The depiction of Geidi Prime was a monumental triumph of cinematography. The greyscale was otherworldly, spooky and alien, saved massively on set design costs, and adeptly sent the message that Harkonnen culture is rigidly black and white
A tribute to Jodowskys dune
Cool, so why don't Jessica and Paul look like that
@@ArrakisHeir88 I know it's something that Villeneuve added but Harkonnens only look like that when out in the strange sunlight of Giedi Prime. Once they are indoors they look more normal (other than the shaving their hair and eyebrows which is also a Villeneuve thing). And characters like Beast Rabban who have been on Arrakis for a while in the second film have a slightly more tanned complexion in the second film compared to in the first film.
I personally don't like this depiction of what the Harkkones look like. In the book they are described as grotesque looking and nasty. Here they seem way to clean

🤣🤣🤣
Damn you I was typing the same observation when I saw your post.
She and chalamet sound like they’re doing a play in high school. I haven’t seen an honest review on this film. Only one who did was razor fist on the first one. Everyone else is a shill from the sound of it.
@@strtupg people are entranced by the beautiful cinematography
yes, “woman” 🤣
I liked it. But honestly, it's terribly dumbed down. And Im so tired of Zendaya sulking constantly. She is vastly over rated.
it's so badly written imo, Paul's character growth was rushed, it only took like 2 scenes for him to change everything he stood for, and i don't know what's the point of Zendaya in all of this, she literally added nothing to do the show, I thought she was gonna be the reason Paul would not succomb to the prophesy lies, or at least be his wife, yet he did at the end and got with the other chick, also that pyscho is easily the worst villain i've ever seen, they've been building his character as a top warrior and just took an L to Paul because Zendaya was there to support him with LOVE i guess... and the effing Harkonnen guy is supposed to be a master, he died like a dog for no reason. which means that whole thing about him being his grandson was all for ntg cuz the mf is dead and the plot obviously will go towards the big battle between Fremen and those big families or whatever.. You can't just make a 3 hour movie building up to another movie
The kid's there, because that's what Hollywood wants. Nothing to do with the audience or critics rating her.
Imagine her face when Paul is walking around with two wives in the sequel. I just cant see her doing the next movie
@@slippytrippy8122 That part will be wokeified. Obviously.
@@jurycould4275 I think theyll change it and Chani will be like, in self exile raising a small group of freemen who oppose Paul. Theres no way Zendaya will go along with the two wives thing. What do you think
Only 190 mill??? Bro, some garbage movies have higher budgets. Good management there.
Yeah, like the previous MCU movies and tv shows. Not to mention ROP that has millions per episode, but still sucked.
@@abelingaw5070RoP doesn't exist, it was never made and shall never be mentioned... Feck!
Zendaya's only expression the whole movie was a "girlfriend-mad-at-you-about-something" face.
An accurate portrayal of what a girlfriend normally looks like.
Not easy for someone born male to pull off.
@@andycamp4890 real girlfriends don't look like that. they have much more versatile expressions than Zendaya in the movie.
The was a very funny jealousy mechanic in Dune2 between the love (Chani) and the Mother (Jessica) competing for Paul. This was true hate & rivalry under the guise of fighting for their idealogies (Fremen patriotism vs. Bene Gesserit power/religion).
Zendaya is cringe 😒
LMAO. This comment had me weeping with laughter. Thank you !
Zendaya is extremely overrated.
By who? I'm not sure anyone actually rates her...nevermind overrating her! 😂
She's a fad imo.
saying that Zendaya is overrated is overrated, nice try tho
BASED! Really hated her ever since Spider-man homecoming.
I doubt that softcore p tennis movie she's in will do well at the box office either.
2049 didn't suck
It looked great, but the story sucked! The typical Denis film. All his films look amazing, but suck when it comes to characters and story. No emotional connections, very scientific. All his films have a low re-watch score.
It did.
@@rickdeckardbladerunner2049 To each their own, but I find 2049 to be one of the most rewatchable films out there. It's just very satisfying and moody, a good choice for a film for a crappy rainy saturday night
@@rickdeckardbladerunner2049that seems to be your problem rather than the movie's. I sailed through that movie in no time.
I loved 2049
The visuals in this movie are so natural you don't even think your looking at cgi but rather something alien that was photographed on camera and that's how cgi should look in live action and not like a cartoon.
