  • The correct term to use when referring to the dance is Breaking not Breakdancing. The latter is a term coined by the media in the earlier years and is viewed as disingenuous to those within the culture. We should avoid calling it break dance or break dancing.
From my experience at events here in the United States, I can say the Breaking scene here is close-knit and prides itself by local crews hosting grassroots events. These are usually funded through a mix of prize money from larger competitions, personal funds, ticket sales, sponsorships, and organizations like Silverback Bboy Events a sponsorship initiative organized to support the growth of the competitive breaking community with funding for breaking events and competitive breakers. Some colleges and universities have student-lead clubs dedicated to Breaking that often provide resources to fund their events. There are also a handful of larger international events in the U.S. that have lasted multiple decades. Bboy Summit recently celebrated it's 30th anniversary, and the upcoming Freestyle Session will be hosting it's 27th annual event in November. The latter is part of the Pro Breaking Tour, a series of professional competitions. The Tour was launched in January of 2014 and through the years has hosted competitions in the United States, Canada and parts of Europe. The community's infrastructure helps find and cultivate Breaking crews across the U.S., providing opportunities to battle each other and build reputations. Freestyle Session, which focuses on crew vs. crew battles, hosts regional qualifiers (in the U.S. and other countries) where the winners earn an opportunity to compete in the World Finals in Los Angeles. The champions in the World Finals receive custom rings, prize money, and bragging rights. Most importantly, events like Freestyle Session aim to honor hip hop pioneers while educating and building future generations of Breakers.
While countries like the U.S, France, South Korea, Japan, and others produce top Breakers through financial backing, infrastructure, and opportunities to teach younger generations, not all countries have the same benefits because they are in the early stages. That is why RedBull BC One, since 2004, has become a pivotal one-on-one Bboy and Bgirl event, important to the global Breaking scene with more than 60 qualifier events and programs in over 30 locations worldwide. It's crucial for decision makers and brands to be involved in the Breaking community to keep the history and spirit of hip-hop alive. This is why I'm hopeful that with new eyes on the scene, governments and brands will invest more in local community programs and competitions. Promotion through word of mouth and networking is how the scene has grown organically, but more can definitely be done to raise awareness among the general public.
