It is amazing how many people miss this very important point by Not Reading the manual. This is such an important point when a commercial grade machine costs so much. My neighbor on an adjacent farm didn't even know that this grease point was so important. He burned out two gear heads and no body told him why. I have developed an easy fix to grease this hole. I get a grease zirk thread it into a standard faucet washer through the flat side, then the curved side of the washer seals against the greasing hole no matter what size. Just pump the grease through the head until it comes out clean.
Some of the newer models don't even have grease plugs now. They have the spot for it but no grease plug. It's solid. I tap and die em out for either a plug or a zerk fitting. Takes about 15 minutes.
I just removed mine and re-greased the trimmer head, part of my Spring ritual when putting my equipment back into service. Year over year it doesn't seem to take much grease, but at least I know I haven't neglected it.
I've never lost the grease plug, but I have gone through a couple heads over the years, probably due to not greasing them. I now have the Stihl grease tube, and grease them at least once per season. It seems a little expensive for a small tube of grease, but it lasts for years, so it's not a big deal. And it's handy that it screws right into the grease plug fitting, so the convenience is well worth the cost. There are certainly cheaper ways of getting grease in there, but IMO, it's a great investment, because of the ease of use and how long it lasts for its purpose.
Hey Steve, I have shindiawa straight shaft, I found a grease nipple with the correct thread for my gearbox, so easy to grease that way! Makes better edges😏
I've had a number where the plug has never been out and the grease inside is all dehydrated and also doing nothing. It's important to check it once in a while and top it up if needed.
Just my two cents: I put zerk/grease fittings on mine. Two to three pumps and done. Some of the newer trimmers don't even have a grease plug in the gear case. It's a solid mold. On one's like that, I tap em out for a zerk/grease fitting or a plug.
Now that was interesting Steve & I have never seen that before. I will have to check to make sure that the plug is still on my trimmer! Thanks for the heads up! 👍👍
My apologies. Right after hitting send (prior)I thought of my manual (RedMax BCZ260TS). Lubed for long term use but check for 3/4 full with lithium grease.
I had something similar happen to mine during lock down grease dried up then the ball race broke down firing out ball barings had to strip down & try remove the empty ball race ring in the head gear the hardest part of repair was removing the old race Couldn't get a gear puller in I heat up the head to get the old one out took ages but got it In then it was a total head bender cheers Steve 🏴🤘
Hey Steve. Got a stihl 110 weed eater. It does a funky sputter and looses power under heavy load comes out of it with full throttle no load also does seem ever so slightly sluggish punching the throttle. Thing your carb adjustment process would get er fixed up
It's a great idea if everyday grease is ok for that application, but I don't know enough about grease to say if it's ok or not. Also, the threads may be different then typical grease fitting sizes; might have to drill and re-tap, possibly sending metal chips/shavings in there where they could damage the gears/bearings. I still like the idea though; maybe worth doing if done well.
How do you clean a brush cutter that is covered in dried green grass and. Rush debris. It has created a coating on the shaft that is like enamel. Gasoline? Carb cleaner?
I have a FS 56 I believe,, it has no grease port on it,, wondering how to grease the gears in it.. Can't find any info on it. Can you make a video on that, am sure I am not the only one with the new weed eaters that don't have a grease hole.. Thanks for the videos you do.
Please show how to add a Zerk fitting to the Echo SR225/gear head now that the bean counters at Echo and Stihl don’t provide a grease port any longer. What size Zerk fitting would be best? Thanks!
Found a youtube video a while ago about the opposite of this problem. A guy made a video on how to put a grease nipple into that housing so he could pump it chock full of grease under pressure. I think some people need to know what the instructions say.

BTW the 8 point Stihl blade works on small trees better than the blade thats shown here. The 8 points are also far enough apart that it can be sharpened easily for extended life. Works best at high RPM then wave it across the tree kinda quick. Ive cut many Japonica Honeysuckle bush trees up to about 2-3 inches diameter with this technique. Have to pull the root out as poisons do not penetrate the ground fast enough and the roots will either go down or lateral and it will start new growth.
Hi Mr Steve, I have a Stihl FS 70 trimmer and it doesn’t have a plug, I even get a tube of grease one day this winter when I was just walking around our local dealer and got home to check the grease and I had no plug in the head, do you have any ideas of how I could check my grease. Thanks for the help and love the channel.
Do they make a zert fitting plug to put in it's place? I don't know why, but I would think that being able to grease it once in a while would make it last longer and at least make it easier to see that it's missing. Good info. Thank you!
I think a person could drill and tap that plug to 1/4" bolt thread and screw a 1/4" zerk fitting into the plug. Just add grease every few hours and that gearhead should last a long time.
@@p71collector Yes, but is basic everyday grease ok for that? I have the pink stuff that I would use for other equipment in my grease gun. I'd rather use that if it's safe, because I don't like buying consumables that would be bad/outdated before completely used. Buying a tube of an expensive Stihl brand grease that only serves one purpose is difficult for me to justify. If it's safe to use everyday grease gun grease, I'd rather do that, but I don't know enough about grease to know if that's ok.
my dad's number 2 brush cutter still had the bolt, but the rest of the gear head is coming apart. I gave back his #1, when I got my own, so he can take the gear head off that and put it on #2. don't know if he's done that, or is just doing everything with #3.
I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not but I drilled all the plugs on my Sthil attachments and installed zerk fittings. That wal I give it a shot of grease after each use. Very convenient .
I have an FS81. It's over 30 years old, but still works like a charm. I have always monitored the grease level but have never cleaned out the grease and replaced it with fresh, new grease. Does this sound like a good idea???
One should always be doing a once over of their equipment from time to time, it is part of owning small engine equipment maintenence. You can use medium strength blue loctite, removable with torque to ensure components don’t come loose in the application and there is a possibility of disassembling the components in the future. Comes in handy when there is vibration so that things don't loosen up and come loose.
Head Failure? That sounds bad no matter which way you look at it..... I have one of those 'weed wackers with handle bars'. Just checked it and I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up!

