Amazing Pedals I Wish I Made

  • In this episode, I want to walk you through six pedals that I wish I had created. Let me be clear: this isn’t a pity party. I’m not stuck with a case of the woulda-coulda-shouldas. This is just me being honest about six pretty fantastic pedals that I wish I’d thought of first. I think we’ve all been there. The fact that these pedals exist period is the main thing. It would just be cool to see a JHS Pedals sticker on the back of a few of these. You get me, right? I knew you would.

It's actually a great content marketing tactic. Not only does it make JHS seem generous, but also like they're knowledgable 'pedal nerds'. Who would make better pedals, than those informed by the greats?
Plus, you're watching it, which means that while seeing all these other great pedals, you're seeing the JHS logo on the amp, in the intro etc. I'm getting pretty marketing nerd here, but it's building your associations with the brand, positioning them in your mind, and giving you recall (every time you think of a RAT, you might also think -- oh the JHS guy loves those).
If you want to learn more, read Byron Sharp's 'How Brands Grow', and hunt down 'The Long and the Short of it' (you can google a .pdf online). They're dense reads, but they explain why you buy shit. And why stuff like this is so fricking important for businesses.

It’s genius, if you ask me. I always get skeptical of sellers who try to push, and they all try to push.
JHS actually got me started on pedal obsession and allowed me to expand my pedal possession.
And to summarize JHS mentioning his competitors, I’ll reference Issac Newton with his awesome quote,
“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

I’m in Kalamazoo and I can tell you there’s definitely something in the water. Heritage has already been mentioned and it’s great to still have that factory cranking out classic guitars crafted the same as the Gibsons of the past. There use to be more music in the town since it’s a stopping point between Chicago and Detroit on tour circuits.

I went to Manny's Music in NYC in 1986 with about $500 to buy an amp. Some guy there said that the best thing I could get for that money was a Roland JC120 with a Rat pedal. I checked it out and walked out with both, and three Rolands later (they're built like tanks, so wearing one out takes quite a while), I thank whoever that was. I got major compliments from tons of players since, and many of whom gave me either strange looks when I wheeled it in or outright mad fun of me before they heard it. The Rat was the perfect accompaniment.

Huge props for your very genuine humility. I own several JHS pedals and love them all so far. The Morning Glory will never leave my board...and neither will the Dispatch Master. If there was any pedal I wish you'd use as a base for a future project, It'd be When the Sun Explodes reverb/fuzz....
As far at DIIV, I've loved them for a long time, but the first time I heard them I just figure they were trying to be Built to Spill....check out the tune "Douced" for DIIV and then check out "Going against your mind" by Built to Spill...you can definitely tell where they got some of their influence from

About the record: "Diiv = Slowdive without the 'slow'" was appropriate for the old Diiv (Oshin/Is The Is Are). Deceiver is often very drugged out sounding yet immensely intelligent. It's part Siamese Dream Smashing Pumpkins (they even kinda "quote" the riff from Soma), part MBV, part Pygmalion Slowdive and the rest, well, Diiv.

FYI - re: Kalamazoo and weird events... Back in 1964 a creature fitting the description of Big Foot was sighted by one of the inland lakes about 40 miles south west of Kalamazoo. That was probably connected to the alien technology pedals from Kalamazoo and all the hairy beasts playing those Gibson guitars for the following decades (Dickey Betts, Zack Wylde, I'm calling you out. 😉)

I'm a Heritage nut. I have a really early 535 (their version of the 335), a 150 (LP Standard), and 170 (LP double cutaway). For solidbody fans, the guitar to look for is the 140 with a Florentine cutaway. It's 2/3 the thickness of a Les Paul with all of the output and a beautiful look.

On one of the greatest days of my life, I was in Kalamazoo, travelling across the country with my sister, the summer of '82. When it dawned on me what else was in Kalamazoo, I looked Gibson up in the phonebook, and called, asking if I could drop in to buy some parts. I was told that they were closed for inventory, but what the heck, come on by and I could get a tour. So I did, and what a day! Even went through the expanded part that was added for the "folk boom of the '60s". Saw harp guitars, got to try the "map" guitar, and was encouraged to "just breathe on" a Kalamazoo Award, which seemed to have breathed life into it. When I asked about possibly scoring a Bigsby spring, I was told that they didn't carry them but that the Bigsby factory was just across the highway. I drove on over, knocked on the door, and who should greet me but Ted McCarty - yeah, THAT guy - who had retired from Gibson and was now president of Bigsby. He gave me a tour, and was pulling stuff off the shelf and unboxing it like he was showing off the model train he got for Christmas. My first ever time seeing a 3-lever palm-pedal...and gold-plated to boot.
Just feeling the wooden floorboards under my feet at Parsons St. was an honour. And McCarty's business card is framed in my office. Toldya it was a great day.

In the late 60's there was a boost pedal that Vox and Heathkit sold. It looked like the wedge part of a Tone Bender in the Vox unit, and the Heathkit version had similar dimensions, but the lower portion was made of Tolex covered plywood with a green metal plate holding the circuit, pots, and switch. It had a great smooth, dynamic sound and pushed an amp slightly. I'd love to have that sound again.

It's an AC-powered (likely converted to 12 volts DC internally) analog multi-effects pedal with four effects: compressor, overdrive, chorus, and delay with tap tempo. I use it for practically all my guitar recording, even if just for the buffer. The compressor is can get super squishy, but when set low, can be a nice boost. The overdrive has two modes, and the gain range goes from no clipping to lots of clipping and every setting is good. I'm not a big fan of chorus, but this is a good one. I like the it set to a fast speed. The delay sounds analog, but I believe is digital (maybe PT chip?), and includes a tone control. I would be interested to see what a JHS version of that would be, as I really like my Angry Driver and see the quality and passion you put into your designs.

I’m constantly surprised by the records you chose for Record Time
    Diiv is pretty tight!
If you’re looking for more music similar to them, I’d recommend Launder, Holy Fawn, Far Caspian, Daywave.

Although I feel the Rat is my favorite distortion pedal, I'm here for the Eventide H9 & EQD Dispatch Master. The H9 to me is what I should've gotten instead of the Pod HD500X. So much smaller and their effects just sound better. I currently have an EQD Dispatch Master on my board and I love it so much. It does everything I mainly want to do with Delay/Reverb in terms of ambience.

I share your appreciation for the RAT. I used it mainly as an overdrive... kept all the knobs fairly low. And nothing sounds like a RAT through a Fender twin Reverb.

Roland phase II, (that's a two). Also the Morley rotating wah.
For record time check out Be-bop Deluxe's Live in the Air Age. Best unknown blues rock album of the '70's. Prepare to have your mind blown.

Hey Josh. Really enjoyed this episode. I've been wanting a dispatch master since I first heard of it, but haven't had the chance to get one yet. I just picked up a demo model of the EHX Oceans 12 and I'm wondering if that will be one that pedal makers wish they had come up with. Lots of great reverb sounds and two separate reverb engines that can run in series or parallel. I'm really enjoying it so far.

The Ibanez DMD is like three pedals in one: Chorus, Flange or delay so basically it's 9 pedals you wish you invented :)
My favorite setting BTW is a delay at about 350ms with a touch of modulation.
Add an SS10 and you're in total shoegaze territory.

The modulating signal wave is different in a chorus and a vibrato. If you do the vibrato mod to a chorus and/or put your vibrato pedal in parallel with a straight signal you'll see how different they are.
