2017 Mitsubishi Mirage Review: Curbed with Craig Cole

  • This week Craig Cole evaluates the Mitsubishi Mirage, which is kind of exciting since other journalists haven’t been kind to it. Despite the bad press - or perhaps because of it - this little hatchback has been updated for 2017. Even though it gains a host of noteworthy enhancements the Mirage remains Mitsubishi’s most inexpensive model in the U.S.

All the TH-cam reviewers bash this car but every owner loves it. My wife has a 2019 and absolutely loves it. It's not a sport car, it's not a luxury car. It is a well built, commuter car that has a many creature comforts. It gets incredible gas mileage! And don't listen to the "It's under powered and scary to drive" nonsense! I'm 6'4, 230lbs and with my wife in the car it has zero trouble getting up to speed, passing or merging on highways! No problem at all! And don't forget the incredible 10 year 160,000km warranty! and it looks 100 times better than any fiesta, versa, yaris, micra or any of the other sub compact cars. If you spend most of your time commuting or buzzing around the city you should definitely have a look at the Mirage. You'll be pleasantly surprised!

Back in its days the classic air-cooled Beetle was also panned by every critic. Loud. Slow. Weird. Cramped inside. Can't see the edge of the hood, etc, etc. Well guess what- the critics of the day had no idea what they were talking about. The classic Beetle had one of the most elegant designs of that era and developed a loyal following all over the world. It proved to be one of the most durable and fixable cars of all times.

I own a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES CVT that we purchased new and now has 13,500 miles on it and we love it. I wanted a small car that was loaded with options that larger cars get and my Mirage came packed with those features and options and was perfect. We got the top trim ES with CVT and the optional Navigation & Back Up Camera Package, Chrome Package, Cargo Package, Exterior Appearance Package, Front & Rear Park Assist Package, and many more Accessories. All the other cars in the class I looked at cost alot more when loaded out ($2,000.00 to $4,000.00 more) and you could not get alot of the features that the Mirage offered.
For example even the base trim had Auto Climate Control (2017 has manual controls), AC, PW, PL, PM, AM FM CD and Ipod Hook Up. On top of all this you get the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty and 37 city and 44 highway mpg and 40 combined. I average 43 in the city and 47 on the highway but can top 50 if careful. Every owner for the most part exceeds what Mitsu claims for MPG.
One owner on KBB has an Owner Review of their 2014 Mirage ES CVT and it has over 220,000 miles on it with only normal maintenance and wear and tear no issues to speak of (included picture in the review showing the odometer). Mitsubishi has made 3 cylinders for quite a long time and this engine will last! The nice thing about this 1.2L MIVEC Engine is that it is a basic design with very little to go wrong and runs on 0W20 Synthetic which will enusre it a long trouble free life. I personally know 3 Mirage owners including myself and in the 1-3 years of ownership there have been no issues reported besides normal stuff.
Sure these cars are not fast, not overly refined and do not handle like a sports car. But they are reliable, roomy, fuel efficient, feature packed, with a great warranty and have created a cult like following among their owners which is hard to do! I have owned all my cars new but a few (2010 Kia Soul, 2013 Hyundai Elantra, 2008 Hyundai Sonata, 2005 Chevy Cavalier, 2003 Hyundai Accent, 2002 Kia Rio) and never have I wanted the same car again but with the Mirage now it is the only car I will purchase from this day forward. There is just something about them that makes you really enjoy the little car (you have to own one to know what I mean) and all its quirks. So do yourself a favor and go drive one. Dave gave a nice fair review of these cars I must say.

