    Great idea and instructions 👍👍.As I had just repotted my Monstera and as she is quite big I added a wooden pole into the middle with a pointed end, long enough to reach the bottom of the pot.That way I won't have moss inside the pot and it has given it great stability for her weight. (The average leaf is 120 cm in width so she is quite heavy.)

    I believe because Craig lives in Melbourne/Bali, his conditions allow for the moss in the soil to stay wet whereas where I am in London, I can't risk the moss to be wet in the pot. I basically measured the height of the pot and removed the moss in that part. :)

    • @tfl19
      @tfl19 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrJules159 I left the bottom section clear up to where the I want the top of the soil to be. Stability could be an issue but mine seems stable enough. Though I don't see why it can't be moss at the bottom if the soil mix is well draining enough.

    Thanks Ella for a great tutorial. Your pole turned out as good looking as that thai constellation!! I also love that you credited your inspirations and gave us the rationale for your choices.
    I have been tossing up between whether to put a stake inside my pole though and had a concern around sticking the whole pole in the pot, moss and all. Won’t that be risking root rot if the sphag retains too much water and is touching the roots???
    Thanks in advance

  • @nicolekuster6215
    @nicolekuster6215 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    First of all: great idea. The only point I want to remark is that this idea uses a whole lot of sphagnum, which once was considered could be sustainably harvested from peatlands, but after commercial harvesting, the character of the peatlands characteristics change dramatically for years. So, we should not support using it in these huge amounts. Luckily, there are many alternatives, like e.g. long coconut coir fibers (normally used for these “moss poles”) or sheet moss, which would have been great you would have used or at least mentioned so that not all of us are using so large amounts of sphagnum. Maybe someone else here has even better ideas?

    • @belenlagos6142
      @belenlagos6142 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've been looking into making a moss pole and had the same thought, my best shot for now would be using sphagnum moss for the "outer" part and filling the inner part with coconut fiber, lol. This moss is really expensive where I live too, so that helps with not wanting to use a lot of it (:

    • @YellowPineappleHoyas
      @YellowPineappleHoyas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if you could stuff it with coco coir sheets and kind of break it up to make it more airy. I’m going to try it, because spagnum is costly and the video doesn’t tell me how much I’ll need.

    • @iAdrianT
      @iAdrianT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@belenlagos6142 The roots usually go inside the moss pole, so Im not sure if using the coconut fiber in the middle is the best idea.
      An alternative to moss poles is using wood frames/ plates/ ironbark totems, not sure about the right name of it lol

    • @PlantyBoyBo
      @PlantyBoyBo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@belenlagos6142 that’s a great idea! The problem with coco coir is that it’s water resistant, so it doesn’t typically work in “moss” poles.

    Looks great! I have made the wrap around moss poles as well as the one with coco fiber. They work fine as a support but the roots did not take to them. I did this technique with the zipties. I tried both pole inside and outside. I felt like it used a lot of moss but I might have made them wider. The moss dries out really quickly. How do you rewet your moss without getting water everywhere? Do you mist? When you put it directly into the pot, does it require repotting? I put the stakes cause I thought it would tip over. 😓

      The mesh you are using is probably too thin. The one I have is not really pliable and doesn’t bend easy. I do not know the thickness. It is the kind that is used as a tree guard. There are more flimsy garden mesh’s but you want to make you use the sturdy one.

    I think that you forgot to show how you attached it to the post! Hopefully you'll do a follow up. But so far this is the idea that I had in mind. Thank you for confirming that it will work 😁

    My plant is root bound. How would you get the moss pole in?

    • @ThePlantsMeow
      @ThePlantsMeow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can’t lean the monstera against the pole because of the roots you can loosen the roots until you can position it better. If they can’t be loosened just use vecro (of whatever plant attachment you choose) to attach to the pole. Overtime the plant should grow toward the pole or at least feel supported.

      The mesh is a very sturdy one. But once you add a stake to the back there should be any issues 🤗
      Craig Milran has been doing it successfully for years without issue

    But where do you get the moss?

    • @ThePlantsMeow
      @ThePlantsMeow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually get the New Zealand sphagnum moss on amazon but it’s been out of stock more. I have recently ordered from the supermoss website but I haven’t opened the package yet to test the quality (but the price is great!)

      Sphagnum moss is an irritate when in contact with the skin. You don’t have to and I don’t always.

    It’s convenient of course, but making it out of plastic is just more non-degradable waste for our landfills, we care about rare plants but not to preserve its fragile environments, you can use wood, string and sphagnum moss for a completely biodegradable moss pole. How many people will watch this video and go buy a roll of plastic that they wouldn’t buy/need otherwise?

    • @ThePlantsMeow
      @ThePlantsMeow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I understand but I plan on reusing this plastic mesh for future plants or the same plant for as long as I have it (just changing the moss whenever it degrades). There is no need to throw it away if one plans to keep their plants

      I 100% agree that the use of plastic should be used as little as possible. What I disagree with is the notion of a “true gardender” that you are touting. I know many actual gardeners that use plastic tomato stakes, plastic liners, plastic nursery pots, greenhouses etc. This “true gardener” notion is one created from hubris. We can educate our fellow gardeners without shaming them.
