I grew up with GS. Awesome family dogs. Very loving and protective. I always remember when me and my brothers were small. We'd be playing and wrestling around with friends. The female GS we had at the time was always watching us. If she thought things were getting a bit too rowdy, she'd go over and gently pull our friends off of us by their clothes very gently, just to let them know "that's enough " 😅 She was awesome.
@@those.gamers. We are also getting a new gsd puppy on August 6th 🥳 We lost our previous one in February, Chuck Norris. He was a couple months shy of 15. He was a fantastic boy. Miss him terribly. Everything in this video is excellent advice for gsd’s. Made all these mistakes. They’re incredibly intelligent dogs, need lots of activity, love learning new things and have such amazing personalities. Joan of Bark will be given lots of training, we already have 2 large totes of toys for her, and lots of love. Good luck with yours! Hope you have an amazing, long life together.
@@jessicah4462 we’re getting our pup on August 15th! Yours is just in two days, I’m excited for you! My old pup was 8 years old. She ran into the street because she was so excited to see me; you can guess what happened. Her name was Alex, and she’s been gone since June 29th. I miss her a lot, but I’m really excited for this new puppy- just scared because they need a LOT of training! Haha Good luck with your GSD pup! I also wish you two a very happy and long life together
I rescued a German Shepard and she took to me very quickly. She was kind with everyone and the most gentle girl in the world! Fantastic with kids and playful and well trained. HOWEVER, she was very aggressive towards other dogs. Luckily she was only 8 months old (still big), but easier to train. The way I trained her to socialise nicely with other dogs at the parks was by putting a mussel on her and then letting her socialise. I had her on the lead at all times of course and would pull her back if the other dog went for her so she’d be fine, but it worked a trick! 6 weeks later and I’ve finally taken the mussel off and she is great with every dog! So playful and gentle with them! I was originally against mussels but after researching them and the best ones for the dog I found the perfect one that was comfortable for her and easy for me. Hopefully others can have other tips and tricks on how they’ve trained theirs to socialise when they are big?
I’m glad the muzzle worked for you. I think if a dog is aggressive sometimes it’s more lack of confidence defensive reaction sort of fear stuff. Worth a try
I've had a German Shepherd for 7 years, and I really relate to this video. For mine, the best diet for good digestion has been giving both a bit of raw hamburger and salmon-based kibble. She also gets the last couple bites of everything I eat pretty much. I also feed her a lot of carrots so she can eat a lot more without getting fat. Also, one mistake I made is playing frisbee fetch. German Shepherd's, for both bad and good, are reckless when playing fetch. Mine did a crazy jump for a frisbee and fell wrong and broke her elbow. A big regrettable mistake on my part to turn her into a frisbee dog. Also, walking after freezing rain resulted in an ACL tear. She's had surgeries though and gets around pretty good. I made the mistake of trying to be too good of an owner by going out for exercise no matter what. In slippery conditions, stay indoors. While the weather is bad, much better to have a bored an unexercised dog, then one that gets a serious injury.
Four months ago I adopted a gsd from a horrific hording situation. He was housed in the largest crate you can buy with 3 other gsds. When he came to our house, I was the first one he saw and immediately became a " Velcro dog". I have to have a talk with him and give him a job to do before I leave in the morning. It may be, " I have to go to work, so you have to take care of momma and guard the house. I'll be back soon." He takes those instructions very literally. The best dog ever!
Many people who adopt do it fir the benefit of the dog. We have four adopted German Shepherd‘s. All discarded because they weren’t perfect. They have the joy of our lives and sometimes a pain in the rear. But we love them all the same!
Some more things to consider when getting a GSD is do you want a working line or a show line? Working lines have higher drive (work and prey), higher energy, and need jobs much more than show lines. Show lines are typically more easy going, have moderate drive, and typically mellow out at a younger age than working lines. This obviously will vary based on breeding and temperaments, but this has been my experience over that last ten years of owning both lines of GSD’s. Also if you are wanting to do you own grooming (brushing, bathing, nails, trimming hair when needed) it’s best to introduce and desensitize to it as early as possible. You can have a lot of fear/reactivity issues down the line if you don’t desensitize to it early and quickly
@@ianalan4367 eh it’s 50/50. Working lines are usually bred more precise when it comes to OFA’s because they’re typically used in PD, Service dogs, and other high-mobility fields. You can get show lines with hips that are just as good, but because they’re typically more sedentary that working lines they’re prone to more issues with weight which can put stress on the joints and hips. Most of the pics you see of show lines are when they’re in a 3 point stack which makes them look like their back legs are way shorter when it’s really just the way they’re standing. It doesn’t hurt them or make them uncomfortable at all. Both lines are prone to the same aliments due to genetics, which is why making sure you go to a good breeder who does all the testing is so important.