I just purchased a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE CVT in Wine Red and love it. I traded my 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES CVT with Navigation and the updates are extensive. The interior on the 2017s has so many upgrades such as seat fabric material, interior piano trim, seat support, sound insulation, new gauge cluster, new steering wheel, new audio unit with apple car play and android auto, 4 more horsepower and a new roller cam shaft, new suspension updates, smoother idle, fender insulation, heated seats, auto dimming rear view mirror, wide angle rear view camera (G4), rear fold down arm rest with cup holders and even the way the shifter feels going into gear is much smoother. The updates are amazing in making this car feel more substantial.
I got the Light Gray interior which adds a level of class to the interior and will be adding the Mitsubishi Center Console Armrest for $138.95 (my 2015 had it installed). The room inside the G4 is unreal, its huge and the trunk is cavernous!!! I also love the dark chrome alloy wheels and matching front grill. This paint color (Wine Red) is so unique and classy looking.
I had no issues with my 2015 and only traded for the upgrades and the deal I got on this 2017 Top Trim G4 SE. It was $18,115.00 and I got it for $12,714.00 at Renn Kirby Mitsubishi in Frederick MD you should really check out their deals! If you do be sure to see Tommy Moberly he sold us our 2016 Outlander Sport GT and our 2017 Mirage G4 SE and was amazing.
While driving in town the ride is much more quiet and takes bumps with less of a thud and the idle is 50% smoother and quieter. The seats feel extra stuffed and the material is for sure much more premium feeling. The Apple Car Play alone is one of my favorite features and props to Mitsubishi for incorporating that!!!
Keep up the good work Mitsubishi because I am impressed with the updated 2017 model!!!

I bought a 2015 new for like $11k last year. There is nothing wrong with it at all. The seats are more comfortable than my Fusion. I prefer not to feel the road when steering, feels like my Grand Marquis in that repect. I find it comfortable to drive and the front is plenty roomy. It's not as rough riding as a lot of these smaller cars. This guy has no clue what he's talking about other than the engine is somewhat noisy and it's not that fast. Still if you want to take a long road trip and barely use any gas it is quite good.

Drove the 2015 model as a rental over an extended period. Overall it's not that bad for what it is - an economy car. It's no louder at 80mph than a Honda Fit. The I3 is smoother than the engine in the Yaris and is more pleasing to listen to (I3's make unique sounds). Rides softer than a Fit, and about the same as a Yaris. Auto climate control is pretty amazing to have in this price range. Seats were comfortable enough for medium journey trips (100-200 miles) without any pain. Sure, acceleration is quite terrible but this is an economy car after all, where gas mileage is the goal and it doesn't fail in that regard. Much better option than a hybrid car if you're looking at minimizing overall costs.

Car journalists have in the back of their mind still Porsches as a benchmark. Keep the Mirage with CVT under 2000 rpm at all times and you will get comfortably and with a ridiculously low fuel consumption from A to B. Low maintenance cost, higher reliability than all of the competitors, lots of standard equipment where you pay extra elsewhere. I love my Mirage, although I agree that the steering is without feel (but very precise). I do think the price in the US seems too high. In Europe the price compares better with competition. It's not too bad in other aspects either, but the focus was to make it cost-effective no-nonsense car. Besides that, not sure why they are bashing the looks so much. When Momma's happy , everybody's happy. I bought a 2017 Mirage ES for my wife in Sept 2016 though my wife hated to get rid of her 2007 Honda Civic. We are both retired and she said we couldn't afford a new car. After going to the dealer " Tony Mangino Mitsubishi here in Halfmoon NY , I brought my wife to test drive the Mirage . She would have never had gone with me but when I told her about the low price and ten yr warrenty she agreed to go. She left on her test drive with the sales man and when she returned , she was sold. We still have it and she loves that car. She loves how it goes through the snow and ice with it's all whell control . For just over 11,000 grand it has keyless entry and start , back up camera , 7" info entertainment sys with apple and android audio. I don't drive it very often but when I do , I find it very responsive and quick enough for me. I drive a 2002 Dakota PU with a 4.7 ltr eight cyl engine. I don't drive it very much any more cause of the low gas millage . My wifes Mirage get about 45 - 50 MPG , and she laughs at me when I complain about all my money going into the fuel tank when I fuel up. Her Mirage is wine red and she loves it . Every week she takes her 92 yr old Mom out to Dr. appts and shopping . Some say its an old ladies car , but I say when Mom and Grandma's happy, I am happy.

buy a used 2000 dollar car from the early 2000's or 90's. Honda Civic, toyota Corolla, a $5000 2006 Honda Fit with under 100k... I would highly recommend a first car that you don't mind banging up a little bit and no payments. Pay cash. No need for all that costs starting your life.

