I also get the real feeling of Motown especially in the beginning. There’s something very streetcorner harmonies all about it. Later on it does veer up into those gospel roots. And it’s just absolutely beautiful throughout. I think part of the magic is that they leave their egos at the door. Sometimes it’ll seem like one of them hardly has any lines, but they are providing support for all the others. In another release they may be the lead. But they always make sure that the featured artist gets some solo time even if it’s not a lot like it was when Mykal was a hyena .

I had been hoping that VoicePlay would cover "Stand By Me" eventually. Mykal was the perfect collaborator for this one. It's always a treat when Layne sings more. A lovely song with a beautiful message about true friendship. Thank you for another reaction to VoicePlay. They always make me smile happily.

He conveys absolute conviction and sincerity while echoing the heart's cry of a world drowning in the hatred and wars imposed on us all by tyrants who desire power over the love of all humankind. I cry every time I listen to this and yet not listening is simply not an option. Thank you for a lovely commentary on this beautiful human and his extraordinary musical gift.

I cried when I first heard this on patreon and once again when I heard it for the first time on TH-cam. I agree that it climbed to gospel music and touched my soul. Amazing.

I have yet to find anything by Tim Foust, or any of the other artists that you mentioned, that is not phenomenal. I really love Tim's doo wop stuff. I am not a music scholar by any means, but I believe the way male voices are ranked is lowest to highest - bass, baritone, tenor, high tenor

Mykal is one of the founding members with Geoff Layne and Earl in 1997 under the name 4thelove. They sang on street corners and in front of businesses. This is one of the songs they sang. So it is fitting they did it again. They did the video this way to show him how they do their shorts videos and give him the Oviedo Mall experience of those shorts in Orlando FL. This is where Pattycake Productions is located, the studio where they and Geoff film most of their videos. Pattycake is owned by Layne and former member Tony Wakim. They do original mostly Disney related videos. A few aren't Disney but still original.

I always loved this song, and now even more! 🤯❤ When the group was originally formed, with Layne, Geoff, Earl and Mykal, Mykal was tenor 1, and well deserved!

Yes, I agree, it did turn to gospel towards the end. I think part of the doo wop feel in the beginning was because back when Mykal was singing with them originally that was probably more prevalent in their style. Geoff has commented that he feels pretty sure they used to sing this in their high school boys restroom (along with other stuff). That would have been before Geoff and Layne got so incredibly talented and experienced with arrangements. So, I can see Layne beginning this that way as a throwback to those days. For one thing, Layne would not have been beatboxing yet for the group. So they would ALL have singing lines. Regarding the mall setting - they said they wanted Mykal to have that particular experience with them. I suppose because it is an integral part of their monthly work. And yes, Layne’s beat are layered in. All of their music goes at least to the point of initial production before they do video. They still actually sing their parts during filming, but that is pre-recorded, for the best sound. Actual sound in a mall would have too much echo with that high ceiling and empty hard surfaces.

They did such a fantastic job on this. I remember loving this song back in the day (great movie too!) and I so appreciate VoicePlay covering so many great older songs. In the BTS both Geoff & Layne were saying how much they really loved Eli in this one and Eli started to say he was trying to hold back but both Geoff & Layne quickly said we know - Eli didn't want to interfere in any way with showcasing Mykal. This is yet another reason why I love these guys so much. They are a family & they treat their guests as family too, although in this case Mykal sort of is family, especially for Geoff & Layne. Great reaction as usual and yes, I've watched several other reactors who made a similar comment about the gospel sound towards the end.

I was grinning the first couple of times, then crying after that. Absolutely gorgeous!!!

🤣 You know someone has become a fan when they get happy/excited at a Layne singing part 😜 It's so rare that he does it, and we all enjoy it so much 🥰 Other songs where Layne sings would be "In the Air Tonight", "Moana Medley", "Frozen II", or "I Can't Make You Love Me" (no beatboxing, Layne stays in the backup vocals). Also, I think the reason they work so well together is that there is a sense of "unity": no one is trying to hog the spotlight, there is no clash of egos. When one of them has a solo bit, they do their thing, and then they peacefully give up control and "melt" back into the mix (or the baseline, in Geoff's case 🤣).

