    Much congrats ! I love my 24 SGP FL5 I’ve had since April and love it more every day then any other car I’ve ever owned and I’ve had many . 61 years old here and your never to old in my book for any passions in life especially when it comes to cars . I plan on keeping mine stock but it’s a challenge since I always mod my cars. So far I’ve only got the Honda Factory Carbon Fiber rear wing, CF fender screens “a must” and tuxmat carpet liners to protect the beautiful red carpets . I feel like I’m on a never ending honeymoon . Definitely the best car buying choice I’ve ever made .
    Oh and I am considering tinting the windows to protect the interior but I’m holding off with all my will power lol.

      Well you can tell I'm no spring chicken either... I've owned many cars, and I've always appreciated the more surgical rather than brute horsepower vehicles. Seats are also a big deal to me. A BMW m2 would be great, but more money, and not as reliable, and this car should be more rare than that. Dealer made me buy Type R All weather mats so will see how well those cover. I've used Weathertec on most of my other cars.
      I've also looked at screens, but not sure which ones are best. Got a link?

    Great review, you're a natural on camera and it's refreshing to see someone older into these cars 😊. Only mod I did on mine was PRL HPI, great for sound and slight performance. Since these cars ride rigid, I have rattles here and there

      Thanks! Do you have a link to hear the sound difference with the intake? Does it affect anything else on the car? I'm a little Leary of modding as there often seems to be side effects.

      @brianr14190 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Congrats on getting the Type-R. It is a great car. I also had a FIST several years ago. A very fun car.
      I am a Honda guy, but I picked up a new GR Corolla 3 weeks ago. For me, as a 56 year old retiree the GR is easier to live with and more fun. Nobody seems to know about the GR, so I don’t get tempted to do silly things by others, like when I drove the Type-R. It is great that we still have fun manual transmission cars that are reasonably priced. (If you can get at MSRP)

    • @CoolcarCrapcar
      @CoolcarCrapcar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The GR Corolla sure is a great car. I think what swayed me was that I was on a list at a dealer who said they'd sell for MSRP. Well, they had mandatory add-ons that their Group charges on all cars, so I had to buy a few things extra. Other dealers in CDA were circumventing Honda's "cant sell for more than MSRP" so I was a little nervous that my dealer would pull the same tricks. They didnt, so am happy. Lots of $$ for a Civic, but I like all performance cars and thought the rarity of the Type R in Canada would ensure long term value.

      @CoolcarCrapcar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. I've had quite a few hot hatches through the years; Ford Escort GT, Civic Si, VW Gti , Fiesta ST. I wish the car itself wasnt so big, but I'm really liking it so far! Can't wait til 1000km to climb past 4000 rpm!

    • @brianr14190
      @brianr14190 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with your comment about the size. The Civic has continued to grow in size. All trim levels of the current generation Civic are really good.
      You mention the Fiesta ST. I really enjoyed the size and fun factor. I think that is why I am enjoying my new GR Corolla so much. It reminds me of the FIST but has more power and capability with the AWD. However like the FIST, the GR Corolla interior is not premium like the Civic.
      The Type-R is more hardcore than the GR and at least for me, I was more tempted to drive it a little too aggressive on the street.
      Since I have no plans to take a car to the track, the GR works better for me.

    • @CoolcarCrapcar
      @CoolcarCrapcar  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I havent driven a GR Corolla yet. Would like to track one down and compare to my R (in another video of course!) If I was driving in winter at all, I'd have gotten a GR. Interestingly there are about half a dozen used one in my city; I wonder why people have traded them in or bailed on payments? Still long waiting lists for Type R in Canada and very little being shipped here.

    Nice introduction to your FL5 journey. They're such a special car to drive, and it rewards at any speed so you don't need to fang it at all. Even cruising is nice and comfortable but with astonishing feedback.
    That exhaust noise is criminal though. Way too subdued, and the piped in noise is overwhelming.
    Looking forward to seeing how you go with it. I love mine.

    If you press the HOLD button for the parking brake, then you can drive off in 1st gear and the parking brake will automatically disengage. And since HOLD is on (indicated by the green light) you can stop at a red light and not have to hold the brake pedal.

