Remember us kids back in the late 60s rushing home from elementary school to watch "Dark Shadows" it was scary and we loved it, a time long gone but fondly remembered, RIP Jonathan Frid, forever "Barnabas Collins"...
Way before twilight. There was dark shadows. No pun intended. This actor not only humanizes a vampire. He becomes a cult hero in the process. That is theatrical genius. Rip Jonathan ,bravo!! 🎉
Good to see him ; he does a nice interview. I was pleased to see he came in costume, complete with fangs. Loved this show when it was new; His interpretation of a tortured person who was a vampire not by choice, was insightful and it was fun to watch him work toward a cure. Thank you, Jonathan Frid, for good memories.
I wouldn’t miss Dark Shadows for anything! I was so unhappy when it went off the air. There was nothing like it and can never be replaced. RIP to all the players who have passed.
His deadpan delivery of such campy dialogue is unmatched even today. I often find myself channeling my inner Barnabas when I am challenged into conversations with complete strangers. Rather than become confrontational, Barnabas has taught me how to use sarcasm intelligently to disarm a mental adversary
I remember in the 60’s Dark Shadows with the incredible Johnathan Frid he was truly Dark Shadows it was rushing for the TV every day and get the hell scared out of you he was truly something else R.I.P Johnathan Frid you are truly missed and always remembered charming and elegant very well played by him 😊
I didn't care much about Dark Shadows in the late '60s/early '70s when my babysitter would watch it every day but when Barnabas came on I was always at attention. Dude was a superstar back then.
I LOVE DARK SHADOWS. RUSHED HOME EACH DAY FROM SCHOOL TO WATCH IT. I HAVE EVERY EPISODE (1225) ON DVD AND WATCH THE COMPLETE SERIES ONCE EVERY 2 YEARS.

I will be 74 in May, and I really loved watching this man in Dark Shadows. He portrayed his character so wonderfully. I was always on his side, no matter who he bit. I think he inspired me so much that I really got into the scary side of the paranormal. Rest in Peace, Jonathan.
It was live on tape. Each episode was taped one or two weeks before being aired. But the producers did not have a budget that allowed for retakes, and editing tapes was expensive as well, so all errors and miscues remained for all to see. Thank goodness there were a lot of teleprompters off screen for the actors to look at.
Growing up with Dark Shadows was so much fun! All our family, we kids, our parents, aunts and uncles and even grandparents would always talk about the series around the holiday table. And Jonathan seems so down-to-earth. Loved this episode. Thank you to Mr Frid and all the Dark Shadows cast.
I loved Jonathan Frid! What I most liked about his performances was the show was filmed LIVE! Filming live you only get one shot at the take, no matter what. You had to keep going and do the best you could. If someone went up on (ie flubbed) a line, you had to pray the other actors would jump in and cover for you. When Jonathan blew a line, he fell right out of character. His accent vanished and you could see his panic, until he remembered the script. But he always soldered on like real a trooper and finished the scene. In some of these episodes his part was 15 or 20 minutes long. I know I couldn't remember 5 minutes of script and recite it let alone 20 minutes worth! These TV soap opera actors in the 60's and 70's were REAL Professionals!

~~ Jonathan Frid was always a delight in whatever he did. His famous character was so iconic that he was forever attached to it - ( or it to him ) - but make no mistake JF was a REAL actor - with great range, emotional depth and skill ..
When I was 8,9,and 10 the music scared me so much I refused to watch the show, then my friends talked about it and I started turning the introduction music OFF and watched for many years.....Loved him!
True enough, but at least Depp and Tim Burton gave both Jonathan Frid and Christopher Lee their props by casting them both in the reboot film. As the other poster says, it was JF's last role and one of the last for Mr Lee. Johnny was tickled pink that he got to hypnotize Dracula, as Lee was the ensorcelled sea captain.
I really looked forward to see Johnny Depp as Barnabas. I figured the movie would be outstanding since both he and Tim Burton loved DS. I was truly disappointed. It was more campy than I expected. I've seen it once and that was enough. Thank goodness we can still catch the original.
My mom was a 'Dark Shadows' super fan. She recorded nearly every episode on VHS when it was airing on the Sci- Fi channel in the early 90s. Definitely one of the most unique soap operas on TV and the storylines were quite compelling. I had a crush on Alexandra Moltke aka Victoria Winters. Of course, Jonathan Frid's Barnabas Collins was the main event of the show. In my opinion he made Dark Shadows iconic.
I am also a huge fan and watched it as much as I could when it was on ABC. For those unaware, all episodes are available on the free TUBI streaming service. The are split between "Dark Shadows - the Beginning", which are the episodes prior to the appearance of Barnabas (and I think are good - and they have their share of ghosts and a "phoenix"), and the episodes that start with Barnabas are just called "Dark Shadows". FYI
Thank you for adding this! I was in eighth grade when Dark Shadows originally aired on KTVI (Channel 2) in St. Louis, MO. When school let out at 3 p.m. the girls all ran out the door screaming, running to get home to watch Dark Shadows. I was not a fan at that time. I did watch one episode, and it didn't move me. I made up for it years later when I purchased the coffin box CD set. It took me a little over a year, but I watched every episode. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cast was so talented! Thanks again!!
Nice to see another fellow St.Lousian and fan of " Dark Shadows" also! It was a Very good show and the actors were so Very Good in their roles, bar non.
I have to admit, the first year didn't wow me and I dropped it after the first couple of slow moving episodes ... I didn't watch soaps so I didn't know the formula of everything happens on Friday yet ... and then my friends started talking about vampires and things so I got into from there and enjoyed it quite a lot.
I was in like first grade. And my older sister and I loved to watch it. My Mom made us stop because she thought it would give us nightmares. (Mostly me I guess). So.. we started going to our friends houses to watch it. My Mom finally gave in later. But... I remember it. Then.. in the 80's they brought it back. Called it Barnabas. My co-workers and loved it. But it got cancelled after the cliff hanger. I was SO mad. 😊
My Mom also had me stopped watching Dark Shadows because of my nightmares during the 60’s. I got a kick out of watching Jonathan Frid appearing in Costume & Fangs in What’s My Line!. 😮I was delighted and smiling the whole time ; priceless treasure! 😻
My Grandma was friends with Mr. Frids mother . I used to see him occasionally and YES he would wear the Cape and put in the vampire teeth for us kids .
I had the pleasure of seeing him star in Arsenic and Old Lace at Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium in Tempe, AZ in 1986 or '87. He was hysterical! Frid was indeed a very talented actor. Too bad most people just know him as Barnabas Collins.
I saw him in the same play in Tacoma, Washington in 1987 with Frid in the role of "Jonathan", the serial killer competing with the poisoner aunts. The aunts were played by Maureen Stapleton - formerly Edith Bunker of All in the Family; and Marion Ross - formerly Mrs. Cunningham on Happy Days. Gary Sandy, who was Andy Travis on WKRP in Cincinnati played Mortimer the drama critic and Larry Storch of F Troop was Dr. Einstein. As you might imagine, it was hilarious.
Still to this day I can vividly see the scene with Willie opening the lid to Barnabas coffin and the look of terror on his face, I literally jumped up and hid behind my Mom who was also watching with us. This Show would literally make you have nightmares, But, we couldn't get enough of it!!! I'm 56 yrs old And I still watch this Show with a light turned on.

I used to get home from school & hurry to the TV & turn on Dark Shadows. Barnabas was great. My favorites were Sarah & Angelique.
I wish TV today was like it was in the 60/70s.
I visited the historic home in Terrytown, NY where the movie was shot.
