Cool vid, and I have to agree with the grab button, omfg I tossed my wife and daughter off the edge so many times... They won't play with me much anymore -_-
MMetelli I lost my shit during the table flip scene, and I lost it yet again in the "Team Player" part here. Seriously, I don't know who comes up with these ideas, but they are amazing.
4:44 Everyone who calls this game "Just the 3DS game in HD with 4 way multiplayer" *clearly* hasn't actually played it. "Nintendo makes the same games over and over again", *my ass*...
+BlueDragon992 Then those people go play Call Of Duty or something that gets a new sequel every few years, yes Nintendo does use the same "Formula" but then so does COD, so you can either dislike sequels that are frequently released every few years or you can like COD but not both.
I think the thing that bothers me is that people keep saying this about 3D World, while many of the same people conveniently ignore that the same could be said of Galaxy 2, which, while a really fun game, was definitely not innovative or really pushing Galaxy's formula that much forward.
Considering I played all of 3D World by myself...yes, it it the 3DS game in HD. That's not a BAD thing, but when you've played enough New Super Mario Bros., you get reeeeeeeal tired of it.
"Hey man, what're you playing? "Super Mario 3D World. It's a sequel to Mario 3D lan-" "ErhMAhGuRD, nINtedDUrk kePs on MilKIng THeiR frAnchisEs, they neEd to mAke something orIGinal" *Goes on to play COD, a game series which changes about as fast as erosion* Please, if someone can tell me where the logic in this is, I'll come dig it up with you.
My favorite 3D Mario game of all time. This game is just amazing. It's incredibly fun, the soundtrack is awesome (I can't get enough of World Bowser's Map theme) and the fact that Peach not only isn't kidnapped but is playable along with Luigi, Toad and Rosalina once you unlock her really shows that Nintendo can do something different with their franchises (that and I'm a huge sucker for platformers with multiple playables characters). "My pelvis doesn't go that way" ROFL
This is probably my 2nd favorite 3D Mario game right behind Galaxy 2. I love the bright colorful level design, the wide array of power-ups, all the different characters, and the soundtrack is pretty sweet. I especially love Double Cherry Pass and the remix of the Gusty Garden Galaxy theme.
no offence or anything but I find galaxy 1 to be the better game, sure galaxy 2 is good but its a bit overrated, it has a lot of padding with little to no changes, sure the same can be said about galaxy 1, but 100%ing galaxy one doesnt require you to play it as both luigi and mario, and galaxy 1 offered more new content than galaxy 2 which seemed more of the same thing with sure new things but not as much as galaxy 1, as for 3d world, I'll need to actually play that one, which I plan on doing, this game looks fun as hell
"I would like to see Mario return to a format like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario galaxy." says Johnny. 4 years later, we got Super Mario Odyssey! Such an awesome game!
I honestly love the 2D 3D Mario mix for 3D world and land. It brings the movement from its 3D games and its iconic staples from its 2D games flags, power ups, question mark boxes. It was a great game with new ideas as well. Look I know some people complain about it not being fully 3D in its exaction but relax just enjoy the game. I'm sure Nintendo will release a new 3D Mario game for the future that plays like 64 or Galaxy.
I haven't seen much of Super Mario Odyssey, but I hope it will be closer to Super Mario 64 in it's open-ended-ness and expansive control scheme, but also close to the 2D games in how the power-ups work, the blocks, and some moments of linear level-like platforming. Also, thank goodness the triple jump will be back. Hopefully the midair dive will be as well.
I played this by myself and was absolutely blown away by how much I fell in love with it. This is probably one of my favorite Mario games of all time next to Mario 64 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The graphics were beautiful, the soundtrack was phenomenal, I love being able to play as other characters, there was a ton of level variety, and the special worlds were tear-your-hair-out frustrating, yet still enticing enough for me to say "ONE. MORE. TRY." for hours on end. I already 100% completed the game, but just watching this review makes me want to go boot up a new save file and get lost in the game all over again.
The Mushroom and Flower worlds do deserve a thumbs-up for originality. Sure, they're made of older levels that are often just with tougher enemies, but others mix things up by being speedruns (like in Galaxy 2) or having different colors (including monochrome/black-and-white). That said, I don't go back to them much. Maybe I'll check them out more now that the Game Grumps are reminding me of them. I'm surprised at how quickly you brought these latest 3 reviews out. They're so well thought-out and highly edited.
That's an interesting concept, with the color changing and stuff. But I guess it bums people when they think they have two more worlds of game play but they just contain modified versions of previous levels. There could have been a better way to go about that concept so that people don't get annoyed by that.
