Remember us kids back in the late 60s rushing home from elementary school to watch "Dark Shadows" it was scary and we loved it, a time long gone but fondly remembered, RIP Jonathan Frid, forever "Barnabas Collins"...
Way before twilight. There was dark shadows. No pun intended. This actor not only humanizes a vampire. He becomes a cult hero in the process. That is theatrical genius. Rip Jonathan ,bravo!! 🎉
Good to see him ; he does a nice interview. I was pleased to see he came in costume, complete with fangs. Loved this show when it was new; His interpretation of a tortured person who was a vampire not by choice, was insightful and it was fun to watch him work toward a cure. Thank you, Jonathan Frid, for good memories.
I wouldn’t miss Dark Shadows for anything! I was so unhappy when it went off the air. There was nothing like it and can never be replaced. RIP to all the players who have passed.
I LOVE DARK SHADOWS. RUSHED HOME EACH DAY FROM SCHOOL TO WATCH IT. I HAVE EVERY EPISODE (1225) ON DVD AND WATCH THE COMPLETE SERIES ONCE EVERY 2 YEARS.
Growing up with Dark Shadows was so much fun! All our family, we kids, our parents, aunts and uncles and even grandparents would always talk about the series around the holiday table. And Jonathan seems so down-to-earth. Loved this episode. Thank you to Mr Frid and all the Dark Shadows cast.
I always enjoyed Dark Shadows and especially the great Jonathan Frid. Had no idea that he was on What's My Line. And he did it in character! I love it. Thanks for posting!!
I just realized in the overall scope of my life how much I enjoyed his/their performance. Who was so frightening to see as a child he utterly warmed my heart today at age 63
I didn't care much about Dark Shadows in the late '60s/early '70s when my babysitter would watch it every day but when Barnabas came on I was always at attention. Dude was a superstar back then.
I met Jonathan Frid at Shadowcon in Dallas, 1985, in the autograph line. He flirted with me. My girlfriend was impressed! I still have a brooding black and white photograph from the show with his admonition to "Keep to the Shadows". He was a classy act, all around.
This was done as promotion for House of Dark Shadows, while the show was deep into its 1970 Parallel Time storyline. Jonathan was so down to Earth

I had the pleasure of seeing him star in Arsenic and Old Lace at Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium in Tempe, AZ in 1986 or '87. He was hysterical! Frid was indeed a very talented actor. Too bad most people just know him as Barnabas Collins.
My Grandma was friends with Mr. Frids mother . I used to see him occasionally and YES he would wear the Cape and put in the vampire teeth for us kids .
Thank you for adding this! I was in eighth grade when Dark Shadows originally aired on KTVI (Channel 2) in St. Louis, MO. When school let out at 3 p.m. the girls all ran out the door screaming, running to get home to watch Dark Shadows. I was not a fan at that time. I did watch one episode, and it didn't move me. I made up for it years later when I purchased the coffin box CD set. It took me a little over a year, but I watched every episode. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cast was so talented! Thanks again!!
Nice to see another fellow St.Lousian and fan of " Dark Shadows" also! It was a Very good show and the actors were so Very Good in their roles, bar non.
I have to admit, the first year didn't wow me and I dropped it after the first couple of slow moving episodes ... I didn't watch soaps so I didn't know the formula of everything happens on Friday yet ... and then my friends started talking about vampires and things so I got into from there and enjoyed it quite a lot.
When I was 8,9,and 10 the music scared me so much I refused to watch the show, then my friends talked about it and I started turning the introduction music OFF and watched for many years.....Loved him!
My mom was a 'Dark Shadows' super fan. She recorded nearly every episode on VHS when it was airing on the Sci- Fi channel in the early 90s. Definitely one of the most unique soap operas on TV and the storylines were quite compelling. I had a crush on Alexandra Moltke aka Victoria Winters. Of course, Jonathan Frid's Barnabas Collins was the main event of the show. In my opinion he made Dark Shadows iconic.
I would run home from first grade to my Aunt Kack’s and watch it with her from under her coffee table. She’d watch for the Romance which was oblivious to me but the occasional vampire or witch Scared the crap out of me. Now to rewatch a Live episodic program that came Daily was to cool for school. So you get some line flubs or set walls that shake whenever the door is used and the occasional Boom mic or camera pops into frame. Fun show great memories.
I loved Dark Shadows the series welldone. Glad a movie was made with Johnny Depp . I read where Johnahan Frid got to see it. He must've been pleased. Thank you for the memories.
I was in like first grade. And my older sister and I loved to watch it. My Mom made us stop because she thought it would give us nightmares. (Mostly me I guess). So.. we started going to our friends houses to watch it. My Mom finally gave in later. But... I remember it. Then.. in the 80's they brought it back. Called it Barnabas. My co-workers and loved it. But it got cancelled after the cliff hanger. I was SO mad. 😊
~~ Jonathan Frid was always a delight in whatever he did. His famous character was so iconic that he was forever attached to it - ( or it to him ) - but make no mistake JF was a REAL actor - with great range, emotional depth and skill ..
I would haul ass home from 4 grade everyday to watch Dark Shadows, my best friend lived across the street from the school. If we knew we couldn't make it to my house, we went to his. His mom would always have snacks and stuff, fond memories. We also had the Acri Creature Feature on Saturday night a Midwest thing. Lol
The first time I noticed Dark Shadows, my friend and I were I were in second grade. We had to sneak and watch. We had no idea what was going on but we loved it.
I was addicted to Dark Shadows as a pre-teen. It reminded me of Shakespeare's Plays. When I grew up, I realized how self serving everyone was and can no longer watch it. Rest in peace Jonathan Frid AKA Barnabas Collins / Bromwell Collins.
I am also a huge fan and watched it as much as I could when it was on ABC. For those unaware, all episodes are available on the free TUBI streaming service. The are split between "Dark Shadows - the Beginning", which are the episodes prior to the appearance of Barnabas (and I think are good - and they have their share of ghosts and a "phoenix"), and the episodes that start with Barnabas are just called "Dark Shadows". FYI
I remember coming home from grade school and watching "Dark Shadows." It was my favorite show. I loved the vampires and especially the pretty girls. Begged my mom to see the movie when it came out. She told me it might be too scary for me, but I assured her it wouldn't since after all, I watched the tv show. When we went to see the movie, it was much scarier than I thought. I had to close my eyes during the scary scenes...lol. Mom was right.
Grade school here too, and the movie was so dark and gruesome and spoiler alert Evrybody Dies! So cool and the slo motion crossbow to the heart and crunching gurgling and ... Oh shut up.. Coolest movie for eleven year old ... And school was half mile away..never missed an episode...got the album, bubble gum cards...it was ridiculous...shut up.
Couldn't wait to get home from school to watch! Didn't get to see the movie until later, but I did have the board game. Lots of great memories watching again.
The movie was terrifying. An underrated classic that would be have been better than any other vampire movie if they had a bigger budget. But I agree....Barnabas was a very bad man in that movie, and I was not ready for that.
I loved Jonathan Frid! What I most liked about his performances was the show was filmed LIVE! Filming live you only get one shot at the take, no matter what. You had to keep going and do the best you could. If someone went up on (ie flubbed) a line, you had to pray the other actors would jump in and cover for you. When Jonathan blew a line, he fell right out of character. His accent vanished and you could see his panic, until he remembered the script. But he always soldered on like real a trooper and finished the scene. In some of these episodes his part was 15 or 20 minutes long. I know I couldn't remember 5 minutes of script and recite it let alone 20 minutes worth! These TV soap opera actors in the 60's and 70's were REAL Professionals!
Arlene Francis!!! I always remembered her name watching this show back in 1970 as a kid when I was only 5 years old! This was great...I wish they had more guesses!

