Hawking*. Hawkins**** is that Justin Hawkins? I mean. I know a Justin Hawkins when I see one. The guitar. His counting. Great to see him. Is that him?
I love how the drummer makes the weird time signatures sound so effortless and natural. It took me months to figure out “thin thing” drum beat and play it as natural as Skinner does. Amazing band.
The amount of brilliant music Thom Yorke has put out in the last 25-30 years is just amazing. Him and Jonny are showing no signs of running out of ideas as well, this new album as good as anything they’ve ever done imo. I’m blown away by it! One of the best musical partnerships ever.
And not only have they been together since they were kids, they all were able to mature musically through almost four decades of their lives. There’s also bands that have a couple great albums, there’s only 2 founding members out of 6 but they keep producing records you barely hear about but get by touring and fans keep yelling hit songs to play. Radiohead and specifically Thom actually make new music and it sells and it’s just as good as anything they’ve done which is saying something! They’ve never made a crap records (we have to remember the music at the time) and ability to do what they wanted was so different and beautiful. I know people really miss ok computer era. Miss the old way they’d play the guitars. But I always know “3 Listens” which is what I call breaking in a new RH or off shoot album. I know the first listen I’ll be surprised and I think it could be the one I finally don’t click with. Then after the third listen it’s the only thing I pretty much listen to!
This is stunning! The tempo doesn't change, but the phrasing tricks you into perceiving that it has. The verses are definitely 5/4, choruses sound like 9/4 and there's 8/4 and 6/4 parts going on too, in between. But I agree, it's best to just let it was over you and surprise you, rather than fight to make sense of it. It's a beautiful song.
I gave a first listen to the full album on a tide home late Friday night in the fog on a winding road next to a river and it was one of those rare moments where I was accidentally blessed with the perfect soundtrack for a moment in life. It’s just a masterful album.
I'll admit it here, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are the musical embodiment of "aging like a fine wine" and I'm not even sure if this is the best words to describe it. It's just crazy to me, how their sophomore release under this (arguably) a Radiohead spin-off outfit somehow still managed to be just as interesting as the first one. Especially when you consider their ages, it's really fantastic to see them continue growing their artistry and maintain relevancy in the current landscape of music industry and trend, while not succumbing into the so-called "boomer mindsets".
He's not a boomer. And music is the one vocation you cannot use ageism with. I mean I get it, I know some artists go off the rails after a certain amount of time trying to chase $$ and relevancy. But if you've been making proper music your entire adult life, why would you start making crap? Not the Thom Yorkes of the world! I can't see Eddie Vedder who will be 60 this year just start putting out chart grabbing music just because he's 60. I wouldn't expect anything less from Yorke or the many other artists who have always been originals.
@@Ofthegirl09 I'm not saying they're boomers in the literal sense, I'm just referring to this "boomer mindset" thing. What that if you haven’t yet cos it’s an incredible documentary about the greatest album in the last 30 years and in some people’s minds and hearts including mine ever. It changed everything as I’m sure you know. Just go watch that documentary and see what led Thom Yorke break down and then go on to record Kid - A.
The album will blow you away Justin. It’s unique and gorgeous and thrilling in equal measures. These guys do always make music for people who really care about music - bang on. My favourite musicians and songwriters for 30 years.

I’ve seen them live recently and they played some of the music off this album as well as the first one. They are fantastic! They and Radiohead are so far ahead of everyone and have been for a long time. So original!
My formative years were Madchester, The Roses and The Mondays, Acid-House and Rave then onto Oasis and Britpop then I became obsessed with 60s and 70s like we all do and then Radiohead... When listening to "The Smile" remember you have Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead taking things into as many mixed time signatures as you can imagine. Greenwood won an Oscar for the Soundtrack to No Country for old men (and another film I think) Whats special is that Thom can hit and hold notes that form the melody, or counter melody and more. Listen to their tribute to Harry Patch. Its stunning.
Kids are so honest. What a great concept to have them as an audience, and neat to see their different reactions to the music. Bravo to their music teacher. This song is definitely not something that would be on the 'all songs sound the same' category. Thank you for this! I could not for the life of me figure out that time signature either. This is going to be a 3am thought .
I once asked a Radiohead fan group what song by The Darkness Radiohead should cover, reciprocating The Darkness's timeless cover of Street Spirit. None of the fans seemed to find the idea enticing or even amusing. I reckon Thom would be into it though, and could probably drag Jonny along if he promised him he could use the Ondes Martenot on it. But the question remains: what song?
“Jenny, I don’t know how to react to this.” You reacted perfectly to being Thom’d 😊 (Also, I want that kid’s purple jumper with the yellow dinosaur but in adult size.)
I love the video's premise of taking their most difficult composition and watching kids react to it. Absolutely brilliant execution on it as well. The whole album has been fantastic through my first few listens.
That is seriously well thought out music composition, imagine having to write out the notation, imagine having to memorise the arrangement, constant switching time signature and that tempo change. And it still sounds amazing, that's just showing off taking all those variables and still producing a really good song that will unfortunately only have a limited audience in modern music trends. Put simply its genius that will never get fully appreciated unfortunately, but it is amazing.
There are many moments on this album that sound like the Beatles. Most of all, the noisy transition in Bending Hectic which is very very similar to the orchestral transition in A Day in the Life.
