Man you guys have no idea how informative this is. Summarises it, shows it in action, then breaks it down to understand it better. Amazing. More of this please.
I had the exact same thoughts! Tried these out today at our gym against a taller guy who was more lean and then a bit shorter tank guy. I myself am short too (168cm/72kg atm) and had GREAT success. The keypoints these guys showed were the gamechanger that turned this from a ”good lesson” to a ”great lesson”. Magnifique!
I love how Travis has moved forward so much from his judo roots and expanded his grappling to bjj & wrestling. I’m on the same journey but of course at a much lower level.
Cool vids man I always see you at judo tournaments that’s always cool to see. Some suggestions for the channel maybe 2 no gi and 2 gi vids per month since you said you were looking at 1 video per week keep it balanced. Keep up the good content!
I was a bouncer for a long time in the early 90s before BJJ was a thing. I so wish we had BJJ back then because even though I was 5'11' and 90kg there was so many guys at 6"3' to 6"6' and 10 to 30 kg heavier that having the better body mechanics would have helped so much. #Respect
Upload?!?!?! YES!!! Thanks sooo much!!!! I’ve been doing bjj for a year and started judo a few weeks ago because I saw Travis Stevens on youtube and it looked soooo awesome!
Travis Stevens I enjoy the judo/wrestling side of it all so takedowns and throws are one of the big things I like watching of yours. Also, if you ever have a seminar in Texas I’ll definitely go to that! Only seminar I can think of I wouldn’t mind paying to attend!
I’d love to see a video on really basic grip fighting. Like what the best place for me to position my hands and best place for me to keep my opponents hands. How do I strip grips most efficiently. We don’t learn any of this in my bjj class. Hopes this helps you come up with a new video idea and thanks in advance 😊
I love that topic. It might be hard to get basic thought but we can work on it. Frosty is a Judo white belt still so I'll act like I'm teaching him. Will try to get a video out in a few weeks for you!
wow that's interesting, i was mostly focusing on teaching my two year old the conversion from side control to omoplata but you know, to each his own (haha :))
In my opinion this guide was EXCELLENT! Tried these out today at our gym against a taller guy who was more lean and then a bit shorter tank guy. I myself am short too (168cm/72kg atm) and had GREAT success. The keypoints Travis showed here were THE gamechanger that turned this from a ”good lesson” to a ”great lesson”. Magnifique!
I like these ideas. I really have no idea how to wrestle or grapple or throw or anything. I specialize in weaponry and disarms and joint locks. All the joint locks I use are used standing or crouching and are illegal in grappling competitions as they are small joint manipulations and also standing is illegal I believe.
@@TravisStevensgrappling Make a Wrestling documentary! When you study Chinese martial arts you often hear of Mongolian Wrestling. They say Mongolians love to wrestle. Are you a Greco/Roman Wrestler?
@@1sunstyle His career and Olympic medal is in Judo. I believe that's all he did before branching into BJJ. I guess he's been doing some wrestling lately as well, but his base is Judo. A damned good judoka I might add.
I dunno .. I been watching a lot of UFC lately and I can conclude, eye pokes and groin strikes dominate. Look what biting did fer Tyson. hehe Just having fun Thanks gents for the insightful breakdowns.
In Judo we call your second takedown a Kouchi Gari but I really like the way you do it by bringing the backstep in to it. I'm going to try that. THanks for posting this video.
Im curious why they tape their fingers randomly? Some people tape certain ones and other people tape others, is that a JJ thing for better grip technique. If so would that work in Judo? My daughter is training and I wondered if that may help her technique, and of course is legal in Judo. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated 👍
All good until your opponent has a short sleeve rash guard and shorts on and they are sweating. I find the wrist and ankle are tough to hold on to for the drag.
@@TravisStevensgrappling I currently have a yellow belt in judo, my goal is to become very proficient in self defense grappling and takedowns for mma - would transitioning to wrestling from judo be better?
Nobody who knows how to fight wil be with his palm on your head, until u get get that leg from nr 2 position you wil be hit 3 times in the face, or u get a knee in the stomach
This is all great if the opponent decides to stop being athletic and stays as light as possible on their feet. The reality of these moves is the often won't work the way you anticipate. They need to chain with other attacks because no one just "gets arm dragged" at least not in my area.
Thats why it's the three you need to know. As you improve the more you need to chain together. But still a simple arm drag can work against the best grapplers.
Travis Stevens I’ve pulled off the Kosoto Gake from the over/under and left-sided underhook (got it from the Steve Mocco instructional). Tani Otoshi I've tried with the Russian Tie (Georgi Ivanov) arm drag (Adam Wheeler), side bear hug (Yarden Gerbi), and Georgian Grip (Iliadis). I'm (very) late to the Judo game. So I improvise my entries with Greco pummeling and collar ties.
For beginners, they are a lot less risky as far as being in a bad position. They are also easier to learn. BJJ players move differently than just players so judo style takedowns can be harder.

my question is... why are we not learning from a gold medallist?
I love how Travis has moved forward so much from his judo roots and expanded his grappling to bjj & wrestling. I’m on the same journey but of course at a much lower level.
Travis has been grappling all of these (including wrestling) since he was like 5. He hasn't moved on from his roots, he's just retired.
New white belt here. During open role, I always feel more comfortable starting up, than in a seated position. This is a vid I needed. Thanks!
Thank you so much Travis! I´ve seen a bunch of Takedown videos. This is one of the best out there! Cheers!

the 1st 1 is from judo but modified, I suggest doing wrestling if u want to be good at takedowns
Can you submit with straight ankle from standing?
Hey Travis, overall what techniques are best for nogi takedowns - wrestling techniques or judo techniques?
It depends on your background but for beginners I would always instruct wrestling.

There's no punching in grappling arts. You need more options than double / single when you take striking setups out of the equation.
Are these legal in judo competition?

Wow you actually uploaded, awesome! Btw why are you doing wrestling takedowns and not judo takedown?
For beginners, they are a lot less risky as far as being in a bad position. They are also easier to learn. BJJ players move differently than just players so judo style takedowns can be harder.
They are easier for people to learn and apply to BJJ. Judo can be a challenge for a lot of people without experience in traditional judo.
Are you an Olympic silver medalist in wrestling or judo? Or did they introduced jiujitsu to Olympics while I was asleep? I'm confused.