      Oh yes, that’s right, seatbelt has to buckled in for this to work. Darn safety nannies

  • @Daniel-td5ck
    @Daniel-td5ck 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    The type R is a four seater because the tire and suspension combo is rated for 308 kg or 680 pounds max capacity of passengers and cargo combined for international customers, especially big fellas in the states they didn't want to make it a safety issue. You can verify on the tire safety label located on the driver side door sill.
    I believe their purpose was to make the most capable track car for the dollar and had to sacrifice comfort, ride, and hauling more people.
    I know the exhaust has additional resonators to meet international decibel level limits for importing. That's why the exhaust sounds lackluster, especially compared to type s, sold only in u.s markets.
    I love mine. I wish they could have managed to increase fuel tank size, I'm averaging about 240 mi. before having to refuel.
    A traditional handbrake would have been nice, and personally, I would have appreciated tpms even at an added cost. I purchased a sks airchecker from my local bicyshop for like $45, I highly recommend it's been very accurate and dependable on several occasions.

    • @CoolcarCrapcar
      @CoolcarCrapcar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had not heard anything about weight being a factor. That would make sense, as otherwise it was an odd decision. I also have seen the gas gauge move alarmingly fast, only to realize the fill up was so little. I wish the type S exhaust was the same length and just bolt on; I'd do that in a heartbeat. I also agree about the handbrake and didnt know about TMPS (yet). Lots to learn about the car and will have a series of ownership videos on the car.

    I’ve had mine since February. I did the suspension module swap from the Integra Type S and it’s absolutely worth it. I also swapped out the Active Sound generator from the Integra Type S, and it’s another good improvement. A lot of people don’t seem to realize, but the pumped in fake engine sound is very different between the two cars. The Civic is very buzzy and artificial sounding, whereas the Integra fake engine noise has more of a growl to it. I thought it would be better than just disabling it, since I like to be able to hear what the engine is doing, even if it’s augmented/fake.

    • @CoolcarCrapcar
      @CoolcarCrapcar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hadn't read about then active sound generator swap. How much did that cost? The suspension module swap looks pretty good to me as our winnipeg roads are awful. We have so many freeze-thaw cycles, the water seeps in and then freezes and busts everything up.

    • @erikg2493
      @erikg2493 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CoolcarCrapcar The sound generator module was about $66 USD. Installation involves taking the long strip with the AC vents out of the dashboard, and then you can remove the original sound module and plug in the new one. There are videos on YT about opening the dash to get to it. You could also try and get your dealer to do it if you supply the part and pay for labor.

    So im a canuck living over in the US. So far i put mine on lowering springs and had the ecu sent to hondata to to jailbrake. Tuned on 83 with the type s pops and bangs tune. (Which is basically a nice pop between shifts and 1 on decel) I also had both resonators removed and kept the mufflers. I really enjoyed this review! I have an Elantra N (not sure if you get those in your market) but the interesting thing is that all of the positives that you listed for the Type R are definitely agreeable but I was sold on the Elantra N because of the "downsides" that you mentioned (Elantra N exhaust sounds amazing (and ridiculously) from the factory and the suspension in normal is super compliant).
    That said, I'm a huge fan of the Type R and I feel that it sets the benchmark for FWD performance cars!! Hope you continue enjoying it!

      @@CoolcarCrapcarJust my two cents…As a previous owner of 2 FK8 CTRs I would recommend eventually getting some lightweight 18 inch wheels. I had 20s and my son had stock 19s on his Accord…both had tires pop due to bad roads/potholes.(two tires at the same time on my CTR). Most people who track their cars use 18s because the actual stock sized tires(basically rubber bands thickness wise don’t last very long). I did the Phearable Stage 2 Tune on my 2019 which can be returned back to stock easily with a computer(for me,I liked the tune with its different shift points etc./no issues whatsoever!(put 88k on that car in one year/commuting) I traded in 19 for 21 to go FBO(approximately 400hp). Spent 12-15 on parts,labor,wheels,custom tune etc…I wouldn’t necessarily do that again because adding that cost on top of a CTR’s price opens up other options performance car wise in that price range. I love the slot car handling and Honda’s bulletproof reliability…it’s just not the fastest car off the line. I actually liked the stealthy exhaust note because it didn’t announce to every cop within 5 miles that I was coming. It also helped when passing another car on the freeway for those people who think it’s cute to speed up and close a gap…just because you’re trying to pass. No loud exhaust alerting them that I’m powering up. Closest thing to a ICE Tesla😂.I’m sure we’ve all heard the proverbial Mustang with the super loud look at me exhaust…🙄

    After retiring my AP1, I dabbled between the FL5 or the EN. Ultimately I went with the EN, what sold me was how playful the suspension geometry is. How easy it is to manipulate the vehicle between lift off, throttle input, trail brake etc. Reminded me very much so of the DC2 ITR. I’m sure I would have loved the FL5 as well, lucky in these times to have these options!