You can beat this thing and it will take it. I actually like the fact you have to wring it out and don't have to worry about gas.. For a second or third car to slam around it's actually a lot of fun if you don;t expect it to be anything other than what it is.

I have a 14 Mirage with now 90K trouble free miles on the clock. The Engine does "mellow" after 20K and a switch to synthetic oil. MUCH better and smoother at idle. The tires on the car need a changeout to something else to also assist with NVH. The front seats are abysmal but thankfully the puny fuel tank means frequent stops to get out and stretch your legs. This car once broken in gets in the 50MPG on the highway with AC and on Cruise control on longer trips, no lie I make it from NYC to Lake George NY on less than half a tank of gas. From NYC to Ocean City MD on a full tank (with some left just in case). For basic transportation with fuel economy rivaling a hybrid without the weight and expense of repairing a hybrid (Price out a Prius battery pack) that can in a pinch haul 4 adults, or you need the fuel economy of a motorcycle but hate wearing a helmet this is the car for you.

The only two upsides I can really see to this car, are the fuel efficiency, and the 10 year/100,000 miles drivetrain warranty for when you inevitably need something fixed. At its price point, you'd be better off buying a: Nissan Versa Note. $16,550
    Honda Fit LX CVT. $16,990
Toyota Yaris LE 4 door. $17,660
This one's a bit cheaty, because it's about $1,000 more, but here:
    Kia Soul base. $18,190
Alternatively, you could also search for an used car within the same price range. The Toyota Corolla iM would be a good choice. Anyway, I chose to keep my list to hatchbacks only. But my point is that there are plenty of better cars out there for that much money.

I recently just test drove a 2017 Chevy Spark 2 LT and a 2018 Nissan Versa SV (stopped making top trim SL for 2018). I still am glad I purchased my 2017 Mirage G4 SE over these 2 choices. First off my top trim Mirage G4
Had and MSRP of 18,115.00 but with dealer discounts and rebates I got mine for $12,714.00 (reviews never mention the huge discounts Mitsu gives). The Spark 2LT comes pretty similarly equipped to mine but is way smaller inside. The trunk was ti y and my knees were digging into the front seats when I sat in the back and I am 5’11”. Plus the door panels looked cheap in the Spark front and rear. My Mirage G4 SE has the 2 tonight Light Gray and Black interior with Piano Black Accents and really blends the interior together well. Now the Spark came with Leatherette Seats but they felt like Rubber and only had 1 setting for the heated seats where my car has Hi and Low (they kick ass heat wise). The best they could give price wise on the Spark 2 LT with discounts and rebates was $14,800.00. The Mirage and Mirage G4 have earned a reputation for being reliable, having great owner satisfaction and getting MPG numbers well over the sticker rating (by the way the Mirage and Mirage G4 out do the Spark on MPGs). The Spark is a nice car if you want a small hatchback but it only seats 4, has had reliability issues over the years, lower MPG numbers, and fewer features if you compare 2018 Spark LS to 2018 Mirage ES.
Now the Versa and Mirage G4 came in very similar in my experience. Especially in interior room and trunk space. The Mirage G4 has slightly more rear seat room like less than half inch if you compare on Nissan and Mitsubishis pages. The trunk in the Versa is a tab bigger though. Styling wise on the exterior I prefer the Mirage and Mirage G4 as it looks fresher and less frumpy. The Versa has a really long ass end from the side. Plus the alloys on the Versa did not look as sharp as my G4s dark Titanium alloys. Once again the Mirage beats the Versa on MPG numbers and owner satisfaction. The Versa has pretty low owner satisfaction and Nissan has had transmission issues over the years with their CVTs. The 2018 Nissan Versa I drove had a MSRP of $17,190.00 so it undercut the MSRP on my G4 SE but did not have apple car play, heated seats, auto dimming rearview mirror with home link, push start, keyless access, (did have keyless entry), automatic climate control and many other features that my G4 has it did not. But in the end it was marked down to $13,890.00 and my G4 SE was $12,714.00 so once again Mitsubishi came in cheaper. If you look around at Mitsubishi dealers you never pay sticker for a Mirage and can regularly get bas model Mirages for $10,000.00 and top trim ones for $13,000.00 so it is almost always the best deal on price, features per dollar, reliability, warranty, 5 yr unlimited roadside assistance, room (G4), and MPG. Sure this Mirage in the video has a high sticker price, so did mine, higher than this one and I paid under $13k so just remember that. These are great little cars go take a look!

