I have been a mechanic for 36 years. I started my first job at 17 at a 10 minute oil change place. Went to the ARMY for power generation equipment repairer, IE generator tech. Then on too tech school for Auto mechanics. I have held every ASE mechanical certification for auto including L1, L2,L3 and L4. Plus a few Heavy truck ones when I burned out on cars for awhile, plus much more. I have a lot of respect for this woman ! She knows her stuff and helps us rid the mechanic is always a thief stigma. Props too you Chickanic, you are awesome and a real credit to the industry! There are always new things to learn and most good lessons are hard. You are always welcome in my shop.

You just made me completely sure that 4-stroke trimmers are for someone else. I've ridden 4-stroke dirt bikes for 50 years and......I"m tired of adjusting valves. I absolutely LOVE the simplicity of the two-stroke trimmers. I've got an original Weedeater and a new Ryobi. Wish they were still making the old Weedeater brand.

Thanks, I needed this valve adjusting video. My FS90 was jerky and hard to start. I used your instruction, you made it easy and now it's working like new. I modified a .010 feeler gauge on a bench grinder. I am a retired automotive mechanic and automatic trans specialist, 87 years old, but really ignorant of many problems on small engines. They are a specialty all to their own. Thanks again, I'm smiling!

Mrs Chick, Milton here. ** running like new it was - fueled up, didn’t hit again. After other adjustments with no results this time, watched this video. Do not have this valve gauge. Because I am a member of Chickanic school I talked with the repair man intelligently, I had my weed eater on top dead center and ready for him the next morning, plastic removed and spark plug. It took two minutes, three pulls fired right up and I was charged $2.00. It pays to know (walking in and saying - won’t start is lame). Pretty Cool Mrs Chickanic pretty cool.

My Stihl trimmer would not stay running at idle. I followed your advice and did the easy fixes first: replace plug, replace fuel filter, replace air filter, and clean out spark arrester. It then ran better, but it still stalled out at idle. I followed your video for adjusting the valves and now my Stihl idles normally again. I just want to say thank you for the videos. You do an excellent job of explaining and teaching how to do the fixes. I also appreciate that you give links and part numbers for the various parts. Thank you so much. I really enjoy your videos and I am happy that I can easily fix these issues myself.

Thanks for the video. I had a HT101 Stihl pole saw that wouldn't start. I popped the valve cover off and immediatly saw the exhaust valve rocker arm out of position with the ear of the rocker arm sitting on top of the valve and holding the exhaust valve open. Pushed it over with my thumb and fired on the first pull. Without your video I would have been doing lots of extra work searching for this.

Valves are the most common thing that most customers neglect, because they don't even know that they are there. Landscapers should know more about their equipment to know that they are there, they simply just don't have the time to fix it themselves, cause their too busy landscaping. Excellent video Chickanic!

Alot of the bigger companies have in house mechanic/s to work on there own stuff, buy yes you are right they should know how to work on there own equipment, or at least have some knowledge of what's going on, a lot of times it's something very simple to fix, and these small engine shops are making killer money, i don't know how many times lawnmowers and weed eaters have came to me and the customer says it wont start. And you wouldn't believe that the only thing it needed was gas put in it. There has been thousands of weed eaters thrown out to the curb because of the valves needed adjusting and most people don't even know where to start on that, and from what I have seen, there's a lot of shops that don't know either, they simply take in your old weed eater and say it's not worth repairing, only because they don't have the knowledge to fix it or they don't wanna fix it, hoping the customer will say just keep it, and they buy a new one,

Fun fact: once the valves are adjusted to the proper setting the engine will actually run cooler because the valve face to seat contact will be the optimal duration, resulting in better heat transfer. This may also contribute to less carbon build up. 🙂

I did this myself yesterday and can't believe it but I correctly did it. My fs 131 was getting weird, getting very difficult to start after shutting off. I adjusted the valves and it has good power again. It has been a good one, parts are starting to wear out left and right, might be time to get a new one soon and keep this one as back up or spare parts.

My fairly new 4stroke strimmer was not powering up well or sometimes not even starting. I checked the petrol, I checked the spark plug; I cleaned out the carburator; I checked the air filter; I checked the petrol filter; I checked the fuel lines! I had pretty much gone through everything except tuning the carbs and I did not want to go there. Then I went back and washed the air filter(which looked fine) and hey presto, I,m back in business.

