It's about time I make a sophomore year survival guide, don't you think? 10th graders need some TLC sometimes, too.
Everything is covered, from class selection to friendships to romances to even partying. These are the most legit tips on the internet, yo.
This is part 1 of a 3 part series to cover every year of high school. By the end, this will probably be over an hour of content yikes. Thanks again to the Ridge for helping make this possible. The lord knows I'd never be able to do this solo.
Also, shout out to the folks watching this who AREN'T in high school anymore. You guys are weirdos. I mean, I kinda still watch high school survival guides since it's a fun time to remind myself of all the shenanigans I would get into with my friends but... It's kinda sad, ya know? To take time and reminisce about something you'll never experience again?
To be fair though, most of this advice is applicable to pretty much everyone. Kinda common sense, you know? Or at least it should be.
Also, hello scared teenagers who are entering sophomore year of high school! How are you? I dunno, I got a lot of requests from folks asking me to make this video but??? You're a sophomore. You already know the drill. You've been in school long enough.
It'd be such a waste of my time to walk sophomores through the ins and outs of being in school. You kids should be pros already. Instead, I think it's more useful (and fun to watch) to focus on the soft skills like cheating on homework and whatnot.
That's kinda what the rest of this series will be: Lots of soft skills for kids.
By the way, a fun fact about TH-cam: They use the descriptions of videos to optimize them for searches. Basically, if I fill this description up with buzzwords and stuff, it'll do better on the analytics. Pretty handy dandy if you ask me. That's entirely why I'm rambling like a buffoon here.
Also, did I mention you should check out Ridge Wallet?

I did my sophomore year twice so I feel like an expert lol. This is my advice:
~get your driver’s license as soon as possible. You’ll be able to do the stereotypical high school stuff so much easier, go anywhere anytime you want, and you’ll also be that cool kid that can drive.
~I know this one sounds cliche but talk to everyone you can and be nice to them. You’re at that age where you can befriend everyone from sophomores to occasionally seniors so take advantage of it. Also you won’t be stuck in that terrible “I have no friends in this class my life is over” spot again because most of the time you’ll have some sort of acquaintance anywhere.
~start to distance yourself from your parents and do stuff on your own, the earlier you can get them off your back the better your later high school years will be, plus you’re preparing for the future.
~this year is a sort of middle ground between the super important junior and senior years and the newbie freshman years. Use that as both an excuse to have fun and an excuse to get your issues figured out. You don’t want to be dealing with a crisis while you’re also trying to prepare for college.
~try and figure out what you want to do with your life. If you already have an idea of what you want out of being alive then when they start talking about it junior and senior year it’s easier.
~seriously don’t do drugs, just wait until you’re in college it’s not fun or fresh and it actually does bad stuff to your head. If you want a good coping mechanism try immersing yourself in some tv show that’s what I did in tenth grade and it worked out great and led to me realizing what I wanted to do with my life so yeah.
~if you don’t trust your parents to help you deal with your issues find some adult at your school you can trust. If your guidance counselor sucks befriend your favorite teacher or coach or someone else. No matter how mature you think you are you should have someone to lean on if you need it.
~don’t be a dick. It doesn’t make you cool or edgy it just makes you an annoying prick who no one wants to talk to. Don’t think you’re better than everyone because trust me you’re not.
I wish you could save comments 😭😭😭
Screenshots!
Wow these are actually STELLAR TIPS
I’m a college sophomore and most of these are good. I would add don’t do drugs ever. Believe it or not life gets way more stressful once your out of high school and staying sober minded will only work to your advantage. Also parents, while at times annoying most of them time mean well. They are having to accept that you are growing up which is harder then we may think. It is best to try to have reasonable conversation with them about boundaries rather then just out right trying to get them off your back. Besides that I would have to say these are some great tips.
The 4th one 😭 Here in France 10th grade is the 1st year of high school, so we're both totally new and it's our only year before "Première" and "Terminale" ( Junior and Senior years ). It really sucks !

