My Parents bred and trained German Shepherds for Schutzhund, including showing in German show lines. And I REALLY like this puppy! Good drive (attack factor), fear factor (a good working or protection dog needs a certain level of that. Too much and they're all over the place. But they need a certain amount for the "dealing with adrenaline " sense.) I like that you provided a light hearted, artificial threat with the stick, and you don't see his hair standing up. That's a good indication of how he'll deal with stress. Now, never seriously train a dog until they're about a year old, and you can't see just what kind of dog you have until then. But I like this puppy!!! If I was personally in the market for a Shepherd to show, this is one I'd look at, beautiful dog!

Question: WHY is owner like putting his hands on the dog kind of ruffing him up while he bitting something? Like tapping the side of him and pulling puppy fur etc? Is this to teach him not to get distracted?

I pick up my new baby a few days ago and he is not this energized. He runs a little and then lays down. It does not take much to wear him out. He's very mellow so far at 9 weeks old. He reminds me of my cocker spaniel. She easily tires out because she has a heart murmur and an enlarged heart. His first exam being with me is not until the 17th. Should I try to get an exam earlier? I'm not concerned. I'm glad he's mellow but I don't want the reason for his calmness to be because of unseen medical issues.
It doesn't have to be a health problem right away. The puppy should be inspected by a vet. If he says he is okay, then start working slowly on the better physical condition of the puppy.
