Great video! love the old model effects! they still look better than the cg ships that replaced them! they have a physical presence that gives them a more real feel than pure cgi effects alone! its a shame the earth spacedock would never again be seen on the big screen after "the undiscovered country" I never understood why because it did exist in the TNG era
glad to know i'm not the only one. all the follow on series and TNG movies were great - at least great enough to feed my hunger for more ST, but the TOS cast, especially in the reboot movies (2, 4, and 6) were real heart touchers for me. yep, tears when they come out victorious and sail the stars again.
Oh my, James Horner's score on this movie. When laid over this scene it takes many of us, myself included, somewhere words can't describe. For me this art in the truest sense.
They don’t make movie sound tracks like they used to… every Star Trek film soundtrack save for the reboot was and is iconic in every aspect. I can literally see these scenes in my mind from the sound track alone. Priceless!
Love this scene in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. The Captains use of Scotty & Uhura's first names and their replies of 'sir' showing their friendship and respect gained over their years together! Certainly one of my favourite TOS films...! 🖖
One of the greatest space structures ever built. The new Spacedock in 2401 just doesn't compare to this beauty. Not to mention, the USS Enterpise and the USS Enterprise-A are gorgeous ships. I got a little teary eyed when he said "My friends, we've come home". I finally get it.
I miss this kind of excitement in a movie. For we old trekkers, these movies brought out every emotion, and still do. James Horner's score is so moving. Every single actor on que. Spectacular ❤
I love the scene steeling Enterprise our of space dock, its by far one of the best, building up tension as they approach space dock doors and then the movement of Enterprise in the Z access as it maneuvers away from the doors with Excelsior in pursuit. That must have been something to coordinate considering everything was done with models. Though I know they were using motion control computers to run the stop action and could recreate any part of that action for different layers of the process. Matts and what not. Sorry to ask, but could the audio be boosted by several dB's? I've got both You Tube cranked and computer volume and speakers all the way up, and it's still very low audio. I wish the internet had a standard audio level that could be followed, some stuff is very loud then other stuff comes up low. I suspect this video is low because it came from original clips with 5.1 audio, and the dynamic range is just that quiet to start with. Thanks, I appreciate you finding all these clips; I always loved seeing that space dock.
I noticed the audio level is low, too. But, yes, the stealing of the Enterprise is my favorite scene from any of the Star Trek movies. It's beautiful and exciting. Horner's music really underscores the majesty of these gorgeous ships.
NervousEnergy Hey, don't worry about it. The visual quality of the vid is excellent, thanks for this wonderful compilation! This makes me want to just go watch the entire film again. :-) And, you're right-the spacedock is magnificent. It fits organically into the Star Trek universe.
I ❤ Jimmy Doohan. He may not have been an A-List actor, but he always made you feel good when you saw him. He was so nice to me when I met him at a convention. Also: RIP, Mr. Sikking. He was perfect in that role!
The gal who played Lt. Valaris (sp?) was rather nice looking, even with having the sides of her head shaved a bit. I loved it how everyone's head turned towards her when she said, "May I remind the captain..." Kirk just smiled at her and said, "You heard the order, Lieutenant." The expression on her face was priceless. 🤣
Lt. Valeris is played by a pre-Sex and the City Kim Cattrall. The role was originally meant to be Kirstie Alley reprising Lt. Saavik from Wrath of Kahn, but IIRC Leonard Nimoy objected to the character being a traitor, and thus Valeris was created as an expy of her. That's also why the reaction is what it was amongst the crew - it was meant to remind Kirk of the last time Saavik quoted regulations at him that he ignored.
That's an implication about Kirk's career and favourite job . In Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, Mc Coy says to Jim that he should take back the commanding of the Enterprise
Traditionally the commander of a ship is addressed as Captain, even if rank is lower than captain, hence captains chair. Admirals never to my knowledge command a ship. They may be on board and command several vessels such as a task force and the vessel is referred to as the flagship since the admirals “flag” is raised to show his/her presence, but the individual ship is commanded by someone else. Star Trek seems to loosely follow naval tradition but deviate when the writers want to.
As big as spacedock is, both V'ger and the 'Whale Probe' from ST4, absolutely dwarf it. When the whale probe passes by, spacedock is a little bigger than the size of that blue orb suspended from the probe itself.
As an Engineer I agree with Mr Scott, the more complicated they make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop it up! Just because its newer doesn't mean its better!
That Guy...Brian You're never going to get an objective answer to that question, most people have made up their minds one way or another! I for one prefer the original Star Trek movie run because I prefer those movies, the cast and ILM model effects.
For 8 years when going to uni and being stressed out, I always ate a big pizza and watched The Voyage Home after being done with exams or big assignments. Despite meager income and cramped living quarters, those where the good ol' days.