*sighs* what are you talking about. Have you seen actual practical effects works like Mad Max Fury Road or Top Gun Maverick? My eyes glazed over half the time coz it's just so CGI
@tarutso sighs. What are you talking about? I'm talking about cgi, NOT practical effects. I know practical is always best, but when cgi is done right, it looks just as good.
@@handsomeDRAC I donno what u talking about. The CGI looks CGI. The bits that aren’t CGI look great like those floating dudes near the beginning. Now if those are CGI then I agree w u lol
@@tarutso yes
You do realise that the majority of sets, clothing, VFX, supporting characters are all CGI right? Like the actors are literally in a small room surrounded by large green walls majority of the time. The best example I can give is the New York set in Avengers, that entire city was CGI and only enhances the scenes.@@tarutso
Zendaya plays Zendaya just like Michelle Rodriguez always plays Michelle Rodriguez.
Most actors play the same type of character in everything. Thats why actors like Leo or Denzel are such legends.
Just like Ryan Ren
@@jackpackage4278 But these sort of actors belong in B and C grade fluff movies not something like Dune. I’ve seen Zendaya in Euphoria and Spiderman and she’s just not convincing in her roles.
Brie always plays Brie
You could say that about most famous actors, like dwayne johnson or vin diesel
You have to respect Austin Butler for having the balls to take up Sting's codpiece as Feyd-Rautha.
Figuratively and literally
I love how he altered his voice to resemble Stellans as if it were an accent related to his family line. He’s a good actor.
He took balls deep literal hahahahaha
I love that..... Outstanding
He was the only decent aspect of the film.
Big things missing from the books: Paul and Chani lose a child to an assassination attempt by one of the Houses/noble families. Paul's three year old sister is considered as an abomination - as is Paul. The movies completely did away with the 'weirding way' too. However, none of these mattered as much as the wooden acting from Zendaya :(.
And they rid everything relating to mentats, people who were engineered/trained to be human supercomputers. Dude to the imperial law banning machines made in the image of man. Presumably due to near apocalyptic consequences in the past. To me it seems like producers were scared to take a stab at AI which are at the center of many multi billion dollar industries today.
Paul being an abomination is in the movie the reverend mother calls him an abomination at the end of the movie after he uses the voice on her she says it kind of quietly but she audibly calls him “abomination”
@@cha0tix46 I think that was a nod to Alia, and also the fact that he's a male using the Voice, something only women are taught.
I have to agree on these points. The weirding way missing was a disappointment but it also made the 80’s film a cheese fest.
Zendaya was fine in this film, didn't think her acting was bad at all. This is coming from someone who isn't even a fan of Zendaya just giving credit to a decent performance.
The Chani character had way too much screen time compared to the emperor and Feyd
I think the sound design in this movie is among the best I've heard in a long time. Truly a movie that needs to be experienced in theaters.
yep sound indeed i agree
Watch zone of interest then tell me that but this movie is 2nd best
But Hans Zimmer is a dirty socialist. How can you like his vision?
I brought high definition earplugs and im so glad i did. Without them in I would have had hearing loss. I loved how it sounded but don’t get why it has to be so loud.
Yeah I’m going back for a second viewing
A great movie treated like a masterpiece because people are so beaten down by garbage.
Also there is no woke agenda in it or lgbt trash which makes it good
that about sums it up
I honestly think it could be the greatest film ever made. I don’t say that lightly.
The water discipline and the still suits are appalling as a lover of the book I have no intention of seeing this because it would grate. I also have to say Gary's summation was atrocious 🙂
When Jurassic Park came out, it was considered just a great movie. What's the difference between it and a 'great' movie coming out today? 30 years of nostalgia.
Hollywood, quite trying to make Zendaya a thing. She not a good enough actress.
and quit trying to force dune and other waste of space boring movies
Trying to make her a thing? As if she is an upcoming actress. Lol. Keep deceiving yourself. Zendaya is already a megastar actress. She was the highest paid actress in Hollywood two years ago, she has been in several top franchises and she is super popular all around the globe. So yeah, she is already a big deal.
@@patrick7142 true, but this is a boomer and older channel
@@patrick7142 Nope she is not a thing and never will be. There are plenty of C-Tier actresses that make millions. Second, she is just a DEI hire as well.
@@drinkwater9891It's not boring and no ones forcing it on you. You just have bunk taste.
I’m not a fan of Zendaya. She’s just not a great actress. Serviceable, yes. Decent, maybe. But not great. When I told my brother she was cast as Chani he replied by saying “I don’t know what a Zendaya is.” Pretty much sums it up right there.