hey Steve is there a bolt with a grease fitting on it for this Stilt trimmer/brush cutter??You know how lazy people "me/I" can be about then removing to service this with grease.. Thank you for your time
I got a Stihl weedeatwr as well. But it wouldn't start. So went to check the spark plug and that rubber boot came completely off. That wire broke off inside as well. What's the easiest way to fix that?
Hi, Steve. Been watching your videos recently, thanks for all of the tips, definitely learning a thing or two. Have a question about high/low adjustment on string trimmers. I have a Stihl FS 240, when I switch over to the Stihl 3 point brush knife, should I adjust anything? Or should I just leave it where the settings are for the bump-feed string head? From various videos I have seen on TH-cam everyone makes the point of making sure your string is at full extension before making adjustments. Does the different weight of the brush knife make any difference? Thanks again, keep up the great work. All the best to you and yours.
Hello,i have a problem with my riding mower, basically i was starting it to move it inside the shed when i heard strange sounds from it so i looked under and noticed that the thing (dont know the exact name )with the two pulleys had fallen off the engines crankshaft along with a key and a bolt,do i just have to put the key in and bolt it on and then re attach my two belts back on to the engine pulleys?
I have Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease for my Tacoma drive shaft. Would this work for a string trimmer head? I know there’s so many videos on this but I’m wanting to get my info from a trusted source (like you). Also how much is required.
I try to keep a good eye on my 23 year old FS55 but just because it's you I went to the shed and checked. It's still there. Here's a question... how often should the head be topped up with grease (or flushed and re-greased)? Yes I HAVE topped it up a number of times in the last 23 years but maybe I can get another 23 years out of it. That would make me 88 years old then and I have my doubts if I'll be able to use the old gal by then. ;) Have a good one.
is checking the grease in the head a P.M. item? I have had many trimmers over the years and have notice that plug on them but have never pulled it out to check for or add new grease.
Steve makes a plug for the head grease plug. Classic. I have to wonder why Stihl's design would allow the plug to get loose enough to fall out in the first place. If the issue is that common, it would seem to be a design flaw. I have a Troy-Bilt Powerhead with a weed eater attachment made like that one. I bought a tube of Echo RedArmor Lube to maintain it, so I'll keep a watch for the grease plug if mine has one. Always great advice. Thanks, Steve. I guess April was pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen being quiet as she cooked for this one. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Kinda got used to seeing her.
I have grease zerk fittings on my two stihls and one on my Husqvarna 525L. Had them in for a year and so far all is good 👍😊 Makes maintenance on machinery alot quicker. Just get the grease gun with trimmer gear grease and pump two to three pumps into it and good to go. I do that one or two times a year and keeps the gear box happy and spinning.
@@deanmsimpson your welcome. If you want to know most anything about lawn equipment I can most likely help. I repair and tune most brands. Mostly on two stroke engines but have a pretty good amount of knowledge on four strokes as well. If it isn't blown to pieces I can generally fix it.
@@shawndubay4050 Thank-you very much Shawn! You're a gent! I measured the threads on my Echo strimmer and Stihl hedge trimmer. The Echo grease plug is M8 x 1.25, so that's easy to replace with a grease nipple. However the Stihl grease plug measured M11 x 1.5. Grease nipples aren't available in this size. So I'll buy an additional grease plug and drill, tap and loctite a grease nipple in it to grease the gear box, then replace the original grease plug. The M11 x 1.5 threw me at first. It's a bit of an odd ball size. I presume Stihl do this on purpose so you have to buy their expensive grease?
@@deanmsimpson thank you and yes unfortunately. The drill and tap sounds like a great idea. Should work great. They used to put grease zerk fittings on the old green machine trimmers so as long as you don't go more than a maximum of four pumps of grease you should be good. The grease will circulate when the gearbox warms up and hit high rpms.
Why does my head which is identical to that one not have a grease port at all. It doesn’t have one …. And yes it’s a professional , not a residential .
So why isn't that a fitting? Some people are saying that the grease needs to be topped up from time to time? Otherwise I would imagine you might want to Loctite it in if it's just supposed to be a closed system.

Great tip steve well reminder. Cheers
Thank You...
So why isn't that a fitting? Some people are saying that the grease needs to be topped up from time to time? Otherwise I would imagine you might want to Loctite it in if it's just supposed to be a closed system.
It may be to prevent you from using non-Stihl grease.
I replace the plug on my products with a grease zerk fitting
I replace the plug with a grease nipple . Makes life easier and is a visual reminder to grease the damned thing .
Good idea, but I think it’s a special compound not readily available in a tube.
Got a part number for that grease nipple?
@@lailer1975 Well I would add a bit of transmission oil in a head .. makes grease work better
