It's difficult to generalize about the realities of living in Dubai. There is an unspoken class system based on nationality and how wealthy you are (or not). If you're an Emirati, you have more rights and privileges than if you're an expat. If you're from the West (Europe, US, Canada), you will have access to better jobs and salaries than if you're from the East (India, Pakistan, Philippines). Seeing the labourers working and being bussed around in the relentless heat is heartbreaking.

It's quite ironic actually that these people are the one's who helped built Dubai to what it is today yet they're treated like sh*t.

Watching your video, it's like you're holding yourself from saying negative things about Dubai and somehow choosing your words carefully here. I mean I've lived in Dubai and I've seen and faced the reality of how it was really there. As long as you have the money, luxurious villa/house and expensive cars, you'll be treated very well there... but if you're just a middle-class migrant, the treatment and behaviour towards you are entirely different. Even though I have my share of living there and have a few lovely memories there, but if given an opportunity to live there again, the answer is 'No, thank you.'

All of the negative things he commented on are true, but they are all very easy to abide by and live with. It just takes a bit of time to adjust to. It's fabulous to live here as long as you can learn to keep your mouth shut and keep your opinions to yourself. Also, one major point that I think was missed is that it can be very lonely here. If you are here for a long time, expect a constant turnover of friends. Most people are very transient here, so you're always having to build new relationships and it can get very tiresome. It's one of the main reasons people leave.

Dubai is not just one city -- it's a potpourri of so many different cultures, in which each one seems to find their niche, and is allowed to live their way. Dubai is an incredibly tolerant place -- in fact, the UAE in general is very tolerant. You were spot on with your impressions. I would add, though, depending on your lifestyle & interests, Dubai can drain you financially! It can be a terribly expensive place, or a place to save fantastically, without having to live like a miser!

Once in Dubai my phone fell off my pocket whithout me noticing it when i got a taxi from the airport, maybe the driver called the taxi company to report that he found a phone, and after an hour other taxi came to my hotel and left the phone at the reception where i was asked if it was my phone. So nothing can be stolen in Dubai obviously, it would never happen in any other country in the world. But the weather sucks big time, it was 39 degrees ;)

why would someone steal in UAE, everyone is busy working, and making good money compared to your homecountry, why risk it for a mobile. besides foreigners to any country, are less prone to trouble, why would someone go to a foreign country to start trouble.

Because Dubai employs slaves. Btw, taxi drivers are poorly paid, usually from Pakistan. And behind the veil there are slums, and criminals. Just like in any country. There's lots of poor people who can't afford the nice things. Who do you think maintains this rich city? The slaves. This video and many of the comments make it appear all taxi drivers are honest. That's incorrect.

I live in Dubai for 5 years now. Everytime i take the taxi i sit on the front and talk to them. i realize that they work hard, very hard 7days a week and 11 to 12 hours a day but on the other hand they have 2 month holidays to see their familly.
they are aware of what they are doing and the fact that they have no life.
but the job here for the is crucial. in 20 years in dubai they will save enough to have full retrirement for ever.
I realize that it is hard to compare. if you compare their life to yours, they are slaves. if you compare their live to their country, they are kings.
the fact that we call taxi driver slave is because of the people that do not respect them (western people). which country that treat them as slave?
it is sad to hear that europeen also treat them as slave but .. they are just human being.
try to take taxi and have fun with them by making jokes. you will realize that they are also fun.
They are slave because of us (People who has money ...)
PS: i am talking about taxi driver not construction. this is another topic.

I think Dubai is a great country (been there last March) but it is hard for the expats to start a family there because of the cost of living. If you are an engineer, there will be no problem as they are paid well. However, if you are an office staff, it may be tougher for you because you pay rent which is quite high and you also pay someone to take care of your kid/s while you and your wife is at work. Education is I think expensive as well. On the other hand, locals in Dubai are doing well because they are paid higher than the expats. I live in the Philippines.. salary is lower in general here but cost of living is low and you can even save more if you are thrifty. A haircut in the Philippines is around 2-3 dirhams. Most Overseas Filipinos Workers in Dubai have a long distance relationship with their family which is a sad thing. They can't bring their family in Dubai because of the cost of living/education.. so they are separated from their family and send money to the Philippines instead where the cost of living is lower

So what you're saying is that if you come from a Western country, you'll live that nice expat life with salaries way above your actual worth just because you're white. And evenings you spend in bars, socializing only with other Westerners who live the same utopian bubble.
If you come from anywhere else, you'll pretty much work in torching heat with no amenities, your passport will be confiscated to restrict your movement, and you'll be working for money that can't even buy your own food in Dubai. Practically, you'll be a contracted slave.
    Got it.