Man Johnny is truly the best video game reviewer, I've spent my time with a lot of different youtubers and I've never enjoyed them as much as I enjoy Johnny, I mean he's actually FUNNY! I wish i could show more respect to him by subscribing multiple times! Keep your great quality up Johnny you as truly my favorite
just watched three or four of these johnny vs in a row and i am absolutely loving it... subscribed. Great work on these videos, Johnny your passion for the medium really comes across.
Matthew Matelli was later found buried with a Wii mote lodged in his esophagus. Great review, Johnny. I hope to see you guys try 3D World as a Let's Play soon.
I think the chaoticness is part of what makes this game so dang fun. I mean, from what I can tell the game is meant to be played competitively instead of cooperatively. the amount me and my friends have had trying to race to see who can get the green stars first or just simply screwing each other over so someone won't make it to the top of the flag pole. I did all the back tracking myself for the stuff I'd missed mind you, but everything after was just an incredible experience for me since this game just wouldn't let up throwing new things at you around every corner. Oh well, great review man!
Nothing ends a review better than Matt's laughter hahaha! Another brilliant marathon Johnny, much like the Mario games your videos have followed a really similar format for a long time, but they never fail to be entertaining! :)
SomecallmeJohnny, you picked a great time to upload this video, because the moment you uploaded this video, it was on my birthday, which was 4 days ago! And I gotta say Johnny, it was a really nice birthday present too, because I got a lot of laughs from the video! Thanks for making my birthday so damn awesome, John! ;)
7:26 I wonder what would happen if Johnny, Elliot, and Matt were put in a Smash Bros. game as unlockable characters. Or, they could be in the next Pokémon game and they could be using struggle on each other at this point.
Eva Snaer I think those two are the main reason that everybody wants him to have another zelda marathon, but I would like him to play ss and the handheld games as well.
+brokenSCART Nah, just the color pallet and the use of 1080p makes it look gorgeous. But it isn't as good looking as some of the great looking games on current gen hardware. Eg. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is beautiful as well.
***** It's 720p? Lol, didn't even know. I wasn't saying that it was shit looking. I certainly think it is gorgeous. I just say that it's not as good looking as current gen games. But this is a stupid argument because: 1. Wii U and current gen hardware shouldn't be compared because of how different it is. 2. Graphics don't really matter enough to be argued about.
+Magic Potato I'd argue that, artistically, it blows the tits off ANYTHING on the ps4 etc. Ps4 games are obsessed with looking as good as possible with lighting effects, shaders particles and so on but you're always close to a wonky texture or animation freak out. This is fucking. Solid. It's almost like playing a cartoon. It's so polished you can see your face in it. No frame rate drops, beautiful colours, stunning and natural looking effects, fluent animation... It's probably the most solid 3D I have ever seen. Look at that title screen. LOOOOOOOK AAAAAAT IIIIIIT
brokenSCART Well, hell yeah. But thats not what we were talking about... right? XD Tbh, as much as Mario 3D Land is gorgeous, I think it is nothing compared to some of the gorgeous games on current gen hardware. No, I am not just talking about games like Witcher 3, but since we are talking about cartoonish games, I'll use a cartoonish game as an example. Terraway is probably on par with Mario 3D Land, but something that truly blows it out of the water for me is Ori and the Blind Forest. Such a gorgeous game. I'd suggest to try it out one day to see what I mean. Imo, it looks 10 times better than Mario 3D Land.
This was a great marathon, Johnny! Loved every single one of the episodes! For the next marathon I hope for Zelda to come back.. or Month of horror games because... October. :D
R.I.P Miiverse. And interesting that Johnny mentioned they should do an updated formula of Mario 64 at this time, because that's exactly what they were working on.
AutZentus after you review one smash game there really isn't a point of making a review for the others. yeah there's new shit but not enough to grant it it's own review imo
Hey past Johnny! It’s me from the future! The world is shit but at least the games are awesome! I was actually upset when I got this game. It was Christmas of 2014 and I wanted to play the new Mariokart game ever since I was introduced to video games and Mariokart Wii at my local after school program. Because Mariokart 8 was so popular, my parents couldn’t find it. So instead, I got Nintendoland and Super Mario 3D world. I was pretty disappointed at first and I ended up resenting the game for a while. I wasn’t very good at it and I never really played it much. However, that all changed last year. I was bored out of my mind and I decided to set up my old Wii U in my room. I played through Super Mario 3D world and I loved it. Naturally, I was pretty excited when a remaster for the switch was announced. And because it was my birthday about a week before it came out, I decided to pick it up for the switch. This has become one of my favorite games of all time and being one of the only people to own a Wii U in my Highschool, I’m glad that more people are able to experience this game! Thanks for getting me into Mega Man by the way, that’s a franchise I learned lots about by watching your videos. Thanks for all of the entertainment and I hope you’re able to keep making good content! Don’t know why I’m typing so much and I’m not sure if you’ll read this but if you do, thanks!
