Hey Steve and April I am a 16 year old boy, I just lost my dad he was a master STIHL tech most of his life and I just wanted to say thank you, for making the passing of my father a little easier. These videos remind me of working in the shop with him. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hi John, So sorry to hear about your dad. Your comment was the best one here and really touched my heart. I was fortunate enough to have my dad around for most of my life, and I learn so much from him. My wife and I never had children. If you ever need advice on anything from a 62 year old fart like me just comment back and I will get it via email and respond. There is a group of old people who call themselves “The Old Coots”. They set up a booth at farmers markets with a sign that says “Free advice. It may be bad advice, but at least it’s free.” 🙂.
I am sorry for your loss, John. 😢 Please remember that your Dad will always live on, in you, as you. He will be part of your life always because now, more than ever, he knows what’s happening in your life. May your grief lessen quickly. ✌️
I am embarrassed to say, I have never figured out what that clip is for. I have worked on mowers for quite a long time and really haven't given it much thought. When I replace a starter cord, I never replace that clip. Generally no one folds their handle unless it's going to the repair shop. I never stop learning. Awesome video and worth at least 2 beers.
That was one of your best. Have never had one with a clip but was always aware that it may start while unfolding. From the generation that understand things that go vroom vroom
You're a genius Steve. I have been around small engines for 55+ years and have never seen this little lead stopper and/or knew it even existed. You planted the seed in me now....I'll be looking at every lawnmower after watching this video to see if it is equipped with one. Who would have ever THUNK eh? I owe you a beer for this one(Molson Canadian - Made right here in Chilliwack).
Wow, once again you have brought me out of my ignorance. Not only did I not know about that safety feature but the added bonus of protecting the pawls from getting damaged. As they would say in Germany, Danke! 👍🍺🍺🍻🍻
That dual function of the safety bail (interrupting the ignition and allowing the flywheel brake to engage) is why, when I finish using my push mower, I release that bail part way, until the ignition goes off, then allow the engine to come to a stop without abruptly applying the flywheel brake. Seems to me that's easier on the engine. And we all love April, too!
That was hugely entertaining. Benefits and a safety purpose. I was trying to anticipate where you were going with this but you got me. I wasn't even close to any of the reasons for that clip. It's a Steve's Small Engine Saloon riddle. Thanks for putting this up!
I think I have had mowers with that clip, but I don't recall ever having one that the handle would fold forward. In nearly 60 years of mowing, I never even thought about adjusting the handle position with the mower running, so I never heard a ping, ping, ping.
UK - I have 4 mowers with folding handles and none have this clip. However, only one has a folding handle mechanism that lets the rope retract (full handle versus half handle folding) and there is no brake, opening the handle you just have to let it turn the crank over slowly to full extension. The mower would only run if the bar was held in too so it cannot start. But, I would look to install something on that one mower so I don't have to go through the problem of having to get the rope back out each folding. People suggest tying a knot, would there be an occasion a knot needs undone and after time and rope hardening that little sucker will be a ball ache to undo for whatever reason.
I've never had a clip on mine, it's an early nineties, self-propelled, brand name is gone but it's an MTD made mower. I've never folded it for storage. It still runs well. I've replaced drive belts, springs, etc., as they've worn out. Periodic oil changes, not as often as I should, has a 5hp B&S engine. It's around forty years old now and has done very well. Not used as often now, but it starts and runs when called upon. It's outlasted Honda's, Toro's, I bought it when it was all I could afford back then. Because of that mower, I have a strong disdain for overpriced, name brand mowers that, these days, are high-priced crap.
Well I learned something new today! I always thought it was to keep the rope from getting lost inside during shipping as I assume they are shipped without the mower handle or pull handle tied onto the rope.
