Hey Lámidé, thank you for the insight and for explaining your experience. I'm moving to Abu Dhabi on Sunday and I'm gonna be alright! Looking forward to it
@11:42, You’re not lying! Many people from those types of backgrounds have that issue. I’ve noticed it myself as a Londoner myself. Hence, why I want my own children to grow up around people like them. Like you said it’s not about having only black friends but seeing black people of all types of personalities/characteristics in your surroundings. 😊
@17:15, To be fair even on a UK visa you don’t have recourse to public funds (benefits). Therefore, a person could sit around and do nothing (until their visa expires), but they’d probably need to find a job to survive!
Realistically you don’t need £60k a year to live comfortably in Dubai? For corporate roles those salaries are rare for expats! Especially now in an oversaturated market salaries have reduced in the Middle East, even at Management level. 15k aed per month (£35,000 a year) can give you a good quality of life in comparison to the UK as a single person. Living in the main areas of Dubai e.g Downtown/Marina.
You’re probably right tbh, I’d say £60k is the minimum I would accept as someone who works in banking because the minimum price of rent I see for an apartment I would live in is AED 70k (£15k) And I wouldn’t want my rent to be more than 25% of my income
One of the advantages of being a mother in the Gulf as compared to the US or UK is that childcare is more affordable. Consequently, women who wish to keep their careers going and the attendant benefit of a continued income and investment ability are able to do so with more ease. It is also easier to be single if in a good professional position as one is able to secure their financial future and ensure they do not have to worry about retirement. Lastly, the sun issue also depends on where one is living. If one is living in a highrise without a balcony or a balcony in a direction that does not get light, then basking is more tricky. However, if one lives away from the city centre e.g. in a compound with a flat or maisonette with a well-positioned balcony, there are about 5-6 months in a year when one can bask and get that solar exposure. As temperatures rise, basking becomes a process of 15 minutes on the balcony, 15 minutes indoors etc and then stops altogether so one can maximise by putting on shorts and a tank top (if at home). Finding ways to bask is important as Vitamin D deficiency is common in the Gulf amongst those who do not find a way to sun themselves and are not on supplements. A Vitamin D deficiency can then lead to a calcium deficiency which can be evident in increased dental sensitivity and odd aches and pains. Deficiency in Vitamin D can also cause mood disorders as you rightly note.
Hi Lámidé, thank you for your honest video , much appreciated 🙂 if you set up a company in Dubai they issue the tax residency certificate after spending 90days per year in the country. Does the UAE really give you this certificate after the 90 days? Because I've heard that this isn't really true and that they only issue it after 183 days. Cheers!
Girl been to Dubai twice and seen black girl escorts, we saw them in Enish, they come out late at night and just hang about in there and the Arab men were hanging outside waiting for them. This is what the waitress told us. Then during our second visit we saw them at the Marina, we had just left Asia Asia and they were sitting on the benches dressed for “ work”. We were at the expo an old man approached my sister and I we just walked off. I was so pissed off and we were dressed modestly.
The schools in Dubai especially British school are extremely diverse. I have 2 girls and moved out of the UK, exactly because of that, no way I could raise them in London now. Very difficult
I think its time we change or expectations, approaches, and particularly that which we share as a group and take everywhere. We've to mich been integrated into Western capitalistic society. The plan and strategy should be to go there gain whatever experience and money you need to save then return to benefit your community. Look at other groups. They send their men to the Middle East to work and earn money for their family back home. That is the primary strategy. Theyre not thinking about really settling there, finding a mate their, or necessarily for the vanity or boastfulness of what such a move could do for ypur career or let you gain one up on your piers. They have a strong sense of self identify and so know when they are in someone else's environment. Again, we are cluless. We think all the world is open to and for us and dont fully understand our disintegration from self and dependence on other and without.
The UK has changed and is changing every day. The London you once knew is one I recognise as Nigerian but I too will leave as that "golden era" has gone. You said you would like your children to be educated in the UK........I suggest you speak to your friends with kids. I will say no more
Hello Lamide! I was just recommended this video and enjoy the content so far. Will you be doing any videos on investing in real estate in another country; the process; how to keep track of the work if you reside in another country; etc.?
Thank you for your video! I have an offer for an Off-cycle at a BB (Top 2) in Dubai. Do you think it's a good idea to move back to London after the internship? or if I'm given an offer, to stay there up to the associate level then move out ? Thanks in advance for your insights.