      I have heard good things about the EN. I wish the FL5 had its exhaust. Getting a Type R was basically its rarity, specific body panels, interior, seats, but mostly to have something that was unique around Canada and would hopefully hold its value. These cars are coming to an end, so thankfully still a few around. Did you opt for manual or auto?

      @@CoolcarCrapcar I thought the FL5 entire cabin was incredible. Very driver focused oriented, seats were perfect. In comparison to the ITR and AP1, I just felt that the FL5 fell short in many ways. Needless to say the FL5 is plenty faster but, that euphoria felt with the ITR and AP1 just was not present. Surprisingly, that sensation was present with the EN experience. Ultimately why I purchased it. I opted for the Manual but the DCT was light years ahead. Lightning fast shifts, incredibly smooth, very Porsche PDK like. I am by no means an automatic guy but the DCT is super impressive. If you track competitively, the DCT will give you a definitive advantage over the Manual, or any Manual I should say.

I am concerned about after market exhausts as there always seems to be a problem with droning or electronics or something else, so I'll wait or just live with it. ITS exhaust would be the way to go if someone can recreate that; too bad it's longer than CTR so doesnt plug and play.

    Congrats on the FL5 purchase! You sure were patient with the 27 month wait, but you'll be pretty happy with it. Like you I bought mine sight unseen and relied truly on reviews. I'd recommend some GPS or hidden security installed. Yes, the OEM 19" wheels are fantastic, just the +60mm offset it not that pretty. Look into Bonoss forged 15mm or 20mm hub centric/wheel centric spacers to get those wheels flush with the fenders - gives it a much needed aggressive fitment.

      Are these often stolen? I can drop an AirTag on it but hadn't even considered it til your comment. Offset spacers are on my "maybe" list. Need to investigate further. Great advice. I generally do that with any car. I dont know if I've heard of a lot of other manufacturers having trouble with the 2nd gear synchro and from what I"ve read, this has been a long standing problem for Honda, who makes great transmission! I did hear the casing is too small for them to put a larger/beefier synchro in there, so maybe thats the issue? My s2000 also had a bit of a 2nd gear grind. I havent pushed this car yet and wont til its broken in so I have no idea if I'll have same problem.

    The auto dim mirror and garage buttons might be a good life quality change for me. Thank you for this video.
    Also, I have the ITS Damp Module and it is great! I recommend it if you want a level below comfort for sure. Some would argue its too soft especially once you start modding and adding your own tires size, rims, spacers, coil overs.

      @CoolcarCrapcar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the info on the ITS damp module. I want to keep this pretty much stock as thats the way I usually keep cars, but can swap the module if I want. I am pretty sure getting the mirror and garage button unit is a good idea; I think it's pretty cheap and quite easy to install.
      So, about that ITS module. Does the Type R mode have a good exhaust sound (probably still speaker enhanced?) without the punishing ride I currently have? I love a good exhaust sound, too bad we don t have the ITS one.

    • @vlj1133
      @vlj1133 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CoolcarCrapcar The ITS module only changes the suspension damping rates. It alters nothing else. So, each of the three modes and all the other Individual options are still available, and unchanged. The engine sound goes through the same three levels that it does with the stock module. +R engine sound is the same with either module, as are Custom and Sport sound. Same with the steering, and engine response. They all retain the same three levels as before. The only thing you'll notice is that you no longer have the stock +R suspension stiffness, as the new +R mode is roughly the equivalent of the stock Sport suspension. Sport is now the same as the stock Comfort suspension, and Comfort is now one step more comfortable than the stock Comfort suspension. In all three new suspensions modes, there is less bounciness. With the stock module, Comfort suspension mode is the least bouncy, but still too bouncy when going hard over bumpy roads. With the ITS module, that bounciness is greatly reduced. Better yet, you can actually use +R mode sometimes now. Comfort mode becomes genuinely comfortable. Sport mode is like taking the stock Comfort mode and optimising it, leaving it still fairly firm, but significantly less bouncy.
      For only $220, it's a no-brainer. Try it and decide. It's a ten minute swap that's easily reversible, and if you decide that you prefer the stock module then you will be able to sell the ITS module very quickly without losing any money.

