    I completely restored a Pantera back in the 90s, and I mean all the metal that was rusted. What people dont realize is that these bodies were assembled and before paint and primer they were stored in the yard unprotected. Some cars new at the Ford dealers already had serious rust problems. So you have a triple sandwiched unibody (in places) and a serious pain to restore. I probably spent 600+ hours in metal work alone and had to hand fabricate a lot of parts. It was a learning experience - LOL. I should have restored an old Ferrari.

      I plan on restoring '67 Chevrolet Impala. Any advice?

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yes, they were complicated cars to restore, but a Ferrari from the same period can be far worse and the price of parts for them is just ridiculous. A lot of Pantera parts, because, mechanically, they were parts bin specials, are still available for sensible money. And, well, they're not a Ferrari. A thoroughly well-sorted Pantera is easily the car that Ferrari wished it could build back then...

      Troy Ammons That's a shame. Always Loved Panteras. An older gentleman has 2 in his garage here , and told me the very same story about their rust issues and history. He worked offshore and bought 2 when they were new. He loved them and keeps them indoors, and they still have rust issues. Sad

      @@b.c.gamingss Depends on condition. First start telling us what's wrong. I to am restoring a 69 Tbird. A lot of work ahead of you my friend. On my Tbird alone it took me 4 months of hard work to just get the car road worthy again. That's replacing all the suspension, brake system (including power booster and master cylinder and lines too), sanding and painting the underside. Also rebuilding the transmission and rear axle and new tires. Finally rebuilding the steering system. I haven't even started on the body. the trunk needs to be stripped and resealed and painted. Inside I need to pull the carpet out and check the condition of the floor pans. Doors need a little bit of work (no rot thankfully). My biggest problem is the rear quarters. Both sides have rot and need to be replaced as well as the dogleg behind the door. Now I don't know the extent of what you need to do, but looking at what I went through can give you an idea of what you are possibly getting yourself into. Good luck and don't give up on her!

      With today's costs nothing is worth restoring if it is not numbers matching. That is if you use the term "restoring" as to what it actually means. 'Building' a non matching numbers car is a whole different ball of wax.

    • @xp8364
      @xp8364 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also any '66 Impala with a factory installed matching numbers 427 is a COPO car since it was not an RPO yet. We had one and could not keep a starter in it, nor could we buy one for it either. We had to fabricate one utilizing half of the housing from a truck starter and that didn't even last long. That was in 1974 and was one of my favorite cars, out of hundreds, that we have had in my lifetime. 2 brothers bought the car from us and went racing with it at Suffolk Raceway. Like everyone else....if we had only known back then what we know now.

The coating was on both the inside and the outside. They basically put a negative charge on the body and then submerged the body in a bath which is positively charged. Whatever they were using didn't work.

I live in Wasilla and I do know a guy they call mr International because he has the largest collection of the international trucks including a diamond t that was almost a mirror image of the international. He also has some rolls royces and there twin the bentley I believe. I do know its made in england and in the rolls factory so I might have the name wrong plus a harley sportster with like twenty miles on it. H e drove it from the show room to his house. I used to work for John L. as he may not want his name on her but he is a spirited near eighty year old man who can sing like elvis his voice is that good and he loves to sing.

      I worked with a guy that had a 68 427 4sp convertible impala that was red with white interior and top. It got stolen but they found it years later in a police compound yard missing the drive train. His insurance company didn't want to pay (this was years ago) to have it fixed so he took them to court and won. He had a new drive train installed and started driving it again. He passed years ago but his son still owns the car. I loved the shark gills the fenders had.

    You just gave the main reason Nascar is on the decline... You CAN'T go to Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, purchase a car, do a few safety mods to it and go racing. It's gotten way to expensive and way to restrictive for the up and coming Richard Petty's of the world to be able to compete!!! Side note: My grandmother and aunt were on their way back to Charlotte from Columbia SC (visiting my gmom's sister) and her car broke down. A very nice young man and a couple of his friends stopped to see if they could help, my aunt being single and sort of a feminist b4 there were feminists said no but if he was going to Charlotte could he give my grandmother a ride... Of course he did, and when my aunt finally got home my grandmother was all grins and asked her if she knew who that man was who gave her a ride??? It was the King himself.. Mr Richard Petty and family on their way home from a race... She smiled for weeks after that ride, and my aunt, who didn't need a man, changed her tune cause he certainly would have noticed that the coil wire had popped off ;-) Really enjoy your show sir!!!

    Like Tom, I am 61 years old. I saw my first Pantera around 1974 when I was a teenager and instantly fell in love with them. It has been my life long dream to own a Pantera. I have never been able to afford one, but if I could, I would treat it like it was one of my kids with tender loving care. It grinds me to see people fortunate enough to own one and just let it sit outside and rot away or park it in a shed and forget about it for 30 years. What a fricking waste.

      Nothing wrong with a 289. Because they are lighter the car handles better than any of the big blocks. The small blocks can be breathed on with bolt on parts if not already a high output model, so they make a nice cruiser. Also decent gas mileage and reliable with maintenance.

    The pantra was Canada's answer for the Corvette. The pantra was the poor's ever built. If you look close none of the body lines line up and the gaps are off. The gulf wing door are very bad they have a real hinge problem. There's nothing good about the car.

    When you say "not worth restoring", I mean, I have been viewing some car restoration/building of cars in England,...they are stuck there with what they got locally and what they can rebuild and what was popular, Ford Cortinas for instance, and when you say non restorable, I see less rust on that 427 Impala than what some of the vehicles that are getting rebuilt, sometimes with insertions of pieces of replacement metal even in the door posts, just everywhere and donor metal and replacment panels, and panels remade, etc etc. In America, so called restorers really have it good, where the best of the best junked cars are chosen to rebuild, due to minimal restoration work, like door skins, floor pans and quarter panels, fenders too, but imagine rusted out damaged firwalls and extremely damaged roofs, yeah, roofs, I mean, it changed my idea on what a goner car is, and I have minimally repaired hot rods and other cars in the past, so all I am saying is that maybe, just maybe, if a vehicle is around fifty percent rebuildable, then a person could in theory just put in a little more work, especially the costs of so called restoreable hulkks are reaching some rather crazy heights, I guess cause folks flip a restored vehicle as a business. Thirty years ago I had a 1970's firebird with a big block engine, and rust around the rear window, quarter panels, lower door skins, but strangely the floor pans were good as far as I ever knew, and I bought a lincoln sp100, I was fresh out of the army as a mechanic, and taking mechanic courses, and I kept on cutting out rot and rewelding in patch panels, even did some brazing to smooth things over, I mean, folks told me my car was not restoreable, and I hear its still in existence to this day, my repairs were solid and not noticeable, especially how I prepped the panels inside after I was done welding the repairs.

    I hear a bit of disgust in Toms voice. I love it. Because it IS sad those cars are all rotting away. We all KNOW they wont be fixed or rescued. I mean how hard would it have been to spend a couple days throwing blocks under the cars back in the day, not like people didnt know metal rusted back then.