Not a false prophesy, but it wasnt supposed to be Paul that was to fulfill it. The breeding program the witches had in place was thrown off when Jessica had a boy to please duke leto.
Don’t see how their “breeding program” would work though, they wanted to mix all the peoples bloodlines so humanity wouldn’t stagnate but the final would be harkonen (Rebecca), atreides (Paul but a girl), harkonen (fade)again making a significantly inbred child to be the kwizats haderac.
@@scott8448Thats because the gene sequences and gene lines mix, not two people, not even two people who are having sex. You are not a direct copy of your mom and dad genes, half - half like. Bene Gesserit dont bread people together, they wave gene lines, on a much finer scale.
Who is Rebecca? :D XD
...
Jessica is only half Harkonen but she is also not a copy of somebody. That also means Paul is quarter Harkonen. At best. Not completely, like movie overacts it.
it is a false prophesy, it was planted there...the fact that Paul had a penis means nothing, the prophesy was just meant as a means of control

No one cares for the opinion of someone who’s a fan of that trash 80s movie 😂 couldn’t even get past the first 10 minutes, like god what a 💩 movie
Didn’t completely hate Chani, but it’s just weird that she would rather her people stay oppressed, instead of rallying behind the one person who brought all her people together. Like all she does is cry about the prophecy but doesn’t offer any solutions.
😮 I didn't think that way until you mentioned it lol. Yes wtf Chani not happy his people overthrow the oppressors.
Paul isn't supposed to be the hero. She can see this.
@@Swindel67 yea I understand that even Denis spelled it out, my issue is sure “Paul isn’t suppose to be the hero”, but what’s Chani solution other than complaining? He did in 6 months what the fremen couldn’t in 80 years, and united them. Plus the golden path completely disproves the Paul isn’t the hero no matter how much they try to argue it. All of humanity > 61 billion.
Zendaya was the worst part of this movie imo. Such a wooden performance. She didn’t really have chemistry with Paul and she seems to always be against him. I don’t really know why they were together. Didn’t seem like a natural relationship
The way she would obviously stare him down in front of his masses was so stupid lol his people would ostracized her for doing that
Fun Fact: When Jodorowsky assayed to mount a production of Dune in the mid 70's, he had hired H.R. Giger to design the Harkonnen and their home world.
Appropriately.
Another fun fact is that some of Giger's designs for Dune got recycled in Prometheus, or as it's known in my house ''the film that shall not be named'' or ''the P-word film'' . The wife is a big Alien fan and hates it.
@@knightsofrreee7961She's right.
Been meaning to watch that documentary. Would love to have seen his vision realized.
@@knightsofrreee7961 haha, I can definitely understand that.
The battle scenes are probably the biggest letdown for me -- They're always swift and one-sided.
That's a very good point. They are very one sided indeed. The fall of House Atreides in Arakeen and the battle vs. the emperor are very much that way in the books. But it would have been nice had they been more substantial. I think these films were already going to run long, and there's a big emphasis on efficient storytelling.
They made Chani either too stupid to understand what was going on, or too much of a narcissi to care.
Zendaya just plays Zendaya in every movie. Like a Cara Delevingne that seems to blandly fail upward
They also made her character have way more to it than it should have.
Zendaya is like The Rock, Ryan Reynolds or Keanu Reeves, but with 0% charm or screen presence.
I still can't figure out why is she as popular as she is. She has neither the talent nor the charisma to compensate the lack of range like the actors i mentioned.
another plank of wood, like Kira knightly, ok to look at but don’t expect anything above phoning it in.

Your description of Zendaya’s acting is spot on! 😂 I described it as Los Angelos but Californian is close enough
The only complain I have for this movie is that we didn't get more Feyd-Rautha scenes. I really love how Villeneuve portrayed Feyd in his films. He really showed why Feyd was Paul's greatest rival in the movie. This version of Feyd is more powerful because he actually is a very capable warrior unlike the book and previous adaptation versions who likes to use trickery to win his fights. Austin Butler's version of Feyd also has none of the reckless and impulsive nature of the book version. He never tried to assasinate his uncle like the book version.
He did say, "I should". Surely, time was an issue.
No, Austin's Feyd was impulsive too. He casually slit that one advisor's throat so his cannibal girl "darlings" would have a snack on the trip.