Thats okay I have tips for junior year. I am becoming a senior in September and since there isnt a video, I will give you some MAJOR tips.
Junior year is definitely the scariest year, with all the teachers and counselors poking you every day to make sure you're doing good and make sure you are prepared for the SAT and finding colleges, along with possibly making you write essays towards the end of the year for your college application.
It can be very overwhelming, but you are not alone. Many kids this year, as seen in the chart given to you by this video, says juniors are the depressed kids. That is actually kind of true because there is SO much to worry about this year. But it's okay. COMMUNICATION is your best friend during Junior year and making sure you are in a good place and organizing yourself to your best ability is key.
Talk to people. Hang out with friends. Get those pesky community service hours out of the way. Have fun.
Whenever you feel overwhelmed, take a step back and make sure to relax and do something fun, like hanging out with friends. That will allow you to take on your responsibilities with fresh eyes and get it out of the way.
Think of it like this: the more you accomplish in your junior year, the less you'll have to worry about when you become a senior, or even when you go to college and get a job.
Make sure you study or at least take practice tests for the SAT. It might seem scary but taking practice tests on SAT apps really help. If you think the SAT is really scary, it honestly really isn't that bad. The literature portion has texts you read and multiple choice questions about those texts, and also has a second part where you fix the punctuation through multiple choice. The math is just algebra you learned in middle school. Honestly what you've been learning in math these past two years is harder than the math questions on the SAT. You'll be fine. If you get a low score, you will have a chance to retake it. I wasn't entirley satisfied with my score this year, so I'm taking it again in October.
If you're unsure of what college you're going to or what you want to do, that's okay. Just ask questions with your teachers or counselors to make sure you at least know how to get into college. That is, if you even want to go to college. There are so many options which are also overwhelming at times, but think about the things you enjoy doing most, like your hobbies or your favorite classes. If you're unsure of that, at least think of the classes you hate so you knock out the career paths you definitely don't want to go for.
Apart from all that, have fun!! Go out with friends, if you have a gf or bf make sure to do stupid stuff outside of school. Go to parties, but watch out for them like how this video explains.
And that's basically the most important points to cover.
Trust me, be yourself and take a chill pill (not drugs obviously don't do that to yourself... Like relax lol). You'll do amazing. I believe in you :)
Quick tip: if you have the option to work at a movie theater, do it. The work isnt that bad, you're not going to deal with many bad customers, and sometimes you'll just straight up get downtime to do whatever on your phone/homework. You also get large discounts on all the concessions, and you will often get to take home entire bags of leftover popcorn.
As a senior this year, I'm wishing the class of 2026 good luck this year 👏👏👏
thanks man

My best advice is don’t be cringe, learned from experience
Just over a month into my sophomore year and I suddenly feel the shift. When I was a freshman, people a grade above me told me how they wished they could be freshman again. I did not believe them until now. I have the PSAT tomorrow and two projects due this Friday (10/11/2023).
Popularity is only really a thing in elementary school and middle school but in high school everyone is just too dead inside to give a shit about things unless it fills the void
At that point “popularity” is just the largest bubble. They’re the ones that think they’re popular because there are a lot of them and are often the ones that think they’re part of the stereotypically popular crowd
nah there are still people that think they are popular, but no one gives a shit about them
popularity in my school is whose the most obnoxious in my class
All that popularity bs will be nothing after high school
most of elementary school it still didn't matter it only mattered from 3rd to 5th grade
The youtube algorithm is INCREDIBLE. I get this recommended the HOUR after I walk out of my last day of sophomore year. Legitimately as soon as it is no longer useful.

I’m in sophomore right now. But to those just now going into freshman year, please hear me out. I get that you used to be in middle school and your probably still worrying about stuff like popularity and relationships. But let me tell you now that NONE OF THAT MATTERS!!! Like in high school is where people don’t even care for that stuff and they just want to graduate, that’s literally there main priority. Just do your homework and at least try to study and you’ll be fine :)
thanks :) but i’m literally not going back to school until the upcoming school year in fall (august) so i’ll technically be a sophomore but i’ll feel like a freshman🥲
@Octo Bunnzie ofc you should make friends but don’t aim for a million, just a few you really enjoy and who are good people. Remember, Quality over quantity
In a few weeks I’m going to tour my high school for next year, which is good for multiple reasons. I’ve only been there once just before lockdown to sing in the auditorium which was right next to an entrance so all I got to see was said auditorium and a bit of a hall way. Also, it means that we will at least have an in person option, because they wouldn’t do it if we stayed virtual.
Fr doesn’t feel like freshman year happened since it was canceled like halfway through the year
Leave it to TH-cam to recommend this to me the last week as a sophomore

