    Your voice is so clear and calm, I thought, "He must be Canadian" 🙂You concisely provided all the info I needed to fix the problem on my 10 year old Harmon Kardon AVR-156. The volume would jump from soft to blow-the-doors-off and back with just a small turn of the knob. I was worried it would be an expensive repair or a new amplifier, but your description of the problem fit and I gave it a try. The rotary encoder looked identical to the one in the video. Didn't look particularly dirty, but it obviously was. Paid particular attention to cleaning the contact points on the delicate copper arms. Works like new now! Thanks!

    Thank you! I never thought I'd be able to fix anything like this, but with your instructions I've done it and it now works perfectly. Saves me buying a new one.

    This video applied to my metronome as well! The wheel to change tempo had identical symptoms and the repair shown worked. It was more challenging bc it's smaller, but the information was 100% effective. If you have this problem with a Tama Rhythm Watch or maybe a Boss Dr. Beat, try this!

    Hey! THANK YOU ! I just took apart my beloved 20 year old Pioneer Elite receiver to try your fix and my volume pot looked almost exactly like yours and the cleaning and mild lube fixed my problem too. 😁😁😁👍🏻 Thank you again for your efforts and making this video.

    Amazingly fantastic video! Brought an Arcam A38 Amp on the ultra-cheap where the volume control did not work when turned quickly, followed your guide and it's now working perfectly! The amount of green crap that came out from the mechanism was scary!
    Like some of the others mentioned, the delicate parts are on the PCB, need to be VERY careful cleaning them.
    Thanks a bunch for posting! 😊

    Very thorough. I feel confident in fixing my late brothers receiver now. Now if i could figure out why the subwoofer wont stay on when i push in the button. Wont turn on via remote or any buttons on the receiver. Its just ghe front of the woofer. If i hold it in, it stays...lol...cant jam out very well that way though.

  • @grayhalf1854

    This is similar to the problem with my TEAC amp but mine happens more when I use the remote, weirdly enough. For example the volume is on minimum, I tap the 'volume up' button on the remote and it keeps on going up until I tap the 'volume down' button, at which point it might stop, or just send the volume back to 0 again. Any ideas what the problem could be? Typically it's just out of warranty ☹️

    • @SamCampbell
      @SamCampbell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My initial guess would be that the button on the remote is some how getting stuck. It could also very well be a firmware issue so this simple solution may be irrelevant. If you cover the front of the remote right after pressing it, does the volume stop changing?
      If it does stop, the contacts on the remote might need to be cleaned. If you take the remote apart you can clean the contacts for the buttons on PCB using a Q-Tip and some alcohol. To clean the rubber membrane portion of the remote simply push down on one of the areas on the button and gently drag the now exposed black carbon contact across a white sheet of paper.

    • @grayhalf1854
      @grayhalf1854 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamCampbell Hi Sam, thanks for your swift response. I don't think that the problem is with the remote... I'm sure I've replicated it with the volume knob on the amp too (although it seems less prone to the problem). I covered the IR transmitter on the remote after tapping the 'volume up' key and the volume kept on increasing on the amp. I might speak to Richer Sounds tomorrow. Maybe it's to do with the hot weather??!?

    • @andrewsawesome
      @andrewsawesome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend 70 percent Isopropyl alcohol (aka Rubbing Alcohol). Vinegar probably won't help. You can buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol and use a paper towel or buy alcohol pads.
      The part is called a rotary encoder

    I've owned amps and receivers, (with analog/mechanical Volume knobs), going back to a tube Bogen, and I have NEVER had any problems with the volume knobs.
    But every single newer Receiver that I've owned with these digital/encoder chipped volume knobs had all stuttered within 2 years of use.
    For gawd sakes can't any of these audio receiver maufacturers today not FIX this yet. ?!
    Let's face it, these digital/encoder volume knobs are all badly-designed crap, and manufacturers know it, they just want you to go out and buy a new receiver.