Watch a pile of stuff in this vein of information and you fella are in the top dozen or so. Thank you, I'm grateful for people like you willing to share what they've learned.
interesting tidbit Steve and April. Never knew what that clip was for. For me, the first thing I do with my new mower is remove the brake and kill switch hardware and mount an external stop switch so that the mower doesn't stop every time I need to let go of the handle to pickup or move something in the yard then need to restart it. what a pain. My neighbor takes the lazy route and ties a rag around the handle each time he mows. 😆
If the clip is lost or doesn't come with a replacement rope and you don't have it anymore, you can use a Heavy Duty Vinyl Cable Tie/Tie Wrap there that is wide enough to have a big enough locking head (that the other end goes into to lock it closed tight) to make the rope stop being sucked into the rope hole where the Cable/Tie Wrap is located. That way you won't lose any rope length. And it's much easier than dissembling, tying the knot, and reassembling. Bags of them are cheap enough and I keep a selection of sizes and length for various applications. I keep one with the loop open just enough to easily pass over the gas arm to lock the engine running if I have to leave it sitting for something so I don't have to start the engine again. I also disable the seat shut-off switch on my riding mowers to keep the engine running, but I don't have pets or kids or anyone else around to worry about while I'm mowing, but that's me. Do as you must or think best.
Well. You got me with the Rototiller video. You'll keep me for everything else... 🤣 I've learned more about lawn mower and small engine in general in 9 minutes 25 seconds than in my whole life. Thanks Steve... 👍👍👍 And my genuine reaction at 4:16 was "Ah ben Tabarnack" 🤣
Yup I was wrong 😂 way in left field in this ball game now we know the small aluminum clip is a safety feature ! Never ever would have guessed ! Thanks great video !
its funny because I was wondering this today when I was working on my push mower haha. I started a youtube channel because of you and taryls videos. thank you guys for putting out such good videos. cheers.
Great explanation Steve. I guess this is same reason that on a chainsaw you should pull the recoil out a bit then release when shutting off to protect the pawls.
If you don't have a clip or a crimp fishing sinker as others have mentioned, I'd suggest getting a fairly good sized zip tie and double or triple wrap it and then tighten it in the *EXACT* position that you want it to remain at!!!😁👍🏻
I use the wire tie to hold the blade brake open. That way I can leave the mower running rather than have to re-start it every 10 seconds. Slide the wire tie off to engage the engine stall brake. (Don't want to have an expensive adjustable throttle or one of those oh-so-dangerous plug shorting tabs- you need a government approved complicated flywheel brakes) use a wire tie to hold the stall bail back and the mower will be just like a Real Mower of 25 years ago!
@@ackack1 If you zip tie it similar to how a "rolling hitch knot" is made, you *WON'T* need any Superglue!!! In fact, I've used this tie method on an electrical cord on the inside of the enclosure so the electrical cord would not pull out kind of a "poor man's strain relief" if you catch my drift!!! Never had one fail yet!!!😁👍🏻
Most of the gas powered mowers that are in stores I don't really see any of these metal clips on their starter ropes any more but I do remember seeing one on my dad's 2010 craftsman lawn mower. I have no idea like why they don't put it on their starter ropes anymore but, not gonna lie I really like the metal clip on the starter ropes because it's much faster than having to pull the starter handle onto the pull rope guide.

Hi, Steve. I have only bought 3 brand new push mowers, but I have never seen one with that clip. I might just add a fish sinker on mine. Thanks a lot. Hope you had a great Birthday.
The clip on my lawn mower is too tight and stops the rope from going in and prevents me from starting the mower. Thanks for this! I don't know how it got like that, but from what you did I think the sides just needs pried apart to make it a little looser.
That was a awesome video Steve O! I never knew that’s what that clip was for, guess I should put it back on 😆. Makes perfect sense, thanks for the heads up! Steve and April Out. Cheers 🍻
That's good to know! I never did like that exposed starter rope. My old Honda hr215 has the starter rope completely self contained. They don't make em like they used to.