I absolutely loved what Scott did with excelsior's transwarp computer drive-" The more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain..."😂😂😅 !
@ SETX Bubba. The Excelsior's bridge looks absolutely garish compared to the beautifully designed Enterprise bridge from ST:TOS ( beautifully designed that is, with the exception of the failure to install a second turbo lift elevator and to bolt the chairs to the floor of the bridge).
It's TERRIBLE. I think it was just thrown together because they didn't want to waste a ton of money on a set that had less than ten seconds screen time--
+katakisLives Well, the design concept dated from the Federation-Klingon War so it was almost certainly intended to accommodate and shield a reasonably sized fleet if necessary. Later, tensions between the Klingons and Federation ease while the Romulans go into isolation for many years. So, while ships get larger there is less need to have as 'many' of them in a standing battle fleet, at any one station.
@@John-wg6xw Doesn't need to be. They can transport materials from other planetary systems in. But more so, energy is abundant so just use it to create matter, i.e. industrial replicators.
I haven't seen this movie since it came out. Did they just bring the Enterprise to space dock, and then immediately leave? Of were scenes cut from this clip?
9:26 the ship resembled a cast iron water pipe with the ends welded up. This ship is likely the least imaginative ship ever designed in Star Trek, makes me wonder if the writer had plumbing problems that week. Thanks for sharing i enjoyed the video.
Mirin Brah Obviously it's because having the illusion of zero-G on set would be prohibitively expensive and difficult to film, but in-universe, I have always thought it must be because the gravity generators keep a charge long after the main power to them is cut off. Like how just because you lose power to your house, doesn't mean your house gets cold right away, or your fridge gets room temp. Entropy takes time.
compmanio36 I really didn't need an explanation to a fictional problem, but thanks. I was just pointing out that their writers just completely ignore the subject, but don't mind losing all power on a ship for hours. It's a plothole.
+compmanio36 - Scientists are searching for the sub atomic particle named Graviton. This can occur at the CERN. The particle might exist in a highly excited state leading to an exotic element..or we might be able to restrain the particles in a Gravity boot and use as needed. There is a Theory that we can actually exceed light speed to the 10th power. This is exactly what we will need to cover the vast distances in our Universe. It might also open portals to other dimensions as well as open worm holes. I'd take the first flight or space escapade.
+compmanio36 It would be pretty poor if they hadn't mastered some kind of artificial gravity on a faster than light ship of the 23rd century! there was that scene in Star Trek 6 when the gravity on the Klingon ship was sabotaged so as well as life support the artificial gravity plating must have its own reserve energy power!
31 years have passed since that film was made and the effects still look amazing.
41 years now.

First movie I saw in theatres, totally mesmerized. The James Horner soundtrack still reaches a part of my soul that's locked to everything else.
I still get tears in my eyes when I watch this
glad to know i'm not the only one. all the follow on series and TNG movies were great - at least great enough to feed my hunger for more ST, but the TOS cast, especially in the reboot movies (2, 4, and 6) were real heart touchers for me. yep, tears when they come out victorious and sail the stars again.
Half the doors don't work and guess whose job it is to fix them. I always loved Scotty.
this will continue to be one of my favorite scenes.
This is the best analog video I have ever seen,
what real star trek looks like..
What does fake Star Trek look like?
@@carsonthomas8678 JJtrek, STD, Picard
The sound track makes the whole scene intense!
The greatest space crew ever.
Doesn't get better than the original cast. 🖖
🖖🏻
Oh my, James Horner's score on this movie. When laid over this scene it takes many of us, myself included, somewhere words can't describe. For me this art in the truest sense.
Great scenes and great music too. Nice to see another Reliant-type ship at around 9:05.
how did i never notice that?
4:06 - What is the rod that the Excelsior captain carries with him? He also has it as he sits down in the captain's chair.

Great post- ILM really did create magic that stands forever
Frustratingly I can't find a way to boost the audio without reuploading the clip entirely.
NervousEnergy Hey, don't worry about it. The visual quality of the vid is excellent, thanks for this wonderful compilation! This makes me want to just go watch the entire film again. :-) And, you're right-the spacedock is magnificent. It fits organically into the Star Trek universe.
Marcus Damberger The doors Mr. Scott - aye sir, i'm working on it! lolol
Marcus Damberger James Horner's music helps a lot with this. He will be sorely missed.
She looked good in Mannequin, but I think Big Trouble in Little China would be the winner for me.
Kim Catrall.
@@Poizenne A true beauty she is. Even now.
"You'll never sit in the captain's chair again." ...but he was already an admiral.
