LOW MILEAGE Buick Grand National press car and barn full of cars | Barn Find Hunter - Ep. 106

  • In the previous episode of "Barn Find Hunter," Tom made friends with a Gentleman named, Cliff Wilson who owned a Dodge Polara 500. As usual, Tom asked the question, "Do you know of any old cars around?" Sure enough, Cliff pointed to a location down the road to a man who restores Case Tractors and also has a barn full of cars. The fun doesn't stop there! Tom then hears about a local who has an all-original low-mileage 1984 Buick Grand National that was a press car in Detroit during the early '80s.

    Great episode. That first guy was as authentic as it gets. Just a genuine love for those machines and obviously passing it down for two generations.

    The first gentleman on this episode reminds me so much of my late grandfather. His mannerisms and directness. So full of knowledge you couldn’t here half his stories or facts if you spent all day with him. Cool old guy!

    I am 64 years old. When I was young I knew a lot of older guys who fought in WWII. They were known as the greatest generation. The first guy with the tractors reminds me of the old timers I have known in decades past. Men with great knowledge, experience, passion and impeccable work ethic. Sadly, those guys pass away and take all of their knowledge and experiences to the grave. I hope that tractor guys grandson learned well from his grandpa and appreciates how grandpa saved all those old cars and tractors and keeps the tradition alive.

    An 84 grand national was 200 HP and ran 15.7 in 1/4 mile, as fast as my 1986 Monte Carlo SS exactly, but the 86-87 grand nationals ran high 13s-low 14s right off show room floor. In early 90s saw many at drag strip. All grand nationals came with 200-4r transmission 4 speed with over drive and 3.42 gears, only options.

    • @Vampirebear13
      @Vampirebear13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your comment was pretty much what I was going to say. Except the 84-86 GN's were NEVER that fast. They ran hot & which really sapped power & when driven hard, they'd really over heat.
      Plus the early 200 transmissions were prone to slippage & got really bad when the engine got hot.
      I spent 32 years in the car business & remember those cars very well.
      My mechanic's daughter has a built 85 GN, over 500 HP @ the wheel but she added a huge turbo & an intercooler & it's her daily driver.

    • @charlieb308
      @charlieb308 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Vampirebear13 86 GN were intercooled as were the 87s. 84-85 slow, hot air.

      @@charlieb308 You're probably right. Been 30 years since I've driven 1. Been told the last few years, if I were to buy 1, only get an 87, unless I plan on building it. I tell them I'm an old man & like stock, dependable stuff. LOL Hope you have a Blessed day my friend.

    • @smartprocesssolutions748
      @smartprocesssolutions748 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They had one GN with the Turbo Six the store could not give away. I was tempted to buy it and put it away. Boy, I made a mistake not doing that, but enjoyed my Cutlass instead….. oh well!

    • @charlieb308
      @charlieb308 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Vampirebear13 the 86 is the same as 87 but 87 was rated at 5 more HP. Car and Driver tested a 86 GN and it ran zero to 60 in 4.9 second and high 13s(it was cold outside that day). The 86 was made in low number 5,500 but 87 is 30,000. The 86 has chrome on front grill. Don’t hesitate to get a Regal turbo, T Type or turbo T, they are basically all the same car except interior, color options and wheels. I remember in 1991 I test drove a 86 regal T Type maroon, the car ran mid 12s, it was so fast my heart was racing, I’m such an idiot for not buying it for only $3400. I didn’t buy it because it had exhaust leak(crack manifold). Boy I’m so dumb.

    2nd part, if it was 10k initial vehicle cost plus $100/mo. storage fees could of equalled $306k compounding in a S&P mutual fund since 93'...
    Top sale on recent Grand Nationals was $30k... this is why I cringe when folks say their cars or collections are their "retirement fund".

    In 1985 I was working for an Olds dealer and just down the road was the Buick GMC showroom and I remember getting the call to take a 1985 Olds 442 down to them and in return I brought back a 1985 Buick Grand National. Not knowing the car at all except seeing that it was a 3.8L on the hood I thought I'd have to really stomp on the gas pedal to get it up to speed with traffic. Yeah...Not so much! Before I knew it, I was doing 75mph grinning like the Cheshire Cat as I blew right past the entrance to the Olds dealer. After about thirty minutes in the car, I return to the Olds dealer and been a super fan ever since. The GNX though........That's where it's at with these Regals. Cheers Tom! Zip~
