For the unititiated, these GM 6T4x series trannies are known to break the 3/5/R wave plate and then breaks the 3/5/R circlip and the first indication is reverse goes away. I have just done one of these and I put in $1000 of parts from Rockauto to rebuild it. Certainly do not drive them when you start losing reverse! Damage compounds dramatically if you do.

Our trans guy said one of the solenoids had a open short and he did a full rebuild and it was $1150. Maybe next time we get one rebuild we can do a video on it.

@@grandmasgarage3183 Yes, that is an easy fix if the solenoid goes, but in that case I would expect some codes. With my hardware failure, I had no codes as all the solenoids and the TECM still worked fine but the 3/5/R piston could not physically compress the pack without the circlip to prevent it all moving in the direction of the engine. My extra costs came from a damaged sun gear, reaction carrier, a sprag and a new 3/5/R drum, all up cost USD 1200 for parts when you remember I am in Australia, and have the Fedex shipping cost as part of that figure. I also put in a Sonnax drum saver kit as insurance so this does not happen again. I would like to see a detailed rebuild video on a 6T40 or 6T45 if you do one.

Just curious on how much it cost to get the transmission rebuilt. I got one I’m pulling now and can’t make up my mind as far as rebuild or replace with a used one.

I would get a remanufactured one from the dealer or an auto parts store depending on the age of the car. If it’s a 2011 like this one, just get a used one with a warranty and put that in. You’re probably going to be looking around three to $4000 for a rebuilt one. Rebuilding one is not something you want to just do in a shop.

I have a guy that does nothing but rebuild transmissions and he always cuts me a deal. This one only cost $1200 and he even replaced all clutches, gaskets, and a solenoid.

Is transmission removal for these fairly easy for a DIY? or a newbie

It’s not the worse one I have done but it is a front wheel drive car so they kinda suck. It’s not to bad one for a newbie and I had to do my first one too.

The guy must have been talking about a 4l60e when he talked about his truck loosing 3rd

I lost 3rd in the blue f350 you see in the other videos it’s got a 5r110 on a 6.0 diesel. The previous owner put a chip tuner on it and if you changed the setting when it was off it would change the trans pressures and they would slip. So it burnt up the clutches on third.

it would be much better if you guys show us how to take out the transmission. I understand that you have put up a lot of effort to shoot the video, but you are barking on the wrong tree. You are MECHANICS, not actors. BTW, y
