When I was 16 my crush invited me to go on a hike with her and 2 of her female friends, we only had 2 small hiking tents so the two of us shared a tent. It started off great but I think my dodgy cooking on a trangia gave me food poisoning that night and I stunk the tent out badly. I woke up at like 2am and notice she had left the tent. Never spoke a word about it again and kinda drifted apart in years to come.

Best advice for people currently in high school from someone who was formally in high school: Make like 1 or 2 really good friends that like you for you (not popularity or pity or homework help), and focus on finding a passion which you can pursue in the future. Once you find it, do as much as you can towards it, so colleges/employers know you're committed. The random "cool kids" in hs won't matter, but your career will. If you're seen as the class nerd, good for you. If you're seen as an awkward kid no one wants to be around, don't hold that against yourself. Just don't be mean and find what you love, and you'll get through it.
I wish I was able to tell myself that in freshman year of hs, so maybe i'll be able to reach at least one person through this comment.

So I did do everything right! Good to know. I was antisocial in middle school because I was still adjusting to greater academic responsibilities, while everyone somehow already knew each other. When I finally did put myself out there, I felt unnoticed. I had to start every interaction, never the other way around. Then the pandemic came, and I noticed that I didn’t need my classmates to feel validated; just my real friends. The ones that actually listened and cared. Now that I’m in a great college, I don’t regret dedicating myself to academics. I now realize that my classmates were always cliquish, so I bet this would have happened anyway. Glad I don’t have to deal with those fair-weather “friends” ever again.

When I was in my late teens I thought this sort of close judgemental approach by my peers would go on for life so you have to compete and be cool as possible , but the thruth is when you've grown up you're surronded by people who has their own issues and nobody cares much what's you've been doing and how well you're getting on with society.

From my experience, no one actually cares if you're "yourself" or not or how you act about specific things, really. If you have good mental health, everything else falls into place. Confidence, happiness, and kindness are the three basic ingredients of a great experience and a well-liked kind of attitude. I know that sounds cheesy but I swear it's absolutely true.
Another thing I was happy to learn is that you don't have to care so much about whether your words sound cheesy or whether something makes you seem weird/nerdy/etc. What makes something "cool" or "weird" almost always depends on how confident you sound or look when you say it or do it. Confidence can be learned and developed and it goes a long way. This is coming from someone who used to be "the quiet kid" and had the mental health of a dumpster fire.
Take care of yourself, seriously, mentally and physically; it'll improve just about every aspect of your life.

That last bit of advice with the student debt was straight up facts. You can even go bankrupt and not have your student loans forgiven! From bitter personal experience, just don't go into anything until you question yourself down to your core that that's exactly what you want to do, cause your loans will influence/chain you for down the rest of your life if you're getting education in the US

😂 I actually looked up how to order at subway when I was in high school. This happened because one day I somehow got invited by a small group to a subway after school. I was so nervous I couldn’t figure out how it worked and was to afraid to ask for help. I only managed to order a meatball sub on white bread not toasted. At the table they all ate “fancy adult subs” while I did my best to not spill my meatball sub all over myself…then I never talked to them again. 😂 god I hated high school. Happy ending though, years later I meet some of them, they were fat and peaked at 20 while I had gotten in shape and was doing doing pretty well, and I even learned how to order at subway (also the bread is made of yoga mats).
Usually the cool kids peak before they even become adults. I have no idea why to me it seemed like being socially successful in high school was so imperative, it really wasn’t.
1:23 my friend actually did this in bio class a few weeks ago. He has a bit of dyslexia, so he misread a study guide question “what are orgasms,” and since the class was all being rowdy and talkative, he half-shouted it out and got the attention of the entire class. It was the best

I just graduated high school a few days ago and can definitely relate. Except the whole “friends” thing, I made literally 2 of them and the rest of the class seemingly hated me and I hated them, so after 7 years of barely tolerating them I parted with them with one too many cocktails at the prom and a rather provocative message in the group chat afterwards XD