So glad you’re on this, I saw The Smile in Austin six months ago, and it was mind blowing, maybe you should venture into this world Justin, I think you’re completely capable…
You have to give it to them.. cause after playing music for 48 years I can't NOT play in time.. I wonder if they did it in studio but ? Could they do it on stage?
The Smile have been great so far. The last two Radiohead albums have been good, but haven't totally blown my mind. These last two Smile albums sound more interesting to me.
“And maybe one day I’ll understand it”, lol exactly how I feel every time radiohead or Tom come out with a new album. The are so far ahead it takes me many listens to get it.
"They're just messing around and having a daft laugh" They did what Metallica did with Lux Eterna: take bits from popular songs and make your new song sound like all of them. There is a reason why this guy keeps saying "now it sounds like"... it's because it does. It constantly sounds like something very good. It ISN'T very good, it just sounds like something we really like and so we get the same feeling. Watch the recent BBC live performance and play "spot the notes that are in tune", or "spot the time the singer hit the note he was aiming for". This is a great post-production band.
I love watching you react to the Smile. This song is mainly in two time signatures. The verses are mainly in 5/4. However, at the end of every repetition of the chord progression for the verses there's one bar of 6. That happened to be the bar you started counting on which is why you got lost lol I actually didn't notice there was a bar of 6 in the progression until I watched your video and counted lol the chorus is in 9.. whether it's 9/4 or 9/8 or what I don't know lol
You'll never know,.BC Jonny likes to switch things up whenever he feels like it. And Thom doesn't mind, he's said in an interview, "it's ok Jon Jon, you can add your out of wack instrumentation, any time you want" lol
For anyone wondering what the 'answer' is to the time signature mystery, it's 7 bars of 5/4 and then a bar of 6/4 which is why justin is being thrown off. The chorus seems to be in something like 9/4 but in a very loose swung half time which gives it a feel like it's slowing down more than it is and that the pulse has shifted. You can count through it though.
The *time signature* is generally a *swing* feel in *5/4* (= 3/8, 3/8, 2/8, 2/8). However, in the A-section's 8-bar loop, they elongate the 8th bar to a *6/4* (= 3/8, 3/8, 3/8, 3/8). What goes down in the B-section is even cooler! - You can see it all in my transcription that I just uploaded to my site ;D
Thom has been a mainstay for me since “Bends” days but honestly Jonny Greenwood is really an underrated creative weapon. Even their individual soundtrack work on “TWBB” and “Susperia”etc. is mesmerizing. I actually like some of the SMILE stuff more than I do RADIOHEAD proper. Now I’ll go into hiding after making that statement…
hey @justinhawkinsridesagain Ive had a headphones listen and I think you heard five - which is right - but i think it's built as a bar of three and then a bar of two. The piano RH is playing the 1 and 3 then 1 and 2 giving a straight four count over five beats divided into those twi bars. Great technique ti use and the Amnesiac has it a few times too iirc
It's nice to be so thoroughly impressed by another human and their artistic output that you just kinda go slack-jawed. EDIT: I'd kill to see you cover Bending Hectic.

How does something so complex come out sounding so pure and unforced. PS Love the Darkness' cover of Street Spirit (and this show, of course) xoxo
This isn't in 5/4? I've only listened a couple of times and then kept hearing it in my head as 5/4 lol.
God. This is so good.
So good.
!!!!
(and definitely a Beatles vibe; that hit me within the first few seconds)
Thom has been a mainstay for me since “Bends” days but honestly Jonny Greenwood is really an underrated creative weapon.
Even their individual soundtrack work on “TWBB” and “Susperia”etc. is mesmerizing.
I actually like some of the SMILE stuff more than I do RADIOHEAD proper.
Now I’ll go into hiding after making that statement…
Justin is a one-man Juilliard… so much talent and musical knowledge.
Lol that thom yorke being my favorite part.
Great analysis, really heart-felt and thoughtful.
Justin is so cute in his fanboyery, he's my second favourite person after Thom Yorke.
ASSKISSER.
It's a similar rhythm illusion they did with Radiohead on the Pyramid Song. There they vary time bar to bar, but it's repetitive and hypnotic.
hey @justinhawkinsridesagain Ive had a headphones listen and I think you heard five - which is right - but i think it's built as a bar of three and then a bar of two.
The piano RH is playing the 1 and 3 then 1 and 2 giving a straight four count over five beats divided into those twi bars. Great technique ti use and the Amnesiac has it a few times too iirc
Yeah I agree Justin im a Scott Walker fan too x
Oh, I love the title "This Is mesmerizing"😊😊😊
This is music that invites you to listen to it...on its own terms! I love it. Beautiful and challenging in just the right ways.
Were you playing some Bert Jansch there in intro?
It's completely reasonable to conclude that "Thom Yorke might be my favorite" based on this audio sample.
You are best thing on You Tube! Much Love Always!❤❤❤❤
Seeing the Smile in Dublin in March 😁 I can't wait!
Same, 20th march, Glasgow, can't come quick enough 👍
What's it for?
It's nice to be so thoroughly impressed by another human and their artistic output that you just kinda go slack-jawed.
EDIT: I'd kill to see you cover Bending Hectic.
Under our pillows is such a good tune on that album.
This is a work of art
