Love my Jags. Can't beat the super V8 in any of them. I'd have the F type all day over a 911. The XJRs and XKRs are absolute bargains. I did 150k miles in my old XJR. Couldn't bring myself to sell it. Wonderful.
Glad you got an SVR to test buddy, I miss mine on these Winter days. SVR's did not have engine covers, due to the increased output of the engine from running more aggressive software the engine was running hot in Jaguar's testing, removal of the engine cover improved temperatures by 10c, hence it got removed from all SVR's and is also something tuners advice to those tuning their S and R models. Also remember the other great party piece of all the AWD cars is the mode selector, dynamic will attempt to push 90% RWD and move power forward as required, normal is 70/30 split and snow / wet mode is pretty much 50/50 which gives it a much more planted feel in poor conditions. I loved my blue coupe SVR and loved its obnoxious exhaust with it being a 2016 model year and remote start was handy for Winter days along with the Winter pack so heated front screen and heated wheel. :)
My thoughts exactly. I bought a top specced brand new bright red F-Type SVR convertible 2 years ago, and my wife and I have driven through France to Monaco the last two years for the yacht show (where we host a party for clients). Fantastic car for the trip, and it gets plenty of favourable attention, including from the concierge at the Hermitage Hotel in Monaco, who sees plenty of to supercars. No regrets!
Lovely review James. I`m undecided as to what i would buy as a run around and toy but the SVR is up there. What i really like about your vids is your natural charm and ability to keep it real. Keep up the fascinating journey.
My v6 is tuned to 550hp....495ft lbs....and gets abotu 32mpg on the highway...tuned tcu too. Amazing cars these F types. Thank you to anyone on the net reading this who helped make it....amazingly wonderful car.
I had the same impression when I drove the F type v8. I didn't think I would like it, and I loved it. Such character, drama, and actually handles well and comfortable. I was shocked. It's an amazing engineering accomplishment.
Hello James, watching the channel since sometime and enjoying it. I drive an F-type v8s convertible with the 495hp engine(they only made it for the first year). Couple of points: The cover in the engine bay missing is a SVR thing. The leather quality of F-type is kinda rubbish. Mine has been rubbing off where the belt rests. You can turn of the screen and you can open the top with just the ignition on. Engine doesn't need to be on. But I still love the car and prefer it over a 911. My F-type is still two wheel drive, though I have no issues with using the power. I think it's actually better in 2wd. Also less heavy
@@Dave.S.TT600 I probably will get the 4.0 version, the power is down a little but it's still 370 HP compared to 400 HP with the 4.2 litre version. They look much nicer and the interior is much nicer as well. I think they give the E-Type a run for it's money in the looks departement.
James, For similar reasons to yourself when I test drove a 2015 F TYPE R Coupe about 18 months a go and did not particularly like it and decided not to buy it. It was because of ride too hard ALL the time and too shouty ALL the time. So bought the XKR 75 Coupe that you review tested this week when we met up. On this F Type very interesting that it seems from this test drive review that these two problem areas would seem to have been addressed. Just the lack of touring storage space would perhaps remain as a problem for me. Once again may thanks for all your brilliant and interesting reviews.
Drilled and slotted brake rotors are worse in terms of raw stopping power and strength than a basic one, with a basic rotor you have more surface area for the brake pads to grab onto and less structural weak points. Drilled rotors are good at venting heat but all the missing metal gives multiple points for cracks to develop and an easier route for those cracks to spread. Slotted rotors are best for clearing muck away from the surface of the rotor but the downside is that there is less surface area for the pad to grab, it's similar to the trade-off between slicks and grooved tyres. I agree that for the looks they should have been a bit more interesting though, my guess for why they went for this design is more likely to do with availability than design, if you check the part numbers they're probably the same as those from a Range Rover.
Strange how most reviews say that the V6 is the 'sweet spot' in the range with an equally , albeit different , sound & more usable power than the V8 , apparently the 4 cylinder has the best handling of all due to less weight upfront. The coupe is widely regarded as one of the most stylish cars on the road , looks fantastic in grey & the Meridian sound system is usually really good in most JLR vehicles , especially positve feedback in Range Rovers & Jag I-pace !
The Meridian system in a Range Rover is totally different to the one in the F Type, that I know. As regards the V6, it is a horrible engine and the complaints about usable power came from the days when the F Type was only RWD
I had the V6S and it was a great car, and sometimes I miss it. Heated steering wheel? Lovely. I found it lacked some overall road feel though. Almost felt a bit too light most of the time, and I never felt completely in control. I am now back in a manual Vantage and it’s a much better driver’s car. They’re both lovely, and I considered a V8S convertible... but went for another Aston in the end.
Meridian Surround badges would be the top of the range 770W system, this is the next one down at just 380W. I don’t know how much better that one is...
@@jamesmosley1549 my only complaint with build quality was the vents used to creak when rising out of the dash in the centre. Other than that it was great. No complaints. I did love the car.