I havent recognized any of the characters in the movie
I think when people compare it to LOTR they're not saying it's as good as them, I think the comparison is that they're 2 grand franchises, with well developed world's and characters, that will stand the test of time.
More than 20 years later, the fact that it is still so hard to top LOTR is crazy
Exactly. I think this Dune trilogy will be what LOTR is for fantasy movies, but for sci-fi.
Genre is def different. But what Paul Jackson accomplished is really unreachable ... Dune 2 is wonderful - but the depth of the LOTR is wider and the rhythm and pace is much better than Dune 1.
@@palahnuk1 Yeah absolutely. No question. I just think Dune has the ability to garner a fan base as dedicated as LOTR that will love it forever 😊
meh
Butler really is becoming a mega star, hope he continues to absolutely kill it.
Couldn't care less about Florence "iPhone face" Pugh or Zendaya.
I quite like Florence Pugh. She's been in some bunk, but she's been in some decent stuff too. Zendaya I struggle to understand what the deal is, but I can at least point to a few of Pugh's performances and say 'she's a competent actor who has potential to be better'.
Informed beauties both. (We're told it's so, in the face of the evidence of our own eyes)
Yeah hiring Zendaya for acting is like Nicholas Cage minus the talent. She was the only thing about the first movie I didn't like. It's like oh look it's Zendaya, pulls you out of it.
Zendaya's pretty. But, I don't think she's sexy. No curves. She looks like puberty skipped her. I don't think Pugh rates any higher than a 5 or 6 either. I wouldn't call her ugly. But, I wouldn't call her hot. She's a "Plain Jane".
@@PalaecroExactly. Never liked her in that movie. She ruined what to me was nearly great movie experience. She belongs in some low tier Netflix material not a high quality literary sci fi epic like Dune.
Just saw it today on IMAX. Let me say, every time something big is happening on screen, I can feel my body and the chair I'm sitting on shake, literally shake. The sound design is stellar. And The scene on Geidi prime was GENIUS
Unfortunately, Chani's character was butchered. Where in the book she is a woman that provides support for Paul, here she is just a spoiled brat. I presume that is why they left out the fact they had a son that was killed.
Well they completely changed zendayas character from the book. In the book she supports paul & sticks by his side during his messiah phase . In the movie they made it the opposite
Gotta have their girl boss scene nonsense or else the FemiNutzees will scream like Harpies about the Patriarchy and always being oppressed.
@@clit_niblr0375
Agreed. Thats why also they swapped Liet Kynes to a female character. They even admitted it.
I think they Will make her the new Korba in the next movie.
Yep that's the only problem I have with it but I guess they wanted a strong female that was independent and shit on the character instead
Fem power
Finally criticism of Zendaya
She has about as much range as a lead balloon does distance traveled
The problem of her character is they gave her so much like a girlboss, they didn't take the real tragedies of chani in the books
@@sedlyholmes3722 Because I've watched the series, I can understand why Zendaya act like a girl boss in Denis Villeneuve version. Paul was talking a lot about his dream to Chani, that's why only she knew what will happen in the future. Of course Lady Jessica knew as well and the Bene Gesserit.
Geez its like now the thing "cool kids" do as far as slamming her, she is far better than dozens of actresses no one ever hammers on. She is not a great actress but again there are far worse.
Her best work is in Euphoria. She really does make you hate her, the way you would hate a drug addict that ruins their family and friendships in real life. She gives you enough hope that she can turn it around, only to realize what a deluded fool you are, and that she is conning you again. The real criticism of the show is the oversexualization of the other high school aged characters.
The ending he's referring to is a cringy girl boss scene that was thrown in at the last moment for no apparent reason, in an almost "F U, we got the last word in", way.
Javier Bardem and Austin Butler absolutely crushed it. TC also definitely lived up to the lead role, and he will be excellent in the next
So this is what willy wonka was doing while his factory was shut down.
*Breaking News :* Due to a sudden decrease in sales, Willy Wonka shuts his factory down and switches to a more aggressive tactic.
Getting high on spice melange... understandable how he got the "wonka"
I agree, zendaya isn't a versatile actress. If anything, its as if she's not acting but just being herself in all the movies she's in
They need to stop casting the same people. Enough Zendaya already.
What's a zendaya?
You do realize her casting is at least dating back to 2019 right?
