Jaguar F Type P450 - Why is there no V6 ?!

  • Updating the Jaguar F Type was a tricky task. Always a beautiful car but can the new car be even more beautiful. Maybe the most interesting thing to look at is the new engine line up as there is one variant missing...the V6 !
Thanks to Harwoods Jaguar Chichester for letting me experience their demonstrator the F Type P450, a 5.0L V8 with 444 horsepower. The other question I need to ask is 'will the new F Type sound like an F Type should ?

I saw your Jag V6 video 2 years ago. I must have watched it dozens of times. I felt your joy with every snap, crackle and pop. So, I bought one. A muted F Type V8 and no V6... oh dear!

Yes, a QUIET car, while still stylish aggressive fun and dynamic, is indeed music to the ears. So this one can stay on the shopping option list.

Exterior styling-wise they've nailed it with this facelift to my eyes. In fact it's the only good looking current Jaguar on sale. Sounds good as well by 2020 standards.
I rather like this. Two or three years down the road, when the first owner has had all the problems fixed, whilst paying the bulk of the depreciation for the privilege, it would be well worth a look.
    Nice review Pete 👍

I've had 3 Ftypes over last 6 years. Only issues were Oxygen sensors on Catalyst convertor SVR arising from not using the car enough. Once 2.0L came out i think this devalued their premium car. I like new front but don't know why they didn't do more on back. I think a new SVR is coming.

    That’s a really great video ped .
    I daily a 2003 Jaguar S-Type R twin screw 500 hp. Yes 500.
Today I drove the 2021 Jaguar F-Type dynamic P450 . And you are spot on in your descriptions. Certainly lacking in sound though what sounded it had was gorgeous. Styling super impressive agility super impressive breaking super impressive. Colour beautiful GP blue. One day old. An absolute honour to have driven it.
I noticed a little bit more talk than my STR . But not a lot more. Certainly a bit of transmission and handling and breaking. . but it didn’t make the STR feel slow just less safe .
Now I have driven a 515 hp XKR and an FType S 5.0 I think both of these had more torque then the
P450. I think it’s amazing that I can even still compare the power of my 2003 Jaguar super sedan to this 2021 super GT. I will say this though that P450 Is the nicest car I have ever driven. Absolutely stunning.

Great review Pete. As a previous owner of a 535ps V8 the new exhaust is fine for me. The old V8 used to wake up with a start "flare" that made me hated in my street when going off to work at 6 am. The new front styling is bang on trend as you say looks very much like a I-Pace theme (no bad thing). Looking forward to your review of the P575 model - you WILL need the AWD in that !

Good evening PP, not seen one in person yet, but styling looks good. I do think it looks good with the "de-chromed" badges and trim.
Its always hard to capture how good or bad the exhaust sound is on film, but I must say that i don't think it sounds to bad, especially with all of the regulations that they have to abide by now. Really doesn't sound to bad on the fly by's.
Looking forward to seeing your Tesla model Y 👍😉

Good content, in the past had trouble with Turbos locking up, partly by where manufactures mount them next to engine (as opposed to risers up high ...not to show off to keep them cooler next to Heat extractor hoods, or Boot), which defeats the purpose of the intercooler. Also, wouldn't buy a Jaguar without the reliable V8 5.0, and the V6 has actually been the 5.0 V8 with 6 cylinder heads and the last too camed pistons are stationary hidden under the windscreen, Thanks for sharing F-Type SVR is also my favorite and most like would be the one would buy. Was close to buying one and found out they 're only automatic.. miss the 6 speed manual transmission. The only reason have the PDK not because a Valet at the Hotel Burned for 10 minutes my Tires, Clutch, and Engine trying to get my Lotus Elise up the Parking Lot Ramp... the engine alone was $16,000, and so didn't repair it, and wound buying the 2016 Mustang.

Peter, I think that it’s about time you put an F-Type on the Ped fleet. The Tesla won’t be along for ages so there is a free space in the barn.
If not an actual purchase can’t you wangle a long term car from Jaguar.
I love the colour and spec of this particular car.

Great vid Mr P - I'm afraid it's the sign of the times especially when noise capable speed cameras come a long - I'd love to have a F-Type V6 coupe it sounded great and had enough power on uk roads and that's the trouble with mega BHP cars i.e 2 seconds on the throttle and kiss goodbye to your license , much rather have a car that's fun to drive in everyday reality, oh well it's only a pipe dream for me in any case but nice to see a good honest viewpoint so well done from me :-)

I’m not convinced by the front end yet...maybe it’s a bit more mature just like the toned down exhaust! I think the interior still looks great as it has a certain style and quirkiness of it’s own, and the media system has Apple CarPlay etc...so is still looking and functioning as well as most. You should revisit the 2.0L, as it actually sounds quite good in it’s own way and is plenty fast enough for UK roads! You can review mine if you like???👍🏻

Well...I think it sounds like a very good car indeed! I like that it is not angry, hard, sharp...most of which you suffer rather than enjoy..a softer approach is faster as the abilities are far more accessible more of the time. My Mercedes SL is always described as soft and only good as a grand tourer...but it is able to impress far more in a quiet understated way....angry aggressive is a popular choice but reality is usability. I’m sure I would like one...but it is getting old inside...it is looking like a car you buy at 12 months old for £40,000 and that is when it works best. Thank you Peter..another good review!! Stay safe...get a 5.0l convertible when you are 60!!! 😀😀😀😀😀Richard.