Cliffhanger weekends were hard to get through! 😄
He was also Bramwell Collins, Barnabas' son in an alternate reality.

As did I... and my my mom often watched it too.
Me to 😊
I did to
Me too! I used to run home so I could get there on time
I couldn't wait to get home to watch Dark Shadows. I even had the Barnabas ring. Had the album with all the songs.
I watched "Dark Shadows" in the 70s growing up as kid and Jonathan Frid's performance was just AMAZING!!!!
Sixties too.
I'm glad he lived long enough to see multiple generations appreciate his acting skills
I got to see him live on stage in the production of
Arsenic and Old Lace. starring with Larry Storch, Jean Stapleton and Marion Ross. great show!
I loved Dark Shadows. I would come home from school and watched it daily. RIP Jonathan Frid.
I RUSHED from the bus stop to get home! Right before it started!!!
me, too
So many of us say the same thing. We ran home to watch. Then sadly they changed the time slot.
Dark Shadows was and will always be one of my favorite programs from my childhood in the '60's!
My siblings, neighborhood kids and I would watch it daily. My siblings and I went to meet the actors festivals throughout the years in NY.
An obviously charming man who scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.
I always thought for being a vampire, he was a gentleman
yes me too
@@ericsneary5430 And.....SO HANDSOME, ALSO!!!!

THE vampire. The only vampire that mattered. He was my childhood. Thank you for the post.
Barnabas and Quentin! 😊♥️
My friends had a thing for David Selby, but I adored Jonathan Frid. He was Dark Shadows.
I adored Jonathan too but I also had a huge crush on John Karlen as Willie Loomis. He and Barnabas together made a great duo.

That was the depth to Barnabas. You could see that he hated what he was and what he had to do. He had a soul.
I wouldn’t miss Dark Shadows for anything! I was so unhappy when it went off the air. There was nothing like it and can never be replaced. RIP to all the players who have passed.
I loved Dark Shadows as a young child in the 1960’s.
Me too!!! I loved him but I slept with my covers over my neck. As if that would help.
Same here. Always looked forward to watching Dark Shadows after school.
As a kid, I got hooked on Dark Shadows cause of Johnathan.
I remember how he came in as a gang buster and became the star of that show.
I LOVE DARK SHADOWS. RUSHED HOME EACH DAY FROM SCHOOL TO WATCH IT. I HAVE EVERY EPISODE (1225) ON DVD AND WATCH THE COMPLETE SERIES ONCE EVERY 2 YEARS.