IMO, everything was great except for Zendaya, because Zendaya is an activist pretending to be an actress in a good movie.
can you give an example of her giving a bad performance in this movie? she wasn’t the greatest actress, but she didn’t take me out of the movie at all, and was always believable as Chani 🤷🏻♂️
Zendaya is spidermans gf and the atreides guy looks pretty handsome but being so WHITE he will do as well in the desert as black people dieting in front of fried chicken,
So you're gonna hate on any performances by Zendaya because she's an activist??? Sounds like you're just hating cause she's a woke female. Timothee is a woke male, but you don't seem bothered by his acting considering he dresses feminine on the red carpet and is clearly supportive of the LGBTQ people
She is not remotely as bad as some make her out to be, it has become the "cool kids" thing to hammer on her. I have not seen a single activist thing she has supposedly said.
@@deanfirnatine7814she's overrated
Zendaya was a poor casting choice for Chani. Otherwise, looks promising!
I liked Barbora Kodetova as Chani in the 2000 miniseries
The choice they made to swap the arcs of Chani and Jessica is very weird.
Jessica is supposed to be reluctant and Chani the supportive one.
Paul and Chani are suppose to have two children together so if they make a sequel they'll have to resolve this plot point that doens't exist in he book.
They made some very strange choices. I understand why they cut out the mentats from the second movie but why did they introduced them in the first one then ? And why did they cut out completely the Guild ? So that the Landsraad can bring their warships without opposition in the end ?
Some part are overly long, and some seem rushed, seemingly at random. I suppose for the sake of making beautiful shots ?
This movie stutters. Or is desperately in need of an extended cut (which is ironic for a 3 hours long movie).
The movie is not worth a second view because of what you said and tons more. Its an abomination with pretty visuals that is fooling all the movie theater starved sheeple.

@@vqaoutrz2609 You missed the point entirely.
@@rickdeckardbladerunner2049 Such an abortion of an opinion
I suspect Villeneuve wants to create some conflict between Chani and Paul to resolve in a third movie...Dune Messiah. Of course, this movie will have to succeed bigtime to ensure another sequel, but I think it's a good bet that it will. All [well, some anyway] of the dangling plot threads will have been reserved to beef up the plot and action of Messiah.
why does the Sci Fi Dune show in the year 2000 get no reference!!!!! REVIEW IT SIR!
There's a director's cut of that miniseries as well, that's even better than the standard cut. Also the Spicediver cut of the Lynch films that he mentioned is far superior to the theatrical cut. I LOVE the Children of Dune Sci-Fi channel miniseries. It's my favorite.
I've read the book. These movies are good (at least, from what I can see from Part 2's trailer and info), bordering on great, but they miss on a few points from the books.
Part of the point of Jessica giving birth while with the Fremen was because her daughter, Alia, is a key figure in the final act of the book and in future books. Because of the psychic and drug-fueled trial Jessica has to go through to become a Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit, Alia also gains heightened awareness and consciousness _while inside the womb._ Alia is basically born with the wisdom and intelligence and powers of a Reverend Mother but without any of the disciplines or loyalties (in the book, she's the one who kills the Baron because he underestimates her, since she's 2 years old, and lets her get close enough to stab him with a gom jabbar needle she'd been hiding).
In part one, the biggest disappointment was the gender-swap and race-swap of Liet Kynes. In the book, Liet Kynes is a male Imperial Ecologist who was chosen by the Emperor personally to learn about Arrakis and the Fremen. Long story short, Kynes goes full Dances with Wolves and gets adopted into the Fremen, even starting a family (Chani is his daughter, making her half-Imperial in the books). He's later so impressed by the honor and integrity of Duke Leto Atreides, partially thanks to the values he gained by spending so much time with the Fremen, that he actually betrays the Emperor and helps the Atreides royal family (most of them) escape. As an Imperial, and as the Imperial Ecologist and Emperor's contact, he's not killed by the Harkonnen. However, after he's captured he's left in the desert with a ruined stillsuit as punishment for his betrayal so they can say they "never killed" the Imperial Ecologist.
Kynes' life in the book has beautiful poetic symmetry: he starts out as an Imperial agent to be used to exploit the Fremen, but instead he learns their ways to survive the desert and becomes a man of greater integrity as he falls in love with the Fremen and Arrakis. Later, he sides with Leto against the Emperor, showcasing the Emperor's fears of Leto having the potential to gain enough influence to usurp him (if Leto could convince his _chosen man_ on the planet, an Imperial man, he could convince anyone to come to his side). Then, Kynes sacrifices himself to do what is right, and the people he started out serving in the first place leave him to die in the desert he was sent to study as an insult to him, but in actuality he's at peace with it since he'd long since come to love the place and now gets to be one with it.