Looking at replacing my BMW M4 convertible after previously owning an SLK55. I miss the V8 sound track from the SLK and the BMW is all about pops and bangs but quite jerky with the twin turbo! Was considering the V6 400 Jag but really like the modern look of the new model. Always went for the hardtop convertibles but may have to revert back to a soft top!! Only other option would have been an SL Mercedes. I suspect i will go for the P450 convertible, more modern take, V8 soundtrack and reasonable MPG. Thanks, this has been a very useful Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always also lusted after an F-Type. Drove one loved it. Then drove a Porsche 911, so for the same money you get a 991.1 targa, more practical, better fuel consumption average 31 mpg (beans - 24mpg, long run 37mpg) depreciation almost zero now. The build quality is in a different league and it sounds might fine with a normally aspirated engine. Great video again Pete!

Nice video, Pete. I rather like the rear end (how cool would it be to have the logo/lettering mirrored so it would look the right way round when the wing popped and you looked in the rear view?). It sounds great, considering the hoops they have to jump through these days (a bit more "pop and crackle" would be nice). Obviously drives/handles great. I agree about the interior, "timeless Jag" apart from the tech - graft a Mercedes infotainment/dash to it? (Can't believe infotainment is a proper word now!).

Peter, I think you would change your opinion on the F type if you drove it from your home to Gissy. Having a loan 4 pot for two days I rang up and asked them to collect it again after one day.
I had hoped it would have come close to a much loved nearly final edition XK which I had for around two and a half years. A replacement for the XK it certainly is not being noisy, jarring suspension and hard seats proved a no go for me. To put it into perspective I drove my XK from GISSY to Holyhead, ferry crossing to ROI and then north to my home in Norn Iron. Arriving home I felt I could have made the return journey the next day as the XK was a joy to own. I know the F type is targeting a different age group but if any of your younger subs is thinking of getting one I would suggest getting a pair of ear defenders as well.

Used to be rather pessimistic about the new face of F-Type, but the more I see the pictures the more it grows on me. Not quite as jaw-dropping as the original F-Type, but still a damn good-looking one. I really want the F-Type R Black Pack in Sorrento Yellow or Sunset Gold.

Not too dissimilar to the latest Vantage from the front and the rear flared arches. Unlike the Aston the F Type tries to appeal to a broader spread of buyers giving more of us a chance of ownership. Losing the V6 is a shame, most of its competitors will be powdered by 6 cylinder engines. This V8 doesn't sound like a V8 should, its a little bit plastic as though the sound engineers have tried too hard to make it sound better but come up against the brick wall of NVH rules.

I've got an Ftype V6s convertible and Ive had it now for 3 years. I still love driving it and I still always take the long way home. I'm in the market for something else now so Ive been looking at Bentley, Aston and even Ferrari, but you have made me think that maybe another FType might be the way to go. Perhaps a test drive is in order.

Still a very attractive car with the subtle styling tweaks. Aside of losing the V6, Jaguar are clearly adopting an “if it ain’t broken...” philosophy. Not that they are direct competitors per se, but I’d love to see you review the Nissan GT-R. All the best Pete.

The F type is a great car and the P450 is certainly a solid package offering more than adequate performance. I really liked the old V6 engine. I felt it had enough power at 380bhp, a great sound track, and the twin centre exhaust looked brutal and less fussy than the four pipe rear of the V8s.

Tata struggle today in the current market for quality tech but they have done a great job cleaning this car up, the underlying architecture in jaguar is old, very old, but it's worth a buy just for the looks. Compared to the current aston, it's better looking looking car and better value.

It`s a nice, Jag my boss years ago had an F type and when he went home I used to ask him to rev it a bit before he went off, and It definitely rasped and sounded better than that one you just drove nice though it looks, Be honest Pete you will have to get the other one to compare again, I suppose if the sound matters that much then perhaps you don`t buy this model and get a rortier of something else maybe A**** M*****ish!!!!!

I love my V6 400 Sport. Sounds immense! I saw a new coupe at my local dealer today and I'm still underwhelmed by the new design. It's no longer curvy & gorgeous. It's just... well... meh. Skinny headlights are so generic these days. The lines over the bonnet have gone. Front air intakes are too fussy. Rear end has too many angles, and no curve appeal. IMHO.

Guess they're saving the big v8 noise for the SVR. Were it not for a lack of luggage space, this junior V8 might be a good GT. I'd still go for the 4l caynan/boxter GTS for their better practicality, drive and resale values.

2021 Noise and EU Regs, not really JLR's fault. Sad to see (hear) the mighty roar has been clipped somewhat. BRG looks nice on this body.

I’ve had the V6 380, 400 AWD Sport and V8 SVR. To me SVR 4WD was by far the best and was not a handful in any way. It didn’t wheel spin and was stable under acceleration and was far better than my present AM DB11. Like the new front end but very disappointed that the back hasn’t been changed more than just the lights. After 2 years with the spoiler I hated it so glad they’ve deleted it. Inside doesn’t appear changed other than infotainment which is disappointing. In my SVR I averaged over 30mpg on some medium driving conditions days on a long trip to Portugal which was very surprising. The biggest downside to me is the design hasn’t changed enough for me to buy another and they could have done so much more to upgrade the interior quality . For anyone buying one go for a low mileage 1 year old SVR and save the massive depreciation on a new one.

If have a 2015 V6 S and I love the look much more than this car. Head-on the redesign looks like an Audi or even a Mustang, the only thing I like is that they removed the crossbar on the grill.
