I think there is two kinds of popular kids at high school: the one’s that say they are popular, but nobody actually likes because they’re conceited, judgemental and elitist. They are only friends with the other popular kids. Then there are the actually popular kids who are generally well-liked, have friends outside of the popular clique in several different cliques. After high school if people outside of the popular kids group bump into the former in public they avoid eyecontact and act like they don’t recognise them. To the latter they actually say hi to and might even strike up a conversation. To sump up, first one’s are recalled with contempt by the rest of the student body and second one’s are recalled with fondness and admiration.

I think this must be why there aren't cliques in UK schools (since we wear uniforms and aren't allowed to show our personality through fashion). If you are smart and confident, you automatically win popular points here, but popular kids don't all hangout together. Friend groups have a good mix of personalities, so it's interesting to see what it's like in another country.

'Popular Kids' is a construct mostly created by kids of White people in developed countries (and which caught on to other groups in these countries) .. Kids in schools in developing countries are just excited to go to school and be with their friends (there will be different friends groups in a class). No 'popularity' or 'out of your league' BS.. It is also to be noted that one of the root cause of bullying is also primarily letting the kids dividing themselves into popular and unpopular groups (such as 'nerds'.. its unfathomable how these countries that consider themselves to have great education systems let kids create derogatory terms for smart kids rather than encouraging them).. The adults in these countries have also failed these kids by not doing enough to instill a sense of unity among kids in these places leading to Teenage depression issues. In addition to no bullying awareness campaigns there should be work shops that teach kids 'All kids are popular' and 'All kids are cool'. But hey even the adults are traumatized by the effects of bullying from their childhoods and doesnt seem to know better.... and the cycle continues..

I’m part of the “no friends” group because I was shy and no one really gave me a chance. Even now, I feel like if someone wanted to be my friend it would be out of pity. I overheard a girls convo one time about another girl in my grade and she was like “everybody hangs out with her because she has no friends” and here I was with no friends myself. So now with that thought in my mind I find it hard to accept if someone truly wants to be my friend or feels sorry for me.

You will for sure find your people in college! My overall experience is that most people in college are way cooler and way less judgemental than high schoolers. Popularity isn't even really a thing in college because nobody really cares anymore. Plus, everybody goes into college without knowing anyone or having any friends, so people are much more open to meeting new people and making new friends!

I had the same problem when I was entering high school. I was a shy and timid kid all throughout elementary and some parts of middle school, I had little to no friends until I decided to turn my life around. As a rising junior in college, in retrospect, I believe the biggest contributor to my success in climbing the social hierarchy of high school was the perspective shift from trying to be an "approachable/people pleaser" to not really caring about anyone's opinion. If you think about it, the chances of ever seeing anyone you went to high school with are pretty damn low, so use this opportunity to experiment with your communication styles.
My best advice would be to go up to people you don't know, with a big smile on your face, and simply say "Hey what's up?" then try to bond with them over whatever topic is at hand (i.e., school orientation, lunchtime, class time, etc..). The key point to having an introductory conversation is to keep your responses simple and straightforward, in other words, relax. Don't try to convolute your answers, if you need time to collect your thoughts to formulate the most comprehensive and to-the-point response, do so. Afterward, if you have the chance, ask them what they're doing after school or who they sit with during lunch. With this, you should have a good foundation to create a friendship. At the end of the day, just remember that confidence is just a reflection of being passionate about yourself and whatever you're talking about. I hope these tips help you to make more friends. Good luck buddy!

Throughout my schooling years, but particularly High School; there were no cliché cliques as you might see in the movies. People were just people, with close friend groups, yes, but that didn’t mean they excluded people entirely. If I knew a person from a group of friends that didn’t necessarily fit a stereotype, they’d be cool with me. I had so many groups in high-school that I hung out with (not that I was popular or well-known) it was more of, I knew people, thus leading to me getting closer to people I didn’t know before.
Everyone was just so diverse and so different, that you’d find even a skinny white kid that took ROTC seriously with a bunch of the rag-tag ghetto kids in the front of the school with the security guards lmao
For me though, I met people, brought them together and played UNO, watched movies at the cinema, etc. Of course I didn’t know everyone, like the kids that knew the staff better and later became the alumni valedictorian, but I occasionally saw them.
In short, life isn’t a movie. Every school in the entire world is different. Maybe people do have cliché schools somewhere but I highly doubt it’s was normal.

It shocks me in this comment section and in general, people see movie stereotypes; popular jocks, nerds, queen bee etc.
The experience isn’t really like that. People might’ve done more for the school, or joined sports teams, or fundraisers that got them more attention, but just because you weren’t in the spotlight, and didn’t focus on partying didn’t make you a “nerd” or an “outcast” I preferred being with my group of friends but I loved dabbing guys I didn’t know very well in the halls and it became regularly. Whenever i hear other people talk about their highschool experiences i feel like i live in another world. I know for sure there are people who went to completely normal schools just like me, but for some reasons i never hear from them. My school didn't have cliques or specific groups. I went to a school that was basically between two provinces, so there were students coming from a lot of different towns, and that's the best example of groups in my school i can think of. Like, a lot of the people from the same town would hang out together, go home together and this type of stuff but none of these "groups" were exclusive in anyway, they were basically just big friend groups. Also in my five years there were never major cases of bullying. Every joke was made knowing that the other person would vibe with it and there were never harsh jokes made on anyone. Even I, the absolute loner of the class who had literally one and a half friends, was never joked on for that. Instead, all my classmates always picked on me like they did with everyone else and always tried to make me feel more included (except i had big problems at the time and i always felt like i had to solve them by myself). The biggest "scandal" that happened was not a scandal but more of a sad story about a student who died because of cancer. The most "exciting" thing that happened was when the police came to our school to arrest a student who was believed to be a drug dealer (he was not, he just had some weed with him like a lot of other people). Obviously all of these differences in our experience could also be due to the fact that we live in places with very different cultures, but even when hearing stories from people from my country i always find myself having a different experience. I'd say i was lucky to have such a peaceful school experience, because outside of school a lot of bad shit happened lol.

Sameeee I'm indian, in my catholic school, there were beautiful popular kids, but we didn't have so many groups, like athletes and gamers etc

I graduated highschool in 2013 and me and my best friend were 100% in the weird group, and were the 'cat ear' girls. I am glad to see there is still representation hahaha

It's so funny that in every school everyone hates the popular kids and yet they are still popular
    (Thank you for the likes)

yup cos everyone can say they hate them but at the end of the day everyone follows them on insta and votes for them for prom.. its almost like a dumb crowd mentality, just cause everyone likes them then u do too

Not always, the “popular” kids at my school are pretty nice people they’re just the more preppy type A kids who have trendier (albeit more basic) style, tho most people at my school know each other so it’s pretty chill

Popular really means kids with social power. People might not like them but they have prestige.

i was popular adjacent in highschool, something like popular by association. All my closest friends were the popular kids but I wasn't really popular lol. I was still lowkey enough to be close to people from other cliques, but the popular kids were definitely my mains.

SAMEEE. my friends were friends with everyone. But when it really came down to me, I was very shy and was always anxious to meet new people. N I had many classes where I didn’t have any friends. N there were passing periods where I’d walk by myself. Whenever I was with my group, people wanted to be friends with my friends… not me lol.
