For the Olympics to thrive the IOC should want to maximise the countries competing and the number of events they compete in. The current method of ranking countries exclusively by gold medals discourages less wealthy countries from competing in a broad range of events. This will provide a much more representative ranking than gold only ranking.

Russia hasn’t won a summer Olympics in decades. They have zero chance of beating the US, Russia wasn’t even top 3 in the past 4 summer Olympics. The US won all of them. Russia was banned because they cheat in the Olympics and they’re trying to annex their neighboring country. They’ve been exposed for doping dozens of times. It’s very well documented and factually proven. It’s why the IOC didn’t allow Russia to use their flag or country in the past few Olympics. And now Russia invaded Ukraine, so they’re probably banned for another decade. Hopefully when they come back, they stop using steroids
@ Nerd Cassette Hey!, You know what would make an amazing video? Make separate charts for the winter and then for the summer Olympics. Countries like Austria are so far up the chart mostly because winter games medals. It's not fair for Ethiopia to be in the same chart, YKWIM ?
@@mellowmonsoon278Wtf are you talking about, Russia/USSR are historically known for doping, even up to present day. Getting real tired of all the American hate online.
You guys really need to stop the per capita qualification .The USA has less people than India and China. And the USA beats both countries even with. combined Medal Total. Also there are only soo many events any country can win. So you have to dominate or at-least be competitive. To ultimately win.
This should be number of medals per competitor! Some countries can afford huge teams, whilst others cannot. So I would say that a country that has, say, 10 competitors and wins a total of 8 medals is far more successful than the country with 100 competitors and wins 60.
Wealth is a huge factor, no doubt. But athletes don’t get to compete in the Olympics just because their country pays for it. They have to qualify. A country that sends many athletes must have enough money to send them, but also many high quality athletes to qualify
U should do another based on medals per population.... For example canada is 40 mill population with 550 medals .... USA is 400 mill population with 3000 medals .... Canada will actually be higher per population ... Will be interesting to see
So which country has won the most medals relative to its population? I think ranking based solely on the number of medals, especially gold medals, seems somewhat flawed.
Yes, because of the largest population. But I am so disappointed seeing India at that place. Why don't authorities take this thing serious. The whole world is laughing at us. When???Very small small countries are far ahead of us.
Nothing very surprising but l would like to see an index of global sport achievement by population. The US does really compete internationally in their version of football and baseball and it’s only recently they have become internationally competitive in football. My guess for the greatest sports nation would be Australia since from a small population they are very competitive in international sports. It’s easier to think of ones where they are not strong like winter and equestrian sports and boxing. The UK and Germany are also very competitive in a very wide range of sports although Germany not so much in boxing, cricket and rugby and the UK in winter sports, handball and basketball. Greatest under achievers has to be India.
Actually if you dig deeper, you can see that the Usa is Extremely strong in several certain sports (athletic, swimming, gymnastics, shooting, women football,...)
@@quangminh9873 Women’s football yes, golf, boxing, basketball and some other martial sports but most are ones which are underwritten by colleges. Australia is a much smaller country but it has a much more embedded (participatory not just watching) sports culture
How long have they been saying that? They crack under pressure in all the big games when it matters. Australia best cricket nation always were and always will be.
You cannot put West Germany and East Germany, it's unfair. They were rivals, two different entities, official accounts doesn't count East Germany in Germany. The numbers of athletes by country is cheated, and when W Germany lose again E Germany, they finally won in the total number? This is nonsense. Germany, as a country, doesn't have this number of medals. It's Germany -> West Germany -> Unifyed Germany, nothing more, East Germany isn't added.
