Do yourself a favor, put about twice that amount of putty around the drain, whatever squeezes out, put it back in the putty container. Too little putty and water will be leaking around the drain (into your walls if it's upstairs).

Clean behind the overflow, clean the drain area as well. Other then that your method works.

What happens if the threaded PVC female part is missing from your bathtub where the drain stopper screws into?

It should be there, that is a common installation. Never seen PVC drain without thread.

How do you know if it's tight enough when putting in the new stopper?

it should compress rubber gasket. usually it is pretty tight. I wish i can explain it better.

just an adaptor for the different size drain pipes. However, I have never come across that size.

Maybe buy a replacement plunger of the same model or replace the whole thing? The second option is probably going to be cheaper, easier, and quicker.

Have to screw it in all the way so rubber gasket is compressed, otherwise it will leak

That's the reason we need to replace ours. The drain spoke broke somehow so the stopper no longer stays in place... We had the stomper kind and my son thought it was hilarious to stomp it open and close a thousand times