Always better getting second hand. Stuff buying new let someone who can afford it take the hit I say. Can get some top used cars and not suffer the massive loss
This has been a brilliant week, but for me the all out value of an xk just takes it. All special cars, xj is also insane car for the money, but georgous looks, insane noise and reasonable practicality just makes me lust for one
Looks like you're always driving on the right hand side of the road lol. Thats one beautiful car, good to know the V6 Jag F-type isn't that good, lots on sale for 30k and under, looked tempting.
Spent a good amount of time in both a V6S and an SVR. Whilst the V6 was fast, it was almost too smooth an engine to make you feel like you were making progress (until you looked down at the speedo). The SVR was on another planet in fairness (although i think it was a 16 or 17 plate so not the latest one) but i guess it should be for £120k
My favourite would be the XE with an economical petrol engine. I struggle to enjoy big heavy sports cars like the F type. If I want to have fun I'll get in my VX220. The XE sounds like a good compromise for a daily driver but yes, I would like 40mpg and will make do with 200bhp just fine.
regarding brakes as i understand it. steel brakes got great initial bite and if you have good pads on they're good enough and they don't really fade as much. if you drill them you can have stress cracks because of the constant heating and cooling. a good compromise is grooving them. carbon ceramics are great once you heat them up and you're not going to heat them up on the street. i hope i've made it a bit clearer for you.
I love the SVR, I noticed this is a 68 plate, does anyone know when the new legislation was implemented as the original SVRs sounded amazing! I have a feeling 17 plates was the last great F Types re sound? Does anyone know any actual facts on GPF filters on f types
The Jag is stunning. The Porsche is nice...but it looks like just another Porsche. Perhaps because I have been seeing Porsches my entire life,. they all run together. Then there is the sound of that engine. We all know how good a Porsche is, but I want the Jag.
Please try and find a dry day to do your reviews:-] What might be some intresting content:- buy a good quality Excel and then through Lotus Bits spec the car up 1/ Big Brake kit. 2/ Upgrade the engine to the highest specification. 3/ fuel injection conversion. 4/ the full suspension convesion. Agree and less chance of any cracking. JLR have obviously done their durability sign-off with solid discs - which will be harder than 95% of the population - so you shouldn't be concerned.
Unfortunately, you haven’t convinced me to trade up from an F-Type R to an SVR for another $25k. I love my 2016 F-Type R. It’s a rare occasion that I can take it to its limits anywhere I drive, including back country roads in North Carolina (sort of like “A-” roads compared to “B” roads in England). I’ve got 50k miles on it and feel it will easily go to 150k. So, the good news is that I don’t need to make any decisions until then.
Bit of a harsh take on the infotainment, however fashionable it is to have a pop at JLR infotainment. Turn the screen off by selecting the settings button and below screen brightness it’s there. The sat nav is one of the best I’ve used, because with a SIM card in there it’ll take into account, and display, current traffic levels. So your ETA is accurate, and you can email or sms your ETA to someone, then set the system to automatically provide an update to that contact if you’re going to be 5 or 10 minutes late. To start jabbing around on the screen randomly then get annoyed that the radio comes on really is the height of looking to be grumpy. A sim does make it better, mine never has connectivity issues, but you do need to make sure you have all of the over the air updates to the software - again, very clever you can do that. You also can download new maps to a USB and upload it to the car yourself, no need to wait for a dealer visit or worse - pay for it!! Just sayin 👍🏼
I daily drive an P400 AWD coupe, as its great in snow/ice as well as summer. Picked it up ~ 1 1/2 years old at almost 55% MSRP! The 575bhp V8 would have been a bit too wild for the steep mountains here. ( i'm in the USA )
Looking for a used one of these might I recommend the V8s I believe it only came out in 2014 and 2015 but it is an awesome car with all the horsepower and sound that made these famous also it's a rear wheel drive car so you can have a lot of fun and here in the US I just bought a 2014 for under $30,000 with less than 60,000 miles on it. You can't be at that not to mention it was one owner car in an Immaculate condition
one of these was being tested at our university facility and they froze it and than took it on the autobahn to find out the brakes dont work when chilled to -40C and smashed it in a Hauling truck. So yeah, keep that in mind if you want to buy one and you live on the north pole.
The F-Type cab models are beautiful. No argument there. However, if you’re serious about touring you must go with the coupe. The miniscule trunk in the F-Type cab is a joke that immediately flags you as a poser, (especially to anyone who owns an F-Type Coupe). I’m a SCUBA diver, and I get all my dive gear and a travel bag in my coupe boot, which includes two oversized steel 120 cubic foot diving tanks that are 50% larger than standard tanks. Can’t to that in a in an F-Type cab, or a 911 for that matter.
Too turn the JLR info screen. Press the settings. (Two gears) then you with see next to the brightness a on off button. Press that the screen turns black tap to remake.
I love the newer Jags but I find that all have overly quick accelerator and brake pedals. I find the brake pedal in my friends 2015 XF S/C V6 to be very tricky to modulate. The same was true in my 2011 XJ S/C. The S/C V8 is great, though. I know that it’s a bit old school, but it really gives the cars a special feeling.
My favourite is the XJ Super. The Limo comes in a pretty close second (because of amazing value for money, not because i want it). Older Jags are cool :)
The SVR takes it, I have a preference for the styling of the coupe version, I'm not a convertible guy as I've gone pass my convertible midlife drama. All the same nice car and good review.