As someone who is finishing Sophomore year in less then 3 weeks.... I’d call this pretty accurate. Also- please please PLEASE take and try AP classes. Stay in honors if that’s not an option. AP classes are your friend for getting into college, but your greatest enemy in high school. But they can be worth it in the long run.
Are you sure? I’m currently a freshmen faced with the opportunity to take honors world history II I’m debating whether I wanna take it or not. What do you recommend (I’m also balancing this with AP chem and Honors pre-calc)
@@philipnedeltchev8679 I am not the best qualified but I’ll do my best to answer.
But first I want to congratulate you on the classes you’re taking. That’s incredible that you’re doing those classes. Keep up the good work!
AP classes are challenging (obviously). And AP World History is extremely content based class. You write essays, have to keep track of notes, and read a lot. It’s a long year with a lot of material. But if you take the AP test (which you technically don’t have to take an AP class for exactly, depending on your school), getting an average or above average score on the AP exam does give you college credits. Taking the class gets you college credits. It’s an incredible if expensive opportunity.
I don’t know your situation fully. And I apologize if my words don’t mean much. But I don’t know. Maybe I gave you a perspective? There are a bunch of videos on TH-cam that also can help explain what a class like that is like if you ever need.
I hope this was at least a little helpful
@@queer.axolotl thanks! I appreciate it, it’s rare to find someone genuinely interested in someone else’s best interest online, youtube especially. Thanks for the advice once again!

He said how freshman year is the "tutorial" while the rest of high school (sophomore, junior, and senior) year are on difficult mode. Later, college will be real life. After that, you are completely on your own.
*Teenagers have it nice*
They say this when what classes you take and the pressure of growing up determines on what job you'll get.
Once you turn 16 people are already asking you what your goals in life are like their expecting you to spit out an entire monologue about how you want to be a lawyer yet your clueless of how many years it actually takes to be one. Some people don't know who they want to be until their senior years.
Others already have their life set by 10th grade. (Dunno how that's possible.)
I was in a class where they made every student complete something called “Sophomore NEXT Guide”. In short, it asked you questions on your future, what you want your career to be, what college you’d like to go to. Taxes, etc etc.
I didn’t complete it.
I'm 16 and I really know what I wanna be (i'm starting 10th grade in September) so it's really possible to know what you want to be(in the future) while you're 15/16/17 and in the 10th grade..
Thanks! This will really help for my last 6 days as a sophomore!
I’m becoming one next year wish me luck
I am now in the same boat, watching this 2 weeks before my sophomore year is done lmao
Shrek goes to school?
about the bon fires... i had this friend who’s cousin got drunk at a party stripped down and accidentally fell into a bon fire and died butt naked, he was found face down in the ashes the next morning cause everyone was high or drunk and didn’t realize he was dead in the fire, it’s not a joke and should be taken seriously
how do I respond to this
I never knew how much of a deadly combination alcohol, teenagers, and fires can be.
Advice for the clubs thing; join a larger club if you want to make more friends. I recommend drama/theater club if you like productions, or marching band if you like performing and music, cause most of those kids are chill and nice.
If you like sports, pursue that sport. It will help you make friends and develop your hobbies
Me, a junior: About one year too late, man.

To whoever reading is this🌺: just know no matter how sad you may feel sadness is only part of the process and doesn’t last forever trust me. You are stronger than your fears and insecurities. Your amazing and intelligent. If you need to cry then cry. Find inner peace. Sometimes the best way to fix your own problems is by helping someone else. And If anyone hasn’t said this to you, I love you truly no matter if we know each other or not❤️
I saw your freshman video when I was a freshman. My face lit up when I saw this one. I am so glad to grow up with this. 🙈
Before watching “i would say that best way to survive is just be a chill person and don’t be rude study hard and just be your self and stay out of stupid crap

A senior will be 18 when you're 16 so if shit goes bad take them to court.
steven quan I’m 17 and I’m a senior I wormy be 18 until I’m finished with my senior year I was born during the summer of 2003, but yes most would be 18
When I'm in my senior year, I'll only be 17 since my birthday is during summer vacation.
we have a two year law in my state so they would be fine (NJ) :)
Can’t wait to run into my sophomore year head first after having my freshman year online
i feel so bad for you, freshman year was already hard enough *in person*
Same 😫
LMFAO IKR
To make it worse, I’m going to a new school for sophomore year-
Bruh I’m technically a sophomore now but I barely stepped foot in my hs because of corona. So like I’m still kinda a freshman😫
same, but I’m in the same school i was in middle school as I am now in high school
yep same
Same. It feels like I'm a freshman but with 10th grade classes instead of 9th grade classes.
Remember watching this video the summer before sophomore year, now I’m graduating, crazy how time flies
I watched this summer before freshman and now I'm a incoming junior,I'm not ready for the sact

when you miss your freshman year from a pandemic so you have to take both guides into account
Same
That’s me!
I always get these every year since middle school and it’s always specific to which year I’m going into
I've been online all of freshman year so I didn't have ANY interaction with anyone from my school and I basically just missed an entire year of the ever-so-fleeting high school experience. At least I'll kinda know what I' up against education-wise.
I remember watching the freshman survival guide a year ago…
ME TOO