If I were to ever cross over to Honda, Championship White is the color I would go for, just because it is unique to the Type R, unless they come out with Phoenix Yellow then it's a toss-up. I know if i get the BMW 240, it will probably be much quicker. Trying to work out all the pros ad cons. I currently own a 2019 Honda Accord 2.0 Sport which is basically a detuned 2.0 Type R engine.

      Well, I have owned quite a few cars, including a M135i which was one of my favourite cars. I sold it because I had friends (who also owned BMW's) talk about their car repair costs and I got nervous and got rid of it prior to warranty expiring. I would like rear wheel drive always, so the GR86 would be a tempting purchase. There are plenty of GR86's out there so I wanted something more special and in Canada these will be rare. I could have saved a bunch of money buying a used GR86 for sure and maybe that would have been a good choice. If you had to pay anything above MSRP for the Civic, then many people say it's not worth the money. Do you need room or carry people? Civic hands down. The Toyota will probably be very reliable except it uses a Subaru Boxer engine which doesnt have the same longevity as a lot of Toyota engines.Finally, I havent driven a GR86 or current m240 so dont know how rough they ride. Civic can be a bit rough, even on Comfort. Tough call.

      @@CoolcarCrapcarI test drove the GR86 and it's also super fun drive. Not the fastest in a straight line but hugs the road really good and manual gearbox is awesome. Almost, reminds me of the gearbox for the Miata but on a stiffer ride. The m240 is a beast and super quick on a straight, around 4 seconds in a straight line. The new BMWs are more reliable than before but maintanence can get expensive if it breaks. However, the B58 engine is indestructible, it's one of BMWs good quality engine hence they put the same engine in the Toyota Supras. I could save money and get the GR86 but its only a 2 door. Even though it's me and my wife since my kids are grown own, occasionally, I spend time with my mom and she is partially handicap and uses a wheelchair so i dont think a wheelchair will fit in the trunk of the GR86. One thing i hate about the FL5 is the spoiler. Me being in the 40's is kind of acward driving with that spoiler. lol. But i could get the Acura Type S but the cost is higher and i found a used 2023 FL5 with 2K miles selling for $44K in USD which is about 59,611 in CAD . Hard decision.

    • @CoolcarCrapcar
      @CoolcarCrapcar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In what way? Adding to MSRP? Here in Canada Honda has a rule about not selling above MSRP, but most dealerships are sneaky and have "mandatory packages" or put on PPF and Ceramic and you have to buy it the way it is. The worst dealerships (mostly Ontario and BC) "sell" the car to a spouse or friend, who drives it 300 km and then sells it back to them. They then have cranked the asking price 25k in some situations, but because it's a "used" car, they circumvent Honda's rules. I bought mine for MSRP except for a few extras, but because of the person ahead of me ordering ceramic coating, I got tagged an additional $1200 than I was expecting to pay. I could have waited, but they were told zero allocations next year, so this could be their last one!

      Its partially dealers fault, even in Canada where they are legally obligated to sell at MRSP, but "sell" them to a friend, who drive 300km and then sells it back to dealership so they can call it used and add 20k to the price. I only would have bought one because I got one at MSRP and they are rare in Canada. Lots of great cars out there, but everything has ballooned in cost.

    I must be the only person on earth that doesn’t like this car. I had a 2024 Type R for only three months before getting rid of it. Although it is very nice car, it was horrible to drive on my daily commute. My biggest complaints were no power in 1st-2nd gear, it’s just hit fast in any way, the shifter and steering are overly heavy, and the exhaust is stone quiet. The seats are also too tight if you weigh over 180lbs or so. I will say, the body and interior are beautiful. The wide body, paint, wheels, red carpet, and quality of the seats are standouts. All in all, I just couldn’t justify keeping a car that I don’t enjoy driving.
