Mykal (pronounced Michael) is one of the 4 original founding members of VoicePlay. He was their high tenor back then when they started their barbershop quartet in 1997. After a couple of years Mykal moved on to a successful Broadway career.
@@ESClone27 Yup. Geoff was the bass, Layne the baritone, Earl the tenor, and Mykal the high tenor. Back then they were called 4 The Love as a barbershop quartet in high school, before they added Scott Porter as beatboxer and became 4:2:Five. When Scott left for a succesful career in acting, Layne stepped up as the beatboxer instead. It wasn't until 2012 they changed their name to VoicePlay.
@@huldradraco I find it so hard to believe that Earl was not the high tenor. He has such an a high voice and so piercing. Maybe he developed it after Mykal left?
A recent performance of Mykal’s shows off his broadway chops “stars and the moon”. Would love to see him perform on broadway! You also see him briefly in Voiceplay’s “Just sing” with another super high note towards the end.
This was my favorite song from the movie. The combination of the menace of Scar and the hilarity of the goofball hyenas always appealed to me. I’ve heard from reactors who know a lot more about music that Eli is probably the most versatile singer, not only because of his range which is impressive, but the different tones he can put on his voice. He can sound angelic, he can riff, he can rock out. And he is an excellent team player. When Earl left, he sort of got moved into that high tenor position which meant some adjustments on his part. I am really happy to see that he is being featured more often than in the past. I think everyone expected Geoff to stay way down in the basement on this one. But personally I love his rock belts with those low notes sprinkled in rather than being the focus. I imagine that “meow” of his didn’t feel very good when he did it. But it’s pretty darn impressive! When it’s a song like this, or Oogie Boogie, or even Hellfire where it just calls for him to be the featured artist the other do an excellent job of supporting him. But generally, after looking at their older videos, they seem to do a pretty good job of spreading out the work among them on most of their pieces. And actually, Jeremy Irons is not the only one that sang it. When they did the “ you won’t get a sniff out of me” he blew his voice out on that growl. Jim Cummings, who was voicing Ed, the dimwitted hyena, had to finish the song for him. The guy must be a really talented voice actor because even going back and listening to it I can’t really tell.
@@hwyla4416 Wow! I thought it was a reach for him to also be the dimwitted hyena Ed. I loved watching Winnie the Pooh when my son was little, but Tigger was our favorite😆🐯
Mykal (Michael) was one of the original members but he really wanted to be on Broadway. Check out VPs Just Sing was done during covid and they did Zoom to get the people that have been members or sung with VoicePlay. Mykal is there too. If you react to Just Sing, keep the captions on so you will know who everyone is and what is their claim to fame. You'll see the different musicals Mykal has been in and bunches of other stuff. Geoff has said that VP needs to make the song their own instead of just copying the original.
Thanks for another great VoicePlay reaction. They had six fog machines going for this video. Eli could fully control the four new ones purchased for this shoot. They do excellent work across the board.
@@ESClone27 They only had two before they needed more for this one. Kathy said in the BTS that Layne ordered one to try out for this video (at his home, LOL). Liked it so they ordered three more. Eli remarked that they were a little finicky to set up but he figured it out. I agree, more is better, and definitely needed for this video. Eli's lighting work was also superb.
The Lion King is actually one of my least favorite Disney movies but I absolutely love this version of "Be Prepared" by VoicePlay. This is a Layne arrangement and I think it's brilliant. Thank you for using captions. Did you notice the little additions in them? In the "Hyena" section when they're talking about prizes, they've added in "meat, we repeat", "endless meat" and "treat" in the captions and then when Geoff does his roar the caption says "meow". I see Huldra already filled you in on Mykal in her comment. I would add you may want to take a look at Huldra's channel as she just released a great comparison of the 3, yes 3, versions VoicePlay has done of this song over the years. Also, the guys have mentioned that, since Mykal was not as heavily featured in this as they prefer for their guest artist, that plans are in motion for him to join them again soon were he will be featured more. Also, he was featured in their multi-guest artist video "Just Sing" that was released during the Covid lockdown. Love your reaction, as usual!
Thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah, thanks to the amazing community around VP it is safe to say, I am learning a lot about them and appreciate them all the more. Sub titles.. meow.. waa haa haa haa!
I understand that Mykal will be featured in Voiceplay's Halloween feature later this month. I really look forward to it. They released a tiny teaser short already.

Holy mackerel! seriously? that is amazing. Never knew that! No wonder they worked so well. And now that you say it, yes Broadway makes sense.

Earl could sing high back then as well, but Mykal could go even higher.

What’s really surprising about Jim Cummings singing Scar? Is that he’s the voice of Winnie-the-Pooh. Can you think of two more disparate voices?

@hwyla4416 - that is so crazy! Winnie-the-Pooh goes dark... did not see that coming.
@janetdw - I totally agree with you. They are all like Swiss Army knives (pocket versions). They have more voice blades than one could find uses for!

I totally agree and they most certainly inject VP into any song they cover. Some more a nod to the original, others absolute rewrites or overhauls!

I think fog machines are like cow bell. Needs more fog machines. XD

Voiceplay working their way through their "ACA Top 10 Disney Villains Medley" 6 ? of 10 full songs down who's next? Really enjoyed your reaction.
Thank you for watching. I would love for them to do Hades from Hercules... wait, did he even sing? If not, they should totally create an original!

I can't even imagine. His Broadway persona was showing even in this. Looking forward to it!
Cesar can hit whistle notes. Cesar is right up there with Makil at the end. I believe Geoff goes lower than Jeremy Iron.
Oh, totally agree with your evaluation of Geoff vs. Jeremy. I just appreciated Jerremy's rendition way back then when bass was not nearly as popular.
I have never seen Lion King, but, totally unnecessary. Voiceplay is absolutely wonderful!!!!
Agreed, seen or not seen, the talent they have indeed makes this a song worthy of listening to!
Interestingly enough, Jeremy Irons hurt his voice in the recording of this song, and another vocalist was brought in for the latter half.
Thanks to you and others reminding me in the comments, I do remember that story. Can't believe I forgot considering how big it was!