I don't agree with current tabling method I think what should happen is that for each medal won by an athlete representing their country should be divided by the total number of total participants for the country There are certain countries that have 500 athlete's participating in the competition and then you got the ten odd athletes participating in the competition I don't think the medal table matches the whole population participating the whole tournament
I don't think it's fair to put Malaysia below UAE and Suriname for "success". Although Malaysia doesn't have a gold medal, 13 total medals including 8 silver is far better than just 1 gold and 1 bronze.
It should be Summer + Winter + Paralympics. They deserve their merit too. Some countries are great at Paralympics and I believe they deserve recognition for it.
Sorry I disagree, not because I deny the achievements of either winter or Paralympic’s but because of geographical and economic issues. Simply put it not possible to compete in the Winter Olympics if you don’t have …. Winter. For all intents and purposes all countries between on or near the Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer. Does not have any snow ( other than at extreme high altitudes) so it’s for all intents and purposes not possible for the majority of the worlds population to even consider playing a winter sport, no matter how talented they are. You might as well have a High Altitude Olympics ( nothing under 1500m ) or a Heat Olympics (where the temperature doesn’t go under 30 degrees Celsius with a UV index of 10+). The reason I would exclude Paralympic is the same reason I would exclude Women’s medals ( not because they are not competent sportspeople) but because for the VAST majority of the world there are NO facilities or funds for disabled or women’s athletes ( and that excludes cultural issues … go try and have a women beach volleyball team in Afghanistan and see what happens) … I live in a Third World Country in the Southern Hemisphere and I am an international level athlete ( I tried but did not qualify for Paris 2024). There is NO State funding whatsoever in my country for any Sports … you want to go to the Olympics sure go … pay for everything yourself from your tracksuit to your kit, to your flights , to your accommodation, training etc etc … I wasn’t the best in my country … I was just the best that could afford to go to the qualifiers. There you are up against full time professional athlete ( I have to work a full job), with professional coaches, technical officials, brand new equipment etc etc . Oh and the nearest qualifying even for me is 7000kms away in a different hemisphere. 80% of my particular sports events are in or around Europe… the European athlete can drive to their events. I have to catch a 20+ hour flight , switch to a different season ( I’m usually in the Southern Hemisphere winter so my bio rhythms are out of sync). And go through all sorts of visa regulations etc etc which European’s don’t have to go through. The last time we had an event in my country in summer ( NH winter) the temperature was 30+ degrees, at 1500m above sea level and a UV index on 13 …The Scandinavians had severe sunburn and we had to have Oxygen for most of the athletes from other countries as they literally would pass out. Bottom line is you CANNOT compare using a graph above. My country did not exist for the first 3 Olympics and was not allowed to participate in another 12. If we were allowed to and had even 1/100th of the amount of money that Norway spends on its athletes … that table would look VERY different , and that goes for every 3rd world country! One last thing … take a look at the athletes especially in the long distance events … in this Olympics … the marathon will have 30 different athletes with Kenyan/Somali/Ethiopian surnames running for the U.S./Canada/ Australia/ Europe/ Arab countries … why because the rich countries just “buy” the athletes. give me €100 billion and I will create and send a team from “Eswatini” that will clean up all the medals in the Summer, Winter and Paralympics
@@Verita1975very good points, and never mentioned when those who win the medals beat their chests in triumph in what has always been an unfair and skewed system. Further, this could also be said about inequalities within even the rich countries themselves. As example, when the US had the Coca Cola Olympics in 1996, the US track cycling fédération spent millions (somewhere around 9-12 million) developing a track specific bike which resulted in only two US silver medals. Apply enough money, and absolutely anything is possible/achievable.
If we just sweep all of Europe together, or only the EU countries, we are clearly the most superior in sports internationally. Clearly wealth has a lot to do with this.
But this is by country and not continent. You may as well “sweep” all of the Asian countries together or all of the North American countries together and Europe will still not be ahead.