When you FOLD the HANDLE of the mower at the end of the season. Back in the past the starter rope was at the top of the engine. The brake required a longer rope, and the notch. I've found in my years. Yes I removed the brake which the stop had to be a screw driver to ground out the plug. But I usually ran empty of fuel any way.
Maybe a bit overthinking, but, would it help to round off the sharp edge of the grommet where the start rope enters the top? Maybe less wear on the rope as it moves in/out?
As a non Merican Is the handle mounted starter rope, to save bending over an inch or two or keep folks away from the sharp spinny bits ? Seems like just more things to go wrong
I've been known to tie a clipped style lock washer into the knot so that knot doesn't shrink after a turd ton of pulls. Just one regular knot won't cut it Steven. She seemed impressed with wise guy Steve tho. I used the alpine butterfly knot once. It worked great alot of cord though. These solutions allow for your engagement finger hack as well. She makes to much noise askin me. Lol
Excellent! Never knew this, I knew it had to serve a purpose I just di not know for what, I mean if the manufacture put it on it had to serve a purpose. This is very good to know and learned something new. Thank you Steve.
Yes it goes right along with titinium ! Hum interesting never had a mower with one of these clips or handles that pivot. The handle mount on the deck has lips that it slips into on all those I have to prevent the the handle from moving forward. I tend to buy brand name high end mowers. I also tighten the wingnuts up as tight as they will go without stripping them out. I hate a sloppy handle it's dangerous and ruins push effectiveness especially over uneven terrain or up hills . The last thing I need is to kneecap myself going up a hill or take my face off as I slip in the grass as I go uphill. Because the handle decides to fold forward. You two are looking as cute as ever. Love how you compliment each other so well . Y'all have a great day 😊!
I thought it was to keep the rope from sucking back into the starter when you took the rope out of the handle loop/guide. Silly me. LOL!!! Thanks Steve and April... you "lernt" me something new again!!! LOL!!!
Mind blown! I knew every starter rope attached to the mower handle had that clip from the factory but I never knew why. I was under the impression it was to keep the rope from winding into the recoil and losing tension or binding or something if it came free from the handle.
I’m about 90% sure my toro I bought last year doesn’t have one of those clips. I don’t even think the hole for the rope is small enough that a clip would stop the rope. I’ll have to look when I get it back out for the first mow of the year soon.
my mower doesn't have one of those. of course, it also doesn't have a folding handle, and the blade clutch, drive, and throttle/run switch are separate controls.
Steve, great explanation so now off to add a zip tie to the cord since I don't have a pre existing aluminium clip on it! Here in the UK its good to hear "al-you-min-I-m" 😊

Mind blown! I knew every starter rope attached to the mower handle had that clip from the factory but I never knew why. I was under the impression it was to keep the rope from winding into the recoil and losing tension or binding or something if it came free from the handle.
Right on
AWESOME TIP!
Glad you think so!
Nice info steve. Cheers
Thanks 👍
I’m about 90% sure my toro I bought last year doesn’t have one of those clips. I don’t even think the hole for the rope is small enough that a clip would stop the rope. I’ll have to look when I get it back out for the first mow of the year soon.
I didn't know that 😊, good stuff
Thank You...
my mower doesn't have one of those. of course, it also doesn't have a folding handle, and the blade clutch, drive, and throttle/run switch are separate controls.
A decent large fishing sinker pinched on might work also for a quick fix.
Great idea!
Great stuff and funny as heck! Would a cow hitch knot on a wedding ring do the trick too? ;)
👍👍🇨🇦👍👍 hello from Northern Minnesota 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Fantastic.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hola Steve great video Sir!👍👍👍
Thank You...
Hi Steve I’m from Australia. I’ve got one on my Briggs and Stratton 625 Quantum engine. What are they called and can you buy them?
Good one 👍🏻
Thank You...
Steve, great explanation so now off to add a zip tie to the cord since I don't have a pre existing aluminium clip on it! Here in the UK its good to hear "al-you-min-I-m" 😊
Great tip!
