  • Simple technique to increase employee accountability.
How do you increase employee accountability. Get agreement, ask for commitment, if you publicly commit to something, you’re statistically more likely to follow through. This is a trick often used in coaching with asking for the coachee to say out loud they’re committed to whatever their next step is in their path towards their goal.
A restaurant in Chicago, called Gordons, had an ongoing issue with no shows on reservations. The owner decided to listen to receptionist take reservations, she included the phrasing, please call if you need to cancel. And then ended the call. The Owner asked the receptionist to add a pause before ending the call, so will you please call to cancel and then pause. He asked the receptionist to Wait for the guest to respond. Waiting for the person making the reservation to simply say, yes, I’ll call back to cancel. With this simple phrasing change their No shows dropped by 64%.
People want to be honest and consider themselves good people who commit to commitments. People actually feel guilty if they say out loud they are going to do something and don’t. Leverage that desire to be honest and a person of their word. Next time you ask an employee, a coworker, a leader to do something, pause for their commitment. You’ll be amazed how much more follow through you’ll see.
