    re - only go down the entertainment industry route if you can see no other life path for yourself.
    this is what's hard for me. I can imagine 100000 life paths & i love the balance of slower living + seeing my friends and family. & truthfully this is what is stopping me from diving fully in to film. i don't know if a healthy balance could ever exist. but i also can't imagine a life without film.

    As an aspiring writer director with no college experience in directing or writing, I found this video to be highly informative, yet highly intimidating at the same time. I should really go back to art school bc this video put into perspective how I’m missing out on so much disciplinary knowledge and so many opportunities simply bc I’m not enrolled…

    Somehow gaining a chance without experiences became like that - you pay for the experience(like working without pay) or sacrifice some time to get a job. I like the way you mentioning it wss possible for you but also warn others if the case is different plus also the privilege part. Cause some people think everything is about effort, but everyone's resource vary right. Your honest sharing would be found by people who need some real life information! :) really appreciate how you always try to reflect your own thoughts to your videos!!!! Happy new year Joelle!!

    To be clear here, even if you are going the less freelance creative route of film or TV development, you will likely be an assistant for 5-7 years on 20-25/hour and its a crap shoot of luck to get promoted, and to even find a position that aligns with your taste/interests and has a supportive boss, and a company that has room for growth. Once you get a promotion, coordinator and manager levels are still barely liveable salaries from 60k-80/90 unless you are 1 in a million who landed at the only place that pays = Netflix. But also has no job security since they believe in aggresive evaluations and most only last 2 years max. Studios/streamers/networks are highly competitive no matter how much experience you have so chances are not good of getting in. The town is based on who you know and not what experience you have, so networking is critical. Oh and if you want to go any corporate or studio route they usually all want you to have a year of expeirence at an agency or management company. Also majority of the jobs go through the reps via internal job posts, there are also some secret job boards, so the positions are usually filled before being posted online. I hate that no one says this to students!

      As a 25 year old who still doesn't really know what I wanna do in life but recently am interested in this sort of career, you have plenty of time! Just keep looking, do any courses where you have the time, keep educating yourself and putting yourself out there and you will be found. I am only just starting to research now, also the comment above me^ that's awesome! You're still so young, and you will be 26 whether you finish the course or not so you may aswell go for it in my opinion 😊 its never too late.

    Hey im an upcoming college freshman and this has been super useful. I know i want to work in entertainment but not exactly WHAT. Right now, im planning on majoring in econ and psych to work in the corporate area of entertainment as a stepping stone since i was told it is much more stable and that media majors dont get hired easily anymore 😭 im praying i don't get burnt out since im not super duper interested in psych and econ, but my uni doesn't offer media programs so... Im just planning on doing extracurriculars and clubs for film and tv as you did + freelance on the side

    I landed my first gig by chance, and it happened to be a feature film with a decent budget and a few household names. I showed up for background and mentioned I had an interest in being a PA. Lo and behold, they needed someone and chose me since I had already been on set a few days and was familiar. The same crew is doing another feature in a few weeks at the same location. They offered me crafty! I feel like I am getting my foot in. My only issue is I live in a state not known for having a large film community. Any tips for scoring jobs in areas like mine? There’s work, just not a lot of it.

    I’m graduating w no internships and I’m also in the south. Idk what to do aghh. I studied media production and have an interest in writing but I know any entertainment experience is necessary. Im open to anything but am trying to save and look for recent grad programs I could apply for soon. I’m feeling really behind and idk what to do. Not sure if I should focus on scripts and get a job in another industry or what aghh. Also, if my portfolio is just class projects and they feel a bit rough, should I still link them on a website?

    • @joelleolol
      @joelleolol  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hm I'm not an expert and can only speak from my experience, but don't feel behind! I only got my entertainment job right before graduating and a lot of entertainment hiring is on a tight timeline so they need you to start ASAP, not months out from your offer. For portfolio, I'd say depends on the job you want. you likely won't be applying to be a film director or cinematographer right out of college, so imo portfolio at least shows you have vision and have something to demonstrate how committed you are to entertainment (even if it's not amazing - no one expects it to be)

      @@joelleolol ty! I think I’ll refine and show the work I currently have, get a for now job, try to volunteer and intern at media companies or stations near me then save up and move to a larger city. Hopefully that’ll help me resume/experience-wise and I’ll def make the portfolio site! Ty!

    Hey Joelle I'm interested at the nexus of Tech+Entreprenuerhship+environment+film+modelling. Phew! thts a lot I got offer in UCL BASc program - 3yr kind similar to lib arts(but can't really change major in b/w). Your channel is one of the reasons I applied to Dartmouth. I m also expecting a positive decision from Dartmouth as a transfer applicant(will be entering 2nd year)
    Do you think London would provide a better horizon to seek more oppurtunities when compared to New Hamsphire? since even if one had to pursue large internships from Dart they need to move to other places. The thing is in UK you can pursue internship mostly only during summer so like 3 summers = 3 intenrships(lets say). But do you think D plan provides oppurtunity to fit in more? Though D-plan is flexible does the short terms due to quarter systems often leave students burnt out that they can't really make use of off terms ?
    For the distribution requirements, do you feel like they were helpful or do you feel like you did'nt really see a point in completing a course which doesn't really fit your major?
    Will there be a significant difference in feasibility of availing oppurtunities between areas such as New Hamsphire in US vs London in UK. Is that difference between rural and urban areas significant which led you to pick uni in an rural area?
    What would you do if you were in this situation