They removed nearly all that poetry for a cheap girl-boss moment, and it will never not annoy me.
When you put it like that I can’t help but feel the same frustration you feel!
That's a very good point. Kynes was one of my favorite side characters in the first book.
This is such an excellent comment. You're spot on. I'm super curious if you've seen Dune Part 2 yet, and would love to hear your take(s) on the changes that are made to Chani and others.
I don't mind Zendaya as much as I mind the utter character assassination of Chani.
Isn’t that the truth?
In the book she's a wise Fremen woman. The whole "southern fremen are the religious ones" is completely a movie thing. In the movie she acts like a snooty teenanger. The worst is the ending. She very much supports Pauls marriage to princess Irulan in the book, but in the movie she just storms off and rides a worm while crying.
The character assassination of Chani... And Jessica... And Stilgar. And the Thufir storyline, which made an idiot out of the baron...
@@petrowegynyolc7108 Stilgar wasn't that bad.. I kind preferred some of his ways.. He was a bit blind fanatic in some bits.. But his pure belief through the actor's portrayal of the character made him very much intriqueing.
@@mrdrebin123 he was played for the laughter and throughly humiliated by Chani and her "modern, woken company who are not constrained by the religious beliefs of the South"... Both book and Part1 Stilgar would immediately have had put her into her place, instead of suffering the insults.
No idea how Zendaya gets such big roles and is pushed so hard front and center. She either looks like a bum & acts like she doesn’t want to be on set or has 1 or 2 facial expressions. That’s it.
I think this is super important her role is a 180 from the original movie so I hoped she would be a good actress (she wasnt)
I've heard it had more to do with casting couch auditions than any acting talent.
And from EVERYTHING I've seen her in so far, that tracks.
I thought she did a fantastic job acting with her eyes. Looking paul up and down and watching him carefully, to looking him up and down and looking at him with lust/love to being betrayed and angry with him. Ya'll just dumb.
I thought she did fine loved every moment of the movie. Guess people will always find something to 💩 on
I loved everything about the movie, except zendaya. I have no idea why they chose her to play Chani, she just does not fit the role
Denis Villeneuve is already working on a third Dune movie, which is about adapting the novel Dune Messiah. It should come out around 2027. Warner is obviously creating a big blockbuster Sci-Fi franchise of it's own with Dune, and if the movies keeps getting better, then they are sitting on a pot of gold.
Dune Messiah was a failure of a book compared to Dune the original book. It is the deconstruction of Paul the hero and very political and boring. Very little action. So, if you're into tragedy films, this will take the cake. If this is Dune part 3 I will pass. With Chani riding off at the end, it sure looks like it is setting up for that. She sole his thunder and for that, I will never watch part 2 again. We men don't like this trend in films. Sorry girly men and manly women.

UFFFFFF the Zendaya california quote articulated perfectly the only gripe I had with the movie.
Dune was slightly 'lucky' in this way- Herbert's original books had women being just as strong as men in their own way (the Bene Gesserit, female Fremen warriors). Because he wrote it with some gender balance in it, there was less 'need' to insert intersectional ideas.
You CAN see some of Villeneuve's nods to more current sensibilities:
1) making female characters have more agency/ability (the new Jessica kills with her hands, Dune '84 she didn't)
2) Changes like Dr Kines' race/gender make little difference to the plot because it doesn't become the focus, or even get a mention (you wouldn't know the character has been gender swapped if you hadn't read the book or seen Dune '84)

@vanripem not really since one is fake and the other is real.
@@nicknevco215No they got there way before the Harkonnens got there. The Zensunni wanderings had them end up on Arrakis
I think it is interesting how David Lynch visualized Giedi Prime as Planet of the Gingers, while Denis V. portrays it as Planet of the Skinheads. It works either way, but in Denis' version the Harkonnes' psychosis is more subtle and brooding. Lynch's version was more entertaining, while Denis' version is more frightening. I now view the Lynch DUNE as how the story would look if performed as live theater.

I had also tried many times to read the books and never could get into them. I could never get the appropriate "theater of the mind" experience going having not even seen the older movie. But now having seen both new movies, I gave the Audible version another go and it makes a WORLD of difference being able to picture it now.

