I've had a 2007, black, 3-door, manual now for more than 8 years. It has been a total workhorse of a car and I'll be the first to admit that I kick the absolute shit out of it whenever I get the opportunity. I got it at 59,600 miles and it's on 144k now. I've kept up with services every 8-10k, the timing belt has been done 3 times already and every suspension has all but been replaced for new items but the engine is still unopened and it is still on its original clutch. I've been looking at buying something new but I'm worried that I've spoiled myself with such a good car and hope that I can recapture the magic that I felt the first time I drove it. It's been a fabulous car

Got my 2008 MkV 10 years ago, a silver Japanese import (to New Zealand) with 22,000km and all the nice stuff - DSG, Leather, Sunroof.
It has 130,000km on it now Stage 1 tune, BBS wheels. When I look at replacements I can't find a reason to change - apart from the colour, otherwise as Sid says its the best Gti. So I'll just keep it, refresh the bushings and suspension and keep having MkV fun.

Whatever you said is like I'd be listening to myself talking to someone, why have I chosen MK5 GTi as a family daily driver. Utterly fabulous cars with good tuning potential. Sid, your videos are absolutely superb, the quality of the video is fantastic. Always fancied one of the these, although they are the generally the best all rounder, and arguably the most capable. I found them underwhelming and a little bit flat to drive. They just do it all too well for me, I walked away with the Astra VXR, and have owned several since. Even though the Golf is better in ever single way, the VXR was the far more enjoyable car for me, the sound, the torque steer is an absolute hoot!

In the market for an MK7 GTI. I drive an MK7 right now witch I don’t really need / want to get rid of. I’ve been thinking of buying an MK5 to enjoy throughout the summer and flip at the end to get used to the power and GTI life so I could look around for my MK7 replacement before next year summer … if that makes sense. My wife has a couple of Golfs, she dailies a GTI MK5, completely standard, manual, tartan interior, original double DIN stereo/6 CD stack and aircon are probably the only extras from factory. It does everything and still goes like stink. Its a keeper as I don't think theres anything else available value for money, fun and practicality. Only downside its red and its hard to keep it looking nice, but after a light detail and a bit of black polish on the trim and wheels its a stunning looking car. End of video edit, my favourite hot hatch is the integrale Evo2, I'm very lucky to own one but its a garage queen, I have no intention ever having to use it as a daily driver.

I love a MK5 golf GTI. I went from a Renault Sport Clio RS 200 to a MK5 Golf GT TDI BKD 140 as i wanted the fuel economy with long journeys. Although i cant talk from a GTI perspective the MK5 is one of the best golf's out there , The MK5 Chassis handle extremely well even for a slightly bigger car than the clio. Feels very much like a go kart when lowered , Steering is lovely and responsive and is a lot more refined and generally safer feeling at higher speeds. I was looking at a GTI but i then found the GT TDI with a stage 1 and all supporting mods/Most of the parts off of a GTI and it would give a MK5 GTI a run for it's money. Plus cheaper insurance/Tax and easily 50-60mpg... VW really nailed the MK5 golf's

Had a 5 door manual stage 2 and have a 3 door DSG stage 2 now, both excellent fun to drive but prefer the DSG for daily use. They have an Electronic steering rack in the Mk5 which only assists at low speeds so you get great feedback at higher speeds. One of the most underrated cars on the market an worth every penny but go for a later BWA engine code they’re better than AXX.

Make sure you get a good one tho, they need a service every/earlier than 60,000 or the Metronics can go bad and it costs about £600 to repair or replace so similar cost to a manual clutch change. DSG should be roughly £1,000 more than the equivalent manual too so be prepared to pay for the DSG if you want one.

Tackle front suspension then back, rebuild the gearbox down, then drop a new low mileage motor after its built for 250, then enjoy mpg, reasonable tax and a medium Reek map. Had a 1.9 mk5 match se went to a sports tdi, full interior upgrade and sports suspension does make it different but 50/35/8 mpg to my 40/25 is a drop I can't accept as well as a mapped 105, and a mapped 140 being closer than I'd like, gti engine has been considered but with a 4motion tdi driveline, ratios get confusing

Steering is electric, not hydraulic. I bought my MKV GTI new in July 2008 and still love it. Rear sway bar upgrade, better dogbone, Stage 1 tune - BEE-UDIFUL. Can't bring myself to sell it, don't know what would be an upgrade.

Love my MK5. Bought mine back in 2012 with 89,000 or so on the odometer and haven't had a single regret. Are they expensive to work on? Yes! But you pay to play and boy is it fun. First mod I did to it was the roller cam follower. Set me back a good chunk but it was by far the best money I've spent on her. Great review!

what would you suggest getting done, hoping to get one and run about 250 and just get some nice breaks & coilovers on it to get it stopping and handling nicely but anything youd really reccomend? ty

    • @eoll6322
      @eoll6322 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@soon8548 Well that depends on your goals. Do you plan on keeping the car long term? Trust me, once you start modding, it becomes a slippery slope quickly, so be tactful where and how you spend your money.
First thing I'd do with it is check service records and give it a good inspection. Have the cam follower looked at asap. If you are mechanically inclined, I would highly recommend becoming familiarized with this car and do as much work on your own as possible. It will save you lots of money.
If you plan on 250, there are several tuning options on the market that will get you extra power you will enjoy. Unitronic, APR are just a few examples. From there, the options are plentiful with brakes and suspension. Do your research and join some message boards.

@@eoll6322 yeah I’m a trained mechanic but haven’t worked on a car for a while as I’ve not need one & got family that work in garages so can get anything done for relatively decent prices so anything is within grasp. I’ll likely have it for a good few years just want a nice car that can do everything with a decent bit of poke as my last car was a seat Ibiza cupra with the 1.8T pushing about 300. Thanks for the heads up on the cam follower, will get that checked as it’s serviced

The MK5 GTI are really great cars and performance wise they are amazing really fast ive owned one for years and their the most fun u can get in a car for really cheap little pocket rockets they are the only issue is they are very bad on fuel it drinks a lot of fuel when putting the power down or even driving normally in my opinion other then that my car has never given me any issues its worth going for a low mileage on in my opinion just make sure it has good service history

Just got a 5 door manual one in red. Drives like a brand new car its insane how tight it feels. Looks timeless also as you said. Only gripe is mine needed a cambelt change. The paint is also faded a little so needs constant buffing to keep fresh. The radio has no ACC by default or canbus decoder box so i needed to fuse tap a new ACC. The headlights i had to change also as it had some naff aftermarket ones on. Oh and it came with a decat, not my cuppa tea so been sourcing a sports cat for it. Not the biggest problems to have though :). Fantastic cars recommend to anyone.

@@conorf8091 Cheers i am, here in the UK they are plentiful. There seem to always be 50+ for sale on popular websites for sub £5. The real issue is getting one that has not been wrote off and put back on the road with bad repairs. Or finding one with a fully working engine. Allot have oil pump/cam belt/chain issues or turbo failure. Its a bit unfortunate because with so many for sale you come across these issues allot that are being hidden. I had to look through a good 20 odd cars before settling on the one i got. But even this one had some minor issues, but all sorted now i think i am at a total of £4k spent for a 113k very good example (including the car).