Liked as soon as you started talking about cats. Idk why, it's just I didn't know you had cats and they're adorable and hearing you baby-talk them made my heart explode from awesomeness.
to be completly honest, this is what I think a 3D mario game should be. Dont get me wrong, I love galaxy and galaxy 2, and 64 is pretty good too, and sunshine is ok, nut these two really define "Mario" for me
I always look forward to watching the multiplayer playthroughs of this game. Like Johnny said, it will be an enjoyable if your friends knows how to play a Mario game. But it will be rage inducing if they don't. But its just too hilarious to hear and see them rage!
this was released the day after I beat the Crown-Crown level and this is like a reward like,"You beat this impossible level? Well then have a SomecallmeJohnny review."
Sonic games also manage to use up his time a lot more than other games. Just look at the Sonic 06 review; multiply its length by 4 and you have the length of Clement's review. That's scarily close.
Personally, I don´t think length was that much of an issue. As long as these reviews are enjoyable, thought-provoking and gives me something to come back to them much later in the future, I´m good.
I used to fuck with my friends when I played this by hitting the randomize characters button at the beginning of levels. It's even funnier if they're talking and not paying attention to the screen before it starts. Good times...
Question for everyone. Johnny did briefly comment on dealing with the game single player to get a nice feel for the game's qualities. What if it's the idea of having an equal experience for friends? While our playthrough of NSMBW was fun, I had played it before and as a result I knew of many surprises that got me the first time around. As such they wound up watching my character most of the time since I knew how to approach the levels instead of frolicking about carelessly. With all that in mind my question is if you have a deep fondness for coop would you feel it best to suspend a single player playthrough in favor of an ultimately better coop playthrough?
So that's one for multi. Funny that the hair pulling and screaming makes the game have that much more charm, really gets everyone invested and brings out the worst in us which ends with us all having a good laugh at how silly we sound.
I mean you gotta divide the anger, direct it all at one person and there isn't laughter and errors to drown out the actual legitimate insults. ...it also helps distract from any issues like that camera we're talking about, instead blame that dickhead who wanted to climb the mountain before everyone else!
BacklogAddict true. that is true for all "party games" speaking of, have you heard of the game fortune street? fuse monopoly, the stock market and mario party boards all in 1!
I'm honestly surprised you didn't make a Freedom Planet hook at the end of this video. Speaking of this video, your take on the game is spot-on to mine, except the fact that you need green stars to advance bugs me. I generally am not a fan of fetch quests required to beat the main portion of a game. As a sidequest, sure, but don't make me get 100 sun tokens/green stars/magic fart bottles to beat the main story.
You literally can breeze the levels in 3 minutes flat each if you ignore everything, the green stars are there to make sure you explore a bit more and most are in a convenient spot during your current path
You literally can breeze the levels in 3 minutes flat each if you ignore everything, the green stars are there to make sure you explore a bit more and most are in a convenient spot during your current path
I understand, but it's not like they give you much time anyway. A normal stage gives 300 seconds, which is 5 minutes. Getting a level done in 3 minutes with a 5 minute cap is reasonable, and forcing the player to hunt around can be frustrating. I don't mind it as a bonus objective though. I think New Super Mario Bros. (As well as 2, Wii, and U) handled it really well. But, to each their own.
Toxic Atom I'd say it's the time limit that's the real problem, not the green star collecting. There shouldn't be a time limit in a game like this. Collecting the stars without the stress would be fine to me because I like exploring for stuff, as long as the collectibles aren't cryptic. I doesn't make the game super short. And I'm sure there's someone out there who loves this game a lot more than he/she would because it has stars that you need to collect to continue, just like in Super Mario 64.
I didn't comment on the 3D Land review, but I hated that game, due to the fact that it didn't try anything new, and played it safe, which really made that game suffer. World is a huge step forward, but I do feel a couple of things need to be fixed. For one, that time limit needs to go. I get why it's there, but I feel it ruins the exploration factor that the game is trying to achieve. The single player mode, while fun, does tend to feel boring at times, but that's probably because I'm Mario'd out. The multiplayer, once again, is a pain in the dick, mostly due to the camera not focusing on the players. Regardless, 3D World is a massive improvement over the mediocrity that is 3D Land. :)
The time limit, they don't need to do anything. It's been a thing in all of the Mario Games. To restrain the player. (Unless you're talking b'out Galaxy 1 and 2, is where the Timed Purple Coin Missions and Speed Run Comets) to a time limit to get to the goal. But you can just go back and comb your way through the level carefully, but at the same time quickly. ( EDIT I just noticed I said, "... They do need to do anything..." I meant to say that they didn't need to do anything.)