A note from an automotive mechanic.
Valve stems stretch from the springs causing the valve to slam against the valve seat.
    They don't shrink (valve stems).
The nut holding the rockers in place should not move though there is a small chance they can
Wear on the tip of the rocker should be very minimal over very long periods of use with proper lubrication.
So if it feels like you are losing some compression chances are good you just need to adjust the (too tight) valves to compensate for valve stretch.
But if you have increased compression (too loose/too much gap in the valves) it's a good sign of wear elsewhere.
    Like a worn cam lobe.
also these particular engines (4 mix) do have a compression release that does fail occasionally.

And now I have to replace the starter cup but I can't get it off the crank shaft. I was trying to pull it off to check the cam. For some reason the cup is loose but must have some sort of burr that won't let it just fall off. after that i hope to get it back together and adjust the valves and see if that isn't the culprit! oh yeah I had to replace the flywheel and replaced the coil and sparky plug in the whole process. The flywheel was sheared. for some reason.

Ive been a certified stihl technician for many years and the charge for our particular location to adjust the valves is already included in what we call a tune up lol of course demographically the price does vary. But our tune up involves replacement of sparkplug if needed, air filter, fuel filter, inspection of spark arrestor, carb check, and compression check. That usually cost the customer in my area 39.99 plus parts.

IN Oz, I bought a Morrison B260S string trimmer 15 years ago. Only replaced a clutch cable, fuel tank, a primer bulb and 3 spark plugs. Original air filter. Runs about 3 hours a month, starts easily and quickly. No other work on it. Never been is a shop for repair. I have looked at replacing it but can't justify +400 or more for a new one that may not last as long. Front part of switch console broke and the console rotates, but the new ones have the same design. Doesn't affect use of trimmer. No engine work at all has been done, and will not be done as long as the trimmer runs and starts easily. Uses unleaded petrol with no alcohol to fuel it and Shell T2 2 stroke oil.

When you mentioned the going bad I told my wife well at least I’m not the only one. Many time I get into a project fix what’s wrong then upon reassembly something else doesn’t work and have to tear it apart.

Great channel. I have the FS 90r. Breaks up or cuts out at the top end under full throttle. I just figured it was the carb so ordered a new one. Now I'm thinking could be the valves. Wish I had found you earlier.

Nice job on the video. The only thing confusing me is some of the other videos say .004 for the valve setting yours says .010 wondered if there were different models with different specs

My FS38 was difficult to start, so I purchase a new carbarator on Amazon. It was a lot less expensive that bringing it to the dealer and only took a half hour for me to replace.

My two stroke trimmer and hedge cutter don’t get a huge amount of use so I store them dry. After use, empty the tank and run until it stops. Use the choke to clear the last few drops. When it’s needed again, be careful to not over-choke it and you’ll be running in no time.
I close the choke, give two pulls only. Open choke, switch on and pull to start. Too much choke will flood it.

Thank you for the tip on the "ez whind" trimmer head btw !
I thought it was just a gimmick but it's legit ! I only bought 1 now I'm ready to put them on bench stock

Another great video Mrs. C !
You mentioned the new rocker cover gasket came in the kit along with the feeler garage,
however, during the re-assembly process, I don't think you said you were installing a new gasket.
That should be replaced every time, correct ?
We replace the rocker cover gasket, and spark plug overtime we do this job !
Thanks for including the list for the valve adjustment job !

I have this trimmer, after its last use it would not start. I took it to shop and they told me i ran it without an air cleaner and the engine was "scoured". I had not run it without an aircleaner, but it was doing like this was, no apparent compression. I tore it apart on bench and found the exhaust valve totally fouled, wd40 and rubbing with my finger had it shiny in a few minutes, put it back together and it immediately started and is running perfect. This thing is nearly new, less than 2 hours on it and it was totally carbon fouled, i can only guess i ran 2x oil in the fuel.

I know adjusting the valve clearance is piss easy, yet watching this I'm shocked by how easy it was. Have you done a video on carb problems? I'll now watch the video about the clutch. Keep the great videos coming

Another way to avoid TDC is to rotate the flywheel until 1 valve is fully open, adjust other valve, repeate on other valve. Done
The only reason to search for TDC is so you can adjust both valves at the same time. Which for this model doesn't provide any time savings, actually adds time.

On this model if your not on
Ded center there is more space between valves and rockers .
I did mine today and noticed that
So y make sure that i wast at the right place...just to avoid problem
It takes less time to do it like that
than to have to correct it after replacing all the cover and it dont works ... thanks Chickanic
      Fs110 4 me a little beast