I'm watching this at 3:06 am on a random summer night like i still have 54 days 20 hours 52 mins 21 seconds until school starts again and im scared to be a sophomore
god... you just described exactly what IM doing (almost to the day)
i have 3 weeks bro
47 days (:
😢😢😢
34 days (:
I’m going into my second year of high school in less then 2 weeks, part of me is excited because of the new opportunities and the other half is me being nervous because a couple good friends of mine in freshman year flaked out over something stupid.I can’t tell you how much this means to me,and I’m glad other viewers like me are wanting to improve. Also, this may be unimportant to some but I got my first job as a extended day worker for one of the elementary schools in our country. Who ever happened to stumbles on this comment,Your doing so well.and we’re proud of you.
P.S.make sure to open up your minds and circle to the strangers around you,if you make that right move. You’ll make some great connections and met some good people, screw the population score in high schools!JUST DO YOU !WOOHO!💜

sophomore year i didnt even read the book i had to write an essay on. instead i just watched summary videos for each chapter and got an A+ as well as that teacher using my essay as an example for next year’s class. if reading is hard for you good summary videos help a lot
I did freshman year entirely online I don't wanna go back since I'm afraid of socializing
Same
In 19 days as of writing this, I'll start my sophmore year. I'm low-key scared of going back to school, especially since my autism and severe social anxiety made very bad roadblocks for me all year. But this year, I want to join drama club as a costume maker/designer because I LOVE theatre, even if I'll not do it as an actual job. I'm praying it'll go well.
Don’t worry homie just focus on what matters and ignore the bs
Anyone else didn't get to experience their freshman year cause of covid and still have no idea what to do going into sophomore year 😭
Facts
Same like I don't know the layout of the school very well
Bruh yes I never even been inside my new high school so idk what I’m gonna do for sophomore year 😭
same, i’m moving to a new school and haven’t had any friends for the entirety of quarantine. i have no idea how to socialize 😭
i depended on so many people for the sake of my grades during freshman year and idk who to ask advice for fuxking sophomore year
about the dating middle schooler thing, I was at a friends house and we were playing smash and one guy said some insult or something to my friend and my friend said,” hold up, ain’t you dating an 8th grader” and we just stared at him and said what. it was funny
There are a lot of kids who go to school eight hours a day, work several hours a week, have five hours of homework a week, and do extracurriculars. I don't understand why people think they have more free time than an adult because they are actually working for like 10 hours a day or more.
To be honest, even though I know overworking yourself like that isn't healthy, it's what I'm aiming for since I've been procrastinating for the longest time.
@@overmorrow3907 Same. I find that it helps to schedule events that you cannot miss. Like if I have sports practices I'll be getting the proper amount of exercise but if I try to get exercise by my own initiative I usually fall short. Also, sometimes it helps to do homework in a library or somewhere where you can't switch to watching tv and relaxing. Sometimes I just have to tell myself "Oh, all this time spent watching tv is wasted. Just do the work."
Ofcourse there is differenses with different countries (even if he means USA what you are propably talking about too.) In finland, its pretty unusual that under 18 year old kid works in the same week that he/she has school. So atleast we do have enough time to learn new skills etc.
@@Aito_porojääkäri In the US, especially among low income kids, it is not uncommon to work while in school. I saw a statistic that something like 20-30% of high school kids (14-18) are employed at some point in the year.
I got to school for 7 hours a day, have about 3-5 hours of homework a night, and I work 15-18 hours every weekend. I barely get 8 hours of sleep. I don't have a lot of free time

I remember being excited to go to high school and watching your Freshman Year Survival Guide on the bus as an 8th Grader. Welp--- I made it through Freshman year and I'm about to start my Sophomore year in a week, so I figured I'd come back! Thanks NateIsLame, I will return next year to watch the Junior Year Survival Guide! (and i'll for sure come back for Senior Year Survival Guide too when the time eventually comes).
Oh my god, I did the same thing! I watched the Freshman video like three times, just anxious over the change from 8th to 9th. Whelp, I got through! Watching this one now, almost as anxious as I was before 😂
Y'all be fine, I'm starting my senior year
Freshmen year is ending pretty soon for me and I survived thanks to your Freshmen video. I'm taking notes here, thanks for these videos man 😂
Just a little piece of advice from me to you: A lot of you will likely be learning how to drive or be getting your drivers license around this time. DONT. BE. AN. IDIOT. IN. CARS. You can’t screw around when it comes to driving. I was in an accident during sophomore year. They can change your life forever. I know because you are young you think you are immortal and it won’t happen to you, but that’s what I once thought too. Don’t ruin your future by being an idiot while driving.
thanks for da advice man
Thanks this is very good advice
And this is why I am waiting until 18
I never got why we let 16 & 17 year olds drive

Sameeee 💀
Hey future Juniors!