I wouldn't say that I hated 3D Land, but I didn't lose any sleep once it went missing. I found the difficulty rather disappointing along with the lack of newish content.
*****. True. 3D Land is not a bad game, but I was horribly disappointed by it. Maybe I'll play it again, just with a different mindset. Also, Mega Man is a series I adore, despite the formula being the same. How hypocritical. :P
ooooh! Johnny! I just realized you should do a month of PAC-MAN, doing a review on the Pac-Man console games! (no not like namco arcade collectionsI meant stuff like Pac-Man Worlds 1, 2, 3 and I supposed the ghostly adventures, but that's open to opinion) and hell any other pac-man games I might not have seen or heard of that you might possess just saying, you've done mario twice, took care of mega man, did plenty of sonic I think since nintendo has brought us Pac-Man in smash bros, I think its only fitting that we give the yellow wedge of cheese some praise for his games! just an idea you should consider and by all means I'm not forcing it, just hoping you consider
Thank you, Johnny. I just got a Wii U and was deciding which games I could get. You made this look pretty fun. This is going on my list. I do miss playing Mario games. Also, lawl at the end.
"GET AWAY FROM ME" killed me.

"GET THAT GOD DAMN STAR CAPTAIN TOAD!!"

Johnny totally called Odyssey.
He has a tendency to predict the future.

Nah, just the color pallet and the use of 1080p makes it look gorgeous. But it isn't as good looking as some of the great looking games on current gen hardware. Eg. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is beautiful as well.
please, it's Piss4
*****
It's 720p? Lol, didn't even know. I wasn't saying that it was shit looking. I certainly think it is gorgeous. I just say that it's not as good looking as current gen games. But this is a stupid argument because:
LOOOOOOOK AAAAAAT IIIIIIT
brokenSCART
Well, hell yeah.
But thats not what we were talking about... right? XD
Tbh, as much as Mario 3D Land is gorgeous, I think it is nothing compared to some of the gorgeous games on current gen hardware.
I really enjoyed the marathon, Johnny! Looking forward to seeing future reviews that you do!
At 8:51 look at the back and you can see a giant 8-bit Luigi!
Are you Spider-Man? Your profile pic looks like him but your name says you aren't.
Thank you for doing the Mario Marathon. I enjoyed your reviews overall.
That's one game I haven't gotten yet. I NEED TO GET IT DANG IT!
Dude, you NEED to get it! It's definitely the Best and most enjoyable Mario game since Galaxy 2
What the hell are you waiting for? GO!
This would be me, except sadly I don't own a Wii U, and I am unlikely to get one any time soon.
9:17 Looks like someone is a really good prognosticator.
Atta' boy Elliot, when in doubt go for the wedgie.
This was a great marathon, Johnny! Loved every single one of the episodes!
For the next marathon I hope for Zelda to come back.. or Month of horror games because... October. :D
Johnny, Matt, & Elliot for Smash 4.
R.I.P Miiverse. And interesting that Johnny mentioned they should do an updated formula of Mario 64 at this time, because that's exactly what they were working on.
Yoshi isn't here cause he's committing tax fraud
2:11 I'm fucking dying
Can we get a kingdom hearts marathon
Forget that a smash bros. marathon should be next.
YAAAAAAAAS LING LING!
***** h, that would be too short. How about Johnny goes throught the Mortal Kombat games? I'd like to hear his opinions on Mythologies to 9.
Wouldn't 85% of the video be the plot summary?
AutZentus after you review one smash game there really isn't a point of making a review for the others. yeah there's new shit but not enough to grant it it's own review imo
Damn that bit after the credits had me in tears!
Aside from that though, another great review from you, John! Really enjoyed the entire marathon!
This video video had everything.
Cats
Johnny
Super Mario
And somewhat WWE
Best video review ever on TH-cam!
9:30-9:35 this man is going to love odyssey I guarantee it
Hey past Johnny!
Oh my god.... Your cats are made of pure preciousness. :3
The way he just yells "Get away from me!" and "Go, go, get that green star captain toad!" at around 2:05 makes me die laughing every time.
