Nice edition to the episode. I wish that dialog had been retained, it clearly adds more depth to Uhura's explanation of music. Is it me or is that George Takei's voice in the background with that of Vic Perrin's Nomad? Merry Christmas.

You are 100% correct. That is George Takei's voice, off camera, that is speaking lines to Uhura (Nichelle). And yes, 100%, Vic Perrin's voice for Nomad. You as well. Thank you for your excellent comments. 👍🖖🏆

Yes, it certainly is. George Takei is off camera, speaking his lines, while the camera is focussed on Nichelle Nichols. 👍🖖

I wish her dialog, perhaps in a slightly more abbreviated fashion had been retained. I like Uhura’s exposition here about the science behind music. Beats her just saying basically “I felt like music…I enjoy singing”.

No but by not going into depth, Nomads line belittling her makes more sense. With this extra depth, Nomad's comment that she just a mass of conflicting impulses might seem out of place. Besides, gotta make way for alpo and ivory snow. LOL.

@ What I never liked about Nomad’s reaction, probing Uhura’s mind and inadvertently erasing practically all her memories and her having to be retrained as an officer (beginning at the kindergarten level) That was just far too much to accept.

@@historybuff66 One of the rules about episodic television is that you have to bring everything back at least close to the way it began. Without that bit - far fetched though it may have been - they could not have drained her mind i the first place. Otherwise, this story could conflict with other stories now being submitted for next weeks episode.

@ Yes, I can appreciate the overriding importance of continuity/consistency as it pertains to character traits, be it memory, style of locution/diction, etc. My point is simply that script writer John Meredith Lucas took the memory erasure event to an unnecessary extreme level, leading to a lapse of logic where Uhura’s retraining and memory restoration was concerned. All that was needed basically is for Nomad to restore her memory loss without the silliness of her having to learn reading all over again, beginning at an incredibly remedial level.

People seem to not like the erasing of memories and having to re-learn. I thought it was very creative and original. We all, of course, have to suspend reality when watching science fiction. It also opened the door to give Uhura major compliment when it was mentioned that she seemed to be especially adept at mathematics.

I can understand why this was cut as it made Uhura look like her mind was already wiped.

Is there more from this episode about Uhura's mind being erased and her reeducation. I always found it ambiguous whether her memory of her life was erased or only her education, if it's possible to separate those concepts. The show simply wasn't interested enough in Uhura as a character to seriously consider what would be the personal consequences of what happened to her, beyond her relearning how to do her job on the ship.

It’s nuts, isn’t it? Her mind is wiped, but she still speaks Swahili, and is able to reeducate herself in a matter of days. She’s like #4 in the chain of command! At this point, it’s all book learning, not experience. Well, I’m sure they’d be shocked to find someone fuming about this half a century later!

The director could have tried harder. She is getting to a great response but is clearly feeling it out.

Actually better set of dialogue, and Nichelle puts in the suppressed consternation of talking to a machine who could not have an emotional or a theoretical programed understanding.

Thank you for the video! I'm just curious where are these deleted scenes are being found? They're not from any DVD or Blu-ray release I'm aware of, so I was just wondering where they were being found? If there is a release out there that contains these I would like to own it! 🖖

I would suggest these are alternate takes rather than scenes which had been permanently cut from the broadcast version.

@Renshen1957 yes you're probably right, what I'm really asking though is where are they from, is there a release that contains these scenes? I'm just curious where did the TH-cam Creator obtain them? I'm seeking to find the release so I can purchase it if possible?

Actually that was very poorly written, not Nichelle's fault. I'm a musician among other things and so was Nichelle. A lot of that dialogue was VERY contradictory. Music is all about frequency and vibration and most ESPECIALLY harmonics is. On the one hand It was a missed opportunity (among MANY) for Nichelle to shine with more dialogue. On the other hand, most of that was bullshite. I wonder how much of her expression was acting the role and how much was realizing that musically speaking, "this is bullshite".

I was going to make a similar comment, but you had already posted this.
One quibble I have with what you wrote is that in addition to frequency, vibration, and harmonics, music is also about rhythm.
I think the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of music is fairly good: the science or art of ordering tones [aka pitches or frequencies and their harmonics] or sounds [e.g., nontonal sounds such as drum strikes] in succession [e.g., melody], in combination [e.g., harmony, chords], and in temporal relationships [e.g., rhythms and phrasing] to produce a composition having unity and continuity. [Words or phrases inside [ ] are my explanatory additions.]
The purpose of making music is to express oneself, to communicate, to produce or increase enjoyment, and/or to accompany another activity such as dancing, eating, reading, relaxing, romancing or scenes in an audio-visual production.
