  • In this episode of our beetle home Restoration we assemble the Swingaxle transmission with some new seals/gaskets and a reinforcement plate. Shout out to Greg from Vintage Vws Canada for all the parts and the information he shared.

If im not mistaken the swing axle and IRS transmission are the same they just have different axle drive, or gearing depending the years.

Yes I believe the only big difference being the differential and the side plates

My Beetle’s engine turns when I move the car in the garage, even though it’s in neutral. All gears work, but I have to press the clutch to move it. It’s a project car and not running yet. This problem started recently, about two weeks ago. I swapped in a 1.8T engine and kept the Beetle flywheel. Two years ago, I removed the transmission oil but didn’t refill it, and I’ve been moving the car around the garage without issues until now. Could this problem be due to the lack of oil? Could something have broken because there was no oil? I read on forums that maybe a gear is engaged-how can I check for that? Or do you have an idea of what could be causing this problem?

@@sadness3out961 if you didn’t take apart the trans at all, moving it low speed with no oil shouldn’t be a problem , if there was an issue you’d feel binding in the shifter. Now if you ran the engine for a long time with no oil in the trans , then you could’ve warmed some parts up in there and one of the hubs could’ve friction welded on the shaft .
The other thing I’ve heard is if you jam on the shifter too hard you can get the hockey stick stuck under a selector. But In that case you would feel the lack of gear selection in the shifter