That's an implication about Kirk's career and favourite job . In Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, Mc Coy says to Jim that he should take back the commanding of the Enterprise
Normally, his career would've been finished and he'd be put on trial, convicted, and imprisoned.
I like when Kirk orders Sulu to jump to warp you can see that Sulu sets impulse to 0.0 and sets warp engines to 0.5 Genius!
Thanks for a really nice set of clips that you put together, as it brought back many Pleasant memories!
this is one of the best moments of all star trek big screen film.
That’s just that the music just added to. It was fantastic. Well done great movie.
As an Engineer I agree with Mr Scott, the more complicated they make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop it up! Just because its newer doesn't mean its better!
This film has more elegance in just one of its sequences than both the new Star Bleck movies combined.
Miller Animations Those are all superior to JJ Abrams' Star Trek, which is what I was obviously referring to.
Miller Animations I guess you've assumed I care what you think. Strange.
Despite meager income and cramped living quarters, those where the good ol' days.
the score is just perfect.
I absolutely loved what Scott did with excelsior's transwarp computer drive-" The more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain..."😂😂😅 !
the look on rand as she coming in as if to say ho dear God
At 4:16 you see the staff person just watching something backing up and wonder, what's going on??
@ SETX Bubba. The Excelsior's bridge looks absolutely garish compared to the beautifully designed Enterprise bridge from ST:TOS ( beautifully designed that is, with the exception of the failure to install a second turbo lift elevator and to bolt the chairs to the floor of the bridge).
It's TERRIBLE. I think it was just thrown together because they didn't want to waste a ton of money on a set that had less than ten seconds screen time--
Kenn Toomey yes, exelsior in 6 looked much nicer
Great compilation. Thanks for posting.
Ohhhh, the video and audio quality is100%, Thank you.
One of the few times you can see that James Doohan is missing a finger.
Doohan missing finger I believe was injury from WW II. The producers Original series always carefully filmed so couldn't see his hand missing finger.
@@paulhunter6742His finger was shot off in Normandy during D-day or right after.
@9:11 that really goes to show how massive the whale probe truly was - my God!
What an _excellent_ montage of the Earth Spacedock !! Live Long and Prosper. 🖖🥃
Apparently 1/4 impulse going forward is way faster than flying backwards when you consider the scenes for Star Trek III and VI.
+Cougar Land It's more of a throttle than an actual speed.
@@OpenMawProductions So 1701-A has a much higher throttle than 1701? okee dokee.
All that technology and an old 20th-century CRT monitor!
Loving the little details, like the refit Crossfield class just to the left of the Enterprise at 01:16.
The best ship and the best star fleet crew.
The dimensions and scale here are all over the place lol
Still looks pretty and beautiful
Space dock is enormously huge.
+Drrck11 Especially when you consider it was later able to easily accommodate galaxy class vessels.
I don't think there is enough raw material on Earth to build all those ships and that immense space dock.
@@John-wg6xw Doesn't need to be. They can transport materials from other planetary systems in. But more so, energy is abundant so just use it to create matter, i.e. industrial replicators.
...James B Sikking playing the same part as he did in Hill Street Blues: a pompous, conceited, arrogant so-called leader; good to see him again.
"How can we have a yellow alert in space dock?" Still once of my favorites.
I haven't seen this movie since it came out. Did they just bring the Enterprise to space dock, and then immediately leave? Of were scenes cut from this clip?
@1:53 look at the small monitor to the left, to me it sure looks like the death star plans?
@3:43 Chekov tells Kirk "Commander Starfleet on emergency channel he orders you to surrender this vessel". AWESOME!
"wessel"
@@laszlokaestner5766 Of course! Great point
9:26 the ship resembled a cast iron water pipe with the ends welded up. This ship is likely the least imaginative ship ever designed in Star Trek, makes me wonder if the writer had plumbing problems that week. Thanks for sharing i enjoyed the video.
[stares in resistance is futile]
Good old Star Trek. Ships losing all power, and yet gravity inside the ship never fails.
+Mirin Brah Same with life support, never seems to be a concern. lol
I bet they installed tractor beams on that space station after this little stunt.
Swarm509 You know Kirk would find a way around that. lol
Swarm509 I'm pretty sure they already have them but think about it it's Scotty disabled The Excelsior the space dock would have been Child's Play
Im sure they would of found a way around that.... i mean the guys in the space door control booth were absent.......
Pretty clear the Starfleet of this era and even into the TNG era was pretty lax and far too complacent.
Probably on Tuesday!
They didn't get the perspective right in regards to the ship approaching the space dock doors @ 0:17- 0:23, the ship is going to be too big.
When Enterprise leaves spacedock the way it slides though space and Horner's bgm is pure magic!
I love Rand's look of dismay and head shake. "What did they do to my ship?"
