Robert Plant did the unthinkable, he sang Stairway to Heaven, the Led Zeppelin classic, for the first time in 16 years! We never thought we would hear it sung live again by the legend himself, but he did it for a very good cause. Despite Led Zeppelin being one of the most famous rock bands ever, I still think Robert Plant is an underrated rock vocalist. I wish I was there to see this.

I have such massive respect and admiration for Robert Plant. It's absolutely incredible how he has evolved through the decades. In his 20s, he was the original Golden God of Rock after whom so many rock singers have fashioned themselves. Now, in his mid-70s, he's the elder statesman of folk and bluegrass. The man carries himself with such poise, magic, and gravitas, that I want to call him Gandalf.

I watched the video last night funnily. People forget the man is 75 years old, and he still has an amazing voice. Led Zeppelin is my favourite band of all time, and this rendition doesn't detract from how he used to sing it, and the band always tweaked the songs live any way. I think he is a legend, and always will be. Much as your good self, Mr Hawkins.

I don't think Robert Plant is taken for granted, more that he moved on musically and most of the Zeppelin fans didn't line up with the direction he took. I don't think it can be overstated how special Zeppelin is to everyone in rock! Plant obviously had a truly tragic departure from rock and seemed to find himself emotionally in a more folk world afterwards and that's great.

Jimmy Page is really nice too! I randomly ran into him by the Design Museum in London when I was on vacation. Turns out he lives right next to it! He was walking a longer way to his home nearby through the park and I to the metro in the same direction. Had a great conversation about a current art exhibit there and he even took the time to look at some of my own visual art on my phone. We also did the obligatory 'I love your music' thing, but he seemed to enjoy talking about other kinds of art as well and not dwell on his old work with someone who is not deeply musically inclined. I got to tell the hostel I lost my keycard because he was kind enough to sign it with my eyeliner :D

Still to this day I remember the first time I heard Ten Years Gone. I was 8 years old and I woke up at like 8am and my mom (miss you mom❤️) was still up partying with some friends and that song came on. It stopped me on the stairs when I heard the guitar intro riff, with the drop D ( I had no idea what that meant then) and then when Robert sang, “Then, as it was, then again it will be”, it was like time stood still. I sat down on the stairs and listened to the whole song and from that point forward music meant something totally brand new to me. It changed me. That’s who Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones are to me. Great video. Thank you.❤

In 2012 when Led Zeppelin were honored by the Kennedy Center in the US -- as high as honors get for artists -- the show closed with a massive performance of this. The band is in the near balcony, and onstage Ann Wilson sang the living daylights out of it. By the time a huge chorus in bowler hats was singing the closing verse, Page was grooving and in awe, JPJ had that "ah yesssssss" look on his face, and Plant was clearly crying and trying to hold it together.
I read just a year or two ago that he felt this singular performance freed him from the song. That instead of it being an albatross, it was as though the universe took it in and he was just a long-ago conduit. Who can imagine what that was like for him, but I found it profound -- both how it weighed on him and how he was able to let it go.

The humanity of his vocals (because the majesty of his youthful vocals is no longer possible) is what makes this version so special. Is there anyone else who was reminded of the “Stairway” version done by Ann and Nancy Wilson (with Jason Bonham on drums) at the Kennedy Center Honors?

Lucky. He hasn’t t toured Saving Grace in the States since he had to cancel his 2020 tour…for which I had tickets. Allison Krauss two years in a row (I saw that show), but not Saving Grace. Wish he would come back with that show that was cancelled…..or work again with SSS…inLOVED the work he did with those guys….Justin Adams et al.

Bob's a lovely singer, and as the old vocal folds toughen with just nature and time things might get a bit papery - thin yet you as the listener have to hang on every note because it's an event. It's the heart of this guy.

I saw Plant live a couple of years ago. And it was so bloody brilliant and heartfelt. I'm not all keen on how they the guitarist is mucking up Black Dog, but it didn't matter that much because that night Pland did probably the most soulful version of Rain Song I've ever heard. He truly is a legend of our generation, and without a doubt he will always belong on top with Mercury, Marriot, Gillan, Dio, And Cocker. (I know that sounds like a wide spread of singers, but they were all bloody brilliant).

One of the things I like about Plant's later solo stuff is that he isn't really trying to be a rock star any more. The blues/country/folk/world direction he's gone in suits him well, especially as his voice has aged.

Once a great vocalist and he undeniably was, then always a great vocalist as long as the voice holds. I have had the great pleasure of seeing Mr Plant both in his heyday and more recently and the guy is simply phenomenal. He can still impart so much feeling in his vocals that you would have to be dead not to be moved to some extent.