Very thoughtful. I’m totally looking forward to coming and living there part-time. On the whole sex worker thing….I have actually been presumed to be one while actually waiting for an Uber while living overseas. I totally agree with what you said, not everyone’s experience, but it definitely does happen 😂
Hi Lámidé. I’m from the south west of England and i’m currently a mortgage broker but on the side I’m taking my R0 exams for financial advising. I noticed you mentioned the lack of space in terms of roles and progression within the financial sector; with that in mind do you often find that roles can be offered by companies with training along side or would it be a case of already being set up and experienced in the role already?
Personally I’d recommend training where you are, however the real estate market is booming here, I should’ve mentioned that in the video. There’s a lot more roles and opportunities available when it comes to real estate
Lovely video, I’m in construction how do I get a job out there? I know the default answer is just search on line but reality sometimes different. What’s your view on this?
Hi Lamide, your video was great, I'll probably be moving soon and was wondering whether you think 35,000 aed per month decent enough, would likely have a COL slightly lower than yours but it was refreshing to see a londoner share their experiences in detail!
I enjoyed my holidays in Dubai and considered the prospect of seeing what it's like to move there. If I lived in Dubai, I'd be back every year for Carnival.
love the vid as always! Curious re whether you get paid in AED/USD. I’ve heard different companies do different currencies. And do you feel it impacts your UK-based outgoings/investments? xx
Paid in AED, perhaps people paid in USD are on shorter term contracts? I still earn in GBP as well from other income streams so doesn’t affect me in that way xx
I would say visit first, don't get caught on the hype etc. You probably should weigh your pros and cons. As being an American, I don't think I can do it. I enjoy the luxuries we have here etc.
Very hard to find a job in Dubai nowadays so I wouldn’t bother trying especially if you have a weak passport .. there is no such thing as minimum wage in Dubai there are very limited opportunities and for specific ethnicities, so don’t bother trying and if you do, don’t get your hopes up.
This is a very negative mindset and sounds like a lot of projection, no one’s saying it will be easy but there are people moving here everyday from different backgrounds and ethnicities
As UK resident moving to Dubai, how does your banking work? Can I use my UK accounts in Dubai? Are there specific accounts depending on your visa type?
You need a visa to open a Dubai based bank account which is better if you’re staying long term, otherwise I’d recommend using a card like Monzo that doesn’t charge much to pay overseas
Thanks for sharing your story, it takes TIME & WILLPOWER to share this side of Dubai, my patent root. I’ll indulge you to share less of your income because the internet travels as fast as the Enfranchise where you are currently employed. Love to you ~Dir. DR. Jerusalem Lung
I remember that initally you were not to keen on living by yourself. How has your perspective on living by yourself changed? Also do you have any general advise for people who plan to live alone.
Hmmm perhaps I can answer this in another video to go more in depth but it’s actually fine tbh. It can feel a bit lonely at first but then you adjust, I think it’s a good experience for your confidence and self-reliance. Now that I’ve left, I find it a lot harder when I’m at home because I’m so used to having things my way however I still wouldn’t rush to live out alone. Pro tip is if you have any apprehension about living alone done get a super big space, somewhere of good size and cosy is a good way to start!

10:28 you absouletly *can* let your residential property in the UK "with ease" for those that are unaware, you can rent a spare bedroom to a lodger *tax free* up to £7,000 per annum. secondly, by filling a one page form literally any high street bank will grant you a Consent To Lease which allows you to rent your entire home without switching your mortgage. its also 100% legal.
You’ve kind of proved my point there is a lot more leaps to jump through in comparison to other countries where you can literally just get up and go Consent to let is only supposed to be done for temporary purposes if you’re relocating abroad for an extended period of time you technically should not be using it Not all lenders allow consent to let and also if you’ve used a scheme like Help to Buy you won’t be able to Also London has a 90 day cap on listing your property on AirBnB, so if you want flexibility it’s a lot more difficult than other countries which is my point. I’m not saying it’s impossible it just has a lot more barriers than other places, speaking from personal experience
I saw Dubai for what it was. I remember back in the 90’s, a desolate desert building structures. Why? I don’t enjoy extreme hot weather. A Muslim county with all its extremes customs and laws? No thank you.
Dubai salary is lower than London for sure. If you are a VP in London making 100k a year, you get a VP job in Dubai, they won’t pay you the equivalent of £100k, they will just pay you a bit more than your post tax take home pay in London. You do take home everything but the total amount is less the London
