1 of 1 handmade Porsche coupe, Model T Fords, and some old Hondas | Barn Find Hunter - Ep. 41

  • During a visit to San Diego, Tom gets a lead on a couple unique cars way outside of the city. He and the woody hit the road and arrive at Randy Carlson's house a few hours later. As it turns out, Randy has more than just a couple cars and, to Tom's delight, a good number of fun stories to accompany them. After checking out some Fords, Packards, Volkswagens, a Lincoln, and some old Hondas, Randy pulls back the cover on an interesting custom Porsche coupe, hand-built in Germany by a design school.

Scott Johnston I've restored a lot of cars, the process is wonderful and I will certainly do more, but lately I'm focused on enjoying things as they are and just making the most of it. Not every car needs to be restored to show level to be enjoyed. I also don't hold any of these cars too tightly...when one goes it makes room for something new...and my favorite one is ALWAYS the NEXT ONE!

OH WOW! I know where that rusty bug was sitting for the longest time when he mentioned in the Pismo Beach area! I got my first VW from there as well! I wish I took more pictures looking back. But the yard was owned by a VW collector he never really restored any of the cars but he had lots of projects. The old man died and left it all to his son Randy and that was his bug that he drove around it was the only one that ran from the yard. He liquidated the entire yard and sold everything including the land. The area is known as "The Mesa" in Arroyo Grande. It overviews all of Oceano Dunes and all the sand goes up there and gets over everything. As well as the sulfur and other crap from the industrial equipment around the area caused the amount of rust you can clearly see. It's incredible though how well all those cars lasted despite how long they sat. I am just amazed that I am seeing a that same VW from that same yard just a few miles away from me. I wish it was still there but now it's a completely different lot. There were ton's of vintage one of a kind VW's there that I wish I had the money to get my hands on. But I am sure they all went to the right home as they were priced very fair.

@OubaDubaTuba Baby boomers are not the ones to blame. It is the millennial and X-gen that don't want to have anything to do with cars. I'm a baby boomer and most of us want to perpetuate the classic car enthusiasm forever. We just hope that we can buy fuel to run them. Just try to get someone under 25 interested in an old car. If it isn't electric or something hopped up on nitrous, they aren't remotely interested. Really sad. I take all of my cars to car shows and share information about them. VERY RARELY there will be a teenager interested in my V12 XJS. I'll spend as much time answering questions as they want to spend asking. How is that making sure nobody has any fun any more?

What a fantastic and interesting guy. You’ve met some lovely, generous and friendly people through this series. I often wonder if you’ve met the other kind too but didn’t have anything to present because of their attitude. This collection is quirky and charming - gems of all levels of value. I like my cars ‘earthy’ too. The 30’s Ford appeals to me far more like that than as a gleaming hot rod, and the Honda twins and VW bus seemed destined for Randy. I love his attitude. Thank you for another brilliant production!

California has some awesome cars! I was in LosGatos, and there was a building with a vet in the window... No one knew what the building was exactly... One day the front door was open, and I wandered in. Turns our it was a private collection being sold off. From a perfect 65 Shelby Cobra, a 72 Pantera, an Avanti, to about 30 Corvettes, from 1955 to early 70s... It was such a mind-blowing event to just walk through all by myself and look. If I could post pictures here I would... It was a once in a lifetime experience.

OK, I have always wondered when watching Toms shows if people get slammed with offers to try to buy stuff. I now know the answer is YES! Ive had several inquiries on if anything is for sale. The 57 Lincoln, The Model T Roadster and possibly the school project Porsche powered special (if a big enough offer came in...and it would have to be BIG) are the only ones I would consider letting go at this time. If you talked to my wife she might push for the "yard art" Packard to go...but that's another topic all together. LOL! Ive been asked a few times about the red 356......it is definitely NOT for sale. That one is a "forever keeper" that I love and drive as often as I can, same with the rusty VW and the Land Rover they all get run a lot.
Drop a comment here if you are interested in anything and we can connect. Happy to answer any questions.

Wow Tom this is another video that should be HOURS long. I knew this one would be special as soon as you said the name Randy Carlson. He's a professional appraiser and is on the TV show "Sticker Shock" on Discovery, which replays on Velocity. He's always seemed like an excellent, easy going guy.A million thumbs up for this. (P.S. I'd love to have that Porsche)

Marvellous! Two very passionate enthusiasts who completely respect each other's virtues. It's a pity that empathy cannot be replicated worldwide, it would surely be a better place. I've just subscribed ( before l veiwed this)

That was so cool! It must have been awesome for that guy to flash up the Porsche and here it run again and all due to your visit. I bet you actually inspire quite a few people that you meet in the same way. Good job 👍

The custom Porsche is a custom Volkswagen Ghia. The body is slightly modified. The trunk is cut in half, the rear quarterpanels are smoothed out and the front have a massive lip welded on. But the hood could be an actual Porsche.

My Mom had a 78 Honda civic when I was a kid, but that double ended car gave me an idea, I thought that guy was going to say it was a hybrid, Electric one way, gas the other.
