    7:15 “just do it for yourself” I feel like we get too overwhelmed thinking if people would like the art or if it’s gonna get likes, views etc. 😭 but art is just to express yourself and truly enjoy it and not worry!

    • @ninja_tony
      @ninja_tony หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      100% agreed, and this is why I get genuinely angry when I see other artists say they want to give up on art because of “not enough likes” or some other external crap. Because presumably, every one of us got into art in the first place because WE loved it, because we enjoyed it. The number of likes or comments you get on a post should not make you want to give up on your art, or you never really cared about it in the first place.

    • @Ebiest_iv
      @Ebiest_iv หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @ninja_tony
      I understand this argument and respect it. You should like your art, process, everything, and respect your hardwork.
      However, there are other reasons someone might value likes and attention. They might want to become a professional, or get their work out there. You need people to like your work to some extent to achieve those things.
      sometimes people post their work only for the purpose of it being seen. Social media might not be fun for them, and if nobody looks at it the purpose becomes meh. if you're the only viewer why post if you can just look at your art yourself and love it by yourself?
      basically as you said you need some kind of intrinsic motivation, but beyond that I think you'd have to pretend you're your own fan for a while. otherwise id argue itd feel pretty pointless. (but this depends on the person)
      but i agree that no one should 'quit art' entirely because of lack of likes. But if social media isnt serving them i dont think they should keep posting if it hurts them mentally to that level.
      (also my bad after reading this i feel like i expanded too much so i hope it makes sense what im trying to say)

      @@Ebiest_iv I see where you’re coming from, but if you want to become a popular artist, get more views, subscribers etc, you can do that! But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy it. People get too overwhelmed thinking for hours if people would like their art or not,but really the purpose of art is fun, just to experiment with different things with art, enjoy the process and more! If you want to be popular, go ahead! no one’s stopping you, but while your posting art, enjoy it. don’t just get too pressured overthinking too many things .post what you want, make it look as good as you want, add details ,but in the meanwhile, make sure your enjoying yourself ! art is a world full of imagination, where you can draw how you feel,fantasy, characters, landscapes etc. so in the meanwhile, enjoy and experiment with art. no worry, no overthinking and just drawing/painting and more!

    I totally agree. I remember that one time I had to present an art homework and I had less than 1 hour. I hadn't even started so I decided to just do it. Didn't even care how well, just present something. After the hour arrived I realized it was actually OK so when I was going to send it, I noticed it was for next week. I was SO RELIEVED. So I finished the drawing in the next hour, adding details or fixing mistakes. It ended up being the best piece I have ever made.

    I have been drawing since I was 5 years old... being now 25+ I realise how lucky I was to grow up with art from a different perspective... I still compare myself to some artists and always think "This is so bad, why am I still trying", and a moment later I realize, "I know why... because I love it." I am an artist who never has had a style... never a preference, one day the art looks like one thing, and the next it changes... I wish my art was consistent, but at the same time, it is interesting to see what happens next!
    Appreciate the wisdom, it is comforting in a way knowing that someone goes through similar things ♥

    I love these videos of yours that expose the mental side of being an artist, and this video in particular is one that I really needed to see, so thank you. The cool thing about this video is that your message about expectations can apply to other things too (i.e. sports, music, writing, etc.) and being too caught up in expectations is something that everyone experiences eventually. So, even if you're not an artist I think that anyone can watch this video and relate to it in some way.

    I was so glad to listen to this video!!💥
    Recently, a friend gave me a mini sketchbook, it was so simple and cheap compared to my expensive sketchbooks, I immediately put it aside without putting any expectations on it at all. It's been more than 3 months now, I've completed this mini sketchbook, I've been drawing all kinds of doodles in it all the time and everywhere, experimenting (after all, this is a cheap skb. It's not a pity to spoil it). After completing it, I realized how much my skill had grown, I started drawing with a pen, using liners that were drying there because or no one was using it, the hand became light and the drawing speed increased.
    One day, sitting at the table, I remembered my sketchbook that I bought last year but never drew more than 5 pictures in it. I was just afraid to use it and I thought it was strange why! Is this mini sketchbook better than my branded one!
    I finally found the answer in the video thank you so much for that❤

    This is something I did year ago, after a decade of doodling around, hating my art, dropping art multiple times for months or even years. Year ago I found small and lovely artist community and I've decided to come back to art one more time, just to have fun, not caring about end results. I experienced so much growth within this single year, that I would never expect or even believe that it could happen in that short time span.

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm 31 years old and both social media and mental health struggles have taken their toll on my creativity. As a teen I'd still be willing to give my drawings a go but at some point I stopped creating art completely for years. Not because I stopped wanting to create but because I was too scared and overwhelmed to do it. Then I started photography and it was going well cause it's more forgiving. But once I started uploading to IG and hoping ppl would like it, it became less and less fun and I started realizing I was making photos JUST for IG. I'm trying to change that mentality and I've also slowly begun picking up art again. This video helped me see it's not a unique struggle but it feels good to see someone put it into words. I will definitely try to create just for fun, rather than expectations of what others may like or what will give me more likes online. And embrace imperfections a bit more too. x Nina

    Yeah i definitely feel this. Just recently tried a big painting 3x and failed 3x. I just never got it right and it felt so rigid. But when I looked at my rough and loose colour test the brush strokes looks so much better. I thought it might have been brush size vs paper size issue but it might also be because of the pressure of painting big. So now I'm just gonna step back and paint smaller in my sketchbook. This advice came at the right time as I'm feeling like my big pieces have been very blah lately. Gotta take that pressure away.