Liked as soon as you started talking about cats. Idk why, it's just I didn't know you had cats and they're adorable and hearing you baby-talk them made my heart explode from awesomeness.
to be completly honest, this is what I think a 3D mario game should be. Dont get me wrong, I love galaxy and galaxy 2, and 64 is pretty good too, and sunshine is ok, nut these two really define "Mario" for me
great review but my favorite part is johnny and elliot fighting matt. lololololol
Just had to come rewatch before watching Round 2...
I always look forward to watching the multiplayer playthroughs of this game. Like Johnny said, it will be an enjoyable if your friends knows how to play a Mario game. But it will be rage inducing if they don't. But its just too hilarious to hear and see them rage!
At 6:50 look at the background near the sun set. You can see a 2d Luigi swimming by.
this was released the day after I beat the Crown-Crown level and this is like a reward like,"You beat this impossible level? Well then have a SomecallmeJohnny review."
Is it me or are Johnny's reviews getting shorter? His reviews used to be between 20-30 minutes and now there 10-15 minutes long
there was plot in the other reviews
sonicjms
This dude gets it.
SomecallmeJohnny After your break SPYRO THE DRAGON MARATHON:D You did Crash, why not our purple dragon?
Sonic games also manage to use up his time a lot more than other games.
Just look at the Sonic 06 review; multiply its length by 4 and you have the length of Clement's review. That's scarily close.
Personally, I don´t think length was that much of an issue. As long as these reviews are enjoyable, thought-provoking and gives me something to come back to them much later in the future, I´m good.
This has be a excellent Mario Marathon Johnny.Thank you for making this it was very entertaining. :)
0:33 RIP Pudge :(
"GO! GO! GET THAT STAR CAPTAIN TOAD!!!" ROTFL
2 players is ideal for this one IMO
I used to fuck with my friends when I played this by hitting the randomize characters button at the beginning of levels. It's even funnier if they're talking and not paying attention to the screen before it starts. Good times...
GO! GO! GET THAT GODDAMN STAR CAPTAIN TOAD!!
Classic SomecallmeJohnny vs. videos is the best.
Cool that YT recommended this review after the 2021 Switch port was announced.
I can't wait for the SGB LP of this game. Hopefully coming up...?
10:38 "You and me. And me and and you. So happy together..."
And you got your wish, super Mario odessy coming out next month
Excellent work on this marathon, Johnny. Some of your best reviews to date. :)
ALL of the yes. Multipayer is 95% funner (exept that camera. KILL WITH FIRE!) with others. Just expect to hate the camera.
So that's one for multi. Funny that the hair pulling and screaming makes the game have that much more charm, really gets everyone invested and brings out the worst in us which ends with us all having a good laugh at how silly we sound.
BacklogAddict I agree. But if you ARE going for multiplayer: 3 or 4. 2 is where you want to KIIIILLLLL the other ;)
I mean you gotta divide the anger, direct it all at one person and there isn't laughter and errors to drown out the actual legitimate insults. ...it also helps distract from any issues like that camera we're talking about, instead blame that dickhead who wanted to climb the mountain before everyone else!
BacklogAddict true. that is true for all "party games" speaking of, have you heard of the game fortune street? fuse monopoly, the stock market and mario party boards all in 1!
Great Job Johnny! 2 years later and this video is superbly made and hilarious!

DAMN IT JOHN! I JUST GOT THE MAIN THEME OUT OF MY HEAD!
I agree. 3D World is a solid game on the Wii U & it definitely made up for all the flaws that 3D Land had.
Jack Jedlicka. Yeah, basically. They had a fantastic concept, but did nearly nothing with it.
*****. True. 3D Land is not a bad game, but I was horribly disappointed by it. Maybe I'll play it again, just with a different mindset.
Also, Mega Man is a series I adore, despite the formula being the same. How hypocritical. :P
LOL at the end, "My pelvis doesn't go that way!". Love ya Johnny Boy!
ooooh! Johnny! I just realized you should do a month of PAC-MAN, doing a review on the Pac-Man console games! (no not like namco arcade collectionsI meant stuff like Pac-Man Worlds 1, 2, 3 and I supposed the ghostly adventures, but that's open to opinion) and hell any other pac-man games I might not have seen or heard of that you might possess
just saying, you've done mario twice, took care of mega man, did plenty of sonic
I think since nintendo has brought us Pac-Man in smash bros, I think its only fitting that we give the yellow wedge of cheese some praise for his games!
just an idea you should consider and by all means I'm not forcing it, just hoping you consider
Thank you, Johnny. I just got a Wii U and was deciding which games I could get. You made this look pretty fun. This is going on my list. I do miss playing Mario games.
Also, lawl at the end.