@@x941bri_ but if you look at it, most dogs live around 10-13 years...and it doesn't matter which breed...like humans, they have an expiration date...i got a knee replacement and i tell my friends it's like a water pump on a car or our teeth, parts need to be replaced once in a while...
@@x941bri_ My working line GSD was bred at kennels that did x-rays on all their newborn pups to ensure that hip dysplasia was eliminated from their breeding lines. Friends who bought their show line GSD from an unregistered breeder spent $8000 on an operation to fix their GSD's hip.
House training my GS was one of the easiest things to do! We got a door bell and he rings it when he has to go outside. He was doing it already only a couple weeks in! They’re really such smart dogs if you put in a little time
@@jayving7537 learning comes from observing it being done. I’d recommend if your trying to teach what this person is talking about every time your German shepherd wants to go outside to use the washroom ring the bell yourself once and let them outside. Eventually the German shepherd will attribute it to bell owner rings before they lit me outside, and thanks to there curiosity they’ll eventually try ringing it themselves to see what happens. Then you simply reward this behaviour by using the bell for its purpose, a way for your dog to conveniently signal to you I need to use the washroom. It’s like teaching a learning artificial intelligence how to beat a game faster then every speed runner who’s ever lived, you need to hold its hand and guide it in the right direction and eventually it will do it most of the time. But just like any math addicted person let’s round that most of the time up to all of the time. BTW that was just an educated guess so use my recommendation with caution.
Me and my husband adopted a 4 week old German shepherd cross yesterday. Poor baby was left in a box in the middle of a field and we couldn’t leave him at the rescue. Had him less than 24 hours and we already love him!
This video was great. I've grown up with german shepherds my whole life and this guy hit the most important topics that a GSD owner should know. Great video for new owners.
Ball lock is great, when you are training because then you don't have to rely on treat training. Kara is cross bred with a Border Collie, and her ball lock is shocking. I took her down to the local dog park earlier in the week, there was literally a scrap between two little Jack Russell things a metre away from her and she was locked on the ball someone else had for their dog. I've stopped taking toys with us to the park so she actually HAS to interact. It's a two edged trait for sure.
@@RatelHBadger hey, border collies are working dogs. they're amazing, and you seem like a good owner. I own a GSD (12 years old now) and a malinois puppy (10 months) too, they're also working breeds, and they're amazing. I'll let you in on something that relieved me immensely. Working dog breeds socialize fine with their handlers, and as long as they work and are introduced to people the right way, they don't NEED to play with other dogs. I love watching my little malinois puppy play with other dogs, she loves it too, but she is perfectly content and happy, not missing things in her life when she's just working / training with me, and hanging out at home with the boundaries we've set. Your dog does NOT need access to other dogs in order to live a happy life, as long as you provide them a job to do, which you really have to do with working breeds anyway.
@@Eniroth it's not so much the need to socialize that's the issue, it's more the obsession over the toy above all else. No toy at the dog park and she socialises find, you can do agility training skills etc. One time she found a scummy old ball in the mud, and a dog she had just been playing fine with started getting annoyed with her because she kept giving it to me to throw. To the point it was nipping her legs as she was waiting for me to throw, she was so ball focused it could have gotten out of hand.
@@RatelHBadger that's what you want and often get in a working breed, though. through that toy obsession you can build focus, and if you only let the dog have the toy when she works for you, suddenly you're the most important thing in her life. your word is the word of god. ignoring other dogs is a good thing, and if those dogs then get annoyed at that, well that is them not being properly trained, isn't it? like i said, dogs don't NEED access to other dogs in order to live a good, happy, and healthy, life. it's very fun for us to look at, but not always fun for the dogs who are experiencing it.
@@Eniroth when she's working, sure. Doing the agility training the focus is great. Just the concern around suddenly stopping socialising and the other dog getting quite rough with her to get her to play again. Yes it's the other dog not being trained, but had she had ball lock on someone else with a toy instead of me, the other dog may have bit her and she would do nothing.