    I had a recent experience with a painting I posted on TikTok which is currently my most liked post. I went into the painting with zero expectations, didn't really expect it to go anywhere in likes and views or be "perfect" and in the process I didn't see the beauty of the painting at the time, I just felt like going with the flow with it and it turned out better than I thought it would. It feels nice to go with the flow with art alot of the time instead of forcing.

    I love this! As a kid and teen I would draw and paint with so much joy and freedom but then perfectionism came along with a force as an adult. Your advice was just what I needed as I have been slowly finding that joy in art again. I started making handmade bookmarks using scrap pieces of my bristol paper (way less intimidating than a full page) and using brighter colours than I would normally - now those bookmarks, created with zero expectations, are some of my favourite works to date.

I'm almost 30 and I've wasted my twenties being consumed in this rabbit hole of constantly overthinking everything and convincing myself that I'm not good enough, but having the mindset of expecting nothing in return and just doing it, not only for yourself, but just for the fun of it, can make a huge difference, and its something I'm trying to manifest now. its always nice to see another large creator express the same sentiment.

    I picked up my sketchpad and pencil while watching this video. I saw a WLOP drawing in a thumbnail next to the video. I have tried recreating WLOP's art before and have failed. I knew that would happen this time too. I just wanted to practice drawing. I heard his advice. About not having expectations. I was not paying any attention to the draw, just going with the flow, with no expectations.
    The video ended and I had a good look at my page, I was shocked to see a decent drawing that looked pretty similar to the original.
    so I can tell you from experience, this advice is COMPLETELY TRUE. My favorite one so far.

    lately i have been doing arts just as a form of venting my emotions that i cant talk about due to life problems , and every and each of them turned so well, i was not expecting anything at all i dd not wanted numbers ,i was just talking through my arts , and i am so proud of what i did as i am watching this vid i am working on an art and will post it too , so yeah expecting nothing is the best way to at least not disappoint yourself and ruin your creativity

    I am working on a painting of the ocean and I'm in a new style. I'm usually a portrait artist so seascape and sunsets are a new challenge for me...and I was hating it. I've begrudgingly been repeating my favorite mantra of "just trust the process" and I can't say it's made it easier, but I had a breakthrough today! Then I come downstairs to cook dinner for the fam and this video was a God sent! Thank you and blessings to you Sam!!! This really helped!

    I remember at some point I looked at my art and thought "My art is actually really bad" and started comparing a lot. Someone in my school can draw and color so realistically it is a photograph.
    I didn't even know HOW exactly I wanted to draw but I wanted it to be good. I was really sensitive to feedback before but now I know and feel better.
    thx so much. 😊😊😊❤

    Thank you Sam I had so much fun at drawing when I was a bit younger and people told me wow this looks so good I’m sure you always draw like that and at some point I don’t wanted to draw anymore I mean I am not bad at it but I haven’t got fun at it but now after your vid I know why I stopped drawing and I will start again

    This is actually super helpful for me since I deal with this a lot- I have a sketchbook that's half full of mediocre (and sometimes unfinished) drawings that I did directly in the sketchbook hoping they would be good enough to show people, post online, etc. Meanwhile the other half is full of much better sketches cut out and taped from assignment worksheets and post it notes that I did just for fun. I was always annoyed by how these drawings were always better but now I understand and can work on my mindset! Thanks Sam :D

    I experienced it a few days ago, I tried so hard from scratch for years to become a good artist, I learned like a madman and and and.
    Also, I only have a part-time job to draw more and work towards my dreams. So it was really difficult not to have expectations.
    Then I had something like a break, a burnout, cried a lot. After that, after a while I drew without any intentions or expectations and yes, it turned out 100% better than my usual stuff XD

    The fact that I started mindlessly doodling while watching/listening to the video and it's the best piece I've made in months shows how accurate this is... I did not expect anything for this doodle while I did expect a lot when I was drawing other stuff earlier today... wtf Sam, why are you always right (Tbh.. love that, no hate at all

    Recent events have helped me relate to this- doing artfight this year, i drew a strangers oc because they had a fun design! Every step of the way was so satisfying and fun, and the end result reflects that in my eyes:]
    The piece i drew immediately after for an online acqaintance/friend? Stressful, not good enough while i was drawing it, not good enough when i finished it to the point that i want to try again after the event is over.
    Im no artist yet, but as i learn and grow- I'll try to remember the fun. It’s the whole reason i want to in the first place:]💙

    This advice really does help, because I have done some art recently that i didn't expect anything of and they turned out to be some of my favourite ones I created. It's important to get out of that tonic way of thinking about how many likes will get on your work and when to post it, I have done that before and it doesn't help my creativity at all.
    Also it important to create up yourself too, especially if art is what you love to do
    So Thank you for this Video Sam it really has opened my eyes to this

    I really never thought about it that way, but if I think about it, the best art I make is when I’m drawing on the corner of that test that I probably failed, and the only expectation of it is to make my teacher a tiny bit happier about their sad job