Wasn't this just the BEST? They pre-record, each in their own personal studio, then it gets assembled by the arranger, in this case, Layne. Layne likes adding extra beatbox tracks... and after all, this one is his, so why not? Loved your comment on the mirroring: seems to me it's a standard skill in choruses, because the goal is to sound unified. But not so much in pop music, and most pop vocalists don't appear to know how to do it. Or have too much ego to be willing to, I don't know which. But VoicePlay are generous performers who focus on creating the best possible art pieces --- they follow where the music points.

Great reaction to this Ben Rector cover. It's just one of the songs on their new album, Any Kind of Christmas. It was just released on November 1.

The main beatboxer is Adam Rupp sitting next to Tim (gray hair). Chance (knit hat) did do some beatboxing before but love his voice. He also writes songs as in Skull and Bones. To hear more Chance, try I Can’t Outrun You, Helplessly Hoping, Yours. They’re great songs. Love this song and holiday. Can’t wait to see my son. Good one ES! HF is goofy a lot, love that about them.

Such a beautiful song the guys did a great job on this song by Ben Rector. Rob did take the lead and Adam Chance aka Chance does have an amazing voice. Believe it or not but all the guys can beatbox to degree not to the level of Adam R. Chance is great at making string instrument sounds and Rob is an absolute amazing whistler and Adam B has learned how to do the Nomonica. Tim and Chance both do solo work also Adam Chance - Folk, Sea Shanty , Country and has beautiful original songs Tim - 50-60’s, Doo Wop , Country and beautiful original songs Tim and Chance have collaborated with Hound And Fox and Peter Hollens all channels are worth checking out

All four members of the Bass Gang are in that category of bass singers, where the range is just "yes". And yes, they routinely multi-track themselves. They live on three different continents and met online, so they never had any need to limit their arrangements to what could be performed live, and they've leaned heavily into that flexibility from the beginning.

He's amazing. As are the rest of Home Free. Tim is something special. Thanks for the Home Free and Home Free-ish reactions.

I love watching ppl enjoy the music that i love. This whole album is amazing. His stuff with peter hollens is also fantastic. Between his stuff with home free, his solo stuff, and his album with Peter, there is always an amazing song to fit the mood.

Tim is one of the most incredible bass, tenor and everything in between singers around 😊

I'd love to hear you react to more Bass Gang. Marwan Ayman has some solo stuff out on You Tube and he take the lead in their cover of "Arabian Nights" (from "Aladdin"). I recommend that song highly and it shows Marwan's vocal range (very impressive). Peter Barber is an opera singer and he also has some solo stuff out on You Tube (non-operatic). He took the lead on Bass Gang's cover of "Gaston" (from "Beauty and the Beast")--again I high recommend this. The other member is Tomi P (he's from the Czech Republic and his real name is Tomaz Last name pronounceable to English speakers) and he prefers to go by Tomi (pronounced Tommy). If you listen to Tomi speak, he does have a slight accent, but his accent has gotten much better. I really love The Bass Gang. They have improved vastly from when they first started. They were good then--now they're right on up there with Voice Play and Home Free if you ask me (I'm sure some Home Fries and Voice Play fans will argue with me on that statement). But I think they're all really spectacular and am happy to listen to any of them.

Highly suggest Marwan’s cover of “This is Halloween” sung in many different styles. It’s a hoot! And ‘‘tis the season.

They are named The Bass Gang, but that doesn't mean most of them don't have amazing vocal ranges. Peter Hollens is a long established a cappella artist and has collaborated with more other artists than I can remember right now. Go check out his channel.

I hope you listen to more of The Bass Gang! Also, their youngest member, Marwan Ayman, has done some fantastic "lone" work (not quite "solo" work, because he, like the rest of The Bass Gang, does quite a bit of multi-tracking) and collaborations! They all do, really, but Marwan's Halloween releases are particularly good.

Love The Bass Gang and Peter Hollens both have some very interesting Halloween videos. This is what I love about Voiceplay, Peter Hollens and Bass Gang having fun and not taking themselves too seriously while making amazing music. Not afraid of being silly. Love Ghostbusters.

I would love to see geoff and mitch do something together. That would be insane.

Ever since I heard Geoff’s laugh in “Enemy” I thought he sounded like Vincent Price in the OG version. He absolutely killed it here. Also, the Glee version is so ingrained in my head that I kept trying to mash this up with “Heads Will Roll.”

I like that they're all wearing red and black as a homage to the original constuming by Michael Jackson, but none of them copied it. I really enjoyed this, and yes, that is Kathy as the first zombie!