I drove one 2 weeks ago thru 3 states which was about a 6 hour drive and i have to say i would buy this car no problem. The one i drove was a grey es 2018 with 20 miles on it was a 5 speed manual and was pretty comfy got excellent milage 95% of the drive was highway and i was doing between 60 and 65mph and was easy over 45 to 50mpg without a problem. Stereo was ok for me i used the aux jack with my phone. The one thing i noticed was road noise, yes it was a bit noisy but as i was driving i was thinking crap i could spend 200$ and sound dampen the floors doors and and roof and it would be nice and quiet with a few days work (EASYY!!) Heres the kicker.. when i looked at the tag it sold for 9,971$ THATS INSANELY GOOD for this much car..

That really is too bad! The Mirage's price jumps up so quick. Also, it doesn't seem to offer that many "special" amenities that will force you go buy it, besides it low starting figure.
When I review cars I give cars a value rating. This vehicle would probably do decent in the lower trims for value, but will drop a little for value in the higher trims. This is mainly because for that GT trim you have there, there are a lot more refined entries in the segment. That can get you more safety, and in some cases space.
Of course I haven't reviewed it yet nor, completely had time with it. I cannot wait to review this vehicle so I can get a good understanding of it, and just how well it will fair in my tests! Keep up the great work, Craig!

With a lot of miles and low warranty if any? Depends on what you want. What can you get for 10 grand like a base Mirage? I really don’t get the hate on this car, it does what it was designed to do. First off I got a mid range 2017 5-speed for $12000 out the door with a 10000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and lifetime for the engine. Second acceleration is far better than you think it is. Problem is that all of these reviewers are used to driving all sorts of high end cars so the comparison makes it seem week. Almost all of the reviews on this car are done with the automatic which is a cvt that never touches the redline, where as in my 5-speed I’ve done 0-60 in about 8.5 sec which is respectable for 78hp. There is a reason all professional reviews of this car shit on it while owner reviews love it.

Lots of parts and trim lifted from Outlander GT, their top end SUV with awful reviews that's also great deal because the price is so low after so many people run away from what is basically a very decent car for the money . I test drove a 2014 Mirage but guy was only asking $5,500 for 35,000 miles fixed salvage title. My 1978 Ford Fiesta had 66 hp, this has 75 hp but this is much more peppy. It doesn't drive like a minivan or Acccord but for a teeny low cost commuter it does the job, easy to squeel the tires around the parking lot.

Not at all. My wife and I had 2 at one point, the pre redesign 2015 models. Hers was blue and mine silver, I'm 6'4 (fit in it just fine) and don't feel the need to prove how cool I am to anyone. In fact we turned alot of heads anytime we followed each other anywhere, mostly because no one had seen this car before. Had to trade one of them in for a corolla because we go on alot of vacations, and with the babies stuff we needed a trunk. Buuut we won't ever get rid of our silver one. Stupid reliable, (I put alot of miles on it yearly with just oil changes, it's actually fun to whip around town), great warranty plus I can fill up with 9.2 gallons and go 2 weeks on it. Oh and did I mention these are blast to take on dirt roads and race because of the 3rd world tuned suspension and high ground clearance? I'm only 22 years old and the price fit the bill. 200 a month new and that's with 2 years of rotations and oil changes included in the car payment. Btw I've taken mine all the way to it's governed limit of 112 in the desert, so maybe these reviewers aren't man enough to actually see if it goes 80. Definitely alot faster than a Geo metro. This car has too many haters, but that's everyone else's loss. Versas and Sparks are trash but they still sell like crack because people are stupid. This is an a to b car not a Lexus or an Evo.

skystarsystem I doubt it. But only because I have the two cars I need already and it's not worth the hassle or expense since my 2015 is almost paid off. The 2017 does have a much better looking front end though. All the base 2017s I've seen don't have the auto climate either, which would be a huge downgrade in the nasty winter where I live.