I much prefer a coupe F Type, just looks the best out of any cars on the road, also the super stiff structure of the car makes it a stunningly capable sportscar
Not for me but a cracking car all the same. I’ve had a little go in a F Type, obviously prefer without spoiler and roof down. Quick car as well. Obviously my favourite 👍 Shame Jaguar can’t recreate the hype which was achieved by the E Type
A friend of mine brought a Porsche 922. Nice car but its been back in the garage under warranty more than on the road. He is very disappointed, especially after the faultless driving he had with his 911. Maybe he should look at this beast.
How an earth can you notmlove a f type james ? Even a v6 one is a beautiful machine, hugely charismatic, wonderful to drive and great build quality. It makes a 911 look so unbelievably dull. I find your views a bit weird sometimes!
Engine is meant to look like that. To switch screen off click settings and look for the symbol like a TV remote for on/off If it says it’s offline then it needs another 50p in the meter! Sat Nav works fantastically, accounts for traffic in its estimations, directions are clear. My DB11 (Merc software) is way less accurate and not easy to use in comparison...
Very informative video, glad I stumbled upon it. I'm looking a year ahead at what car to upgrade too and this is one of the cars on my list. Would you choose it over an R8 v10 first gen (either going manual or S tronic), Maserati Gran Turismo, Lexus LC500, Merc C63S AMG or Cayman GT4 (1st gen). Maybe the Evora too but not sure.
@@StronthPL Well funnily enough, after I made this comment, Corona virus happened so nothing yet. I'm actually leaning more towards the R8 GT or Cayman GT4.
I think it should be compared - if possible - to an AMG GT or AMG GT Roadster. That would be really interesting because of the similar layout of the cars.
Regarding the gauges. They should have used the same indication method for both the fuel and coolant. Fuel is an expanding circular bar, coolant is an arrow pointer, bad design.
Nice to see a car review channel that doesn’t act all hyperactive and call everyone bro

To turn off infotainment screen push the power button on the volume control
Definitely the F-Type but I’ve always fancied an XKR
If I was getting an F-type, I'd get the new facelift version. It looks so low and streamlined compared to this, and I don't know how they did it.
Makes top gear look stupid keep rocking bud great videos as all ways 👍 👏
The XKRS is such a nicer looking car and in my opinion more Jaag.
What is wrong with the Meridian system? 🤣 had it in my XE S and don't remember there being any issues with it at all?
Not for me but a cracking car all the same. I’ve had a little go in a F Type, obviously prefer without spoiler and roof down. Quick car as well.
Obviously my favourite 👍
Shame Jaguar can’t recreate the hype which was achieved by the E Type
I would love it too, but it looks so big. Almost like an SUV. Even so, it looks good.
To have a two-zone acc in such a small cabine is always hilarious.
A friend of mine brought a Porsche 922. Nice car but its been back in the garage under warranty more than on the road. He is very disappointed, especially after the faultless driving he had with his 911. Maybe he should look at this beast.
My favourite is the F type.... best looking car since the E type.
You do know that that SVR is like double the price of the V6 manual right?
With the new f type coming out, i might just have to get one of these older ones..
Yes, they have ruined the front end so get the previous facelift version as it's now a modern day classic 😆
Yup. True. The new face lifted model looks a bit bland and generic. Go for the older F types.
How an earth can you notmlove a f type james ? Even a v6 one is a beautiful machine, hugely charismatic, wonderful to drive and great build quality. It makes a 911 look so unbelievably dull. I find your views a bit weird sometimes!
I'm quite convinced nothing will make him happy. Every review is just moan, moan, moan.
True
He is getting older.
Engine is meant to look like that.
To switch screen off click settings and look for the symbol like a TV remote for on/off
If it says it’s offline then it needs another 50p in the meter!
Sat Nav works fantastically, accounts for traffic in its estimations, directions are clear. My DB11 (Merc software) is way less accurate and not easy to use in comparison...
How do you find the DB11 otherwise?
Regulations? I know I’ve heard y’all talk about a particulate filter, same deal?
Yes and i believe there may have also been some "noise polution" regulations as well. 🙄
26 mpG at 42mph i see u fail to mention that the min is 40 mph where they do that at surley not in the usa
Harpreet06 What do you choose?
@@StronthPL Well funnily enough, after I made this comment, Corona virus happened so nothing yet. I'm actually leaning more towards the R8 GT or Cayman GT4.
Have they fixed the dodgy rusty steel?
How reliable are these ? Both V6 & V8s have been around for ages but what are the issues ?
"I was a bit upset that they were going to send me a convertible", first world problems eh? lolol
Trying to decide between a XKR and an F Type, your opinion would be appreciated.
Cruiser = XK
Sporty car = F Type
To my knowledge, non of the 575hp cars have an engine cover. It's for maximum cooling iirc
Know what you mean about that temperature gauge. Not sure why it couldn't just replicate the fuel gauge. Strange
Sound speaker system is it good?
Love the svr... Shame the exhaust regulations have muted it a tad
More than a tad, unfortunately.
