaves would be brave enough to risk looking like they’re questioning him

The fun thing about the whole Hegelian Dialectics speech is Caesar doesn't really have a complete picture of how Rome worked, and doesn't fully understand the concept he's talking about. And it makes sense, for a few reasons:
    1. Caesar's not as smart as he thinks he is.
    2. Odds are low any kind of prewar comprehensive history of Rome would have survived destruction compared to a more general history of the world that includes a section on Rome.
    3. Caesar's brain tumor could be affecting his memory and critical thinking, making him forget if he originally intended the Legion to have a greater purpose than whatever synthesis he thinks would come from conquering NCR.

I actually like Ulysses' dialogue a lot, thank you very much (responding to the description of this video). The fact that he speaks exclusively through extended metaphor gives him this strange otherworldly presence in a game where most characters just directly state their thoughts and opinions. Some of his lines make it unclear whether he's addressing the player character, or the player, and I kind of like the idea that he's the protagonist from a different game we never got to play coming here to fuck with us over a disagreement in playstyle. Maybe that's just me being weird though 🤷‍♂️

I think the biggest issue is that if Lonesome Road was a standalone it would be appreciated way more. After a player hits the level requirement and start it, they're generally already embroiled in the shooty bits of the game and walls of exposition aren't really top of mind. If it was standalone with no level cap and a fresh experience it would be more greatly appreciated for the experience it provides instead of "oh sweet, MREs"

    • @slammydunk9787
      @slammydunk9787 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

My theory that Ulysses address player. Not just any player but a player that actually played old fallouts and walk the roads of the west and wield the power to save or destroy communities there, so its kinda like tribute to us. OR its another meta criticism of players who complete quests without thought of consequences just for the sake of completing the quest (just like Elijah criticized pip boy).
Maybe its both, but I kinda believe its a former. All these places that Ulysses talks about its obviously intended to provoke emotions from players and in my case it worked. I’m like “Ahhh yeah I see what you tried to do Chris Avelone, I appreciate it”. Ulysses and Lonesome Road wasn’t for Fallout New Vegas players, it was for F1 and F2 players.

Ashur and the Pitt raiders managed to do the necessary evil raider faction concept better than ceaser and the legion in a 4 hour DLC quest.
I get vegas had a short dev cycle and didn't add a lot of planned content but the legion got particularly shafted by not showing a civilian side so we'd have more than just Ceasers ramblings and that one merchants single line about how its much safer and more orderly. Show do tell applies very much to the video game format.
We saw the NCRs coruption and over stretched supply lines. We see how house runs the strip but we never actually see the legion outside its army and thus they are by far the weakest of the 3 main factions from a story telling angle.

    • @Tattle-by-Tale

We know how easy it is to create with the gamebryo/creation engine. A blind baby could churn out mods with it, it takes no time to learn at all.
So Obsidian had that going for them.
Plus 99% of all the game assets were already created by Bethesda, so they didn't have to worry about that either.
Also much of the story and factions were already written, thanks to the development of the cancelled original Fallout 3.
Once you dig a little into the development of New Vegas, you start to wonder why they didn't get more done.
According to Chris Avellone, a stupid amount of dev time was apparently put towards developing.... Caravan.