I bought a used 2015 Mirage DE CVT for $7600 as a commuter for my 120 mile round trip to work. Currently at 42k on the odometer still running beautifully. The magic of this car lies in the fact that if you want... you can cruise at 60mph in the slow lane and average 55+mpg.. OR... if you prefer you can drive 80mph and still get about 35mpg. Yes it can travel at 80mph, no problem, albeit a bit noisily at just a tick under 3000 rpm.
Seats are comfy for the long commute, my behind can't complain. Suspension tuning could be much improved..and body roll is a bit intimidating, but the car is actually really nimble and can handle freeway interchanges at some pretty high speeds if you have some confidence and a bit of driving skill. Even when the OE low rolling resistance tires.
I have zero problems merging onto the highway or passing even on these crazy California freeways. But you have to floor it... which it actually tells you to do in the owners manual. lol.
Long story short...I bought this car with low expectations, and with a little time and change of driving habits I fell in love with my new little hatchback. And the fact that I only paid $7600 for it makes it that much sweeter.

I mean if you want a cheap starter car, it does it's job with excellence.

Or you could get a Versa which is much bigger for less money.

I'd argue a Honda Fit does the same job, but stays reasonably fun to drive and doesn't have trim rattles everywhere.

The Mirage GT is $17,000, but a similarly equipped Fit EX-L is nearly $22,000. That is quite a difference in price, plus the Fit offers few if any rebates to bring the price down. The Mirage has rebates all the time.
It just depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.

Exactly right. Good luck getting a nice discount on a Fit. I got $4,300 off the sticker price of my Mirage. Didn't even have to haggle. Fully loaded except Nav. Try and get a new Fit nearly loaded for $12,000. It won't happen. I'd never pay anywhere near sticker for the Mirage, but an excellent value with discounts.

it really doesnt sound so bad at least for city. Like cars in japan you dont need high speed and acceleration because theres nowhere to use it. You just need something to get somewhere, also parking is limited there. You can get new vehicles for less than $5000 there.

the Mitsubishi dealer near me usually has them on sale for 9k. they aren't terrible if you can find them for a price like that

I suspect the truth lies somewhere between the jaded auto journalists who can't comprehend any car that doesn't have 350 hp and a heated steering wheel, and some of the infatuated owners who can't see past the gas mileage ratings. I drove one of these at my local Mitsubishi dealer last week and found it to be surprisingly acceptable for a small, cheap, low powered car. But this is coming from a person who likes the appearance of some of the 2 decades old cars better than many of today's "Star Wars" inspired cars, and still looks back fondly on his 1964 Renault R8 1100. I wouldn't pay $15,000 for one of these though, and the sales manager seemed insulted that I would question paying MSRP. For $10,000 I'd seriously consider it.

That dealer was an idiot too. Plenty of other dealers letting them go for $11k. The best is to buy one only a year old and under $10k miles for $8k. The powertrain warranty is transferable, not that you'll need it. These are extremely basic engines, not alot to go wrong.

That is a higher end model but the base model can go for about 10K minimum. This car has fog lights, push button start, hid lights , alloy wheels etc... That's why the car is at 17K. This guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Give my comment a thumbs up if you agree. 👍😀

Dealers like to load on packages and CVT here in the US. I just wanted the $13,000 one, and ended up going with a different brand.

The cvt and manual are literally 2 different vehicles. The five speed is nice, peppy, and gives good control. Not so much with the cvt.