Zendaya ACES every assignment directors give her. Jon Watts, director of the Tom Holland SPIDER MAN trilogy asked her early on to play MJ like Darla from BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD! People ignorant of the assignment tried to "pan" her for her "monotone." But that was the assignment she was given. I hope she gets to play the lead in hilarious Rom Com's, and the lead as a high-powered attorney/politician, and the lead as a scientist, teacher, astronaut, etc. She'd be wonderful in a great biopic - maybe of a singer, too. We cannot easily compare the worlds Herbert and Tolkien created. They are totally different flavours.. read the books first ( or at least one of the series) then you might be able to analyze, compare aso. Plus keep in mind: LOTR fantasy / Dune sci-fi. I’m too lazy to go on but maybe you can catch my point here.
😊 I’m a big fan of Dune, read the books & I also love LOTR movie trilogy.
To be fair - the pacing matches that of the book pretty closely - the ending wraps up really quickly in the book. Also, the book does end with Chani and Jessica - so makes sense that the film matches that too.
Yes, exactly! The final battle in the book is even faster than in the new movie.
But you don't feel it when reading the book, because it's printed words that you can pace yourself. When put in movie form, the jumps become very obvious.
In fact Denis Villeneuve have already put additional explanatory scenes in the movie to explain the final battle. These scenes were not in the book.
Zendaya was very much the weak link of the cast. I noticed in the first movie that all the other Fremen had an accent but her; in this one they even explicitly mention Fremen accents (Stilgar had a southern Fremen accent) while Chani was there, ignoring her Californian accent. You are being paid to be a professional actress, I'd think that a professional actress ought to be able to handle an accent.
You are right about Javier Barden as Stilgar stealing the show. He completely makes the Fremen for me. I'd add that I loved what they did with Josh Brolins Gurney so much that I wish they had introduced him way sooner. In 1984 Dune he went native just like Paul and Lady Jessica and was a pretty generic honorable warrior character. In this he never gets the blue eyes and acts a bit like the devil on Paul's shoulder, seeing the Fremen as just a means to avenging house Atreides. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say more, but if they were already going to change some things from the books why not bring Gurney in sooner too?
Gurney coming in too soon would have pulled focus from Paul's captivation of/assimilation into the Fremen, which was firmly entrenched by Gurney's re-introduction.
Didn't want to get canceled on X for "culturally appropriating," probably.
"all the other Fremen had an accent but her" They acknowledged it in the second movie.
I'm fine with Zendaya feeling "normal" and understated because she kinda serves as a vehicle for the viewers to relate to. Her not having an accent probably served for that purpose. She also had a good chemistry with Chalamet.
In the second movie she said the people from the south had the accent. Not the North. Shes from the north
I'm with it. I liked it, but Dune 1 felt bigger, had more depth and was better overall. Both had pacing issues that could have been used to flesh out characters or the politics and alliances of the world, but I came out of the theater feeling slightly underwhelmed. I like it, but I think the praise is getting is a little over the top because of the things it gets so right (everything visual) overshadow’s a lot of the obvious problems.
For me the biggest issue was the editing, especially with regards to pacing. In the first half the movie REALLY took its time and I thought it worked quite well, but in the second half everything goes by so fast and there are so many things crammed in, that it’s close to impossible to understand why some things are happening and especially character motivations. It feels very obvious that there are a lot of scenes cut here, as we constantly go straight from A to C with no B in the middle to set things up. The final battle is a good example and a bit of a joke.
I also had some small nitpicks about how it shat on the lore set up in the first movie. There they are using shields constantly and how to get past a shield is a big point in the battles that make them unique. For 99% of the time, this movie acts like personal shields doesn’t exist.
Overall, I think some of the fanatic praise it is getting will turn around in time, since the faults are quite obvious and watching the movies back to back it is clear one has a script that is a lot.
The pacing comes from the novel. The novel has very fast pacing near the end, jumping between scenes to its conclusion.
In novel form, as you read it, it didn't bother you much, but when put in movie form, the scene jumps become very obvious.
Denis Villeneuve is a stickler to source material, so he didn't dare to add too much explanatory scenes that were not in the novel.
In fact he actually added his own explanatory scenes. For example, in the novel the atomics were mentioned in dialogue without being shown.
I mean, saying that its fine because its like the book, but then say it was fine in the book...because it was a book really just deflates your point to not really needing to be stated at all. Movies need pacing, we are visually watching it, books dont because we are not. Pacing of the MOVIE is off.@@JohnJaneson2449

I dont know why the system is pushing Zendaya down our throats? Shes awful in everything.
