This has made my day much better. Just watching your video has cheered me up from life's troubles, especially when its showing one of my favorite Mario/Yoshi games.
I love when this happens. My day is terrible, and while I'm bummed out, I go into my subscription box, and see great videos like this one, and everything is a thing of e past.
I have the same experiences pretty much. Whether it be a SGB episode or a game review, just seeing that in my subscription box makes me a very happy man, even when everything else kinda bums me out. :)
11:45 The glitch you just performed is called 1-1 warping, where if you enter a load zone in a way the game doesn't expect to, you get warped back to World 1-1.
Ah! My all-time favourite 2-D platformer. This review means a lot. I grew up on the GBA version, in fact it came with my GBA so it's the first game that was actually "mine" rather than the family's too, so seeing the graphical distinctions are a nice surprise for me. But beyond that, everything you've said here is pretty much how I feel about the game. I really appreciate seeing my primary reviewer on TH-cam finally touch upon a game that means so much to me.
There were so many things that freaked me out as a little kid in this game that I'm still anxious just watching gameplay. It was a hell of a good time back then even if I had to be guided by my older sibling.
This game was fucking incredible. Also so much nostalgia attached to it. The art style still looks so great by today's standards. It looks like it could legitimately be one of those high quality indie platformers people still make. And no video game will ever give me the same kind of anxiety and terror in my heart as this game did fighting bowser. Seeing it run towards you demonically super fast really gets the heart pumping.
This game....this game holds the most value to me. It's the game I would spend countless hours playing with my mom. Racing to see who can beat the game first. How many bonus challenges we can get. And now that she's passed away, this game is even more precious to me. I have been feeling really depressed lately, so I decided to boot up Yoshi's Island cause it's music is like the perfect anti-depresent. And I think my dad remembered how much mom and I played this game too. As soon as he saw this game on my tv, I saw sadness come across his face and he just asked me "why". I told him, I just have happy memories of this game. I feel connected with my mom when I play it.
Wow that bonus room leading back to the first level is completely new to me, and I consider Yoshi's Island my favorite game of all time! It's pretty cool to be able to learn something new about a game so many years later
This game will probably remain one of my most memorable games. I only ever had the Game Boy Advance version growing up, and I probably put just as much time, if not more, into this game than Super Mario World (which I also had on the GBA, and maxed out the score and 100 percented). The only gripes I ever had with it would have been those weird vehicle power-ups and that incessant cry ;_; Also, great review Johnny!
this is without a doubt my favorite mario to date, amazing and quirky soundtrack and surprisingly complex, but still child friendly levels. also my favorite review of yours because you seriously share almost all the same memories i do of this game. :)
Great video Johnny! 👍🏽🙌🏽 As soon as the Yoshi’s Island title music hit at the beginning of your video, a flood of childhood memories came back of me watching my older brothers playing and beating the game. I even got to occasionally play too lol :P In all seriousness, Yoshi’s Island remains my all-time favorite SNES game that I still frequently play 💯
Yoshi's Island is one of my favourite Mario games, I would have it in my top 3 Mario games of all time, I think Yoshi's Island definitely has the best Boss fights in the entire franchise, great review Johnny :)
My younger me must have hated himself - I've completed the game to 100% twice at the age of 9 ^^ This game is so full of charme and creativity, it has a very special place in my heart!
Bro you are the man for these videos. Brings me back such good memory's and you elaborate on things I would relate to as a kid. Keep up the good work can't wait for the Mario 64 one
Fun fact: You can never get a bonus level in world 1- extra. This is due to limitations caused by poochy interacting with the player in that level. Also, that one bonus room seems like a wrong warp
I just played this game on the Switch Online & I had an total blast with the game. Like you mentioned before. When your not going for 100% completion, this game is absolutely fantastic. Gameplay wise is alot of fun with smoother controls, great level designs, wonderful gimmicks, great bosses, unique variety, catchy soundtrack & an charming game. But if you do want to 100% the game, than the game gets challenging and it will test you. Other than that, this is one of my favorite games on the SNES & one of the best games I've ever played.