I just got an AKC German Shepherd pup yesterday so I've been watching a lot of your videos and they've been very helpful. (: These dogs are incredibly smart. My girl is 9 weeks old. We've only had her for one day and she can already sit and lay down! She has been doing fantastic with my other dog as well as my friends pitbull that she met yesterday.
@Banned4life88 My wife calls them rat dogs. And Deers are just rodents with long legs! May She will Rest In Peace, my dear wife died in April she was only 63 years old from cancer we didn’t get to intercept that one it was upon her before she knew it. I hope the medical community got to learn what not to do although she went to trials for quite a few months to try to find a new medication to help this incurable cancer that women are inflicted with. Endometrial cancer… I don’t understand the difference between that and cervical cancer but it’s always devastating to hear that diagnosis and I never wish that upon even a dire nemesis.
My old man wanted a German shepherd for protection guard dog . I have never owned one. I own a beagle and I knew everything about her. So this new breed has brought on a lot of new education! But I love her so much and she’s highly intelligent. And can play for hours and hours. Lol. So to anyone thinking of getting one… I advise someone to be at home 90% of the time . Simply because they do need so much stimulation! She listens really well and I haven’t been able to pay for training but at this point I feel like a trainer myself 😂. I have bought an obstacle course and even battery operated dog toys to give my arm a rest . We are blessed to have some land. Which keeps her occupied. Get ready to groom! And please clean their ears. I’m obviously here to learn more and more. But I feel like I’m on the right path to success.
Mate, I have a 8 month old GSD and he IS already 40KG. He is adorable and super intelligent but he has a big problem with other dogs whilst walking and strangers. COVID 19 messed up socialising etc. He is booked in for a 3 week intensive professional in house trainer next week and we are confident his two issues will be resolved when he comes home. This is the best channel I have come across. All your points are spot on. Keep up the good work. Love your sense of humour.
Miss Lucy is such a pretty girl ....the first thing we learned when we got our sweet GSD was buy a good lent roller and a swiffer mop lol you will need them but the best thing we ever got was our sweet and very smart GSD yes they are a lot of work but they are so worth it! the bond you have with your dog and all the time you take with them training them and spending time with them is so rewarding our dog is family to us ,thank you for all the helpful tips take care ....stay safe....
Great tips! This is my first GSD and it definitely hasn’t been a perfect journey what so ever but we keep working on training and learning ! Thanks again for the tips!!
Thank you very much for your insight! She is basically my first German Shepherd since I haven't had one since I was a kid. She stresses me out many times as I am 60 years old now and I've only had her a few months.
The second point is spot on! I have two black German shepherds (a boy and a girl) but we bought the second one only after a couple of years, to make sure they both get properly trained. I do recommend getting two, though, because they can entertain one another, and it creates more of a 'pack' feeling/ environment. Both my dogs are also absolutely beautiful creatures, and they make me very proud! :)
Such great advice . I have grown up with gsd 50 years experience and agree whole heartedly with your views . Before purchase make sure you know the breed is right for you , do your research.. you put the work In you will be rewarded ten fold .
We just rescued 2 GSD 3 weeks ago…found them alone on the road. We are guessing they are about 4/5 months old. These past 3 weeks have been so challenging and I feel we are so behind and should know so many commands. We’re still working on potty training too. We have no clue about their early life or how long they were left alone. Please pray for us!
I hope it goes well! It can be really tough, even when you know their past. But every dog is trainable, and it's not true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. You very much can. :)
I'm not religious KC so I cant pray for you, but Bless you out of the bottom of my heart, those 2 will show you more friendship and loyalty than you could have ever wished for...dont give up!!! it' will all have been worth it and the dogs love you even if you mess up or run behind on training
Just be patient, and consistent. Pay close attention to anything your Shepherd's are trying to communicate to you. They'll eventually tell you their past story. I've rescued 4 adult GSD's and have never failed to get one to come around, and stabilize. All wound up GREAT DOG'S.
This is awesome! This is my first dog, AND she is also a rescue. She is 3, barely had any socialization with dogs or people and had NO training! So it is a journey 😂. Have had her for 4 months and she is becoming quite well trained, but there is still so much to learn. She is a pure Czech Shepherd.
Awwww Lucy is such a sweet girl - I've owned three German Shepherds in my life, my first was a girl named Frieda and then she had pups and we kept two, Rocky and Max. I miss all 3 of them just like I miss my dead relatives I was close with. I want another but I'm going to need like another year before I can do that. And yes, they're a handful but the fact that they are SO SMART makes it literally a pleasure to train them, never felt like a chore at all. Now our little puggle Beethoven? He's a totally different story - but he's still a good boi too and LOVES the attention of children especially.