Z is perfect for them if you think about it. She ticks many boxes and is not super attractive, in fact she's skirts the edge of girlish cute and boyish. In the first Dune at the beginning she's narrating, talking about oppressors and how her people have been victims of, well, a human people who are hairless and marble white 🤣. The message is there, it is thankfully subtle enough to notice with a gag, but without puking.
They want more white guys to like black girls. The problem is, same with other woke agenda, many white guys already like black girls and shoving it in our face doesn't help the cause.
I have read these books and been a fan for a long time. To me, the most important theme that appears in Dune is a specific duality of human nature. We want peace, but we aren’t made for it. All of our deepest dreams are in the image of paradise, but all of our heroes and legends are remembered for their sacrifices. We as a species feel shame for our violent past, and yet here we are in the year 2024 still waging war on one another.
Dune is not a story about the Spacing Guild or Mentats. It’s not about Chani or Paul or Alia or any one character in particular. Every detail, every bit of world building, is secondary to the true focus of the story: humanity itself.
Watching these movies it’s clear to me that Villeneuve and his team are reading this story and asking the questions Frank Herbert wanted us to ask. I understand many details were changed or even omitted, but Villeneuve still managed to capture the essence of Herbert’s original story. To me that makes this a masterpiece.

This film stands on the shoulders of David Lynch, it really takes zero chances and isn’t original in any way. It’s just tries to remake the film that Lynch tried to cram into 2 hrs probably due to studio pressure, over the course of 2 films. It’s a set piece by set piece remake of Lynch’s film with a little added exposition. The ending, as compared to Dune 1984, is an enormous letdown that only serves to setup Dune part 3. I prefer to have Paul stab Feyd Rautha in the throat and then explode his chest cavity with the Weirding Way followed by his Heretic Sister screaming that he is the Kwisatz Haderach, but maybe I’m Weird too.
Zendaya/chani is the weakest part of the film and that ending scene was unnecessary and weird for people who know the story.
I liked the movie but they cut one of the best characters I wish we could have seen on screen (young Alia) and changed the ending enough to make me question how the will set up the second book to cannan standards. Chani was also way more likeable in the book. (No constant resting bitch face.)
Kinda understandable they changed Aila because a cgi toddler blitzing in a battlefield is super weird.
@@zeronos2844 I can see that. They could have just left her out of battle though instead of leaving her out entirely. The adult acting toddler making the Freman women uncomfortable would have been easy enough to do though. The time skip between the first and second book is 12 years too. They could have fudge the numbers on that a bit to make her a little older too.

@@jerryhorton5708 Also Denis said that he was just trying to show what Frank Herbert wants to convey:
Paul is not a hero.
One of the problems Hollywood has with Dune is they constantly want Paul Atriedes to be "The Hero". But his story ISN'T "The Heroes Journey". And when they constantly try to play it as such it makes telling the story impossible. To be fair, I suspect a truly faithful retelling of the story would not be popular either. So as film makers they are caught in a dilemma that is always going to be "solved" in the direction of being monetarily successful.
I like that it ended the way it did.
Sure they could've gone even harder into the dark implications of what's in store but it did a pretty good job nonetheless. Not perfect but good.
It is a hero's Journey if you read the first book. The follow up novels deconstructed the hero's journey because there was no place to go but down for the author. The only issue I had was most of the fighting against the Fremen. Every Fremen being able to kill with no or very minimal casualties just made most of the battles feel weak. I guess that's just me though.
I haven't watched Dune 2 yet, but from the first movie, it feels like they did the Sarduakar dirty and that may be why the Fremen seem overpowered. They definitely seemed weaker than how they were depicted in the Lynch version - the only real improvement in this version is that they drilled home the fanaticism but they left out the brutal competency and diehard toughness of the Sardaukar. Lynch captured that in a weird way - there's a scene where Duncan shoots a Sardaukar in the chest, the dude goes down, then gets right back up and wrestles with Duncan until he gets a dagger jammed right through his head. The book Fremen are supposed to be roughly equal to the Sardaukar, just more numerous and a surprise to the Sardaukar because they are so much better than the ordinary Great House soldiers (per the book one Sardaukar is generally considered equal to 10 Great House soldiers).
They sustained massive casualties in most of the fights I'd wager - there's just a LOT of them, and the movie didn't dwell on it too much (at all).