Yoshi's Island...easily the best game from my childhood. Even though it was the GBA port, the game was still a ton of fun. I can easily remember myself spending hours playing the game trying to perfect each level (never did, but I got close xP). The levels, the artwork, the music...all of it was awesome.
This is probably my new favorite review not only by you, but in general. I love this review. Especially the part at 10:08. Yoshi's face after the frog.
Oh man, I have fond memory for this game in particular. It was the very first game that I've beaten on my own without my sibling's help, first played the game on the GBA, so it had all the additional stages exclusive to the GBA version. Completing the game wasn't the my top priority back then, but this game has a surprisingly complex design (being both beginner friendly and difficult) that I have no problem going back to. Pixel Art is top notch for this game, it has aged very well.
Great video as usual! I can't wait for your Mario 64 + Mario Sunshine opinion as well :) Love your channel, man! keep it up! I hope you will also tackle the 'newer' Zeldas one day, like The Wind Waker or the other Handhelds, Oracle of Ages/Seasons aso Greetings from Germany!
Yes! You're reviewing the 3D Mario games! Those are some of my favorite games of all time, so I'm glad to see that you're going to review them. This review was great too, it helped cheer me up!
Yoshi's Island, for a first Yoshi game in the series, it really kicks ass! Even if I never played this game, I still think that this game is fantastic. It's so sad that the Yoshi series is not that popular because of the modern games.
Yeah, getting AND KEEPING 30 stars is tough in the Yoshi series. What I tended to do was unlock World 1's mini game, and then farm it for items that give you 10-20 stars and magnifying glasses that reveal red coins and hidden obstacles. Made the game a lot easier in terms of getting 100%.
Glad to see you do some Mario videos again! Can't wait for the rest! When this "sequel" came out, little did everyone know it would eventually become it's own spin off series lol
Yeah. When you're not bothered of 100%, the game is absolutely amazing. It has smoothed controls, great level designs ( despite an few being long when your 100% the game ), wonderful gimmicks & bosses, catchy soundtrack & an well charming game.
If one were to count Yoshi's Island in the Mario Series proper due to its title I'd have to say it is, without a doubt, my favorite game in the franchise. It's not just nostalgia for you Johnny, I didn't play the game until 2010. I'm not saying it's perfect, or that it's the best game ever, but it's just so colorful, detailed, and fun, and that's what matters in a platformer.
I think the reason Yoshi's Island SNES wasn't released on the Wii/Wii U was Nintendo claiming they had difficulty emulating the FX chip. I'm guessing the GBA version uses something else.
@@sterlingmuse5808 And the Nintendo Switch Online SNES app has Star Fox 1 and the original version of Yoshi's Island (and Star Fox 2, for that matter)!
Haha! I never really noticed that Yoshi made that face when he got out of the frog! Damn, now I can't unsee that and it's engraved into my mind. Great review, though!
The glitch you found in 3-1 is actually a fairly known glitch in this game's speedrunning community called the Wrong Warp glitch. It occurs when Yoshi enters a warping area improperly and can sometimes warp you to the top-right corner of 1-1. This glitch can also be achieved by entering a downward pipe and jumping on the same frame.
Enjoyable as always to watch this review. I'm so anticipated to see what the reviews for the 3D Mario games end up being like (even if you critique them more than I thought since it helps give me a new perspective).
I was barely born around the time this game came out, but i grew up playing this game and man did this take me back! I still have the game and play it but hearing you talk about it reminded me of when i was still young and played it! The scariest part for me when i was growing up was when baby bowser turned into giant baby bowser, THAT SCARED THE CRAP OUTTA ME! Remember when Johnny said the reports of Megaman 7 didn't have the SNES ending? It used mode 7 and a lot of recent consoles have difficulty making or remaking those engines.