Lots of honest experiences here, both funny and sad. Lucy is lucky to have 2 owners that only want the best for her. It really helps with training if everyone in the home understands the importance of structure. You and your wife have done an incredible job. Lucy is a great ambassador for the GSD breed. So balanced and adorable👍 Such amazing manners Lucy!! walkies=ball😍
My neighbor keeps his German shepherd locked in his crate for 14 to 15 hours with bathroom breaks and water breaks. But its annoying and barks and anything and destroys things and its 2 years old. Wish they had a golden retriever
Okay you got me I'm subbing, I've binged yall for the past few months trying to prepare for my new GSD 🙌🏽 I had a half GSD half Rottweiler before and he was a genius so with your advice things will go well again 🖤
I recently retired and moved in with my son and his year old female GSD. I am not used to animals, especially someone like Juneau. I'm trying to do a lot of research, so really appreciate your video
Long time American bulldog fanatic but 7 months ago I took a shot on a working line GSD and she has fully converted me. She's so smart and well behaved, I've never had a dog so attentive to me or a dog that learned a command so fast. I have no issues with exerting strong leadership so results may very but she is just so responsive, I love spending time with this dog! Had a minor issue with her killing one of my chickens when she was young but she intuitively knew I wasn't happy with that (I never punished her for it) and now she can go into the chicken pen and not touch one of em. I say, as long as you're not too lazy and have the will to learn, and you actually want to spend time working with a dog then there is no better dog on the planet!
Hey buddy !Hope you are doing great!Always happy to see news from you and Lucy! Nice content as always !Let me share my story !As a first time dog owner (male west german showline) i was pretty forgiving with my puppy for the first 2-3 months ..He ended up thinking he was the alpha...He even growled at me when i asked something of him !He would bite me when he wanted to play (not with force but its still not acceptable behavior)...Had to contact a professional trainer to help me with my puppy! The key is consistency !All family members should behave correctly!German shepherds are amazing dogs but need stimulation for great results! Kisses from me and my 7.5 month puppy roco !
Thank you for the tips im training my boy german shepherd now he is 9 weeks old. Btw Lucy is such a good girl sat there with you the whole time and didn't move
Prong collars when used properly are a wonderful tool for training. I use them on my girl and she’s a totally different dog in her prong rather than her flat nylon collar. She knows the prong collar means fun times so now she is eager to put hers on when she sees it.
Great vid! I own a 1and a half year old gsd boy. I've raised and trained him by myself working 12 hour shifts 4 to 3 times a week, since he was 7 weeks. My ex helped me for a short while when he was a puppy. I've trained him so well, we don't even us a lead anymore. But it was A LOT OF WORK, and dedication. But I knew it would pay off and my love for him and dogs in general made it easy and enjoyable.
Thank you for all the great tips and I am new to owning a German Shepherd puppy. I am formally an owner of many Rottweilers but this is totally a new breed for me
I have a White Sheperd Mix, and he barks at anything and everything! He's a wonderful protector. He's gotten much better with squirrels and birds. However, he doesn't do well with cats. Your's is BEYOND BEAUTIFUL. ❤
So cute Lucy sitting there watching the ball, beautiful girl. Great vid again so informative, love the footage with the drone too, (bonus) great tips and will definitely save some grief for new GSD owners !! One mistake my parents made when our family GSD had to be put down because of H.D, Mum rushed out & tried to replace him with a new one, not enough time to heal, not not fair to new pup. Thanks for sharing, your giving these beautiful GSD’S a voice xox 🐾🌸
I'mnow into 9years withmy first self-trained gsd...and he's an awesome friend. First 3 years I was able to train everyday, for hours on end. By that I mean he was always with me, on the bus, in the train, onevents, in the city and outdoors..he was always with me. We did go to school from day 1 until his 6th year, after which I moved to a new home and we actually stopped going to school.Nevertheless I repeat his training still on a daily basis. It's fun and totally worth it. He's 9y old now and always walks off leach..but I'm pretty sure I was lucky to be able to put so much time and effort in him the first years. However..I personally wouldn't buy a second one that early, enjoy your first one for around 6 years and then go for a second, maybe even a third. The older one will hrlp you alot in training the younger ones 😉
Thank you and Lucy for the time and effort you put in. Now, let Lucy play with that ball! She's been eyeing it off for half the clip - I sheet you not. lol. Love it, love it, love it!
