Great tutorial but I think I prefer the original image. Perhaps the photographer meant for the high contrast? It's a bit more dramatic, although I agree it could be brought back a little

in the original image the model appeared to be smothered by the background. with the dodging and burning technique you demonstrated she appeared to have been brought to the front thereby forcing the viewer to draw their eyes to here... long story short the final image is less distracting

M. Bamerni I suggest do some research on light perspective and it shouldn't be too hard to add an overlay highlight or flare

You could, but the effect would be overall. He's trying to show how to control specific areas. Like everything in PS there are at least three ways to accomplish the same task. You could probably get great results by using Selective Color Correction and Global Lighting.

Hi Bob. Long time no chat. Me too. End result is great but why so many adjustments? (x2)
2x adjustments (curves both) are ways to control rather meticulously the dodge and burn. For instance if you did a giant contrast and brightness adjust to the whole image, it would effect the whole image, eyes, teeth, lips. This was is to give a finer control to push the blacks deeper and the highlights brighter. Think of it has an HDR, but you don't have two images to combine into one. x2 is a common way to control this, however this is the first time I've seen it done using two curves. Generally what is done is 1.5x for curves and 1x for another function usually vibrance, but every photo is different. While the another curves layer .5 will be used desaturated, so you can see just highlights and shadows and not be distracted by color. YMMV