Damn, i love your videos so much. Suddenly i'm on the search for SNES cartridges and this game came up to my mind because i have the first game and i love it.
The only Yoshi game I've played was DS, and I quite enjoyed that one. I'll definitely buy this one on the Wii U VC. It's a shame it's the inferior port, though.
SilJeff I was surprised at the amount of negativity that game receives as well. Granted, I haven't played it in 5 or 6 years (if I remember correctly), so I might have to go back and reevaluate my thoughts. It might also have something to do with the fact that I hadn't played the original. Perhaps some people thought it didn't meet the same standard?
SashaandStorm I loved the original and I also liked the DS version. I really liked how you could have more babies than just Mario. Sadly the game was a bit shorter than the original and the stages weren't as unique as in the original. When I think of the DS version then there's not a ssinlge episode which pops into my mind, sadly.
Nova Bombe Having more babies than just Mario was something I liked as well. So one of the reasons that people didn't care as much for DS was because it wasn't memorable, at least compared to the original game?
On the note about babies; I still hate how Baby Wario, Baby Donkey Kong and stuff never made a comeback. I mean, I would LOOOOOVE having Baby Wario in a Mario Kart game. A lot more than having Baby Daisy or Baby Rosalina at least.
I particularly like the 3DS Yoshi's Island's take on the simple plot this series' titles all share. Baby Bowser has been harassing the Yoshis, but they can't find the guy...until a baby falls from the sky and is compelled like a magnet toward his brother, who's at Bowser's castle. It's less "We'll help you find your bro," and more "Hey, we can use this kid!"
12:48 The good thing is the SNES Classic and the recent SNES Online from the Switch include the original version on the get go, which is so much a blessing. 😊
Man I remember this game a LOT when I got the GBA port, (I never played the SNES version) but the port was good enough for me). I had a hell of lot of fun playing this game and believe it or not but I actually completed everything with a 100%. Though it took me quite a few years to get that percentage, but it was worth it for me, even though there was nobody there for me to brag about it,. Aw well I never liked bragging anyways, great review Johnny and thanks for reviewing this before the 3D titles, I can't wait until you get to the Galaxy titles
I'd bet the reason that they only have the GBA version for download is because they probably set that up easily with their in-house emulation tools, but for the SNES that Super FX chip complicates things greatly.
awesomeguy2009 Doesn't mean they could not ask for the rights Nintendo are just lazy not to mention it would probably lag since i bought Zelda Ocarina of Time and that lags for me so the SNES version of Yoshi's Island would probably not even work
yes a yoshi's island review one of my favorite games of all time and i will never forget getting to the final boss and hearing that awesome music for the first time

No. Nintendo simply doesn't have the rights to the Super Fx chip.
awesomeguy2009 Doesn't mean they could not ask for the rights Nintendo are just lazy not to mention it would probably lag since i bought Zelda Ocarina of Time and that lags for me so the SNES version of Yoshi's Island would probably not even work
It lags on the OG Wii. The Wii U is a MUCH more capable system.
awesomeguy2009 Yea but what nintendo put on virtual console needs to benefit both Wii U and Wii users
No. The OG Wii is dead.
yes a yoshi's island review one of my favorite games of all time and i will never forget getting to the final boss and hearing that awesome music for the first time
How the hell did you do the 1-1 warping glitch. For more details watch the Son Of A Glitch Yoshi's Island.
Love your reviews, man. Also stoked for a new marathon!
Johnny just watch Son of a Glitch. It will explain your 1-1 warp problem.
Thank you man for sharing your thoughts, I love this game deeply from my childhood... it has irreplaceable memories and feelings for me
Yessssssss johnny's here!
I don't know why, but Johnny's panicked yelling "FIIIISH!!" is just the funniest shit.
Please make a month of Donkey Kong! :)
may I mention (other then his previous review) that it took him 3 YEARS, to get back to reviewing Mario games, and seeing this video made my day.
I fucking lost it at 8:42. XD