My last dog was a wolf/husky. He was a lot of work but so worth it. It’s been about two years since he passed and I’ve finally decided I can’t live without a dog in my home. Have chosen a German shepherd. He’ll be old enough to pick up in a few weeks. Thanks for your list. Really helpful. I had to use a prong collar with my wolf dog for the safety of him and the neighborhood but he learned very quickly not to pull. Don’t really like em but can be a useful tool. What’s great is I’m a stay at home wife and mother so he’ll get my almost constant attention ❤
Good video! I’d add getting the dog used to being groomed when they’re puppies (touching ears, paws, mouth etc), which can be tough with a mouthy/bity pup! That’s our lot lately, lol!
I’m just going to say: we’ve trained our German shepherd to be a livestock guardian. Yes, I said it- LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN (alone) overnight and occasionally during the day. He’s amazing-sometimes mouthy but his prey drive is second to his training. And yes we trained and he loves having a job. GSD’S need a job❤
We are seriously contemplating getting a GSD puppy next spring. We have children ages 7 and 9 year , so safety is our priority. We are giving ourselves a year to learn everything possible about the GSD, including what to do and what not to do. Your channel has been amazing, thank you!!!
Structured Socializing is a must if you have young kids! The way I started off my puppy was but keeping her on a lead and having kids approach her gently with pets and love. If the pup gets overwhelmed, ask the children to take a few steps back but do not remove them or the dog. Socializing with other dogs is also a big must! Socializing at the dog park is not a good method, especially while they’re young. It can create fear reactivity because pack mind sets in and a lot of times people do not have control over their dogs or won’t step in if anything happens. A better way would be to take the pup to a pet store when it has all of its vaccinations and introduce to other dogs on lead and in a controlled environment. That or on-leash parks. Setting boundaries with others and their dogs/children will help prevent a looot of issues down the road. Best of luck to you!
Everything is spot on. We had our girl for almost 13 years. She recently passed. She was prone to having hip problems. She didn’t end up having hip issues. Ended up having fused vertebrae and bad knees. We gave her good supplements, she was on a medicated diet ($$$$), and she was on medications to keep her comfortable. She was amazing. And looked so much like Lucy. She’d have sat so sweetly like Lucy next to me if I were doing a video.
Aww, I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was very special and she was so loved and looked after by you. She had 13 years with you, that in itself is a testiment to how much you loved her. I know how much surgery/medications can be. I am in the process of losing my 8 yr old male GSD, he has Degenerative Myelopathy and I wanted to let you know, I share your pain. Hugs to you. .
@@shavaunaronan3188 I’m so sorry. Our lady had multiple myeloma. We did cancer treatment for a year, something we never would have considered earlier with an animal. We just didn’t have the money. Thankfully the cancer treatment (just pills -no torture) gave us an extra year. It’s gut wrenching to watch someone with such love in her eyes as my girl finally say she’s had enough. I knew the day right away. There was no doubt. I called my husband and told him we needed to call my daughter who would be at the vet because she worked there and she lived with our girl for years. Our neighbors came over and cried and said their goodbyes. All in all, it was pretty much the perfect goodbye. We all know that there are always goodbyes and some are not so full of love and caring and support. A human should be only so lucky to get that kind of treatment. I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through that. But I wouldn’t trade the agony of her death for never having met her and loved her for almost 13 years. It was our agony, not hers really. I’m praying for peace for you in this horrible time. I sincerely hope that your precious boy tells you the exact day when he’s ready to go. That part can be agonizing. Hugs to you.❤️
I've never had a dog before but always loved them. I got a 1yr old GSD that was trained for search and rescue and these tips will help me a lot. He's well trained but I'm not. These tips will help me be a better dog owner. Thank you and Lucy for being there for people new to the breed or dogs in general. Luckily I knew what I was getting into when I got him. Lol
Lucky was very cute and she was a great dog 😍. She was sitting there quietly and patiently waiting for her owner to finish taping his video. Very well trained dog.👏👍🥰
I’m a first time dog owner and was adamant on a GS because I’ve loved them for so many years. Your videos have been so helpful. I just got my pup beginning of the month and we’ve had it rough with parvo and other health issues. But, she is an amazingly smart dog already at only 11 weeks. I hope one day she will be as well behaved as Lucy. The teething/biting period has been painful lol. I wanted to ask, how do you feel about e-collars? I’ve been looking around to hire a trainer early on but half of them seem to be using them. I’m not sure how I feel after doing research. Seeing both sides.
