Baby Base 13 : Hot Rocket problems and Creating Space : Oxygen not included

  • Next up on Midi base time to try out our hydrogen rocket to bring back some more research. Of course we need to build in a steam turbine to delete the heat of the launch otherwise we will end up cooking our base. The oil refinery is removed as it's no longer necessary. We also get to compress our magma tank freeing up more space for more base. Their are a few minor side projects like some semi permanent thimble reed tiles and getting rid of oxylite production.
    All in all this is going disturbingly well, next up I think we will be doing a sour gas boiler.

    Easy power solution. Every few hundred cycles, just send one rocket to an oily asteroid to bring back methane. That will tie you over for a long time.

    The area you just opened up at the bottom of the base should be repurposed into steam power. Rocket Silo is life. Stop purifying the water with sieves let the rocket boil it off to make more power. You can get your dirt that way killing 3 birds with 1 stone.

    You might be able to save some space by combining the steam turbines for the liquid oxygen and hydrogen and the rocket silo by just connecting the steam chamber to the rocket silo with metal tiles. If you have thermium/niobium, the aquatuner won't ever overheat, and you save a bunch of space as well. Add in a few automated airlocks, and you also prevent heat being wasted.

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That is a risk. The most heat will be around take take off and landing, which happens to be around the same time as fuelling. So you end up in a situation where you are trying to produce LOX and LHO while also having a ton of heat being dumped into the silo. I figured it would be safer to have a dedicated turbine.
      Though I might be being a bit over catious.

    Move the lava out of the way, and put 3-4 Steam Turbines that suck *HEAT* out of the silo (but not directly connected to the steam - connecting to the steam will waste heat). You can use a lot of that heat between launches to almost entirely power your base.

    • @andreaszetterstrom7418
      @andreaszetterstrom7418 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only had enough heat from the silo to power one turbine, and only if the rocket constantly goes to the closest planet. Anything further and the silo gets too cold. A single rocket simply doesn't generate that much heat.

    As the naphtha guy, I approve of this @0:54 :)
    BTW, I suggest you double the naphta lock to avoid heat leaking. Naphtha is a decent insulator, anything else (like petroleum) would leak MUCH more, but when the temp delta is so big (several hundreds degrees) it isn't about TC much. I'm sure you know how to do it but for people who don't know what I mean:
    imgur.com/a/olzYcPJ
    of course if thermal insulation is the goal, tiles should be insulated ones.

    I found it helpful on this LOx/LH2 layout to pre-cool the hydrogen by running it through a radiant gas pipe inside the diamond tile on the oxygen side. This also helped regulate the chill coming from the single aquatuner coolant line. All told though this build did work okay but it took like 40 cycles to build up enough LH2 to get to the tear. Also, there wasn't enough room in the LOx space to store enough of it to get out there, so I had space for a nearby tank which could be alleviated if you were to make the LOx space wider by 1 tile.

  • @ironman-nk4ts
    @ironman-nk4ts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you have enough space to make a set of three doors in front of your liquid lock to space. You can make a system that opens the middle door while the two beside it are closed so that it is a vacuum. This will reduce the movement of heat into your base. A disadvantage of this is that it will take some time to move from one end of the set of doors to the other

  • @thesentientneuron6550

    You could have moved the steam turbine for the rocket silo, one to the left and one to the top. this way you only have 1 isolated tile next to it, but you have 2 tiles at the bottom for steam to come in.

      Sadly the turbine needs to have two tile wide wall between it and the silo, because of a bug with with dust comets. When dust comets smack into a one-tile wide vertical wall, it spawns regolith on the other side.

    The dupe has an 10% chance to succesfully mine it, everytime it starts the job if the super productive overjoy is active.

    could put a steam turbine at the bottom of the silo in that newly opened area, maybe two of them with an aquatuner at the opposite end from the rocket to cool the turbines. A layer of super coolant on the floor from the rocket to the aquatuner to help with temp transfer while also letting you drain the turbines back into the aquatuner chamber below. Steam would still need to be pumped into the chamber from the top of the silo but it is an idea.

    It's possible to just put a couple layers of airflow/mesh tiles above it and just leave the doors open. Requires some manual mining, but w/e it's quick.
    Also, you could possibly open the second boiler room (the one with the aquatuner) to the rocket silo for double chill.

    I don't know how big your small sour gas boiler will be, but you yould stick in another steam turbine in the bottom right of your silo to provide more power that's fastly available and cool the silo down faster, or maybe build a proper airlock for your silo there so you don't need to cool it down as fast and thus use it as a kind of more steady power supply while slowly draining the heat out of it....

    So honestly base conservation is really lookin like the priority with the little bit of magma you have left, it’s honestly about time you rip out your core structures where the central cooling is and combine it with the last little bit of magma generation you have, I’d honestly try and find a way to combine it to the rocket silo so you have another way of siphoning hear out, using a thermal aquatuner in the rocket silo to help cool your base might be a bit difficult to get the heat to dissapate properly so I’m not quite to sure how to approach it, is steam considered heavier or lighter then CO2 in ONI, it might be important for placement of steam turbines because the CO2 might end of clogging your steam turbines if it doesn’t have a way out

      The oil well can spit out 3.33 KG/s of crude oil.
      If I just refine the Crude normally it would only bring in about 1.65 KW before expenses.
      A petroleum boiler would pull in about 3.3 KW of power before expenses, it also it would be pretty big.
      A 1kg/s sour gas boiler would pull in about 5.9 KW of power before expenses and limiting it to 1kg/s means it can be compacted a lot, it should be about the same size as the liquid O2 and H2 device.

    Francis, why don't you build a steam engine airlock like you did in the rocket chimney? That would eat more steam and provide power to the base. That is basically what you have but... well... mini.