Hopefully when they come back, they stop using steroids
you mean the US not all of america (:

@ Nerd Cassette Hey!, You know what would make an amazing video? Make separate charts for the winter and then for the summer Olympics. Countries like Austria are so far up the chart mostly because winter games medals. It's not fair for Ethiopia to be in the same chart, YKWIM ?
Ok bro thanks 💙.
I will make it soon.
true, Australia would be a few spots higher on the summer games list, but near the bottom on the winter list.
And the USA will still be at the top on the summer and near the top on the winter.

Counting medals by country is a violation of Article 6 of the Charter

#114 Sri Lanka - I’m guessing this one should be 2 silver medals not 1. If so would go up a few places, if not should go down a few places.
I think that I'd rank 3 Bronze higher than 1 Silver. I also think that Malaysia deserves a higher ranking for the numbers of medals that they've won.
Hong Kong appears at 4:05 and stats should be updated after 2024 Paris Games😂

Fun fact: Finland has won most Olympic gold medals (summer olympics) per capita.
Bahamas overtook them at the Tokyo Olympics.
@@parrais Looks like you're right. Finland is still 2nd in total medals per capita (after San Marino).
Shame they are so crap at both summer and winter games these days.
You guys really need to stop the per capita qualification .The USA has less people than India and China. And the USA beats both countries even with. combined Medal Total. Also there are only soo many events any country can win. So you have to dominate or at-least be competitive. To ultimately win.
@@lisaroberts8556 Yeah right, comparing USA 350 million against Finland 5 million makes absolute sense in actual numbers doesn't it?
Will be interesting to see
Or try another statistic, medals per Olympics. Some countries joined the game so much later.
In the future, it will be a cyborg race.
That's it. The Olympic Games are over. This is some kind of hat already, not a competition.
too bad. prior of finishing this video, the view is already blocked by adds to go to other related video's. blocking the number two and one spot. BAD!
Hungary is # 11.❤😊 Population is 9.6 million. Not bad at all!
Especially in fencing they are good.
Honduras have medals: 0 🥺
sad
So which country has won the most medals relative to its population? I think ranking based solely on the number of medals, especially gold medals, seems somewhat flawed.
Norway win extremely much gold per capita. No other countries even near them.
Slovenija. Only exist 33 years and 2 milion people, 52 medals. Only 6 Times in olyimpic! Very good. 🤔🇸🇮
Australia would be much higher also , only about 26 million people.
Do not know who is first but India is strong last
Australia
Jamaica 🇯🇲💪🏽
As a proud Indian, let’s do toilet counts, I bet you my country would come first!
That's obvious stupid as India has the biggest population
Yes, because of the largest population.
But I am so disappointed seeing India at that place. Why don't authorities take this thing serious. The whole world is laughing at us.
When???Very small small countries are far ahead of us.
East Germany, West Germany and the Federal Republic of Germany should be counted separately because they all have a quota, which is unfair
At Paris 2024 the US isn't showing "dominance " in swimming.
Still, they won 28 medals in total, most of any other country.
Australia is irrelevant in a backwater part of the world no one cares about but Australians.

Ага, а до этого был ещё 2 Рейх, Веймарская республика и 3 Рейх. А эти как считать?
I don't agree with current tabling method
I think what should happen is that for each medal won by an athlete representing their country should be divided by the total number of total participants for the country
There are certain countries that have 500 athlete's participating in the competition and then you got the ten odd athletes participating in the competition
I don't think the medal table matches the whole population participating the whole tournament
Russian olympic medal gain stopped at Rio 2016. ROC was separated from Russia.
kadang itu mereka kotor cara mahu menang😀😀
I don't think it's fair to put Malaysia below UAE and Suriname for "success". Although Malaysia doesn't have a gold medal, 13 total medals including 8 silver is far better than just 1 gold and 1 bronze.

It appears that Sri Lanka has a total of 4, not 2. And if they have only the one silver they should be lower on the list.
Cut the winter/ summer into two individual groups. That's fair.
Yeah because only hundred for winter
It should be Summer + Winter + Paralympics. They deserve their merit too. Some countries are great at Paralympics and I believe they deserve recognition for it.
Excellent mind! You make the world more beautiful.
Exacly, strange list..
Because a deaf athlete should compete with those missing limbs... ridiculous.@@Verita1975