You might be able to train the dog yourself. Im no expert dog trainer, I just watched alot of TH-cam videos on it and picked up some techniques. My German shepherd is so smart that she learned simple commands and obedience within minutes of teaching her. Good luck to ya! I have alot of fun training my girl!
E-collars are amazing tools if they are fitted and used properly. I personally use them with all of my GSD’s and have never had an issue, however, all dogs learn differently so keep that in mind when choosing tools. The recommended age for E-collars is 6 months + but I started mine at 8 months because I wanted to lay the foundations of my training first before making minor corrections with the e collar. I would recommend speaking with a trainer and learning how to properly handle a dog with an Ecollar before use! Best of luck to you!
Loved your video as you hit the things people need to really know about GSD. I grew up with a pack of shepherds and loved them all. My father trained them and they were the best dogs on the street. I remember being about 7 and walking mine around town, she was bigger than me but took care of me and obeyed. My husband was in the K-9 section both in the military as well as police so loved GSD as well. Sadly, we are both retired and while would like a couple, they would be too much for either of us to handle at our age but we both miss them greatly.
Same here. I had a pair of GSD'S. Fabulous dogs. You really get back what you put into them. However, when the second one died aged 13.5yrs, I realised that at 60 and 72yrs, we were too old to start again with you g GSD and give it everything it deserved in terms of exercise and training, so now we have Pomeranian and a Jackchi. Perfect for us, as older people, and hopefully I'll still be walking them for at least another 10yrs.
@@keithgriffiths9864 Yes, a smaller dog suited us. We inherited a fat, silly wonderful beagle who we loved for several years before she passed away at 17. If we do get another one, probably a rescue that needs a home to live out its last years.
So much kudos for mentioning prongs!!! They have such a bad rap (understandable bc of abusers, who shouldn’t have dogs in general) but with the guidance of a skilled and knowledge trainer, they are life changing.
just clicked on this to know some more things but ive had german shepards my whole life and always had 3 at a time recently got a new puppy so thanks for some new tips
I've had GSDs since I was 16. I'm now 100% disabled in my 40s. Got a new GSD puppy about 2 1/2 months ago. Before I had no problems with GSDs and so I thought that of course I would get a GSD. However, being disabled and having a GSD that isn't trained is completely different. This is the 1st time I'm having to send a dog off for training, but being disabled and trying to train a GSD has been extremely difficult for me and I just don't have the capabilities to do it. So, if you're physically disabled, really think about the amount of work that goes into a GSD.
Thank you for this. I am new to a GSD world. Did a lot of research before I committing to adding a GSD to our family. My wife had one as a child and really wanted to get one as a family so we did. Just about everything you have covered I have faced and am facing. My pup is now 4 months and the training is extensive. The only problem i have had is she is scared to death of walks. Not a leash but going out front of the house, going for a walk in the neighborhood, going to the park. Working on her with this. Everything else is pretty spot on. You have a new subscriber in me. Look forward to more content.
Hey Steve, there great dogs I have the same issue with my dog not liking walks she’s Terrified of her harness I think it’s anxiety of some sort I’m not sure about your pup but my girl is pretty anxious I got her in the lockdown so not being able to socialise is a main issue for me, she’s reactive really hard work she’s two now with time she has gotten very good behaviour wise but they go through a crazy phase but just stick it out cause they grow to be wonderful. I had one for 10 years before my girl now. Hope everything goes well for you :)
I have 2 GS that I got 6 weeks apart. Never again. With that beings said now they will be turning 3 and I’m glad the puppy stages r over. I have tried every harness out there. Harnesses r designed to pull. I use a prong collar on both pups because I don’t want my shoulder dislocated or any injury. They do very well with the prong collar. Thank you for sharing
getting my first gsd soon he's 1 year 5 months and in wanting to get into dog training so it's gonna be a project for me can't wait to get the training going
I have a little GSD, thank you for the channel. I put a harness on the dog and he didn't like it. He walked, but it was slower and with less enthusiasm. Put him back on collar and just trained him with a tsk tsk when he's getting close to the end of the lead. He learned in about three days.
