BMW M2 CS Vs Jaguar F-Type - Road and Track Review with Tiff Needell

- The BMW M2 has been one of the most popular cars to come from the BMW M division for a while now. Appealing to the masses and in its short life we have already seen a number of iterations. Starting with the original M2 that is often referred to as the OG M2, shortly followed by the LCI which seen a fresher looking dash and other minor tweaks. Then we had the M2 Competition which was arguably a huge step up in many areas with the introduction of the S55 engine, seats, M driver modes etc and now to finish off the series, the new BMW M2 CS.
The BMW M2 CS comes in at a £73,000 (just over £80,000 as tested) which is quite a leap up from the M2 Competition, so what do you get for the extra money, and what is it competing against? The M2 CS holds the same S55 engine producing the same amount of torque, but the power is up from 410hp to 450hp. The car comes as standard with a carbon fibre roof, bonnet as well as a lovely front splitter and rear diffuser. Oh and then there is the lighter weight forged alloys! Also, for the first time on an M2 from the factory, electronically adjustable dampers have been fitted allowing you to choose between comfort, sport and sport plus settings. With this in mind the logical comparison we thought was the Cayman GT4, however being able to soften the suspension could it also compete against something a little less track and a little more GT?
Yes we decided to put it up against the new Jaguar F-Type P450. With their latest design, and their decision to drop the V6 variant from the range, they introduced the new P450. Essentially it has the same 5.0l V8 Supercharged engine as the P575, just de-tuned to, you guessed it, 450hp. The car as tested was just over £80,000 so already some similarities between the two. Although this is where it ended. The P450 is an 8 speed auto vs the Manual of the CS (DCT is available), and the P450 we had was specced as AWD but it is available in a RWD variant.
We decided to put both cars to the test on the road and track, check out the video to see how Paul and Tiff got on.

As a 40+ year old, tiff was the first proper drifting journalist/driver that I would watch on tv. His ability to drive a car way beyond its limit and chat like your having beers down the pub is legendary!

@@MrVroom1 Does the new one not have a OPF/filter in the exhaust due to emissions regs? This in my head would surely make the older one the louder and more exciting exhaust note.
@@MrVroom1 your opinion. More supporting opinions would disagree with you. Jaguar have retuned it. The older one had WAY more pops, bangs, gurgles. Was mental. This clearly isn't.

When the BMW M2 Competition came out, I think BMW kinda ruined the appeal of the F80 series M4. Then this CS comes out, and I reckon you'd be a bit stupid to consider the old M4. This new one is tbc... but if the M3 gets a touring model, I'm all in!
Like if you are here for Tiff. Love this man and the original Top Gear boys! Can't stand others on TH-cam who are just concerned with "Insta flexing" they possess no skill unlike Tiff who's a genuine F1 driver and not a paid driver either

I don’t understand BMW’s obsession with it. People have been moaning about this for years. Yet someone at BMW keeps insisting on it. WHYYY.
I actually like it, I had the regular one on my M2 and it's always felt to much thin for me, replaced it with the V2 and I am an happy guy. I do have to note that I can easily hold a basketball with the palm of my hand.

Great review. Where I live in the US, BMWs are fairly common. I drive an F30, there are four more BMWs on my block, and they are often seen around town. Jaguar, particularly the F-Type, is very rare, even though my local dealer sells both brands. I believe it's down to pricing and service costs. It really stands out as a beautiful exotic car here. I love the looks of the coupe.
Still have a love of Jaguar I suppose. Back in the day, I owned a '67 XKE for a year or so. Sold it when I had to move for work.....a common but sad story I suppose.

Anyone else remember Tiff doing the most ridiculously awesome drift whilst testing the E60 M5 when it first came out? Can’t remember the track but it was an Interlargos Blue car.

I have the performance race steering wheel on my f10 m5 competition and find it to be the perfect balance. The upper half is really chunky especially around the led cluster for people like myself with bigger hands and the lower half is thinner then the standard wheel. Also covered in alcantara so best of all worlds. If you don't mind paying the £1400 premium that is

How did no one mention the adjustable suspension on the CS vs the non-adjustable on normal M2 Comp when they were speaking about the two? That is probably the number one selling point for me vs the Comp since it could be better on both road and track.

Cup2s (best available) vs Pzeros (worst available) are worth 4-6 secs per lap. I have both a JB4 BMW 135i M package dynoed at 420HP (4100 lbs cuz covertible) and an F-Type V8S (3650 lb convertible) tuned and dynod at 695 HP and the Jaguar is a full 2.5 secs faster to 60 mph. The Jag is a 10, the BMW is a 5 on a good day. Seriously, we are talking about a ridiculously upgraded economy car vs the best GT in the the history of the automobile. I also have $54,000 in relentless repairs in my 135i and a 6 ft long oil spill on its side of the driveway, vs a battery change under warranty on the Jag. It was $25,000 just for the BMW mastertech to tear down the engine to fish the VANOS bolts out of the oil pan and get it back up to speed. Two weeks of labor.

M2 Cs for me . Rear wheel drive manual sports coupe is just fun . The jag is still a great all round car . It tethers on a m8 coupe comparison so it’s hard to pass up on the m8 .

On track “sport” setting for throttle is more accurate since it’s 1:1 ratio of application to opening of throttle plate

Doesn’t this engine use valvetronic meaning the throttle plate is all the way open under almost any load and variable valve timing/lift to control power.
The F Type wins hands down. It's a great all round car. I can drive mine sensibly and get 35mpg but switch on the Dynamic and Sports mode and drift the back out at will plus the pops, crackles and bangs the car makes gives it a massive fun factor.
Part of buying a small sports coupe for most people is about the fun factor of how RWD acts. That's why AWD's manageability in the wet isn't a huge deal for a car like these.
Also, the old F-Type looks better.

I don’t understand why someone would choose a Manual, probably because I’ve just started driving.. but why is it so much better than a DCT Gearbox? In my eyes faster shifting = better?
