FAIL. Should have got the manual transmission. In a few years when all these Porsches go electric people are going to be begging for the manual transmission cars.
I just collected my 718 Spyder (PDK) about 10 days ago. Picked PDK because of the horrible gearing in the manual (plus I already own a manual 911). Love the car, still running it in, biggest complaint is the sound of the exhaust and the fact it goes quiet even when the sports exhaust is on. Will be sorting that very soon.
Yea. The pleasure of the new EU Emission rules. The cars must be now tested in the loudest condition available. So it`s not more allowed to get louder than that even with the exhaust "open". Special sound Emission rules are also on the horizon. They plan to put microphones beside the road and send you a ticket for being to loud. Like speed cameras. Just for sound. - Sad, sad ...
It goes "quite" on certain RPM/Gear Combinations (So it depends on speed) because of the noise emission tests you have to pass. You need to drive by a microphone in 5 meters distance with for example 50 km/h in the 2nd or 3rd gear - than accelerate full from that point. So at this point the the exhaust has to be "silent" enough to still reach the allowed max level. So it mutes it down for test.
There’s only a couple of MPH difference in the gear ratio’s. Matt Farah broke it down in his review on The Smoking Tire. I think the difference is that you’re more likely to use 1st gear in a PDK.
Porsche and manual gearbox enthusiast here: I agree with Sam. Given the very long gear ratios on the manual version, the PDK seems to be the better choice (unless they sort out the gearing). Great review Sam
There’s actually only a couple of MPH difference in the gear ratio’s. Matt Farah broke it down in his review on The Smoking Tire. I think the difference is that you’re more likely to use 1st gear in a PDK.
PDK is the best choice if you want to track the car or if you drive in a lot of traffic. If neither of these apply, manual is the best choice by far for being connected to the car and driver engagement.
Whilst lots of waffle, the review of the GT4 was great. Thx. Been pondering a manual, never once owned an auto (PDK) in 53yrs. But maybe I should! Every review complains about the manual gear2, which puts me off buying one. Thanks again.
I'll never understand people who hate on modern automatics, especially the PDK. If I had to guess I imagine the majority of people who say that have never gotten the chance to try it out...the experience is extremely rewarding and enjoyable, and I have just as much fun with a PDK as I do a manual.
What do you think of this? I get the feeling those who cry out for manuals, who overly hype manuals, are either over the age of 35 or younger enthusiasts wanting to “fit in” with other petrolheads, who themselves want to fit in with older guys. I know manuals are getting ever so slightly rarer nowadays, but an automatic can be as engaging, or even more so than an old-school manual. Manual isn’t always, 100%, better and the must-have gearbox option.
@@magnustan841 Well said honestly, as usual old people wish everything could be the same as when they were young. Just because they like it more doesn't mean it's better.

Brilliant stuff, my crayon pdk gt4 is at the port in Germany at this moment! So excited. Hope you enjoy yours!
@@johnwheeler3019 same to you, good idea for the new registration 👍🏻
There’s only a couple of MPH difference in the gear ratio’s. Matt Farah broke it down in his review on The Smoking Tire. I think the difference is that you’re more likely to use 1st gear in a PDK.
@@jryalls there’s 10 mph 1-2nd then it continues more up the gears, so it’s actually considerable, real world, which is why those of us who know, know! Speed is my preference though and I wouldn’t argue with someone who just wants to go between 2 gears everywhere except the track, that’s their choice 🤷🏼♂️
@@johnycarrera The PDK does 79mph at the top of 2nd and the manual does 83mph. The fact of the matter is, if you want a manual buy the manual and if you want an auto you buy the auto.
Always preferred the Cayman over the 911 to the derision of many friends and the GT4 is a life goal for sure (not before I bag a quadrifoglio mind). I'm a full convert to auto these last few years so bring on the PDK is say!
Also, where'd you get that shirt, Sam?
Now i am getting a coffee as well
Wahooo
cars do pretty good at dragstrip with manual trans .
What speed can you do in 2nd gear of a 992 GT3 Touring manual?
The gearing is much shorter in the gt3 it’s only the gt4 they stifle it to hold it back m
Short answer: 136 km/h (84.5 mph). Long answer: for the 992 GT3 manual (I assume Touring is identical) @ 9000 rpm: 1st gear 86 km/h, 2nd gear 136 km/h, 3rd gear 241 km/h, 5th gear 299 km/h, 6th gear 320 km/h (max attainable speed; transmission ratio would theoretically allow 367 km/h).
@@MrJef06 Thanks, where did you get that data? How does it compare to the GT4 manual?
@@888mattd 718 GT4 manual: 82, 135, 187, 233, 277, 294 (325) km/h @ 8000 RPM. Source: zeperfs.com/. This site has pretty much everything regarding performances and specifications of sports cars, I love it.
I've got a 987.1 Cayman S... would kill to get in a GT4 honestly!