Picking up a German Shepard puppy in two weeks and your videos have helped me along the way to making this decision. The only concern I still have is that the wife and I have rescued two dogs already (a lab retriever mix and a pure blue nose pit) and we want to make sure we stimulate properly. I do plan on bringing her to work with me a few days a week and I manage a lumberyard so I know activity won't be an issue but acclimateing a puppy to the existing dogs is my biggest issue.
Lucy Knows you're speaking about her and seems to be be wondering why your comments about "negative" habits are being discussed. Her demeanor is sadly obvious: "Hey, what gives pal, are you mad at me?!" Sweet baby is sensitive and it's so typical of their intelligence! A treat and hug is in order!
We initially did not like the prong coller but our GSD loved it, she hated the other ones so we stuck with it. I like how you said they need to be stimulated every day, very true. We played mental games as well as physical activities with her every day. Best breed if you are committed to them.
Your videos are really informative and always fun to watch! Lucy is gorgeous and smart! I kind of really need your advice though. My parents just got a GSD puppy last month, he's 4 months old now. The problem I see is that the puppy is not getting enough exercise and attention... They usually leave the puppy outside in the front yard, but he would be just lying down in front of the door looking depressed. Puppy gets like 2 or 3 ten minutes walks everyday, and a small amount of bonding time with my parents (def under an hour a day). I play with him as much as I could when I'm there, but that's just one day per week... Good thing is he's been well fed and loved. I could really use some suggestions, thanks a lot in advance!
Hi! I have been binging all of your videos 3 weeks before I got my GSD puppy and they were so helpful! Now we have her I am wondering who you watched or read to train Lucy! She is the goal of how I want our little pup to turn out, thanks for putting all of your stories and learning experience with Lucy!
I'm subbed bro. I've been looking to get a German shepherd and your videos have helped me so much. I'm not sure yet because I know it is alot of work but I've always loved the GSD and it will be my first dog ever. I'm 31 and waited so long to get myfirst dog. I wanted to wait until the time was right. I can't wait with the help of your videos what my first experience will be like.
The one I grew up with would let me hide in their dog house and would guard me so no one could get me.
He was guilty feathers in his lip all over him. He left a gift basket on my bathroom floor. 💩
My family GSD stopped my baby sister from walking down the driveway.
Better parent then the parents
I am 60 years old and starting all over again. She is very loving I greatly appreciate your instructions.
As a new German Shepherd owner, your channel has given me the most realistic expectations and set me up for the most success with my smart lil girl.
I’m getting a GSD puppy soon! Had a JRT before this lol
@@those.gamers. We are also getting a new gsd puppy on August 6th 🥳
We lost our previous one in February, Chuck Norris.
Same here ! 🤟

Haha
Good luck with your GSD pup!
"SHEPHERD" If a person buys one then one expects them to be able to spell the word correctly.

This whole video, no matter what you say or how helpful, I'm just loving how good Lucy looks. She's just so beautiful and well-behaved.
The show lines also suffer hip problems more than irking lines, correct?
Not sure agree dogs are like people with many personalties, show dogs can be reactive even with being socialized.
She's so well behaved sitting next to you! what a gorgeous pup!
House training my GS was one of the easiest things to do! We got a door bell and he rings it when he has to go outside. He was doing it already only a couple weeks in! They’re really such smart dogs if you put in a little time
Hello, how do i teach mine?
@@E-6969 thank you for the detailed explanation 👍 😀
Thank you for the encouraging comment. I’m so very nervous it’s too much dog for us. ❤
Me and my husband adopted a 4 week old German shepherd cross yesterday. Poor baby was left in a box in the middle of a field and we couldn’t leave him at the rescue. Had him less than 24 hours and we already love him!
awwwww.hows it going?
This video was great. I've grown up with german shepherds my whole life and this guy hit the most important topics that a GSD owner should know. Great video for new owners.
Lucy clearly has target lock on the ball the entire time. Another great GSD trait.

I'd always had dogs, but my GSD taught ME how to act with him! Best friend I EVER had.
True and true man!
Most rewarding and demanding dog!
Most loyal pup I’ve ever had

How’s it going?
Thank you very much for your insight! She is basically my first German Shepherd since I haven't had one since I was a kid. She stresses me out many times as I am 60 years old now and I've only had her a few months.
The second point is spot on! I have two black German shepherds (a boy and a girl) but we bought the second one only after a couple of years, to make sure they both get properly trained.
I do recommend getting two, though, because they can entertain one another, and it creates more of a 'pack' feeling/ environment.
