As long as you enjoy it 😂 there’s a great series on TH-cam that has since stopped because the host left the company, it’s called Gourmet Makes. Worth a watch if you haven’t already
Dude, kinda fun to watch, I have never taken apart a gear box before, (was never that brave). After watching you, I think that maybe I could handle it. I have 2 vintage bugs and both transmissions are good. but nice to see how they work if I ever have a problem. Thanks
Thanks for watching! Keep in mind, these splitcase trans are very different from the later swingaxle transmissions. I haven’t taken one of those apart yet but Rach and I plan to pull hers apart for her car at some point.
There is a big VW car show this weekend in Sacramento Ca. I will see if I can find. I was told it might take a few transmissions to build one. Thank you! Plus I heard the tools to work on split cases are hard to find.
try using yamabond or honda bond on the cases. it lasts longer. the aviation eventually seems to leak. That is why we switched many years ago. It wont for a little while but after a few years. It is for motorcycle case halves. hondas and Yamahas dont leak unlike harleys.
@@wickedwerks case halves yes cylinders no but it would probably work. There is a a permatex product we used to use on cylinders. or just use mega black silicone. gaska cinch on like oil pump gaskets. Basically a contact cement. Or you can use on oil pump spray a gasket. really thin and just holds the gasket in place.
Thanks for putting this video together. Besides the Samba article you reference, there is very little else documenting how to rebuild/refurbish these type of transaxles. Mind you most people replace them with a more "modern" swing axle. Other than Mike's observation of missing first gear syncro ring, I'd say it's a success. Thanks for a great video!!
Thanks for the reminder! I meant to put a link to that samba thread in the description. I think Mike was joking, the splitcase trans is a non-syncro first gear.
I did exactly what you mentioned about putting the diff in upside down. It was awful 😂. 1 foreward gear and 4 reverse gears. That was alot of work to pull it back out and tear it apart to flip that back over. Ill never make that mistake again
All a process of trying different stuff. I don’t mind pulling it all apart and trying to a different seal, or building another one with a different sealer. Thanks for watching!
@@kaptainkirk719 Mike was making a joke because these early splitcase transmissions do not have a synchro for first gear. The bolt on the reverse gear selector was torqued down; I just didn’t film it.
Nice video! I'm here because I recently acquired a 54 bug and may need to do this. Want to see if I can tackle it myself. Have you tested the trans yet?
@@williambroer64 kinda sorted! I’ve been able to drive around the parking lot with reverse, first and second. Trying to sort a charging issue and finish the suspension before I take her on the road. You can do it, super easy!
@wickedwerks that's good to hear! Good job! This car is a real survivor. 54 ragtop semaphore car. All original and 95% complete. Got the original motor running and it runs perfect with old German wires still! Tried the trans yesterday. Pops out of first immediately and I believe 3rd gear slips or barely moves when I rev. Do you know if the syncros and gears are easy to source? Just started researching! Tha is for the reply! You got another subscriber! Keep up the great work!
@@williambroer64 I’m not sure, I haven’t had to do it myself. I remember hearing a few years okay that first gear was difficult to find. I’d make sure your shift coupler is in good shape and see if adjusting the position of the shifter base helps at all; trying moving it forward a little bit. Good luck! Thanks for watching
@wickedwerks ok. Yeah I have it up on jack stands right now. That's how I was testing it. In the air. Going through the brake system at the moment like you.
Unfortunately, I don’t know either. I would imagine if the edges of the teeth on the gear; where it meshes with the slider are all chewed up or worn down; it’s probably toast.
A man with patience, a very rare thing. I hope that job is successful.
First time seeing a splitcase transmission go together. Looks like you did a good job.
Like a 3D puzzle. I've changed pistons, cylinders and heads on a VW engine but never tried a gearbox. Well done! 🤘
Great video Taylor. Real insight into the inner workings of the gearbox.
This and cooking shows. Why can’t I stop watching? Lol

Very familiar with Honda-bond; I was a Honda tech for a few years. Do you Honda-bond on the engines as well? For case halves and cylinders?

Nice work, hopefully you have no leaks, I used that curlt stuff and it didn't seal :( I changed over to permatex.

Yes. The large gear attached to the axles
This is called the ring gear. If you can find a replacement, you can replace it. Though I am unsure of the procedure to do so.
Did you find out where that ring goes ?
Also didn't see you tighten that first nut up
Not yet. I’m sure it will reveal itself in the first test drive, assuming it even belongs to the gearbox. What first nut?
read the first comment Mike said where it goes as far as the nut it was the first rod you put in that had that adjustment ? not sure whats it called

Just found your channel and Subscribed. Very nice work
Really enjoy your videos!
I removed all the bolts from my split case and cone as well but can’t get the case apart. Any thoughts? Thanks
really starting to like your videos

@wickedwerks oddly enough the bad trans is probably what kept this car off the road for so many years. I'm guessing 40+ no rust!!!

I am not sure what gear it is, but the biggest one in the whole case is the one with the gears broken off. Can I just replace that one?
@@jshippey do you mean the ring gear? That the axles attach to?
Good video scary 😵😵but seemed to go well!
Your missing the first gear syncro ring!!!!!
Very nice job Taylor . But no way would I attempt that :)

WOW that looked easy LoL
It was surprisingly easy 😂 looking forward to doing a later swing axle, that should be more of a challenge!