Both my dogs are also absolutely beautiful creatures, and they make me very proud! :)
How about the black clothes part? Since your dog is black do you notice the hair less in clothes or cars etc?
Cesar Milan has some great videos on training GSDs.
I'm not religious KC so I cant pray for you, but Bless you out of the bottom of my heart, those 2 will show you more friendship and loyalty than you could have ever wished for...dont give up!!! it' will all have been worth it and the dogs love you even if you mess up or run behind on training
update?
Just be patient, and consistent. Pay close attention to anything your Shepherd's are trying to communicate to you. They'll eventually tell you their past story. I've rescued 4 adult GSD's and have never failed to get one to come around, and stabilize. All wound up GREAT DOG'S.
This is awesome! This is my first dog, AND she is also a rescue. She is 3, barely had any socialization with dogs or people and had NO training! So it is a journey 😂. Have had her for 4 months and she is becoming quite well trained, but there is still so much to learn. She is a pure Czech Shepherd.
I bought 2 at the same time. Is just a blessing with tons of love. And both have different personalities but same love

In your country are dogs allowed in trains and buses ?
This is what I’m struggling with because my pup is bitty
I’m just going to say: we’ve trained our German shepherd to be a livestock guardian. Yes, I said it- LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN (alone) overnight and occasionally during the day. He’s amazing-sometimes mouthy but his prey drive is second to his training. And yes we trained and he loves having a job. GSD’S need a job❤
Just got a pup that’s going to be in a similar situation. Any tips for livestock training? Or keeping them content with their space?
they are made for it... its even in their name.. 'herd'.. they are herding dogs..! from the herding group..

Good clip. Good sense. Good advice. Lucy is looking really good man 👌

Hugs to you.❤️
She’s like.. why is my dad talking to himself? Lollll
Super awesome video!!! Lucy is so pretty!!! 😍
Hey thanks so much
I've never had a dog before but always loved them. Lol
Poor Lucy looked so bored and really wanted her toy.😅
Use a clicker training , when good behavior click to reinforce it then treat
E-collars are amazing tools if they are fitted and used properly. I personally use them with all of my GSD’s and have never had an issue, however, all dogs learn differently so keep that in mind when choosing tools. The recommended age for E-collars is 6 months + but I started mine at 8 months because I wanted to lay the foundations of my training first before making minor corrections with the e collar. I would recommend speaking with a trainer and learning how to properly handle a dog with an Ecollar before use! Best of luck to you!
Yup made alot of those same mistakes too. Great advice
👍😎🐺🐾
Hehe thanks guys
I have three and am only 15 😌😂😂😂....its a blessing 🤗✨, I get to go hiking in my back yard everyday 🤗
Excellent video I’ve owned GSD breed for 56 yrs so far best company in the world
This is my first video of yours I watched. Thank you for the great tips. But I love how Lucy just Watching the toy you are holding in your hand. Lol 😆
My little boy will be ready in 9 weeks! So excited to finally have a gsd
Puppy stage on a GSD is TERRIBLE! I couldn’t walk mine without a prong collar!
Dude great shots and awesome evergreen info! Loved the subtitles for each segment
Hey thanks bro 😎
kindly support and subscribe my channel
getting my first gsd soon he's 1 year 5 months and in wanting to get into dog training so it's gonna be a project for me can't wait to get the training going
I have a little GSD, thank you for the channel. I put a harness on the dog and he didn't like it. He walked, but it was slower and with less enthusiasm. Put him back on collar and just trained him with a tsk tsk when he's getting close to the end of the lead. He learned in about three days.
Lucy sitting there without barking shows the effort put i=on her.
I have a 1 year old male. He's the best dog I've ever had.
Hey how’s it been? Does the pup bite a lot? Does it shed alot?
German Sheperds usually have such great emotional control! Amazing!!!
Loved this!
I agree with you on the harness part. Regular collar works best with a 4 feet leash.
Lucy lane you truly are the queen
Great video mate, thanks for all the tips. 🏆
We initially did not like the prong coller but our GSD loved it, she hated the other ones so we stuck with it. I like how you said they need to be stimulated every day, very true. We played mental games as well as physical activities with her every day. Best breed if you are committed to them.
great video, Lucy only has eyes for that ball
Thanks for the video I have my 1st German shepherd
I think they teach us how to train them..they're awesomely clever.😂
I just got my first GSD as a adult, female and have been socializing lately, then puppy training soon.
